Our company’s rich history began in 1837, as the first registered business in the state of Illinois. Since, we have overcome many obstacles including the tragic Chicago Fire of 1871 and the business shuttering under the previous ownership in the early 1990s. “I saw great opportunity when I took over the business in 1993,” Seymour says. We rebuilt C.D. Peacock and brought one of the most legendary jewelry stores in the country back to its glory and set our sights on a brilliant future. CELEBRATING

The Legendary C.D. Peacock Doors

In 1927 C.D. Peacock designed a store that far surpassed any jewelry store ever created. It was within the Palmer House Hotel at State Street and Monroe. Everything was extravagant — beyond the brilliant jewelry within the cases, the ceiling detail was elaborate and the exterior doors were especially magnificent. Commissioned by C.D. Peacock and designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany, the original three brass Peacock doors are still on display to this day.

BY LAURIE BROOKINS

G race Kelly famously pronounced the pearl “the queen of gems and the gem of queens.” Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis agreed: “Pearls are always appropriate,” she once said. Two of the 20th century’s most celebrated style icons believed wholeheartedly in the power of the pearl, and now this iconic gem is hotter than ever. The popularity of pearls in jewelry and fashion trends also promises to dovetail nicely with a major milestone in 2023: Mikimoto will celebrate 130 years since Japanese entrepreneur Kokichi Mikimoto founded the legendary pearl house that bears his name. Mikimoto has been a fan of pearls since he was a young boy who watched divers bring in their daily hauls on the shores of Toba, a port town located on the eastern tip of Japan’s Shima peninsula. But even as he admired the natural organic gemstones, he wondered if there was a way to consistently produce pearls that were perfectly round and smooth. In 1888, Mikimoto and his wife, Ume, experimented with introducing an irritant into Akoya oysters. It was a tiny mother-of-pearl bead that stimulated the oyster’s nacre secretion and caused it to create thousands of layers around the bead, forming a beautiful pearl. Five years later, it was Ume who retrieved the basket of oysters that proved Mikimoto’s idea would succeed. The harvest revealed a crop of semi-spherical cultured pearls. By 1896 he had received his first patent, and in 1899, he opened his first Mikimoto boutique in Tokyo’s fashionable Ginza district. Pearls a culture of

INTRODUCING FOPE AT C.D. PEACOCK

W hen you look at a piece of jewelry made by FOPE, it’s the volume and depth that catch your eye. The woven layers of lush, sculptured gold links create an intricate three-dimensional composition that fits your body like fabric. The bracelets and necklaces move when you move, and in some cases, they actually stretch, despite being made of hardy 18k gold. FOPE’s proprietary Flex-it method of construction consists of gold mesh chain with dozens of gold springs hidden between each link. The Luna collection of mesh gold chain includes new choker-style necklaces that simulate the look of a rigid choker but with the comfort of flexible mesh. They are made to last, not just in terms of strength but in terms of style: FOPE jewelry is classic with a literal twist — the very definition of understated luxury.

Solo Necklace 18K Yellow Gold and diamonds $7,070

Luna Flex’It Bracelet 18K Yellow Gold $10,500

The bracelets, necklaces, and rings at the core FOPE collections are designed to be mixed and matched together in stacks and strands. Some are set with diamond accents, and all are made of 18k white, yellow, or rose gold. New in the Aria collection is a shorter length (37 mm) necklace, along with a new Y-shaped lariat style necklace. Matching earrings are composed of delicate chains that hang from behind the ear and have been designed to be multi-functional — they can be can be worn long or short, looped from the back to the front of the earring, or removed to create a simple stud design. Pieces within the Must Haves collection have been designed to be mixed and matched in the three gold colorways, featuring a rondel set with white or black diamonds for women and men. Now there is even a separate men’s collection set with black diamonds and accents of black rhodium. More reason than ever to have fun with FOPE!

