BEST PLACE TO work

WORKING HARD, HAVING FUN & TAKING CARE OF EACH OTHER

On May 6, 2021, the Indiana Chamber of Commerce and Best Companies Group announced its list for the top companies in the state, awarding Reis-Nichols Jewelers the title of one of the Best Places to Work in Indiana.

A

As a family-owned business, Reis- Nichols has a deep history of taking care of the community and its employees. In a world where retention is rare, more than 15 percent of Reis-Nichols employees have been a part of its family for over 20 years. “We couldn’t be more proud to receive this honor,” said BJ Nichols, President of Reis-Nichols Jewelers. “Creating a great culture for our Reis-Nichols family is a big priority for us. Our company motto is “Work Hard, Have Fun, and Take Care of Each Other,” and this year, taking care of each other was even more important than ever.”

CUSTOMER LOYALTY THAT GOES BEYOND JEWELRY Since 1919, Reis-Nichols has built a reputation for being one of the country’s most prominent and well-respected privately- held retail jewelers. It has done so through a commitment to small business values, a passion for the community, and a dedication to its employees. From Top Golf to the Porsche Sprint Race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and from Food Truck Fridays to Indianapolis Indians games; employees enjoy time spent together with co- workers and family. Over the years, Reis-Nichols has worked hard to cultivate an inclusive family atmosphere where everyone who walks through the doors feels like they are a part of the heart and soul of the company—employees and customers, alike. “We believe that when employees feel like family, that sentiment extends to the quality of service,” explains Nichols. People throughout Indianapolis and beyond have come to trust the Reis-Nichols name as the best place to go for their most memorable purchases. Most customers walk through the doors looking for more than just accessories—they are looking to make an investment, too; and many times it’s the emotional investment that matters the most. The team at Reis-Nichols

delivers by listening and celebrating with each and every one of their clients through all of life’s journeys. As a respected member of the local community, Reis-Nichols has also taken its philanthropic involvement seriously. In 2019, the company accepted the Governor Eric Holcomb’s Century Award—an award given to companies throughout Indiana who have withstood the test of time and have been in business for more than 100 years. This honor is testament to the company’s commitment to their employees and the community. They have proven throughout the years just how deeply they care for those outside the organization. The company has even implemented a watch battery charity program, which exchanges watch batteries and their replacement for a donation. The program has raised well over $1 million for local causes and is just one way that Reis-Nichols gives back to the community which it is so proud to be a part of. Reis-Nichols is honored to be named one of Indiana’s Best Places to Work in 2021—a crowning achievement for all of the hard work and continued commitment to its employees and the community.

a new store design that puts customers first 20 GREENWOOD years in

Reis-Nichols works hard to bring you the very latest in jewelry and watches, not just the trends, but the unique interpretations and exclusive editions that set some pieces apart from others. In the same way, Reis-Nichols works hard to make sure its stores are state-of-the-art, not just in terms of lighting, ventilation, and furnishings, but with designs that are as aesthetically pleasing as the jewelry and watches they showcase. With that in mind, Reis-Nichols is completely renovating their Greenwood store and are planning a party to celebrate! The goal was to create a comfortable, relaxing, and beautiful place to visit, one that is uniquely Reis-Nichols. A look of rugged elegance was chosen for both the interior and exterior décor of the Greenwood store, which creates a space that is still very elegant, yet laid-back and relaxed. It combines sophisticated steel and rustic brick with natural elements like fine woods and

stone. It’s a calm, earthy, luxurious aesthetic with high ceilings that will remind you of an open vista. The design includes exclusive spaces and brand boutiques where you can shop the store’s top designer brands, including a new 500-square-foot Rolex boutique, along with a fully-certified Rolex watch repair center. “When we arrived in Greenwood in 2001, we were so full of excitement to be part of the Greenwood community,” says former vice-president and family member Cindy Nichols, who is now retired. “We had an amazing new store and couldn’t wait to open our doors and share our family jewelry story with them. The absolute best blessing of our two decades in Johnson County has been our relationship with our customers. We’ve met so many new and wonderful faces; it’s truly been an honor to be a part of their lives and welcomed into their families.”

