BLACK BAY 58 NAVY BLUE REVISITS TUDOR’S 1960S-ERA MILITARY-GRADE DIVE WATCHES

T

udor has surged in popularity since it returned to the U.S. market in 2013, with vintage pieces in demand and new models that appeal to avid collectors. The latest is a long-awaited all-blue version of Tudor’s highly sought-after Black Bay Fifty-Eight. The BB58, as enthusiasts call it, is so-named because Tudor’s first dive watches debuted in 1958. Although models in the modern collection, which launched in 2018, have black dials, this new offering is inspired specifically by a series with blue dials, introduced in 1969. At that time, Tudor was making professional dive watches for the Marine Nationale — the French Navy — built to true military-issue standards. Like the original black-dialed BB58, the new blue version has a 39 mm steel case, an authentic size if you want to stay true to the vintage style. Watches made in the 1950s were smaller than the typical 42 mm+ sizes of more recent times and constitute a growing preference of the moment. The domed crystal is another pure vintage touch.

The snowflake hands have been a feature of Tudor diver’s watches since 1969. They were designed that way for high readability, and today that feature is enhanced even more by the application of Super-LumiNova to the hands and the applied markers, making them glow underwater or in other dark conditions. The watch is water-resistant to 200 meters (660 feet). The BB58 Navy Blue contains the in-house automatic MT5402 movement, with a silicon balance spring and an adjustable balance. It is COSC certified, which means it is an official chronometer, accurate to within -2 and +4 seconds per day. With a 70-hour power reserve, the BB58 is weekend proof: you can take it off on Friday and put it back on your wrist on Monday without having to wind and reset it. The strap selection is appropriately sporty. It’s available on a blue jacquard fabric strap, a blue synthetic soft touch strap that hugs the wrist like a soft flannel sheet, or on the brand’s iconic riveted steel bracelet. The bezel cover, made of anodized aluminum, is also blue. Tudor is now offering a five-year guarantee on all its watches sold after January 1, 2020, a guarantee that does not require the watch to be registered and is transferable. All Tudor products bought between July 1, 2018, and December 31, 2019,
can get an 18-month extension to their guarantee.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE THE WORLD’S MOST RELIABLE

SPORTS WATCHES?

A HISTORY OF ROLEX ADVENTURE WATCHES AND THE MATERIALS THAT MAKE THEM GREAT

Rolex is the original action watch and has long been associated with adventure. Rolex watches have survived the most extreme conditions, from the highest summits to the deepest recesses of the ocean. Climb Mount Everest? Check. Submerge into the depths of the Mariana Trench? Check. The world of Rolex is a world that calls for robust watches — even fictional worlds have touted the watch — the original James Bond timepiece was a Rolex. Since it was founded in 1905, the company has filed over 500 patents. It is credited with inventing the world’s first waterproof self- winding wristwatch and the world’s first self-winding mechanism with a perpetual rotor. First came the water resistance. The Oyster Perpetual collection, with hermetically sealed cases, was built on the success of the original Oyster model, patented by Rolex and launched in 1926. As the world’s first waterproof wristwatch, it played a pioneering role in the development of the modern timepiece. In 1927, it was worn by British swimmer Mercedes Gleitze during her historic swim across the English Channel. The swim lasted over 10 hours, and the watch remained in perfect working order. In 1931, Rolex invented and patented the world’s first self-winding mechanism with a Perpetual rotor, which is today at the heart of every modern automatic watch. The first expedition to fly over Everest, in 1933, was equipped with Rolex Oysters, and 20 years later, Sir John Hunt’s expedition, in which Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the summit of Mount Everest, was equipped with Oyster Perpetuals. In 1960, the experimental bathyscaphe, the Trieste, successfully descended into the Mariana Trench, the deepest known depression on the Earth’s surface. Emerging from 10,916 meters (37,800 feet), the bathyscaphe was in perfect working order — as was the Rolex Deep Sea Special experimental watch that had been attached to the outside during the historic dive.

