Each set includes a strand of cultured pearls and a pair of cultured pearl stud earrings that she can wear dressed up or down, for any occasion. Mikimoto pearls are passed down from generation to generation, often being used as the something borrowed on a daughter’s wedding day.

LAVISH HER IN BLUE Over the last decade, blue sapphires and tanzanites have become popular gemstones of choice. With their rich, blue hues, these rare and lavish gems are prized by royalty and gemstone collectors and are now seen widely for everyday wear. When mom wears her blue gem, she’ll be reminded that she is the queen of your heart and of the family, for years to come.

Antony Sprason STORE MANAGAER

Chattanooga, TN (423) 894-1188 Antony.sprason@finks.com

Selling jewelry is a lot more fun than selling sports cars. Now, we know what you might be thinking, but it’s true — at least that’s what Fink’s store manager Antony Sprason says. And if there’s one guy that would know, it’s him. Sprason came into the jewelry industry about a decade ago, and before that, he sold everything from sports cars to sports jackets and suits. Now he’s having a lot more fun creating customer relationships and developing the team at our Chattanooga location. People who meet Sprason know he’s a fun, charismatic guy, so we sat down with him to learn more about what makes him tick. How do you help couples find the perfect engagement ring? I like to talk to them and get to know a little more about them as a couple. I have a set of questions to ask to make their job easier and make sure I’m offering them what

they want, but it’s best to approach each couple differently. Each couple is going to have a different background, a different budget, and they’re all going to be looking for something different, so I vary process based on each couple’s individual needs. What is your favorite product that Fink’s offers customers? What brought me into the business was watches. I’ve always been a fan of timepieces and the intricacies that go into watches. It fascinates me. There’s nothing else on the planet, outside maybe your heart, that has to work every second of every day. It’s amazing what a watch can do and has been able to do for years, just by using a bunch of tiny cogs.

What are your favorite spring pieces this year? My favorite David Yurman collection is Novella. I personally love an emerald cut, and the Novella collection’s main gem is emerald cut. I love an emerald cut because it shows the true, natural quality of the gem. When you combine this with the color of the gems and the diamonds, it looks awesome, especially in gold. I also like the Paveflex collection, it looks phenomenal in gold. What do you love doing when you aren’t working? In terms of hobbies, I enjoy spending time with my wife. I enjoy driving, as well. I go to the car meets, meet the other enthusiasts. I’m about to go down to Atlanta to the Porsche Driving Experience Center with mine and push it around the track.

Ike Savvas SALES & COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT The Streets at Southpoint Durham, N.C. Ike.savvas@finks.com “Jewelry is trust and confidence.” At least, that’s how Ike Savvas looks at it, and he might be onto something. As a 33-year veteran in the jewelry industry, Savvas has earned customer trust and confidence, due to an obvious expertise in jewelry and watches. In 1996, Savvas settled in Greensboro, NC, where he got his start in jewelry, working his way up from a part- time employee to a store manager. In 2010, he joined the Fink’s family, bringing with him years of knowledge, customers, and unmatched loyalty to the community that Fink’s serves. Savvas is our long-time community

Who or what inspires you to be better today than you were yesterday?

development and outreach representative, partnering with local charities and organizations, not just in the Durham area, but also in Greensboro. Savvas says it’s important to give back to a community that’s taken care of Fink’s, especially during such as challenging time as the COVID-19 pandemic.

I would have to say my grandchildren. I have two granddaughters who live in Houston, TX. Before them, I would say my kids, but now that I have grandchildren, they are my inspiration. What are your favorite spring pieces this year? The new Roberto Coin Spring collection is my favorite for the spring. I really like the Written in the Stars collection. My favorite Roberto Coin collection of all time is the Princess Flower collection. What do you love doing when you aren’t working? I love to travel, play golf, and fish, especially down in Southport or Bald Head Island. I also really like to play golf in Florida, sometimes in Orlando or at Pebble Beach in the summertime. Where is your personal happy place? The store is my happy place. If you have fun at work, then it doesn’t feel like work, right? I also like to go back to Greece and visit my family. My mom and dad are still over there, but recent events have made it difficult to go back and see them.

“I may have left the [Greensboro] store, but I haven’t left the community.”