22 ] REIS-NICHOLS JEWELERS MAGAZINE

As Reis-Nichols celebrates 20 years in Greenwood, the goal of the renovation was to create an exceptional customer experience for those clients. “We have given special consideration to making sure everyone feels like their experience here is a luxurious one,” says Reis-Nichols merchandising director and renovation project manager Jennifer Demmary. “Before the renovation, our Greenwood location was a typical high-end jewelry store. Now, it’s next-level. We want the experience in our Greenwood store to match that of our flagship location at Keystone at the Crossing, which was renovated in 2017.” Reis-Nichols jewelry consultant Brent Maple says the remodel will create an easy flow through the showroom and the result will feel luxury, comfortable, and unintimidating. “It will be impossible to not be drawn to the façade when driving on US 31,” says Maple. “There really is nothing else like it in Greenwood! As a jewelry consultant, it will improve my ability to provide generations of clients with a comfortable luxury shopping experience and allow us to provide that same experience to jewelry buyers who may have never been in our showroom previously.” The pictures don’t do it justice! Come and see the new space for yourself at the Grand Opening celebrations in early December— just in time for the holiday shopping season. The annual spectacular holiday party, with catered food and drinks, will be extra-special this year.“We will be rolling out the red carpet for this Hollywood-themed event, with a few special treasures on hand to view exclusively at the party,” says marketing director Teresa Shaffer. “And some of our designers will join us with special pieces curated for the event.”

Winter Blues GOODBYE ALGARVE PORTUGAL IN JANUARY

There are many options for escaping the harsh cold of January, but the Algarve has got to be an easy choice. When we visited, the weather was warm and sunny, the Portuguese custard tarts were to die for, and we had a great time exploring Albefuira, the sea caves, and further afield. We even ventured to Portugal’s highest point at Foia.

30 ] REIS-NICHOLS JEWELERS MAGAZINE

BENAGIL CAVE Standing on the beach of Benagil cave was certainly awesome, and it was the highlight of our short trip. The water lapped onto the sandy beach and echoed as it crashed and whooshed up its walls. Wet shells glistened around us, and our bare feet left new footprints in the deep, damp sand. Rock formations rose from the floor, but even more electrifying were the predominantly orange strata in the rocks which formed the cave around us. They were illuminated by the sunlight, which streamed in through giant holes in the roof, the blue sky intensifying their color. No wonder it is considered one of the world’s great natural wonders. It is a phenomena that can only be reached by boat, and it requires a skilled boatman in a small craft. Even with those things, it was not possible to land, and we scrambled overboard,

splashed into the water, and waded ashore. The boat retreated, not to return until it was time to leave. Sometimes the water appeared bright green; at other times it turned iridescent blue— the result of light filtering through the water as we moved and the depth changed. The cave stretched way back and slopped upwards. Its size was immense. We roamed and photographed for about half an hour before the boat returned. Then as the swell was sucked towards the entrance and ebbed and flowed, we ran towards the boat and clambered on board. On this calm day, and at low tide, it is difficult to imagine that this immense cave had been carved out by the action of the sea. At times, the powerful waves fill the entire space, and its crashing swell is responsible for the openings in its roof.

REIS-NICHOLS JEWELERS MAGAZINE [ 31

THE ALGARVE COASTLINE FROM THE SEA In addition to Benagil cave, our boat took us on a tour along a considerable length of the Algarve coast. We entered many sea caves and encountered many coves. Some caves were large, some small, and some deep. Once inside, they often became dark. Everytime we entered one, we felt like Pinocchio must have felt when he was swallowed by a giant whale. Looking back, the entrance resembled an open mouth with an endless narrowing gullet stretching ahead. Overhead the roof became the creature’s ribs. Often the water appeared light, bright, and sparkled, as light filtered through from outside. Now and again it turned inky, navy blue. Always inside the caves there was the loud sound of crashing waves, as the water splashed against the walls—the action which had created them over thousands of years. We also marveled at the stacks which rose out of the water and enjoyed passing beneath rock arches. There were beautiful sandy