Oystersteel: This is 904L grade steel, a superalloy used in the aerospace and chemical industries, and that means it has the corrosion resistance and high polish of precious metals. It also has a high sheen, so it looks good for a long time.

Everose Gold: By adding copper and silver to gold in its proprietary formula, Rolex achieves its uniquely warm rose gold. Rolex also uses its own formulas of 18k yellow and 18k white gold.

Platinum: Rolex uses 950 platinum, a high-concentration alloy that includes ruthenium for strength and shine.

Rolesor: This is a name Rolex gives to its patented method of combining Oystersteel and gold in its two-tone models. The bezel, the winding crown, and the center bracelet links are made of 18k yellow or Everose gold, and the middle case and outer links of the bracelet are made of Oystersteel.

Cerachrom: Rolex’s proprietary ceramic is made in-house. It is scratch-proof, impervious to UV rays (it doesn’t fade), and it is now the standard for bezel inserts on Rolex’s sport watches.

Cosmograph Daytona 40 mm, in yellow gold with Oysterflex bracelet.

Chromalight: Rolex’s luminescent material — blue by night, bright white by day — providing high visibility in dark environments.

BRACELETS: Jubilee Bracelet: The supple five-piece links on dressy watches and some sport watches, such as the GMT-Master II. It was originally designed for the Datejust in 1945.

Oyster Bracelet: The larger, flat, three-piece links make for a simpler, sportier look.

President Bracelet: The President uses semi-circular three-piece links, originally created in 1956 for the Day-Date. It is always 18k yellow, white, or Everose gold, or 950 platinum.

Pearlmaster Bracelet: The refined five-piece links make the Pearlmaster Rolex’s most elegant bracelet, found only with a crownlock clasp.

Oysterflex Bracelet: Made of a very soft, flexible elastomer with an internal cushion system that makes it extremely well fitting and comfortable. The bracelet is fitted over a metal blade made of a titanium and nickel alloy, achieving the strength of metal and the comfort of rubber.

Pearlmaster 34mm, in yellow gold with diamonds.

BEZELS: Fluted Bezels: Iconic and hard to miss, today’s fluted bezels are one of the great signature elements of Rolex timepieces. Engraved Fixed Bezels: Found on the Explorer II and the Cosmograph Daytona, demarcations are engraved into either Oystersteel, a precious metal, or Ceracrom.

Rotating Bezels with Inserts: Used for Professional watches. Scratch-proof Cerachrom inserts are the norm.

Rotating Precious Metal Bezels: Exclusive to the Yachtmasters, these are sporty, deeply engraved bezels.

olor is emerging as a strong trend in watches. New shades are showing up, not just in sports watches, which have traditionally flashed brightly colored dial highlights to enhance readability, but C COLOR BOOST also in dress watches, with artfully hued dials that add extra style and personality. Seiko is at the forefront of the trend, with new pieces in both its dressy Presage collection and its sporty Diver’s collection, showing off subtly colored dials. Blue and green are the most prominent colors in dial tones at the moment. Blue is the color of casual sportiness, and it looks good with cases and bracelets in any metal: white, rose, or yellow. Green is a statement maker that symbolizes nature, youth, and spring time. From forest green to military green to pastel hues, green is a color for individualists. Other colors, such as rust, brown, and ice blue, are even more unique and have the power to create a strong sense of individual style. The signature feature of Seiko’s Presage collection is the artistic dials. Shadows and light play over the peaks and valleys of artfully textured dials, a feature that is emphasized and brought to life with added color. The sports watches are also getting a color lift. As one of the brands that helped to develop water resistant watches in the 1940s, Seiko is now famous for its wide range of professionally rated dive watches. The Automatic Diver’s watch line is water resistant to 200 meters, and contains an automatic mechanical movement. The unidirectional rotating bezel is designed to time deep dives, and the luminescent hands and markers are guaranteed to offer optimum visibility under water. The new ice blue and green dials make these watches as fashionable as they are tough.