CHICAGO ICONS

BY JENNIFER BRUGH + LORI ROBERTS

A CLOSER LOOK AT OUR BELOVED CITY’S MOST ICONIC ARCHITECTURE AND EXTRAORDINARY DIAMONDS THAT PAY TRIBUTE TO THEM CHICAGO SHINES BRIGHT

24 | C.D. PEACOCK MAGAZINE

F or nearly two centuries, Chicago has been a bustling city full of life, adventure, and culture. From its humble beginnings as a trading post in the late 18th century, Chicago has risen to be one of the most iconic cities in the world, boasting hundreds of stunning sculptures and some of the most incredible architecture in the western hemisphere. Famously nicknamed The Windy City, our beloved metropolis is full of gems that truly make Chicago a place unlike any other. But how did this all happen? Where did all these ideas start?

From inception, Chicago leaders and visionaries imagined a city that lives for the future — a city full of potential and shining brilliance. Following the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, architects throughout the city set out to create a metropolis worth the map dot. Among this group were Daniel Burnham and John Wellborn Root, who teamed up to change the character and aesthetics of architecture throughout the city over the next two decades. Unfortunately, Root’s premature passing ended the partnership in 1892. Yet, their work and unique craftsmanship are

still on display in many iconic gems around the city — The Staypineapple Hotel, the Rookery Building, and the Egyptian-inspired Monadnock building, just to name a few. In a similar fashion, architect Frank Lloyd Wright shared his visions, designing homes and buildings throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Following the work of his mentor Louis Sullivan, Wright mastered the art of fluid-organic ornamentation, coupling it

with his love for nature. The result? Grand structures with unique ties to the natural landscape.

Today, modern and traditional architecture stand side-by-side, reflecting the city’s rich history and vision for a bright and shiny future. Yet, these buildings don’t just inspire a bustling city, they also inspire many of the jewelry designs you’ll find at C.D. Peacock. Like these famous architects, our jewelry artisans design and craft adornments with precision and skill. The result? One-of-a-kind jewelry pieces that reflect the past yet hold visions for the future. For us, these similarities are undeniable.

inspire the foundation for supertall buildings around the world. The entire tower is a work of iconic art, recognizable even from the sky, and is often the first building of the Chicago skyline to greet you. The similarities to this radiant diamond ring are uncanny. Strong angles create not

only three separate beautifully cut diamonds but add unique depth to each stone, creating sparkle and shine that mimics that of the Willis Tower. Complimentary side stones highlight the center stone’s brilliance, an undeniable likeness to the shorter buildings that spotlight the main towering structure.

MARIANA CITY TOWERS Based on the vision of architect Bertrand Goldberg, these famous “corncob” towers were one of the first mix-use developments inside The Loop. Built with residents in mind, these towers resemble everything there is to love about city living. Mariana City Towers feature a city within a city, housing residential, office, retail, and parking spaces. While a vision ahead of its time, these twin towers also dare to be bold and different.

The Mariana City Towers remind us of jewelry designers with similar aspirations to be bold and different. Two that come to mind are Roberto Coin and Hearts on Fire. For example, beautiful Aurora diamond cluster earrings from Hearts on Fire imitate the exterior shape of the Mariana City Towers. From above, you can imagine the interior of the towers with clusters of retail shops, apartments, and amenities on every level.

Similarly, the hand-selected Robert Coin 18K Princess tassel pendant is undeniably akin to the towers. The beaded portion of the tassel creates a similar corncob appearance, mirroring the towers’ exterior. Once you see the correlations between these beautiful jewelry pieces and the iconic buildings of Chicago, it’s easy to understand why we selected them to feature in our showcases.