coves, many of them only accessible by boat. There were shoals of fish in the clear water and giant jellyfish bobbing along. We noticed a few people high on the rocks above. One was even fishing! The length of his line made it seem impossible to cast successfully, but he had it down. He would certainly need super human strength if he caught anything bigger than a fish which would fit onto a small plate. We were sure a fight for anything bigger would send him tumbling into the water below. With such a dangerous coastline for fishermen, it is not surprising to see a lighthouse which, for us, created a picturesque scenic moment, but for them is often a life saver. At one point we headed out to sea so we could appreciate the shoreline from a distance. As the boat sped out towards the ocean, it created waves topped with white crests, spraying us with salty droplets. Not entirely unwelcome, as the sun was hot and unrelenting. During our return, we held on tight as we raced towards the shore at top speed in order to beach the boat as far as possible out of the water. It was then time for a cold beer and a coke at the beachside bar.

ALBUFEIRA In Roman times, Albufeira was known as Baltum, but was re- named Al-Buhera by the Moorish settlers in the 8th century. It was finally taken from the Moors in the middle of the 13th century by the Knights of the Order of Santiago. Like many Algarve towns, there were castle remains dating from Roman times, but most of those, along with the town, were destroyed in the 1755 earthquake. The most visible pointer to the that castle remains is the Torre do Relógio (clock tower), which was built on one of the old castle towers. On festive occasions, it shines like a beacon in the dark sky, as it is illuminated for celebrations. It also has a tiny but fascinating museum, which we thoroughly enjoyed Until the 1960s Albufeira was a small fishing village, but with the advent of tourism, substantial development turned it into a major

holiday resort. Even so, it retains much of its original charm, and in Old Town, it still holds the essence of the village it once was. Narrow cobbled streets wind up and around the hillsides, and typical single- storey houses line the roadside. There are two main beaches in Albufeira. Our hotel was positioned on the cliff top with panoramic views across one of these. The beautiful Algarve coastline extended as far as the eye could see. There is also a marina and harbor, which lies on the western outskirts of the town. I walked along the coastal path, which eventually became very narrow as it passed by homes where clothes hung outside and a friendly dog came out to greet me. The resort is packed with restaurants and bars, although many of these were closed as it was out of season, but we still found some enjoyable places to eat. Our favorite even had entertainment.

UP INTO THE MOUNTAINS Most winter visitors take time out to move away from the coast to enjoy the more mountainous hinterland. We were no exception and pointed our rental car towards Silves and Monchique, en route to Foia, the highest point in the Algarve. Silves is regarded as the best non-coastal northern town of the Algarve. We were led to believe that it was very different from the developed resort towns, but we found it packed with tourist shops. Monchique, on the other hand, we enjoyed very much. It was along this route that we encountered dozens of storks nesting on the telegraph poles, their enormous nests precariously balanced. We also stopped at a pottery and bought several items, including clay chimney pots. These characteristic intricate chimney toppers were on homes everywhere, and I loved them and photographed far too many. The town had lovely views, and a short walk brought us to a great coffee stop with wonderful stone walls, a barrel brick ceiling, and a great atmosphere. On the hillside of Monchique grow the trees which supply the corks for champagne bottles. We saw many of these which had been stripped of their bark, but always in a manner which would not destroy them. Much is also used today by craftsmen to make all types of tourist gifts. At Portugal’s highest point at Foia we stopped to admire the views. FARO Having reached the city, we made our way to the harbor. It was quiet except for a few fishermen mending and sorting their nets. We took an overview tour, but it was the old district which appealed to us most, encircled by an ancient Moorish city wall, which we accessed through narrow city gates where there were more nesting storks. The cobbled streets, the square, the orange trees laden with ripe fruit, the cathedral, and the ambience are our fondest memories. At the heart of the old town is the Sé cathedral, and from the top of the clock tower, there are wonderful views over the city and the Ria Formosa Natural Park. There was a film crew working in the

square and inside the cathedral, but we were still invited inside, and as we admired its lavishly decorated interior, the organ played.