THE MAGIC OF

ecause gemstones are created by nature, people have always believed they have a special energy and mystical properties. Belief in gem powers has existed for nearly 5,000 years. Depending on the era and the civilization, colored stones have been associated with wealth, power, love, safety, and wellbeing. Some people think gem lore is silly — how could a simple rock have such power? I would argue that wearing a beautiful gemstone has the power to promote

emotional wellbeing and strength just by making you feel beautiful and powerful. Gemstones allow us to illuminate our individual spirits and express our sense of style. Everyone responds to color, and each hue works its own special, secret magic. From amethyst and garnet to the finest rubies and emeralds, jewelry designers are constantly finding new ways of conveying that power. Here are some recent examples and a glimpse into the special magic of gem colors.

RED IS THE COLOR OF LOVE. IT RADIATES WARMTH AND PRODUCES A STRONG SENSE OF VITALITY. TWO MAGICAL ELEMENTS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH THE SYMBOLISM OF THIS COLOR: FIRE AND BLOOD, IMPLYING WARMTH AND LIFE FOR ALL.

T sparkling sensations

here’s certainly something attention grabbing about the flash of a diamond. But even that glow pales next to the passion behind the gift. For centuries, the diamond has been valued as the most precious of offerings, but what is it that makes these sparkling gems stand out in a crowd? For starters, the diamond is recognized as one of the most durable materials on the planet, an emblem of purity and perfection, and a symbol of the eternal. No wonder it has found itself enthroned as the run-away most popular symbol for most people’s deepest bond — the engagement ring.

Jewels by Jacob, Diamond Bracelet with 3.00 carat total weight in Diamonds set in 14k white gold $7,500.

While the tradition of the engagement ring can reliably be traced as far back as ancient Rome, the first well- documented use of a diamond as a symbol of betrothal comes from the Renaissance. Archduke Maximilian of Austria began the tradition in Vienna in 1477. As the gift he presented upon his promised union to Mary of Burgundy, the diamond ring sparked a new sensation, as fashionable, high class socialites began likewise offering diamond rings to their loved ones. The rest, as they say, is history, as the diamond grew to become a well-recognized symbol of admiration and affection, being given in myriad forms, from gestures of loyalty and fidelity to pledges of undying love. The modern diamond remains a symbol of heartfelt sentiment and devotion. Aside from the ubiquitous use as the centerpiece of the engagement ring, diamonds are also considered the perfect gift to commemorate life’s greatest milestones, from the birth of a child to significant wedding anniversaries, especially the 10th and the 60th. Richter & Phillips Jewelers has been Cincinnati’s direct diamond importer for over a century. Developing relationships with diamond suppliers throughout the world, we are able to offer you the tri-state’s largest on-site diamond collection, affording you the opportunity to find that one perfect stone. When it comes to diamonds, it’s difficult to decide whether it’s better to give or to receive. At Richter & Phillips Jewelers, we have seen countless examples of both, and like the stone itself, each one is a shining example of the timeless perfection of love.

A LITTLE SOMETHING BLUE

Our final cocktail rings feature our favorite colored stone: blue sapphire! These stunning rings are deep and moody — midnight blues surrounded by twinkly diamonds. We decided to challenge another one of our absolute favorite restaurants, our neighbors a few doors down at Sotto. Sotto crafted a classic cocktail using a very traditional recipe, rather than a riff or variation. They opted for the Aviation, its sophisticated gray-blue color making it the perfect comp- lement to the rich marine and navy shades of the classic blue sapphire. While the color is derived from French creme de violette, it is supported and given depth by Italian Luxardo maraschino liqueur.

sapphire

Diamond, which signifies forever, is the gemstone suggested for anniversaries number 10 and 60. The name is derived from the Latin diamas meaning unconquerable, and this gemstone has maintained its position throughout history as a perfect icon for everlasting love and marriage. Diamond is believed to inspire loyalty, romance, and a joyful life. Chosen by most first brides to seal the deal, diamond offers many ways to celebrate each year together — from studs and solitaire pendants to stackable bands and bracelets. ruby Ruby symbolizes the power of attraction and long-lasting love. It is the top suggestion for anniversaries number 15 and 40. This fiery red gem — the color of the heart — has always been associated with deep love. Stackable bands set with ruby and white diamonds are popular, as are bold cocktail rings and three-stone styles. It doesn’t have to be a ring, though. Stud earrings, ruby pendants, and diamond bracelets set with rubies also make a statement of love.