Some of the many organizations Ike is involved with include The Rotary Club, Family Services of Greensboro, American Heart Association, Operation Smile, Hands for Hearts, JDRF, Make AWish, and the Greensboro Symphony. We asked Savvas some fun questions about himself. Here’s what he had to say: What is your favorite product that Fink’s offers customers? My favorite jewelry line is Roberto Coin, and my favorite watch brand is Rolex. Roberto Coin reminds me of a lot of the jewelry I’d see back in Europe, and Rolex because it’s the best watch made in the world. Rolex is meant to be passed down from generation to generation.

BREITLING NAVITIMER B01 CHRONOGRAPH

TUDOR 1926

OMEGA SEAMASTER PROFESSIONAL DIVER 300M

CLASSIC The 1926 collection is named in honor of the year Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf registered the name of what would become an important sister brand to Rolex. It endures as a great example of a modern classic, with sporty overtones and plenty of value. It’s a basic three-hand with date window at 3 o’clock, using the automatic Tudor caliber 2824, based on the ETA 2824 with a 38-hour power reserve. The “waffle” textured opaline dial is classic, yet the numerals, markers, hands, and logo are a sporty blue, which gives it a fresh, contemporary classic look. The 41 mm steel case is water resistant to 100 meters.

COMPLICATED The Navitimer was one of the world’s first chronographs, introduced in 1952, with an automatic version to follow in 1969. It has remained a classic, instantly recognizable for its very distinctive circular aviation slide rule on the bezel. The 46 mm wide by 14.5 mm thick model is a larger-than-life take on the Navitimer, and with hands and markers coated with Super-LumiNova, you can’t miss it. It contains the chronometer- certified in-house Breitling 01 automatic movement, with a 70-hour power reserve.

SPORT The Professional Diver was recently upgraded with one of Omega’s elite movements, the Master Chronometer Caliber 8800. It is one of a new family of calibers by Omega that have been certified by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS), a measurement testing lab that runs the watches through a series of tough trials to standards that exceed the requirements of the Swiss Chronometry lab known as COSC. This 42 mm model is crafted from stainless steel and includes a blue ceramic bezel with a white enamel diving scale. It has a helium escape valve and is water resistant to 300 meters.

BREITLING CHRONOMAT LADIES’

TAG HEUER LINK

CARTIER TANK SOLO

CLASSIC One of the world’s most recognizable watches, the Tank was created in 1917 to commemorate the Renault FT-17 tank that England sent into the Somme battle in 1916. the now famous case, with its side stanchions, takes its inspiration from an overhead view of the Renault armored tank, and the bracelet links were meant to mimic the tank’s treads. Many variations of the signature design have been introduced since then. The Tank Solo in steel contains a quartz movement and a classic silvered opaline dial with the model’s signature railway track index and Roman numerals.

JEWELED The Link has been a pillar of TAG Heuer’s collections since the 1980s, with its signature double row of S-shaped bracelet links instantly recognizable. And there is nothing like a sprinkle of diamonds to add new life to a classic favorite. The diamond edition of the link is set with just under a carat of perfectly matched round brilliant diamonds on the bezel and markers, against a backdrop of mother-of-pearl. The 32 mm stainless steel case and bracelet are given a fine brushed/polished finish. The movement it quartz with hours, minutes, seconds, and date function.

FUN / FASHION FORWARD The Chronomat has been in the Breitling collection since the 1980s, but this is the first model designed for women. It’s a simple design, with markers rather than numerals, and diamond bezels, and there are 10 different references. Pictured here is the automatic 36 version, with diamond setting and a copper dial, in steel and 18k red gold. It contains a Breitling-made automatic movement. Breitling launched the new Chronomat Ladies’ 36 and 32 collection last year with some help from a squad of celebrity ambassadors: actor Charlize Theron, ballerina Misty Copeland, and Chinese actor Yao Chen. The packaging is made from recycled fishing nets and can itself be recycled.