RIA FORMOSA NATURAL PARK The famous Ria Formosa Natural Park consists of 45,000 acres of marshlands protected by 37 miles of sand dunes and islands. It prevents the ocean from entering the marshlands and is an ideal habitat for water birds, reptiles, and amphibians. It is an amazing place, and a boat tour with a biologist in summertime is a must. In winter there are some great walks looking out over this unique natural reserve. FOOD In recent years, the Portuguese custard tart has found its way into bakeries in many countries, but nothing matches those found locally. There is something very satisfying about sinking your teeth into one, freshly-baked and served with a steaming hot cup of coffee, as you sit in the warm sunshine. You will soon discover that it is only one of many cakes and pastries, all well worth trying. The Portuguese consume more fish per capita than any other Mediterranean country, so be adventurous. Try the cataplana de marisco —a seafood feast. The dish gets its name from the copper pan it’s cooked in: a cataplana, a pan with two rounded sides connected by a hinge that opens and closes like a clam. It contains onions, garlic, and tomatoes, which are stewed with glugs of white wine, clams, whole prawns, and chorizo. PERFECT CHOICE We found that Faro is easily accessible from many local UK airports, which eliminates the stress associated with travel from the larger international airports. From Bristol, it was just over a two hour flight and another half an hour by car brings you to Albefuria, which is a popular choice for many. It is a winter destination we would highly recommend.

MARCO EVER-EVOLVING THE NEWNESS OF

Marco Bicego proves that jewelry doesn’t just have to be something you wear, but rather it can be an outward extension of our own transformations throughout life. Each collection begins as classic core wardrobe pieces, which Marco then evolves into more detailed, and sometimes colorful, intricate works of art. Marco has dedicated fall 2021 to three focus additions: Marrakech Onde, Jaipur Link with pendants, and classic gold Lunaria. It is as much about the journey of the jewelry as it is the journey of the woman who wears it for every occasion of her life.

THE MARRAKECH COLLECTION , for instance, sheds light on Bicego’s timeless and evolutionary thinking in wearable, classic jewelry. No one could have predicted that a broken machine and a coiled chain from 20 years ago would blossom into Marco’s signature hand-twisted Marrakech collection to become the newest iteration: Marrakech Onde Blooming Diamond. Recognized instantly, Marrakech is continuously evolving and now includes delicate interlocking oval links and twisted strands with stunning arrays of blooming diamond flowers. Both timeless and elegant, the Marrakech Onde Blooming Diamond flowers complement any style and are versatile, sensual, and evolutionary in every way imaginable. This collection is a physical display of Marco’s love of tradition and inspiration for putting a contemporary twist on modern jewelry.

THE NEW JAIPUR ADDITIONS allow you to transform your classic gold necklace or bracelet to create an entirely different style with the addition of a pendant, or two, or three! Playful and interchangeable, the Jaipur pendant collection is designed to be complementary to every style and occasion. Dress it up or dress it down—the Jaipur pendant line is made for everyday wear. They are hand crafted in gold with touches of diamonds or vibrant gemstones and designed to match the exceptional quality of all Marco Bicego pieces. Marco is revolutionizing the way we think about his collections.

ONE OF MARCO’S MOST POPULAR COLLECTIONS, LUNARIA, is also evolving this year to include delicate and lightweight, yet bold cuffs, earrings, and rings. Born from Marco’s love of nature and the sight of soft flower petals blowing in the wind, the newest styles in the Lunaria collection carry on that legacy. Hand-engraved 18k gold petals are framed with polished gold and then hand-carved to perfection. Graceful and elegant, the Lunaria collection’s newness transforms how we see nature, and withstands the test of time. It remains a tried-and-true staple for any woman to have in her jewelry collection.

EVEN THROUGH THE EVOLUTION OF COLLECTIONS, MARCO BICEGO’S JEWELRY RETAINS A FAMILIARITY AND CONNECTION TO ITS ORIGINAL DESIGN AND THE HERITAGE OF THE BRAND. WITH BOTH HIS DISTINCTIVE HAND ENGRAVING AND COILING TECHNIQUES, THE ARTISANAL, HANDMADE ASPECT CREATES A UNIQUE FEATURE IN WHICH NO TWO PIECES ARE EXACTLY ALIKE. CLASSICS REVISITED 20 21 YURMAN DAVID David Yurman works with his favorite motifs and iconic designs this year to bring us new collections that are fresh and classic at the same time. Whether it’s a new interpretation of the Art Deco aesthetic, a renewal of the signature Cable motif, or a flash of light represented by rays of metal and diamonds, David Yurman’s creative genius shines through.