THE SPERTUS INSTITUTE Along Chicago’s iconic Michigan Avenue streetwall of Grant Park is perhaps one of the world’s most intriguing buildings. The Spertus Institute stands out from all the rest — an elaborate diamond in the rough, if you will. Designed by Krueck and Sexton Architects, the Spertus Institute is a multi- faceted Jewish education and training center that rises 10-stories high and juts out over the city sidewalks, making itself seen and known by all. Much the same can be said for the fine luxury diamond jewelry from Henri Daussi. Learning how to place different facets onto a rough diamond, turning it into a beautiful, brilliant gem, and ultimately designing and creating a one-of-a-kind jewel is Mr. Henri Daussi Loots’ specialty. Over the years, Henri has perfected the techniques taught to him by his father and grandfather, learning how to cut facets into a diamond rather than just onto the diamond. Henri always trusted and believed that cutting and placing facets into a diamond was possible and made it his purpose. This level of craftsmanship has opened the doors to many potential new diamond shapes and cuts — he was the first to cut a heart-shaped diamond. Much like the Spertus Institute, each of Henri Daussi’s diamonds is unique from nearly every angle — true works of art that catch the light just right and make admirers stop and stare.

CLOUD GATE Perhaps one of the most iconic structures in all of Chicago, Cloud Gates rests inside the 24.5- acre roof-top garden known as Millennium Park. Designed by world-renowned artist Anish Kapoor, Cloud Gate (aka the Chicago Bean) comprises 168 stainless-steel plates, weighs 110 tons, and attracts millions of tourists annually. It’s a popular spot for both tourists and residents alike. Coincidentally, the diamond line bracelet has been a crowd-pleasing favorite for decades. Ever since Chrissy Evert nicknamed it her “tennis bracelet,” these diamond adornments have been a classic gift for nearly every occasion. Now the line necklace is taking center stage!

No longer reserved for special events, diamond line necklaces are a complimentary piece, mixing and matching with your other favorite necklaces. With diamonds all the way around, it’s guaranteed to shine brighter than your reflection of Chicago’s Bean. But talk about smooth lines! Chicago’s Bean may be comprised of steel plates, but there’s no sharp corner to find — much like oval diamonds. The oval diamond cut creates a smooth finish that appears visually larger than a brilliant round diamond with the same carat weight. Oval cut diamonds are indeed masterpieces of illusion, much like many of Chicago’s famous sculptures and buildings.

City skyline reflections in the stainless steel Cloud Gate public sculpture in Millennium Park. The sculpture is commonly referred to as the Chicago Bean and is one of the world’s largest permanent outdoor art installations. The monumental work was unveiled in 2004 and quickly became of the Chicago’s most iconic sights. It was designed by internationally acclaimed artist, Anish Kapoor.

KATHERINE BEAMAN, OUR LEADING CUSTOM DESIGNER, GIVES SOME INSIGHT ON THE CRAFT OF CREATING JEWELRY AT C.D. PEACOCK

Q: Katherine, why would anyone choose to custom design a piece of jewelry, with so much to choose from in the store? A: Jewelry is so personal. Many love not only owning a one-of-a-kind piece, but also being involved in the creation of it from start to finish. The process is fun and exciting as I work together with you, and your special design comes to life more and more through each phase. Q : You mention “the process” of custom design, what is that like and what should someone to do get started? A: It all starts with a conversation. I often start with the who, what and why – who do you want to create a custom design for? What kind of piece do you want to create? And the why usually revolves around a celebration or milestone in life. Some come in with very specific thoughts and ideas on what they want their piece to look like, others have no idea – either way, the first conversation together is always fun and full of discovery that inspires me to create a piece of jewelry to match your vision or sentiment. All you need to get started is an appointment. Q: How long does it take to create a custom designed piece, and does it cost more? A: The timeline depends on if specific gemstones or materials need to be ordered, but in general from start to finish it takes about 4-6 weeks – not long, considering you are creating a special piece that will be adored for a lifetime. Costs vary, just like jewelry varies throughout our showroom, but often custom design doesn’t cost more, and you get the experience of creating something unique and very personal.

HANS WILSDORF WAS FIRMLY CONVINCED OF A PERSON’S ABILITY TO INNOVATE AND STRIVE FOR EXCELLENCE. MORE THAN 100 YEARS AFTER THE CREATION OF THE BRAND, THE FOUNDER’S PHILOSOPHY IS MORE PRESENT THAN EVER, FROM THE MANUFACTURING OF THE COMPANY’S WATCHES TO ITS COMMITMENTS WORLDWIDE. A VOYAGE INTO THE WORLD OF ROLEX

COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE Since the beginning, the story of Rolex has been characterized by the quest for perfection and the ambition to push back boundaries.

