ello and well wishes to all of you! When I wrote last year’s letter, I couldn’t have imagined what 2020 would bring. I don’t need to tell you how life has changed, because you know all too well about the challenges that COVID-19 has brought. We witnessed tragedies, anger, and backlash due to racial inequalities that still exist in our communities. We struggled with political turmoil and worried about our country’s future. This year certainly hasn’t brought us what we wanted, but I know that it has brought me quite a few new perspectives. I was reminded that life can be both bitter and sweet. Businesses, schools and schedules were completely disrupted and many of us lost the ability to spend time with family and friends. Our plans were changed and we were forced to abandon or modify weddings, parties, classes, and vacations. And yet, there were positives. My family got to spend a lot of quality time together enjoying simple pleasures. We learned how to live with less on our calendars. My son, Jack, heads to college next year, with our three younger boys following him every two years thereafter. I’m thankful for every extra moment my wife and I got to spend with them. At Henne we had several clients postpone their weddings, and our hearts broke for them. We understand the joy and excitement leading up to that special day. We also rejoiced with others who got engaged and chose to marry during the pandemic. We watched crowds unite peacefully while demanding justice. We saw police officers and civilians embrace (albeit with masks), while working toward racial reconciliation. On a personal note, I joined a group of businessmen, both black and white, dedicated to better understanding the world we live in.

As far as business goes, this year forced us to meet our clients’ needs in innovative and creative ways. Our customers are always our top priority. Serving you in the midst of a pandemic meant paying extra attention to health and safety, while being mindful of our customers’ comfort levels. Our goal was, and continues, to be able to operate safely and to take every precaution necessary while remaining fully functional. To that end, we launched virtual concierge services and became comfortable helping customers via Zoom, Facetime, web chat, and other means of virtual selling. Every year I feel an immense sense of gratitude for you, our clients. I’m not sure words can express how grateful we are for your patience, loyalty, and trust, especially this year. I can’t say enough about the amazing team here at Henne Jewelers, who have gone above and beyond every day. I’m proud of how they’ve handled so much adversity while striving to continue being your jewelers for life.

I pray that you and your loved ones have stayed healthy. Each one of you has undoubtedly experienced turmoil in 2020. It is my sincere hope that we can continue to navigate these waters together and we will see you soon, whether in our store or virtually. May 2021 be filled with peace, health and special moments, big and small. We still have much to celebrate.

TRENDING… There’s no doubt about it, 2020 has been one to remember. Our lives have changed dramatically, ushering in new jewelry trends for the next year that are simpler in design. Metals and textures make the headlines, with pavé diamonds adding extra sparkle and enamel offering a colorful pick-me-up. With so much turmoil, jewelry has taken on even more meaning and nostalgia, as reflected in charms and religious jewelry, sentimental messages, and jewelry from a bygone era.

GO BIG OR GOHOME While recent years have focused on dainty and minimalist styling, we now see trends looking back to bigger styles letting the metal do the talking. Large chains and chunky link bracelets, reminiscent of the 80s, are back. And we notice iconic shapes as well, offering personality and flair. Through the decades styles may vary, but the trend toward larger scale jewelry is coming on strong once again.

CASUAL OFFICE STYLE (PAPERCLIP NECKLACES) No matter where you work these days, we give a nod to everyone’s office this year with these gorgeous and versatile paperclip necklaces. Chains are always a wardrobe staple, no pun intended, and this year’s familiar motif is a fan favorite for sure! Sleek and sophisticated, and available in a variety of lengths, making them perfect for layering.

TALK SENTIMENTAL TOME Jewelry has always been used to celebrate milestones and special moments, often with secret messages engraved inside a ring, or photos tucked inside a beautiful locket. Now, designers are creating more overt styles with words like love, peace and hope spelled out on a necklace. Wear your heart or your faith on your jewelry with what means most to you, and carry it with you as you celebrate #HenneMoments big and small.

achel Rowland is best known as one of the most sought-

after photographers (Rachel Rowland Photography) in the city of Pittsburgh. But when she isn’t capturing love in front of the camera, she is giving her heart and soul to her family. Rachel carries within her an emotional depth and sense of humor that permeates the room when surrounded by her children. Through the chaos she smiles, as only a mother can, knowing these moments are precious and fleeting. Her children’s confidence is evidence of their assuredness in her and her life’s philosophy: “I want everyone, in every moment, to feel loved, seen, appreciated and cared for.”

Rolex founded the Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative in 2002, and since then has paired 54 of the world’s greatest artists with younger artists of exceptional promise and talent from around the globe. The purpose of the initiative is to ensure the world’s artistic heritage is passed on by pairing young artists with established artistic masters and funding them for two years of one-to-one collaboration. At the heart of the process is an exchange of talent, much like the transmission of traditional watchmaking skills from master to apprentice. Rolex has paired artists in dance, film, literature, music, theatre, visual arts and architecture. A system of grants and honorariums supports both mentors and protégés during each term of collaboration. The 2020/2021 pairs include the following men and women.