Angelika drop earrings with pavé diamonds.

Angelika four point necklace in 18k yellow gold with diamonds.

ANGELIKA: The Angelika collection incorporates many of the technical refinements explored through David Yurman’s high jewelry creations.Angelika was a year in development, and what makes it unique are the individual sculptural filaments radiating from a central point in the collection’s designs. Each delicate filament has its own square shape with a surface textured by Cable, diamonds, or a smooth, high polish. When bundled together, the fineness and delicacy of the filaments create not only movement but an ethereal play of light. The collection is available in both 18k gold and sterling silver. Each metal ray is hand finished, and the diamonds are hand set.

ELEMENTS: In this collection, David Yurman explores the circle, a timeless symbol of unity—a shape without beginning or end. With unique gemstones thought to bring healing and strength, the pieces in the Elements collection are the ultimate amulets. They appeal to the person who is seeking meaning in their jewelry, allowing each wearer to create their own personal story about who they are and how they connect with the world.

THOROUGHBRED LOOP: This season, David Yurman returns to his equestrian roots with a new collection inspired by boleadoras or the bolas, a loop used by Argentine and Uruguayan gauchos to round up cattle. David transforms this simple form into sculptural bracelets, rings, and handcrafted chains. As with all of his equestrian-inspired collections, Thoroughbred loop mixes silver and gold, emphasizing the beauty of metal without gemstones.

secondary and tertiary aromas, which are often referred to as the wine bouquet. These are from chemical reactions that occur during the fermentation process, such as the wine’s exposure to wood or the type of yeast used. You can also assess whether the wine is dry, sweet, acidic and whether it contains a lot of tannins, which add balance and complexity to the flavor. FIND THE BALANCE A balanced wine will be pleasant to drink if all of its components—taste, sweetness, body, and level of tannins—are balanced and complement each other well. OVERALL IMPRESSIONS Once you’ve considered all the factors mentioned above, you should be able to paint an overall impression of the wine you’re tasting. It can take some time before you develop a good nose for great wine, and you may want to practice your skills by taking wine tasting courses. Many wine guides will provide detailed reviews for various wines. You can test your abilities by judging a glass of wine and then refer to guides and see if your assessment is similar. IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHICH WINES ARE WORTH YOUR MONEY, YOU’LL NEED TO BE ABLE TO JUDGE WHICH WINES ARE THE BEST. BEGINNERS OFTEN MAKE THE MISTAKE OF BUYING WINES THAT HAVE ATTRACTIVE PACKAGING. HERE ARE SOME PROFESSIONAL TIPS THAT WILL HELP YOU JUDGE WINE MORE ACCURATELY.

LOOK FOR CLARITY You should start by assessing a wine based on its clarity. Start by swirling some wine in a glass, and you’ll notice that some of the wine sticks to the side of the glass. If you spot any residue or particles on the side of the glass, that is a sign that the wine hasn’t been properly bottled. This would lead to poor clarity. Cloudy wines that have poor clarity are not very flavorful and can taste rather dull. CHECK FOR COLOR There are many types of wine, and each has its own unique color. Familiarize yourself with what shade the wine you’re looking at should be to assess if it meets those criteria. Even if the wine has good clarity, it’s not worth buying if the color is off, as this usually indicates a problem in the fermentation process that can affect its taste. Rosé wines should appear either pale to deep pink or dark salmon color. Red wines are typically pale to deep ruby, garnet, or purple. White wines are usually pale to deep gold, straw, or yellow. Sherry and port are usually pale to deep brown or amber. Some ports and red wines can even have a tawny color. IF YOU’RE STARTING OUT AS A WINE COLLECTOR AND CONNOISSEUR, YOU MIGHT FEEL OVERWHELMED— THERE’S SO MUCH TO LEARN. MAYBE ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT SKILLS TO LEARN, HOWEVER, IS HOW TO EVALUATE WINE.