48 | C.D. PEACOCK MAGAZINE

A t the turn of the 20th century, a visionary entrepreneur based in London was on the verge of success. His aim? To introduce the watchmaking world of the day to an as-yet- unknown dial signature: Rolex. A new name, invented in 1908, it would become one of the world’s most respected brands in the space of a few decades. As Hans Wilsdorf recounted in his memoirs of the early days of his company, the opposition he faced seemed insurmountable at first. The entrepreneur started out with very little, but he did possess invaluable qualities: vision, perseverance, and an extraordinary ability to work. An orphan at the age of 12, with nothing other than his determination to help him overcome challenges, Hans Wilsdorf went on to invent the world’s first waterproof self-winding wristwatch with a Perpetual rotor — a watch that has become a benchmark in terms of quality and prestige. “Too complicated, too fragile, ill-adapted” — the wristwatch was met with scepticism. Yet, relying on his firmly-held beliefs, Hans Wilsdorf managed to achieve his bold objective of establishing the Rolex watch — the Oyster Perpetual — as the archetype of the waterproof timepiece: precise, robust, and able to withstand all conditions. But he was not simply a visionary who endowed Rolex watches with their fundamental technical and aesthetic characteristics. His constant quest for perfection was accompanied by a profound generosity and unshakeable faith in human potential. UNITING EXPERTISE An integrated and independent company, Rolex has manufacturing resources that encompass a wide range of skills and knowledge. Watchmakers, engineers, designers, and other specialists work closely together from the design to the manufacturing

of the watches. Rolex’s company culture is based above all on human values, which place both expertise and soft skills at the heart of the brand’s different activities. Rolex is host to a variety of professions, brought to life by employees who are experts in their fields. The company has complete control over its essential components, from the casting of gold alloys to machining, finishing, and assembly of the movement, case, dial, and bracelet elements, as well as gem-setting. Its know-how is also made available right across the world thanks to an exceptional after-sales service network. To ensure the brand’s expertise exists into the future, Rolex has its own unique training center. Dedicated to the pursuit of excellence and the development of its employees, the center, located in Geneva, provides training to employees and instructs apprentices. The company aims to pass on to younger generations its pride in its skills and mastery of its knowledge. A WATCH UNLIKE THE REST The Oyster Perpetual collection was built on the success of the original

Oyster model, patented by Rolex and launched in 1926. As the world’s first waterproof wristwatch, it played a pioneering role in the development of the modern timepiece. Over the years, the Oyster became the proud bearer of many other innovations — such as self-winding by means of the Perpetual rotor (1931) — that defined the identity of the models in the collection and forged Rolex’s reputation for excellence, of which chronometric precision and reli- ability are among the cornerstones. The Oyster gradually evolved into a collection of watches that integrated new functions and innovative technologies. All the models share fundamental features and a strong visual identity. Today the collection consists of 12 ranges, split into two categories: classic watches such as the Datejust and the Day-Date, and professional watches, including the Explorer and the GMT-Master II. As the pioneer of the wristwatch, the company is at the origin of numerous major innovations in the watchmaking industry and has filed over 500 patents in the course of its history.

OYSTER PERPETUAL DAY-DATE

THE REALIZATION OF AN IDEAL

When midnight strikes, the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date forms a bridge between past and future, between what has been achieved and what remains to be lived. Since 1956, it has borne witness to the greatest moments in history on the wrist of visionaries, virtuosos and pioneers. Those who make each day a promise for the future.

TIMELESS PRESTIGE Decades come and go, but the Day-Date remains at the cutting edge of modernity. It has accompanied generations of eminent people who have shaped their world through their commitment, human qualities and creative genius. From left: skier Lindsey Vonn, film director Martin Scorsese and golfers Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player.