Sapphire is suggested for anniversaries number 5 and 45. This gemstone has historically signified truth and promises, perfect sentiments for any marriage. Next to diamond, sapphire is a favorite wedding gem, inspiring sincerity, peace, and joy. Pearls, which are suggested for anniversaries number 3 and 30, have a long history as a wedding gem, dating back to the early Hindus when Krishna gave his daughter a pearl on her wedding day. A symbol of romance and devotion, pearl’s love attraction was thought to be so strong that Cleopatra dissolved a pearl in wine and swallowed it to seduce Mark Antony. Pearls offer lots of options, from classic Akoya to bold South Sea to colorful, shapely freshwater varieties. Popular gifts include long pearl strands and necklaces that mix pearls with chain and other gems, as well as bespoke designs in drop earrings and standout rings.

he journey is long. The glistening diamonds that line the showcases at Richter & Phillips Jewelers truly have a remarkable past. Each diamond has its own story, from mine to mounting. Diamonds are older than life on Earth, a true miracle of nature. According to the Natural Diamond Council, long before there was life on Earth, there were diamonds. Most were created one to three billion years ago, and the youngest diamond ever found was over 100 million years old. Originating more than 100 miles beneath the Earth, they were pushed to the surface by volcanic eruptions 300-400 million years ago, long before dinosaurs roamed. Diamonds are the oldest thing that most of us will ever hold. The journey originates when a diamond is mined from the earth’s surface. In its raw form, the uncut stone is called, “rough.” Next, expert diamond cutters study the rough and carefully determine the size and shape of the diamond, or multiple diamonds, that can be produced from each piece of rough. Just as technology improves so many aspects of our daily lives, it also has tremendously enhanced the centuries-old art of diamond cutting. “The cutting process of the rough diamond is a unique skill that requires deep understanding of the rough diamond structure,” says Gadi Cohen of Ofer Mizrahi Diamonds. “However, we are able today to use state of the art technology in order to carefully analyze the rough’s characteristics and calculate its total dimension to maximize the size and number of diamonds that can be cut from it. The computer creates a blueprint for the diamonds prior to cutting, much like an architect creates drawings for a new home, prior to building.” Once the computer maps the way, the cutting begins. It is a slow, lengthy, and meticulous process. The computer’s progress and robotic cutting technology is always overseen by a highly trained expert, with checkpoints at every phase. Cohen states, “It is truly a co-production between man and machine.”

And what a beautiful production it is!

hen it comes to designing the perfect ring, it is common to start with the center stone. After all, it’s the first thing people will notice when you show

SOLITAIRES 2021 will also be the year of the solitaire. Savvy brides-to-be are opting to go with a simpler style for their engagement ring setting, which offers the opportunity to opt for a larger diamond. off your ring, so why not make it unique? From vintage asscher cut to dramatic marquise, fancy stones are taking center stage, literally. In 2020, we saw a rise in pear-shaped diamonds, an interesting shape that offers great value. In 2021, however, we expect to see a continued rise in ovals. Oval-shaped diamonds are amazing because they show their carat weight well and are flattering on the finger. Overall, fancy shapes are very trendy and

HIDDEN HALOS If you want to incorporate a little extra sparkle, but still maintain the look of minimalism, a hidden halo is absolutely perfect. The hidden halo is a modern take on the classic halo, but featuring tiny round diamonds, which create an unexpected sparkling crown that truly elevates the ring’s appearance. This new look is ideal for those who love halo rings but prefer a more discreet design. BEAUTIFUL DIAMOND BANDS The perfect complement to a large, solitaire engagement ring is a big, beautiful diamond band. In that vein, a current, notable trend for brides is to opt for a unique, large diamond band, instead of a traditional engagement ring. Whether worn solo or with an engagement ring, diamond bands are a gorgeous look that we can totally get behind.