ASSESS THE BODY AND TASTE Body, in terms of wine assessment, refers to the fullness of its taste. A full-bodied wine will have a robust taste and flavor. You need to learn what the body should be for the variety of wine you’re tasting. Some wines are meant to have more body than others. To assess the body, swirl the wine in a glass and notice how the sides drip back down into the glass—it should fall in sheets if it’s full-bodied and will break into lines if it’s medium-bodied. Light-bodied wines shouldn’t cling to the sides of the glass and will fall back down immediately. When you taste wine, you should be able to note fruity aromas, which will differ according to the kind of fruit that makes up the wine, as well as the kinds of flowers that grow nearby. You might also pick up some

Reis-Nichols Jewelers is well known for its show-stopping assortments of diamond and designer jewelry as well as fine timepieces, but there is far more to their selection than meets the eye. With deep roots in jewelry manufacturing, Reis- Nichols began making jewelry dating back to the early 1900s. And today, Reis-Nichols is home to some of the industry’s leading experts, including gemologists, designers, diamond setters, goldsmiths, and engravers. The team, led by master jewelry designer André van Bergeijk, still employs the same high-quality craftsmanship used more than a century ago, never compromising their standards of excellence. Over the years, the Reis-Nichols name has become synonymous with attention to detail, endless creativity, and a commitment to high-quality service, all displayed eloquently through their custom designs. CUSTOM DESIGN Industry-leading

Working with award-winning jewelers means you get access to exceptional artists that are skilled in handcrafting anything your mind’s eye can create. The company utilizes in-house computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) equipment to elevate the expertise and skills of its jewelers. This equipment allows for more precise replication of the design sketch jewelers put to paper during your initial consultations. CAD/CAM color renderings produce a level of detail not achievable through conventional methods still used by others in the industry, making it easier for you to not only visualize what your jewelry piece will look like, but actually try on a wax model of it prior to creation.

CREATING SOMETHING SPECIAL What makes the Reis-Nichols experience so special is their ability to take an idea and turn it into a unique custom-made jewelry piece—your one-of-a-kind design. Every custom design has a story. One of the most highlighted and talked about pieces that came from the Reis-Nichols shop this year was a diamond and sapphire bangle made with love for a bride on her wedding day. “The design matched the lace of her wedding dress. We also used mom’s diamond in the middle and set a small yellow diamond on the inside for her good friend who passed away when they were younger. It was very thought out and [the jewelers] captured everything the client envisioned perfectly.” – Tracie Walters, Reis-Nichols sales consultant From drawing, to CAD to 10 hours of setting, this piece was an all-hands-on-deck project that was completed in less than two weeks and left both the bride and her parents speechless.

A MASTER’S MILESTONE This year, Reis-Nichols master jewelry designer, André van Bergeijk, celebrated his 40th anniversary with the company. As an award-winning designer, André is recognized across the Midwest as one of the top designers in the industry, and Reis-Nichols is proud of all he has accomplished over the past four decades. “He is an an amazing custom jeweler, fabricator, and wax carver. André has designed many award-winning pieces, and he is not only an artisan but a true artist,” said BJ Nichols, president of Reis-Nichols Jewelers. “He is legendary not only for his commitment to the industry, but for his for his commitment to Reis-Nichols for the past 40 years.”

André is the store’s lead designer with years of experience and skills that have led to some of the most stunning custom designs to ever cycle through a jewelry shop. You might have seen some of his work in Butler Blue’s collar and in many of the pendants gifted to the Indianapolis 500 Festival princess court each year. André has the unique skill of taking anything a client envisions and bringing it to life, often blowing their expectations out of the water. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication over the past 40 years, André. Cheers to many more!