This is the first time the bracelet has been applied to a watch outside the professional sport range and the first time it has been used on the Sky-Dweller, debuting on the 18k yellow gold model. The Oysterflex may look like a rubber bracelet, but it is much more than that. It is made of a very soft, flexible elastomer with an internal cushion system that makes it extremely well fitting and comfortable. The elastomer is molded to fit over a flexible metal blade made of a titanium and nickel alloy, so you get the strength of metal and the comfort of rubber- like elastomer, along with a sporty look. The Rolex Glidelock on the Oysterflex bracelet has six notches of approximately 2.5 mm, allowing the bracelet length to be adjusted easily, up to some 15 mm. Rolex went a long way to make sure the Sky-Dweller with the Oysterflex bracelet is an extremely comfortable watch — easily worn while traveling — but it is also an extremely functional complication. It has a date window, with the signature Cyclops lens cover, and it is a dual timer, with a 24-hour second time zone for reference time on the inner dial ring. A clever month index is shown discreetly as a red square in a window behind each hour marker on the center dial. For example, January is represented by 1 o’clock, February by 2 o’clock, and so on. The border of each tiny opening is chamfered to perfection. The Sky-Dweller is equipped with the Ring Command system. This mechanism of interaction between the rotatable bezel, the winding crown, and the movement, developed and patented by Rolex, allows the user to select the watch’s functions one- by-one — calendar (date and month), local time, or reference time — by turning the fluted bezel counterclockwise by one, two, or three positions, respectively. The selected function can then be rapidly adjusted in either direction using the winding crown.

The simple and intuitive Ring Command system is a complex mechanism consisting of around 50 components. Its design demanded state-of-the-art watchmaking and micromechanical expertise. At the heart of this system are a double cam and levers that engage various gear trains inside the movement, according to the function selected. One of these cams is activated by pulling out the winding crown; the other is driven by rotating the bezel to activate setting wheels located in the middle case of the watch.

The movement, Rolex 9001, is one of the most complex calibers created by the brand. It features a blue Parachrom hairspring, 72-hour power reserve, and exceptional shock resistance and accu- racy. The 42 mm case is yellow gold, with Rolex’s signature fluted bezel, which catches the light like a well-cut diamond.

Which watch brand have Presidents throughout the years been seen wearing most often? Rolex. The Day-Date has been nicknamed “the President” ever since Dwight Eisenhower wore one in the 1950s. Many Presidents since have followed, creating somewhat of a tradition. What world-changing event brought wristwatches into mainstream use? World War I. A few wristwatches had been worn in earlier wars, but it was World War I that exposed large numbers in the military to the convenience of no-hands time-telling in combat. When the men returned home, they brought their new wristwatch habits with them, and the fashion spread quickly. Who was the first man to wear a watch on the moon? Buzz Aldrin. Although Neil Armstrong was, of course, the first man to walk on the moon, he left his watch, an Omega Speedmaster issued to him by NASA, in the lunar module when he made his famous first step. When, about 20 minutes later, Aldrin took his turn on the surface, his Speedmaster became the first watch worn on the moon. What wristwatches have fetched the highest prices at auction? The highest price paid for a watch at auction, to date, was the Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime Ref. 6300A, which sold in 2019 for an astounding $31 million. Another high- value historical sale was the 1968 steel Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Reference 6239, once owned by Paul Newman. It brought $17.8 million, including buyer’s premium, at a New York auction in 2017. The Rolex was what has come to be called a Paul Newman model because of its association with the actor. What watch did Charles Lindbergh design? The Longines Hour Angle. He designed it as an aid for pilots navigating by celestial observation. It was introduced in 1931.

How did TAG Heuer’s Carrera model get its name? The watch, introduced in 1964, was named after an extremely dangerous auto race that ran 3,100 kilometers from one end of Mexico to the other. The race was run five times, from 1950 through 1954, but was discontinued, because it was so treacherous. It was resurrected in 1988.

Which watch company was the first official timer of the Olympic Games?

Heuer, predecessor of today’s TAG Heuer. debuted as the official timer at the summer games in Antwerp, Belgium. Heuer, which specialized in chronographs, also timed the Olympics in 1924 and in 1928.