Composer and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda will work with 28-year-old Argentinian director, screenwriter and cinematographer Agustina San Martin, who won a Special Mention Jury Prize for Best Short Film at the 72nd Cannes Festival for Monster God (2019).

Visual artist Carrie Mae Weems, who will mentor 35-year-old Camila Rodriguez Triana of Colombia, whose work has been exhibited in shows in South America and Europe.

To choose the participants of the program, Rolex assembles an advisory board comprised of experts qualified to identify talented young artists from their worldwide network of contacts who meet each mentor’s profile for a protégé. To ensure impartiality, panel members remain anonymous during the selection period. The goal for Rolex is to make a contribution to global culture and to encourage an enriching dialogue between generations of artists. The program gives young artists the opportunity to benefit from the two years of guidance and inspiration of working with an artistic master in their field. Protégés over the years have commented that the experience of being mentored deepens their knowledge of their artistic discipline and boosts their confidence, profile and connections with other people in the arts. Mentors have also benefited from the relationship. It gives them an opportunity to see their art through younger eyes and refresh their own outlook on their discipline. Rolex

asks its mentors and protégés to interact for at least six weeks during the mentoring period, which takes place over two years. Most pairs spend considerably more time together. Some of the alliances have resulted in serious collaborations, leading to performances and works of art. “We at Rolex have been privileged that, for nearly two decades, dozens of the most genre-defining artists have lent their time and expertise to the Arts Initiative,” says Rebecca Irvin, program director. “The four new mentors who join the initiative’s community of creative greats have broken new ground in their respective fields, and we look forward to the impact they will have on their protégés, as they pass on their devotion to their arts in this cross-generational exchange.” At the end of the mentoring period, Rolex will invite the participants and guests to honor the achievements of the mentors and protégés at a public weekend of celebrations.

British director Phyllida Lloyd, who will mentor 33-year- old Whitney White, an accomplished director, musician/ composer and actress.

Filmmaker Spike Lee, who will mentor his chosen protégé, 33-year-old Kyle Bell, an American filmmaker whose work includes the Heartland Emmy-winning documentary show Osiyo: Voices of the Cherokee People.

DOING GOOD in the Neighborhood [KEEP ]

I n last year’s magazine we shared some organizations we believe are doing good in the neighborhood. The response was overwhelming, so we are going to make it a tradition! We encourage you to learn more about these four organizations who are making an impact on our region and future generations. At Henne we are proud to support them.

I magine coming home with your newborn and settling into your new normal. Through the sleepless nights, outfit changes and snuggles, you survive. You anticipate those first few smiles and coos, and you can’t wait to hit the milestones that every parent assumes they’ll witness. There are so many emotions, so many highs and lows. Now imagine your life turned upside-down because your child is sick. Your new normal becomes a nightmare. That’s exactly what Coleson’s family experienced. Coleson was 10 weeks old when his parents noticed he was sleepier than usual and wouldn’t eat. After a trip to the pediatrician, emergency room, and a medical facility close to their hometown, he was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, a life-threatening disease that can lead to heart failure. With Coleson needing more intense care and what looked like a heart transplant at the time, his family chose to bring him to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, where he underwent surgery to implant a Berlin Heart device while he waited for a donor. Coleson received round-the-clock care, and after 100 days he went home without the need for a heart transplant. Today he is a happy, thriving baby with a fully functioning heart. Coleson’s family credits the physicians and the workers at UPMC Children’s Hospital (and their faith) with healing their little boy, while providing them with resources that helped make their experience possible. Standing proud as a landmark in Pittsburgh, UPMC Children’s Hospital is leading the way in revolutionary healthcare standards and research practices as a nationally ranked Top Ten hospital for pediatrics. Coleson is one of hundreds of thousands of kids who received treatment this year in the state-of-the-art facility located in Lawrenceville. Understandably, receiving top healthcare can place an immense financial burden on families. Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation was created to provide financial support for the hospital’s mission of improving the health and well-being of children, teenagers, and young adults. It is the sole fundraising arm of UPMC’s Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, and its extensive programs include the following: • Child Life Program – providing art and music workshops, therapeutic play, special events, sibling support, and more • Injury Prevention – educating children and families about safety in the home, outside, at school, and everywhere else • Community Outreach – including the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, Family Care Connection, Child Advocacy Center, and others that provide critical medical services and preventive care to local kids and families • Cutting-Edge Research – providing funding for research that leads to treatments and cures for childhood diseases To learn more about how you can help support the mission of Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation, please visit their website www.GivetoChildrens.org.