ROLEX AWARDS FOR ENTERPRISE 2021

ROLEX SUPPORTS THE EXPLORERS OF TODAY WHO DEDICATE THEMSELVES TO ENVIRONMENTAL CAUSES

46 ] REIS-NICHOLS JEWELERS MAGAZINE

T

To Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex, the world was a living laboratory. He sent Rolex watches to the world’s most extreme locations, supporting explorers who ventured into the unknown. The world has changed since then, and as the 21st century unfolds, the company has moved from championing exploration for the sake of discovery to protecting the planet. Rolex still sends its watches into the unknown, but today, it also supports individuals and organizations who use science to understand the world’s environmental challenges and devise solutions that will restore balance to our ecosystems. The Rolex Awards for Enterprise, launched in 1976 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Rolex Oyster chronometer, are one of the three pillars of the Rolex Perpetual Planet initiative. It is dedicated to helping exceptional individuals with innovative projects that expand our knowledge of the world, improve human well-being, and protect the environment. Here are this year’s five laureates:

The five laureates in this year’s Rolex Awards for Enterprise are pioneers whose visionary projects have the potential to help reinvent the future. They include a wildlife conservationist, a polar explorer, a climate change scientist, a marine scientist who is exploring coral reefs, and a social entrepreneur fighting malnutrition in Africa.

RINZIN PHUNJOK LAMA is a scientist and environmentalist from Nepal who works to protect the diverse ecosystems of the Trans-Himalayan region, home of iconic and globally threatened mammals. Lama’s project is science-based, using field surveys and camera-trapping techniques to establish the baseline number of mammal species, while supporting the development of new enterprises that will expand the possibilities for local people’s income.

FELIX BROOKS-CHURCH is a social entrepreneur from the U.S. who, after witnessing malnutrition while working on educational programs in developing countries, devised a program to tackle malnutrition in Tanzania. He does it by equipping rural flour mills with dosifier machines, which fortify staple foods with micronutrients.

LUIZ ROCHA , a marine scientist from Brazil, is working to explore and protect coral reefs and their biodiversity in the Indian Ocean. His aim is to strengthen conservation of these largely unknown ecosystems. Rocha will research their suitability to shelter at-risk species from shallower reefs that are threatened by global warming.

HINDOU OUMAROU IBRAHIM , a climate activist from Chad, uses indigenous peoples’ traditional knowledge to map natural resources and prevent climate conflicts in the Sahel region of west-central Africa. Ibrahim believes women are key to her initiative because they remain close to nature, using the terrain and powers of observation to solve problems. She compares women’s wisdom to apps on a smart phone. “My best app is my grandmother,” she says.

GINA MOSELEY , a polar explorer and climate change scientist from the United Kingdom, aims to lead the first expedition to explore the planet’s northernmost caves in Greenland to improve our knowledge of climate change in the Arctic. The Arctic is warming at more than twice the rate of the global average, Moseley says, and understanding more about how this sensitive part of the world responds in a warmer world is crucial.

ROLEX IS DEDICATED TO INNOVATIVE PROJECTS THAT EXPAND OUR KNOWLEDGE OF THE WORLD, IMPROVE HUMAN WELL-BEING, AND PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT.

“Rolex has long recognized its responsibility to play a part in creating a sustainable planet, a Perpetual Planet,” says Arnaud Boetsch, Rolex’s director of communication and image. “Rather than venturing into the unknown and discovering uncharted lands, the new breed of explorer is committed to protecting the planet. The five laureates are prime examples of these guardians of the future.” They will receive funding for their projects and other benefits, such as

worldwide publicity, which often engenders further support. “The 155 projects supported by the Rolex Awards for Enterprise for nearly a half century have had a real impact on the world, with millions of people around the globe benefiting,” says Boetsch. “Marked by individual achievement, excellence, and performance, the Laureates and their projects reflect the values that have underpinned Rolex from its earliest days.”

CARTIER FORTIFIES THE TIMELESS TANK AND GOES ECO-CONSCIOUS

The redesigned Tank Must is one of Cartier’s latest savvy remasters. Here, the Tank is paired with Cartier’s “Must” designation, a reference to its can’t-live- without accessibility. The revamped line includes new colors, smaller sizes, and a strap that is the star of the show: It is made of 40 percent plant matter; thus geared to the growing masses of eco-conscious buyers. Specifically, they are made using waste from the processing of apples grown for the food industry in Europe. Cartier touts them as an ecological alternative to calfskin and says they will be rolled out across other Cartier collections in the near future. The updated quartz-based Tank Must also incorporates a new eco-movement technology called photovoltaic. It involves creating perforations in the dial through the Roman numerals that allow solar energy to reach the photovoltaic cells hidden under the dial. It took two years to develop and works in conjunction with what Cartier calls the SolarBeat movement, which has an average lifespan of 16 years.

