DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT

S ethi Couture was founded in 2009 in San Francisco by designing sisters Pratima and Prerna Sethi with a simple philosophy of “Elevate the Everyday.” Raised by parents who are purveyors of rare and unusual diamonds, Pratima and Prerna were surrounded by the most exquisite stones at an early age, so their childhood included an education in antique, vintage cuts, and rare natural-color diamonds. Careers in traditional jewelry, however, was not in their stars immediately. Instead, they set out on a different path.

SETHI COUTURE’S PRATIMA AND PRERNA ARE COMMITTED TO CREATING TIMELESS PIECES THAT CELEBRATE YOUR PERSONAL STORY. ELEVATE the EVERYDAY

After receiving her MBA, Pratima began a career with a luxury brand and Prerna, who had originally studied architecture, changed course to pursue an interest in fashion. Eventually fate intervened, and their desire to design elevated everyday jewelry essentials with the same diamonds they grew up admiring could not be ignored. The sisters came together to form Sethi Couture, and in 2009 they launched their first collection of fine jewelry. Right from its initial launch, Sethi Couture debuted a series of diamond bands in unexpected colors, including champagne, pink, green, yellow, and black. This unique assortment quickly evolved into a collection of classic and contemporary stacking bands that can be worn together in endless ways to showcase each wearer’s individual style. Each Sethi Couture band tells your story— your past, present, and future that can be cherished everyday.

DESIGNED TO BE PAIRED WITH FAMILY HEIRLOOMS OR YOUR PERSONAL COLLECTION OF RINGS, THE SETHI STACKS ARE WHERE OLD MEETS NEW.

T he overarching sentiment spanning across all sectors of jewelry lately is all about not taking things too seriously. When it comes to colors, this translates to brighter being better than ever before. And while colorful candy-necklace-inspired beads and vibrant Ring Pop-energized gems aren’t a new trend, the degree to which they’re being interpreted is.

BY ANNIE DAVIDSON

W hen it comes to color, nothing shines as brilliantly as a fancy-colored diamond. Faceted diamonds reflect more light — called brilliance — than any other gem, because they are harder than any other gemstone. A colored diamond is like a neon light. The intense color is absolutely stunning. This year, they are showing up on red carpets, in engagement rings, and in very special pieces of fashion jewelry. Color in diamonds is a rare occurrence, which adds to their mystique. For every colored diamond found, there are at least 10,000 colorless ones. Pinks, blues, and greens are the rarest. Pinks are especially prized, sometimes commanding prices of up to $400,000 per carat — 20-times the price of equivalent white diamonds, due to rarity and market demand. The most readily available and accessible natural- colored diamonds are champagnes, cognacs, and yellows. F ancy DIAMONDS

ROBERTO COIN JEWELRY INSPIRED BY THE BEAUTY THAT SURROUNDS US

A great jewelry collection is one that has that extra spark of creativity, something that tells you it was created by a designer who sees the world through a special lens. When Roberto Coin looks at a glorious garden, he sees diamonds set in flower patterns. When he looks at great architecture, he sees a cuff bracelet in hand-finished gold. He is inspired by travel, culture, the oceans, the animal kingdom, and by the beautiful women who wear his jewelry.

Inspired by the floral decorations of Venetian palaces, the PRINCESS FLOWER COLLECTION by Roberto Coin represents the material shape of the most romantic side of a woman’s imagination — made up of the flowers that bloom from the hands of skilled artisans and the princesses that live inside every single woman.

10 DAVIDSON & LICHT MAGAZINE

This year, Roberto was inspired by the culture and climate of the Navarre region of northern Spain, a beautiful area dotted with vineyards and olive groves, charming villages, and Gothic cathedrals. The capital, Pamplona, is famous for its running of the bulls. The NAVARRA COLLECTION is classic yet modern, in the same way that Navarre is a mix of modern and ancient cultures. It is based on a distinctive pattern of intertwined solid links, interpreted as gorgeous gold bangles trimmed with diamonds or lariat-style necklaces with ruby-trimmed toggle clasps.

Roberto Coin combines his technological prowess with time-honored craftsmanship to create the new VERONA COLLECTION . The four- petaled floral motif repeats in diamonds and in engraving, even reappearing in the gallery of each piece as a reminder of our inner beauty.

LUXURIOUS LUSTRE

Pearl

trends W ith pearls dominating the latest designs in both fine and high jewelry, which styles should be on your radar? Here’s a quartet of ideas sure to enhance your wardrobe. TO ADD LUSTRE TO YOUR WARDROBE

PEARL STATION NECKLACE Vice President Kamala Harris is largely responsible for driving this trend, capturing the attention of fashion editors and fans alike when she regularly wore— and continues to wear — a station necklace, so named for the pearls stationed at regular intervals on a white- gold chain. The versatility of this piece is another reason it’s so appealing, equally stylish with a crisp white shirt and a pair of jeans as it is with a sleek black dress.

Pearls can be natural, meaning they were formed in the oyster with no human intervention, or they can be cultured. Natural pearls are very rare and found mainly in the Gulf region of the Middle East. Understandably, they carry a hefty price tag. Cultured pearls run the gamut as far as price goes. At the least expensive end of the spectrum are freshwater pearls, ranging in color from cream to pink, from gray to lavender, and even gold hues. They are cultivated mainly in ponds and small lakes in China. Freshwater varieties are also sometimes dyed various colors for use in inexpensive fashion jewelry.

