DAVID SENSINGER GET TO KNOW THE FINK’S JEWELERS FAMILY
D avid Sensinger is the new watch buyer for Fink’s Jewelers, joining the home office in Roanoke, VA, at the beginning of 2023. For as long as he can remember, David has been around jewelry, spending many of his childhood days in his mother’s jewelry shop in Baltimore, MD. Try as he might to do other things, his passions always led him back to the jewelry counter. Now, we’re excited to welcome him in Roanoke as he learns a whole new side of the business. YOU’RE ABOUT TO CELEBRATE 10 YEARS WITH FINK’S. WHAT HAS THE JOURNEY BEEN LIKE FOR YOU? It’s certainly been the most enjoyable of all my experiences. Coming from big box chain stores to an independent, family-owned business is a drastic change. At the other places, you’re more of a number. But at Fink’s, you’re valued more as a person and an asset to the company.

WHAT ARE YOU ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR NEW ROLE SO FAR? I think learning a new side of the business and the company is fun and interesting. Taking the watch buyer position also gives me the chance to spend more time with my two sons. I’m a single full-time parent, so being there for them more is just one of the many perks of this new job. But I’m also amazed at the sheer volume of inventory Fink’s manages and all that goes into the backside of the company. It’s been a transition but an exciting one. WHERE DOES YOUR WATCH ENTHUSIASM COME FROM? The first watch I ever owned was a Breitling, which was a gift from my mother. She owned a jewelry store when I was growing up, but I didn’t have much interest in watches. It wasn’t until later on, when my friends started asking questions and pointing out my timepiece, that I really took an interest. The rest is history from there. WHAT IS A UNIQUE HOBBY YOU HAVE? I love hiking, running, and craft beer. But my favorite hobby is probably going to any concert I can. My kids make fun of me because I’m always trying to get them to go with me. But I’ll travel a couple hundred miles to watch a show if I can make it. The largest event I’ve been to is the Blue Ridge Rock Fest, and I’ve seen Iron Maiden countless times. I absolutely can’t get enough.

A t the turn of the 20th century, a visionary entrepreneur based in London was on the verge of success. His aim? To introduce the watchmaking world of the day to an as-yet- unknown dial signature: Rolex. As Hans Wilsdorf recounted in his memoirs of the early days of his company, the opposition he faced seemed insurmountable at first. An orphan at the age of 12, with nothing other than his determination to help him overcome challenges, Hans Wilsdorf went on to invent the world’s first waterproof self-winding wristwatch with a Perpetual rotor — a watch that has become a benchmark in terms of quality and prestige. “Too complicated, too fragile, ill-adapted” — the wristwatch was met with skepticism. Yet, relying on his firmly-held beliefs, Hans Wilsdorf managed to achieve his bold objective of establishing the Rolex watch — the Oyster Perpetual — as the archetype of the waterproof timepiece: precise, robust, and able to withstand all conditions. But he was not simply a visionary who endowed Rolex watches with their fundamental technical and aesthetic characteristics. His constant quest for perfection was accompanied by a profound generosity and unshakable faith in human potential. UNITING EXPERTISE An integrated and independent company, Rolex has manufacturing resources that encompass a wide range of skills and knowledge. A WATCH UNLIKE THE REST The Oyster Perpetual collection was built on the success of the original
Oyster model, patented by Rolex and launched in 1926. As the world’s first waterproof wristwatch, it played a pioneering role in the development of the modern timepiece. Over the years, the Oyster became the proud bearer of many other innovations — such as self-winding by means of the Perpetual rotor (1931) — that defined the identity of the models in the collection and forged Rolex’s reputation for excellence, of which chronometric precision and reliability are among the cornerstones. I n our fast-paced world, we often forget to take a moment to just breathe. Breathing exercises are an excellent way to reduce stress, improve mental clarity, and even boost physical health. Let’s explore the benefits of breathing exercises and how you can incorporate them into your daily routine. First off, breathing exercises can help reduce stress and anxiety. When we’re stressed, our bodies enter a state of fight or flight. This is a natural response that’s designed to help us respond to danger, but when we’re constantly stressed, it can wreak havoc on our bodies. Breathing exercises help activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the body’s relaxation response. This can help reduce stress and anxiety, improve mood, and even lower blood pressure. So, when you’re feeling like a hot mess, take a deep breath and let it go.
Breathing exercises can also improve mental clarity and focus. You know, that feeling when you’re trying to focus on work, but your mind keeps wandering to your plans for lunch? By focusing on your breath, you can quiet the mind and reduce distractions. This can help you become more present in the moment. So, how can you incorporate breathing exercises into your daily routine? There are many different techniques you can try, but one simple exercise is deep breathing. To do this exercise, sit or lie down in a comfortable position and place your hands on your belly. Take a deep breath in through your nose, allowing your belly to expand. Hold your breath for a few seconds, and then exhale slowly through your mouth, allowing your belly to deflate. Repeat this exercise for several
minutes, focusing on the sensation of your breath as it moves in and out of your body. Another technique is the 4-7-8 breath. To do this exercise, sit or lie down in a comfortable position and breathe in through your nose for a count of 4. Hold your breath for a count of 7, and then exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of 8. Repeat this exercise for several minutes, focusing on the sensation of your breath as you inhale and exhale.

N atural fancy intense yellow diamonds are rare: for every colored diamond found, including fancy blue and pinks, there are at least 10,000 colorless ones. Yellow color in diamonds becomes noticeable to most people around grade M (the color scale for diamonds runs from D colorless to Z). When the color is very intense, it is classified as a fancy colored diamond. For fancy colored diamonds, the deeper, purer, and more saturated colors are usually the rarest, most costly, and most desirable.

HOW TO BUY A COLORED DIAMOND Three of the most important factors impacting the price of a natural colored diamond are strength of color, rarity of color, and size. 1. Strength of color: The color intensity of a natural colored diamond can be graded as Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Intense, or Fancy Vivid, with Fancy Vivid constituting the highest grade. The stronger the intensity of a colored diamond, the higher the value will be. 2. Rarity of color: The rarity of a colored diamond will affect its price. The more common colors, such as gray, brown, and yellow, will generally have a lower cost than rarer colors, such as pink, blue, green, purple, and orange, which occur less frequently in nature. The rarest known and most expensive color of all is red. However, very high grades of color in a yellow diamond will make it more valuable than others. 3. Size: Colored diamonds very rarely come in large sizes. This makes them exponentially more expensive.
