R abbi Mordy Rudolph, with his wife, Rivkee, founded The Friendship Circle of Pittsburgh (FC) together in September 2006. Now in their fourteenth year of operation, they offer over 150 programs per year, engage approximately 550 people from around the greater Pittsburgh area and serve as a catalyst for community inclusion and social change. Rabbi Mordy and Rivkee began FC with a desire to help remedy one of the most painful aspects of living with a disability, namely social exclusion and isolation. They understood that opportunities for friendship were both invaluable and rare. They developed the core of Friendship Circle of Pittsburgh, which provided a place that welcomed and valued the uniqueness of each member and provided opportunities for fun, friendship and opportunities to contribute their abilities and make FC of Pittsburgh even stronger. For members with disabilities, it has always been a place where they can be their authentic self, accepted for who they are. “We made an intentional decision not to be another ‘therapeutic‘ program in our members’ lives. This was guided by the firm belief that it is the opportunities that need to change, not the members,” says Rabbi Mordy. “An inclusive community is one in which every member is valued and an intrinsic part of that community. It’s what we have developed at Friendship Circle, and that is what we work toward in the greater community.” Friendship Circle of Pittsburgh’s story continues with the pandemic, during which they understood the importance of staying connected, especially since the natural social networks of many members are disproportionately limited. Without missing a beat, they were able to connect more than 250 members during the pandemic stay-at-home orders. All programs and services of Friendship Circle of Pittsburgh are free and 100% community funded. This is a testament to our wonderful city and its residents. However, with this year’s lack of opportunities to fundraise, FC will be entering 2021 carrying a financial deficit. Membership of those with and without disabilities remains the number one priority, but they continue to be deeply grateful for support.