When the watch design was introduced, in 1919, the military tank was a new and much ballyhooed invention, first used in battle in 1916. What now-famous watch did Elvis Presley wear in the 1961 movie Blue Hawaii ? A Hamilton Ventura. He wears a black-dial version of the watch in several scenes. The finned and futuristic Ventura, designed by Richard Arbib and introduced in 1957, was the most avant-garde version of the Hamilton Electric. The Breitling brand has long been known for its associations with pilots and flying. When did they start? In 1939. That year, the company signed a contract to make chronographs for Britain’s Royal Air Force. After that, aircraft manufacturers and others in the aeronautics world signed deals with Breitling. Tudor began updating and relaunching its dive watches in 2012 with the introduction of the Heritage Black Bay. Since then, the award-winning Black Bay has become a favorite in an era when the steel sports watch reigns supreme among collectors. Tudor BlackBay

Today’s models retain many of the design signatures of the original 1950s and ’60s Tudors, but they are stronger, with sleeker designs, state-of-the-art movements, and other modern updates that include intricately constructed bracelets and luminescent markings on the dials. The dial retains the model’s

signature snowflake hands and square hour markers, which first appeared in 1969. The goal of the thick hands with large counterweights was to allow for abundant luminescent material, thus guaranteeing high legibility in all conditions. Some of the largest navies in the world have also chosen to use these for their diving personnel, including those from France, the U.S., Canada, and Italy. In the 1960s, the snowflake hands were used on two different diving models, references 7016 and 7021. It wasn’t until the 1990s that watch collectors nicknamed them snowflake hands, because they are reminiscent of the shape of a partial snowflake.

Another tribute to original Tudor dive watches is the big, unguarded crown, which is also reminiscent of early Rolex Submariners (Rolex and Tudor are sister brands), and details like the polished bevel on the case and the signature rivet construction of the bracelet. The modern rivet bracelet is state- of-the-art, including ceramic spring-loaded pin snaps built into the clasp for long wearability and a divet system that makes it sizable. The anodized blue bezel is notched with micro-knurling on the outside for easy grip and includes a small iridescent pearl

for countdown timing. All markings are luminescent, including hands and indexes on the dial. The stainless steel case is 41 mm wide and 14.8 mm thick. It is water resistant to 200 meters. The modern Tudor Black Bay is an overall package that meets every demand for a professional sports watch, but it is also makes a hefty fashion statement and looks as good in the boardroom as it does at the beach.

Three years later, Ferdinand’s son, later known as Ferry, was born on September 19th in Wiener Neustadt. Ferdinand then began his long love affair with car racing. In 1910, The Austro-Daimler touring car designed by Ferdinand Porsche scored a triple victory in the Prince Henry Trials. On September 3, 1875, Ferdinand Porsche was born in the Bohemian town of Maffersdorf. In 1889, after attending grammar school there and the Staatsgew- erbeschule (State Vocational School) in Reichenberg, he entered his father’s busi- ness as an apprentice plumber. The following year, The Lohner- Porsche electric car was presented at the World Fair in Paris. The wheel hub en- gines of the young engineer Ferdinand Porsche brought him international atten- tion. In the same year, he developed an all-wheel-drive racecar, as well as a hybrid petrol/electric vehicle — a world first. By 1906, Ferdinand Porsche had become the Technical Director at

Motoren-Gesellschaft in Stuttgart. He soon designed the legendary Mercedes Compressor Sports Car. Immediately, the two-litre racecar developed under his aegis won the Targa Florio. The Mercedes-Benz S-Type models he designed continued to dominate international motorsports through 1927. In 1931, Ferdinand Porsche opened an office for engineering and consultation on engine and vehicle design in Stutt- gart. Created for such renowned man- ufacturers as Wanderer, Zündapp and NSU are not only entire vehicles, but such trend-setting detail solutions as the Porsche torsion bar suspension.

The year is 1933 — a tenuous time in Germany. For Auto Union, Porsche de- velops a Grand Prix racecar with a 16-cyl- inder engine in mid-ship configuration. The rear-engine vehicle concept designed for the compact car (Type 32) developed for NSU is ultimately incorporated in the Volkswagen Beetle. The following year the company received an official order for the design and construction of a Ger- man Volkswagen. Only one year later, the VW prototype is test driven. The Ur Beetle is assembled in the garage of the Porsche villa in Stuttgart. In 1935, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche was born in Stuttgart. He is the eldest son of Ferry Porsche.