S ince the early 1990s, Hosanna House has united people and resources with a single purpose in mind: ending a life cycle of poverty and helping individuals and families reach their maximum potential.Working within economically-distressed communities such as Wilkinsburg, Penn Hills, Swissvale, and many more, Hosanna House aims to create an environment where hope can grow and families flourish. One of the many ways they are achieving this goal is through direct services, such as childcare and after-school programs throughout the academic year, as well as camps in the summertime. Hosanna House has a passion for increasing children’s exposure to educational learning opportunities, specifically in STEM fields, such as robotics and aviation technology, to give them a competitive edge. They aim to empower, support, and inspire their children to reach beyond what their public education and community have been able to provide for them, and pursue careers that they may have not been exposed to otherwise. Leon, the founding CEO of Hosanna House, says, “My definition of success for these children is that when they leave our care, they will be ready to confidently move forward with the skills we have provided and that 0% will need to rely on welfare services, outside of a crisis situation, in their adult life.” Hosanna House continues to create an environment where parents feel empowered to succeed through the direct services they have received for their children as well as supportive housing, health services and job placement opportunities. Hosanna House desires for their families to build relationships fueled by trust, enjoyment, and mutual understanding, and to give families a place to celebrate their achievements in their safe and clean community venue. These services tremendously impact the quality of life for 350 children daily, over 2,000 children in the summer and the 50,000 people who come through their doors annually. Hosanna House has many on-the-ground volunteer opportunities available, including one-to-one mentorship and tutoring, and welcomes financial support and additional opportunity resources for their educational programs. “An investment into our children now will reap generational benefits for their lives, their families and the future of our city,” Leon says. To get involved today, please reach out to Hosanna House Director of Development and Social Impact, Gloria Nelson (glorian@hosannahouse.org) for more information.

“ALL

WALKS

OF LIFE”

O ver the last 27 years, Imani ChristianAcademy has served as an alternative to public education for children in Pre-K through 12th grade. The vision for Imani was born out of a desire to create a learning environment that was safe and free of violence, with Christ as the foundation of their education. When asked what sets Imani apart, Paulo Nzambi, CEO & Head of School, answered immediately, “Our unwillingness to compromise our faith in God in pursuit of excellence in education. We believe they are one and the same.” As an academy that educates 152 students per year, Imani believes that children cannot learn and grow unless they have been shown love first; and use Christ’s example to heal their students’ spirits, develop self-esteem within each child, and foster a new vision of their own unique potential. Serving a student body of 98% black students, Paulo acknowledges the utmost importance of strengthening a healthy cultural identity and providing positive role models to his students that they might not find in their own personal lives. “Our children know they are in a safe place with us, where they are encouraged to explore their own unique talents and interests that may very well differ from their cultural norm. We are here to encourage our students to grow beyond what society has told them they should be.” An astounding 100% of their seniors graduate, and all without the rigorous academic curriculum, spiritual formation, and support services offered at Imani, their students may have ended up in very different circumstances. 100% of their seniors graduate and all have a secondary education plan, whether that be attending college or a trade school. Several of them have received full or partial academic scholarships for their secondary education paths. This track record has been repeated consistently since Imani’s founding and represents a remarkable post- graduation story – particularly when one considers that, on a national level, fewer than 65% of African-American males finish high school. Operating as a 501c3, Imani offers many ways to support them financially, through personal and business donations. They are also seeking after-school tutors and special program volunteers, student tuition sponsorships and ongoing tech support. For more information on how you can help impact a student’s life, please contact their Director of Development, Barbara Nicholas (BNicholas@imaniadmin.org). Written by Jessi Johansson, with contributions by Mordy Rudolph

R abbi Mordy Rudolph, with his wife, Rivkee, founded The Friendship Circle of Pittsburgh (FC) together in September 2006. Now in their fourteenth year of operation, they offer over 150 programs per year, engage approximately 550 people from around the greater Pittsburgh area and serve as a catalyst for community inclusion and social change. Rabbi Mordy and Rivkee began FC with a desire to help remedy one of the most painful aspects of living with a disability, namely social exclusion and isolation. They understood that opportunities for friendship were both invaluable and rare. They developed the core of Friendship Circle of Pittsburgh, which provided a place that welcomed and valued the uniqueness of each member and provided opportunities for fun, friendship and opportunities to contribute their abilities and make FC of Pittsburgh even stronger. For members with disabilities, it has always been a place where they can be their authentic self, accepted for who they are. “We made an intentional decision not to be another ‘therapeutic‘ program in our members’ lives. This was guided by the firm belief that it is the opportunities that need to change, not the members,” says Rabbi Mordy. “An inclusive community is one in which every member is valued and an intrinsic part of that community. It’s what we have developed at Friendship Circle, and that is what we work toward in the greater community.” Friendship Circle of Pittsburgh’s story continues with the pandemic, during which they understood the importance of staying connected, especially since the natural social networks of many members are disproportionately limited. Without missing a beat, they were able to connect more than 250 members during the pandemic stay-at-home orders. All programs and services of Friendship Circle of Pittsburgh are free and 100% community funded. This is a testament to our wonderful city and its residents. However, with this year’s lack of opportunities to fundraise, FC will be entering 2021 carrying a financial deficit. Membership of those with and without disabilities remains the number one priority, but they continue to be deeply grateful for support. For more information on how to contribute financially, please visit www.fcpgh.org/donate.