YELLOW GOLD We are also excited to bring some color back into your wedding set. Yellow gold is making a glittering return to the jewelry scene, especially in bridal jewelry. Yellow gold compliments all skin tones and really sets off the fiery sparkle of your center diamond. CUSTOM DESIGNS The best part about engagement rings in 2021? Nothing is off the table. Brides-to-be are breaking tradition and looking for something personal that reflects their individual style. Richter & Phillips Jewelers is the tri-state’s leader when it comes to custom designing the perfect engagement ring. Whether making small adjustments to a setting you find in our shop, updating a family heirloom, or inventing a completely original combination of your favorite Pinterest rings, we have the ability to bring your dream to fruition and create something totally you!

en who are comfortable wearing jewelry every day approach the idea of shopping for a wedding band with more of a sense of what they want than men of previous generations did. Even men who don’t normally wear jewelry view it as an opportunity to play up their personal style. The wedding band may be the first piece of precious metal jewelry a man will wear, and too many options can overwhelm, so a simple rule is to match the personality to the metal. Gold and platinum bands are classic and remain the metals of choice for most grooms, but what makes these bands modern is a thinner width with a textured surface, such as carving, etching, or hammering. Eric Fehr, Vice President and owner, credits the store’s lengthy history with Richter & Phillips’ adaptability. “Buying a diamond in 1896 was nothing like buying a diamond in 2020. We’ve always been able to adapt to the times and the needs of our customers, and we’ve always been willing to try something new.” A successful practicing attorney, Eric faced a crossroads when offered a partnership in his law firm. “I decided to take a leap of faith and follow my father into the family business. When I saw all the care he brings to the job, I was ready to take on the legacy, and it’s the best move I ever made.” Eric’s a relative newcomer to the Richter & Phillips staff — a group of 18 professionals, some of whom have been on the payroll for more than 40 years. “The staff is the perfect mix. With them, the sky is the

limit for our store,” he says, “no matter what the future holds.” Eric envisions the possibility of more jewelers and watchmakers, more in-store events when it’s safe to bring in a crowd, or online educational opportunities — all things to enhance the customer experience, to educate the consumer, and make the business of buying jewelry less intimidating and a lot more fun. “For all of us at Richter & Phillips, we see an ideal we’re always trying to achieve,” he explains. “We offer an awesome product and a great price, and over the years, we’ve given our customers a great experience that has snowballed through generations, from granddad to dad to son and from mother to daughter. happily ever after

CINCINNATI LOVESTORIES Molly &Hank

What did you do on your first date and how did it go? M: Well... our first date was about 10 years ago, and apparently it did not go very well, because it took us 9 years to go on our second date! Let’s blame it on immaturity. Years of growing up were needed before we had our next date, which is where our romance really began. We met up for happy hour at Cobblestone in OTR on a Thursday afternoon. Happy hour turned into us hopping around OTR for numerous drinks and appetizers before we called it a night and agreed to hangout again on Saturday. We’ve been inseparable ever since.

H: Our first date was circa 2009. I picked her up at her parents’ house and took her out to dinner (I can’t remember where we went, for the life of me), then went to a comedy show at Funny Bone in Newport.Apparently, the comedian was not very funny, because the date went nowhere. On our “second first date” in 2019, we met downtown and then went up to Over The Rhine for some drinks. That one went much better, and we went out again a couple days later. What is the first thing you noticed about him/her? M: When we first started dating, what I first noticed and loved about him was his laugh. He’s got the greatest laugh. Sarah and Paul Photography

H: What was the first thing I noticed? Those big blonde curls! When did you realize they were the one?

M: I knew right after our “second first date” that there was a strong possibility we would end up together. A couple of months later, I tagged along for his work conference in Vegas, and I came back completely smitten. I think those were the exact words that I used when I told my mom how things went (with a beaming smile across my face). Meeting his amazing family helped seal the deal, too. I definitely hit the in-law jackpot. H: I would have to say it was in Folly Beach on my family vacation a couple months after we started dating. I can’t say exactly how I knew; I just knew.