Over the next nine years, Ferdinand oversaw construction of production facil- ities for Volkswagen and was instrumental in the growth and popularity of VW’s Bee- tle. During the year 1939, Porsche built long-distance endurance competition race cars nicknamed The Berlin-Rom-Wagen. These incredible racers are considered the forefathers of all later Porsche sports cars. Owing to the wartime conditions of 1944, Ferdinand moved the Porsche KG engineering office to Gmünd in the Aus- trian province of Carinthia. Two years later, under the direction of Ferdinand’s son Ferry, design of an all-wheel drive Grand Prix racecar — the Cisitalia (Type 360) — was begun for Italian industrialist

Piero Dusio. At the age of 72, Ferdinand realized his family’s dream. In 1948, the 356 becomes the first sports car to bear the Porsche name. No. 1, as it is known, was roadcertified in June. Just one month later, the lightweight mid-engine roadster won its first class victory at the Innsbruck Stadtrennen. With the class victory of a 356 SL at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1950, the young sports car manufacturer Porsche won international acclaim. That same year, with the 356 in full production back in Germany, company founder Ferdinand Porsche died at the age of 75.

In 1953, the famous Porsche 550 Spyder debuted at the Paris Auto Show. Powered by an extremely quick 4-camshaft engine, the light and agile racecar scored countless international triumphs. In 1956, coinciding with the compa- ny’s 25th anniversary celebrations, the 10,000th Porsche 356 left the factory. At the Targa Florio, the Porsche 550 A Spy- der logged an overall victory for the first time. Throughout the early ’60s, Porsche dominated the European racing circuit, with more overall victories at the Targa Florio and the 12 Hours of Sebring. One year in Formula 2, Porsche finished first, second, and third in the 150 Miles of Aintree in Great Britain. In 1962, the 50,000th Porsche, a 356 B, rolled off the assembly line. In Weissach, the first segment of the new test grounds became operational. In Formula 1, Porsche won the French Grand Prix. In 1964, Porsche 911, launched in the

previous year as the 901, went into series production. Two years later, presented as the Safety Cabriolet, the Porsche 911 Targa was introduced and entered series production. In 1968, Porsche achieves its first overall victory at the 24 Hours of Daytona with the Type 907-8. The grand successes of the previous year at the 1,000-kilometre race on the Nürbur- gring and the Targa Florio were repeated. The 911T won the Monte Carlo Rally. The following year, Porche again wins the Monte Carlo Rally, the Targa Florio, and for the first time, wins the World Cham- pionship of Makes with the 908/02 and the new 917. More Porsches were introduced over the next four decades, including the 914, 924, 928, 944, 959, Boxster, Carrera GT, Cayenne, Cayman, and the all-new Pana- mera, but none have enjoyed the loyalty or longevity of the famed 911, now enter- ing it’s 57th year in production. The Porsche Principle is Porsche’s

Magna Carta. It is based on values and philosophies that, together, create added value. The Porsche Principle is about a company that consistently goes its own way. In public life they decline subsi- dies. Social acceptance is paramount to Porsche. On the business base issue, Porsche is committed to Germany and is proud of the “Made in Germany” cachet. Porsche has definite ideas on how they develop and produce their vehicles. In ad- dition to maximum cost-effectiveness, ve- hicles must comply to the incredibly high standards Porsche established for them- selves. Quality, environmental protection, and safety are what counts most. Porsche integrates their suppliers in the develop- ment process from the very first new car concept. The Porsche Principle is also about responsibility to the customer, and to Porsche’s heritage — a heritage rooted in motorsport, where Porsche has written history on the track. Porsche concentrates on what they do best: building sports cars.

Breitling has completely redesigned its Chronomat collection, keeping it true to the original, which became a cult favorite when it was launched in 1984, because of its distinctive tube- like linked bracelet. The redesign leaves most of the model’s signature features intact, including the integrated onion crown and the distinctive rider tabs at 3 and 9 o’clock that allow the bezel

to be used as either a count-up or a countdown timer. Most notably, though, is the unmistakable rouleaux bracelet with its rounded, tube-like stainless steel links. “There are very few distinguished steel bracelets out there,” says Breitling CEO Georges Kern. “A design like this is very unique, but very recognizable. It’s like the Porsche 911, which is a classic design that has evolved over time but