A t its launch in 1956, the Day-Date was a major innovation: it was the first calendar wrist- watch to indicate, in addition to the date, the day of the week spelt out in full in an arc-shaped window at 12 o’clock on the dial – a technical feat at the time. Made exclusively of precious metals – 18 ct yellow, white or Everose gold or 950 platinum – and accompanied by its emblematic President bracelet, its multiple dials make it the ideal canvas for self-expression.

THE DAY-DATE SPEAKS ITS WEARER’S LANGUAGE

“DATES AND DAYS ARE ESSENTIAL.” Hans Wilsdorf, 1956

Although the days may be the same wher- ever you are in the world, they are writ- ten differently depending on the lan- guage. Using most writing systems – Latin, Arabic, Cyrillic, Hebrew, Japanese, Chi- nese ideograms and even the Ge’ez alphasylla- bary used in the Horn of Africa – the Day-Date expresses the cultural identity of its wearer. Available in a choice of 26 languages, it is a truly international, universal and personal watch. THE MIRACLE OF MIDNIGHT: AN IDEAL OF PRECISION When midnight strikes, the day and date si- multaneously change in their respective win- dows on the dial. This watchmaking feat, the “miracle of midnight”, relies on a disc mech- anism. It is the fruit of numerous years of re- search: from 1950 to 1955 Rolex registered four patents for timepieces featuring an indication of day and date. Today, the Day-Date is equipped with a new-generation movement, calibre 3255, entire- ly developed and manufactured by Rolex for a superlative level of performance.

THE PRESIDENT BRACELET Created specially for the launch of the presti- gious Oyster Perpetual Day-Date in 1956, the three-piece link President bracelet, made only from 18 ct gold or 950 platinum, is still reserved exclusively for the Day-Date and precious metal versions of the Datejust. A PRECIOUS ALLY Worn by many of the world’s political figures, directors and visionaries, the Day-Date is in- stantly recognizable, in particular thanks to its emblematic President bracelet, whose evoca- tive name, together with the eminent figures who have worn it, ensured the Day-Date be- came known as the “presidents’ watch”. Decades come and go, but the Day- Date remains where it has always been – at the cutting edge of modern- ity. A timepiece of prestige and the fruit of Rolex’s watchmaking expert-ise, the Day-Date

accompanies those personalities who shape the world in their respective disciplines through their commitment, human qualities and cre- ative genius. Among the Rolex Testimonees associated with the Day-Date, the brand celebrates Ameri- can skier Lindsey Vonn, Swiss tennis player Rog- er Federer, American filmmaker Martin Scors- ese and golfers Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player.

The same movement is used in the new Black Bay GMT S&G (steel and gold), which is aptly being nicknamed the “root beer” for its bi- colored brown and black bezel — a name given to another watch with that color scheme, the Rolex GMT-Master II. The color scheme looks great with the two-tone steel and gold bracelet and gold bezel edges, along with the matching numerals, indexes, hands, and crown. This is a good-looking sports watch that is equally at home in the boardroom. The Black Bay Chrono S&G takes the yellow gold a step further to the dial, in a bold rendition of the iconic two-register chronograph,

here with black subdials — a reverse dial variant of the Black Bay Chrono from 2019. The fixed bezel is yellow gold, surrounded by a black anodized aluminum insert with gold-plated markings. The crown and chronograph pushers are all yellow gold. It contains the Tudor caliber MT5813, a high-end integrated chronograph movement with a column wheel and vertical clutch with a power reserve of 70 hours. With 200- meter water-resistance, this watch is a pure substance-plus-style sports watch that, when you consider its accessible price, blows comparable luxury sports watch brands out of the market.

CLASSIC C artier is famous for its shaped watches. There is the Tortue (tortoise), Baignoire (bathtub) and the Crash (a car wreck), and now THE COUSSIN , named for the shape of a cushion. It’s a dazzling entry to the Cartier oeuvre. The cases are set with all white diamonds, a mix of black and white diamonds, or tsavorites and Paraiba tourmalines, arranged in a swirling spiral pattern around the bezel. The stones are cut in precise gradient sizes to fit the pattern of the swirl, and just for fun, the tsavorites are set upside down, with pavilions pointing upwards for an edgy studded look.