TWO MOTORSPORT BRANDS CELEBRATE THEIR NEW PARTNERSHIP

CARRERA PORSCHE CHRONOGRAPH A NEW PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THE GERMAN SPORTS CAR MANUFACTURER AND THE SWISS WATCH BRAND HAS ALREADY RESULTED IN A NEW TIMEPIECE, ONE THAT BEARS A NAME THAT THE TWO BRANDS SHARE: CARRERA. TAG HEUER

The TAG Heuer Carrera Porsche Chronograph is based on TAG Heuer’s Carrera Sport Chronograph design, with its distinctive tachymeter scale engraved on the bezel. It introduces a number of features inspired by Porsche’s design aesthetic, including Porsche’s engraved inscription, which is visible on the bezel. The same font is used for the indexes, and the numerals suggest those on the dashboard of Porsche sports cars. The Porsche colors of red, black, and grey are incorporated throughout the watch and also recall historic Heuer models.

The rotor, which can be seen through the open caseback, is designed to resemble Porsche’s steering wheel. The dial’s asphalt effect was created especially for this watch. It contains the in-house caliber Heuer 02 manufacture movement with an 80-hour power reserve and comes on a calf leather strap with stitching that echoes the Porsche interior or on an interlocking bracelet designed to recall streamlined racing design. The 44 mm case is steel.

The collaboration between the two brands extends beyond product development into competitive racing. The TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team has already set a milestone at the opener in Diriyah (SA) in November 2019, with second place finish. In its second year, the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team, which uses all-electric cars, will fight for the World Championship. Porsche has long distinguished itself in endurance events, and together with TAG Heuer, its GT Team will compete in the coming FIA World Endurance Championship, along with series partnerships in ten editions of the Porsche Carrera Cup. In addition to physical competitions, TAG Heuer also engages in virtual racing by supporting the Porsche TAG Heuer Esports Supercup. TAG Heuer is naturally stepping in as global partner in Porsche’s classic events and rallies as well. Beyond the broad-based partnership in motorsports and esports, TAG Heuer and Porsche also share a passion for golf and tennis. Golf has been a focal point of the TAG Heuer Connected watch developments in recent years, with the TAG Heuer Golf app. Porsche, for its part, is running its own golf activities, such as the Porsche Golf Cup, and has been the sponsor of the Porsche European Open golf tournament since 2015, both of which TAG Heuer will join. The two brands will also team up for events in the tennis world, including Porsche’s own tournament, the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, of which TAG Heuer will be the Official Timing, Watch and Chronograph partner.

LOOKING BACK, THE TWO BRANDS HAVE A LONG HISTORY OF COLLABORATIONS OR SIMILAR ACHIEVEMENTS .

After a class win in the Carrera Panamericana race of 1954, Porsche called its most powerful engine the Carrera. In 1963, Heuer created its first Carrera chronograph to help race car drivers time their laps. In the late ’60s, Heuer signed a sponsorship deal with Fribourg, Switzerland-based racing driver and Porsche dealer Jo Siffert, who wore the Heuer logo on his car and suit. Siffert also bought Heuer watches at wholesale prices and resold them to his racing friends. It was this connection that led Steve McQueen to wear the Heuer logo on his racing suit during the filming of Le Mans in 1970, in which he drove a Porsche 917. McQueen said at the time, “I drive the same car as Jo Siffert, and I want to wear the same suit as him.” TAG Heuer, the name assumed by the Swiss watch brand when it was sold to the TAG Group in the mid-1980s, was a founding partner of the Formula E championship, helping to raise the profile of single-seater races in electric cars. Porsche created its own Formula E team with TAG Heuer as title and timing partner in 2019. In the mid-1980s, TAG Heuer developed and produced the Tag-Turbo engine with Porsche that powered the McLaren team to win two consecutive F1 titles with Niki Lauda in 1984 and Alain Prost in 1985.