essentially remains the same.” The new collection includes a Bentley edition, with a British racing-green dial to mark its ongoing partnership with the British luxury car brand. There is also a Frecce Tricolori Limited Edition, celebrating the acrobatic flight team that inspired the original Chronomat. The chronographs in the line are powered by the Breitling Manufacture Caliber 01,

with a 70-hour power reserve. Breitling has also finally introduced a ladies’ version of the Chronomat, and it’s a full collection with several options in two sizes. The design is classic and minimalist, with markers rather than numerals on the dial and a diamond bezel to add a feminine touch. There are 10 references, with case options including stainless steel, 18K gold, or a

combination of both. Dials for the 36 mm include lacquered white, pale green, midnight blue, or copper, and for the 32 mm, white or midnight blue. The 36 mm contains a Breitling automatic mechanical movement, and the 32 mm contains an in-house SuperQuartz movement with a 3-4-year battery life. The ladies’ Chronomat was launched with help from a squad of celebrity

Breitling ambassadors: Charlize Theron, an Oscar-winning actor; Misty Copeland, a ballerina and the first African American woman to become a principal dancer; and Yao Chen, an award-winning Chinese TV and film actor. Breitling also debuted new packaging that is made from recycled fishing nets and can itself be recycled.

A GOOD DAY TO SPARKLE!

Sparkling wine might seem like an extravagant purchase, but it can be sanity-saving — the difference between a stellar day or one that is decidedly mediocre. Bubbles have a way of scouring away the blues, making even meatloaf night a bit brighter. So, perhaps it’s time to loosen the purse strings just a little bit and party again (while holding the spending to a low roar). Hip-Hop stars may have popularized the higher end $200 French champagnes, further putting this recession-flogged wine segment on a pedestal. But over the past several years, Italian proseccos and Spanish cavas, satisfactory substitutes for the French stuff, have increased their market share. Selection is at an all-time high, and they often cost under $20 per bottle.

Most French champagne and American sparkling wines are made from chardonnay and pinot noir grapes (a third, pinot meunier, is often blended in). But Italian prosecco and Spanish cava producers use indigenous grapes that are easier and less expensive to grow. The Italians turn to a perfumey grape called prosecco for this namesake bubbly. It’s lightly fizzy and refreshing and can be absolutely beautiful, and occasionally complete rubbish. To avoid the wineries looking to make a quick buck, shopping by name or at least a specific region is imperative. Look for those from Veneto in northeastern Italy as well as the sub-regions of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene.

4 3 • F I N K ’ S J E W E L E R S

The main factor that makes prosecco less expensive can be found in the method used to infuse the famous bubbles. The costly Méthode Champenoise (in the method of Champagne), the way most bubbles are born, involves a second round of fermentation done in the bottle plus many months of aging. But the fizz in prosecco is introduced using the Charmat method. They pump the wine into a huge tank, add additional yeast and sugar to start the sparkling second fermentation, then seal the tank to capture the carbon dioxide, which creates the bubbles. Unromantic, yes, but the cost savings allows us to guzzle prosecco with decadent abandon. If you have a sweet tooth, look for labels bearing the term Extra Dry (oddly enough, this means it is less dry). Otherwise, brut prosecco is similar to the drier brut champagnes.

ENOUGH OF ITALY AND ON TO SPAIN Cava, named after the caves in which this sparkling wine is aged, is Spain’s solution to champagne. Producers create the bubbles with Methode Tradicional ( Méthode Champenoise to the Spaniards) — yet cava’s flavor can be earthier and less refined because they use indigenous macabeo, parellada, and xarello grapes. That doesn’t mean Spanish bubbly is less refreshing or celebratory — just different. And cava has a nice ring to it, no? It’ll impress your date. Tightly regulated under Spanish wine laws, cava is principally produced in the Penedes region in east central Spain. You’ll find both white and rosé versions, with varying degrees of sweetness (from driest to sweetest): brut nature (rarely seen in the US), brut, semi (or demi) sec or dulce (dulsec). A bit of exploration will go a long way toward finding an affordable sparkling wine that will dazzle your taste buds without requiring a second mortgage. So try a few, and who knows, you may find the perfect bubbly to make meatloaf night a grand celebration!