PEARL CHOKER

While the traditional pearl necklace is eternally classic, it’s the choker length, most often measuring

between 14 and 16 inches, that’s enjoying an uptick in interest among younger consumers. This shorter style definitely seems to resonate with fashion fans who previously may have viewed pearls as something worn by their mother or grandmother but now see a choker- length design as a fun, chic addition to their wardrobe.

ASHOKA: FIERY BRILLIANCE AS DISTINCTIVE AS IT IS BEAUTIFUL

Kwiat’s spectacular ASHOKA ® cut has an arrangement of 62 facets, making it as distinctive as it is dazzling. ASHOKA ® diamonds appear up to two color grades higher than their GIA grading report, as well as 30-50 percent larger than diamonds of the same carat weight. It’s like an emerald cut but more elongated and with more facets.

KWIAT CUSHION: A CLASSIC CUT REFINED

Since it was first developed in the eighteenth century, diamond lovers have adored the cushion cut — a pillow-shaped stone with romantic appeal. At Kwiat, the standards for a beautiful cushion are so specific that they developed a proprietary diamond cut. The Kwiat Cushion has an elegant, elongated silhouette, with a perfect outline, beveled edges, and rounded corners. It is a true brilliant cut with more sparkle and fire — and without the crushed ice look of a modified cut. And unlike most cushions, it looks bigger than a round brilliant diamond of the same weight.

ROLEX DEBUTS 2022

R olex just keeps getting better and better. This year’s introductions include a new GMT-MASTER II with its crown in a novel position, a yellow gold YACHT-MASTER 42 (yellow gold watches are hot!), a redesigned OYSTER PERPETUAL AIR-KING , and a groovy floral DATEJUST 31 — four new models to lust after, destined to be future collector’s pieces.

The great novelty of the new GMT-MASTER II is the position of the crown and the cyclops date window on the left, with the crown facing toward the hand. Rolex lefty models are a rarity (as they are from most brands), and this one is exceptional. The green and black color combination is exclusive to this line, and it’s worth noting that two-tone Cerachrom itself is rare. Rolex introduced its proprietary ceramic formula in 2013, and it is only used on certain sports models. The watch has the model’s signature Cyclops lens magnified date window and the option of either a Jubilee or Oyster bracelet.

24 DAVIDSON & LICHT MAGAZINE

The OYSTER PERPETUAL AIR-KING , Rolex’s tribute to explorers of the skies, has been updated this year. It’s still the same 40 mm size, with the satin brushed Oyster bracelet and EasyLink Oyster clasp, and it still has the beloved black dial with signature green lettering and seconds hand. The case, however, has been redesigned. Now it has straight sides — like the majority of the brand’s professional category watches — as well as a crown guard. The applied numerals are now filled with Chromalight, Rolex’s proprietary luminescent material, which makes the watch more legible. The hands and triangular hour marker at 12 o’clock, as well as the 3, 6, and 9 numerals, now have a longer-lasting intense glow, making them more visible in the dark. Another big difference is that now there is a 0 before the 5 on the minutes scale, so each five-minute interval is marked by two digits. The Air-King was originally launched in 1958.

The YACHT-MASTER 42 is special for many reasons, but there is something extra magical about the combination of black dial and yellow gold case found on the new model. It adds an infusion of classic elegance to this otherwise sporty line. The model is easily recognizable for its bidirectional rotatable 60-minute graduated bezel made entirely from precious metal or fitted with a Cerachrom insert in high-technology ceramic. The hour markers and hands are optimized with Chromalight, which makes them visible in the dark, and even in daylight, they have a brighter white hue. It contains the Rolex caliber 3235, and like all Rolex watches, it carries the Superlative Chronometer certification, which ensures excellent performance on the wrist. The Yacht- Master 42 is also available in white gold.

The dial of the new ROLEX DATEJUST 31 is decorated with a floral motif in a choice of azzuro blue (with a fluted bezel), olive green, or silver (with diamond bezels). Lovers of detail will note the combination of matte, sunray and grained finishes on each flower, a subtle way of differentiating each one. Also, the center of each flower is set with a diamond. These dials are decorative enough to make them feminine and unique, yet not flashy or overly girly. As usual, Rolex gets the balance just right.

PURE SPORTS MODELS

T he Black Bay Pro is the star of Tudor’s 2022 lineup, which is saying a lot, since the brand is winning the hearts of watch collectors with the rest of its selections this year, including the Black Bay GMT and the Black Bay Chrono. The Black Bay Pro is an easy-wearing 39 mm watch with a steel case and integrated steel bracelet, a hot combination that is right The same movement is used in the new Black Bay GMT S&G (steel and gold), which is aptly being nicknamed the “root beer” for its bi-colored brown and black bezel — a name given to another watch with that color scheme, the Rolex GMT-Master II. The color scheme looks great with the two-tone steel and gold bracelet and gold bezel edges, along with the matching numerals, indexes, hands, and crown. This is a good looking sports watch that is equally at home in the boardroom. The Black Bay Chrono S&G takes the yellow gold a step further to the dial, in a bold rendition of the iconic two-register chronograph, here with black subdials — a reverse dial variant of the Black Bay Chrono from 2019. The fixed bezel is yellow gold, surrounded by a black anodized aluminum insert with gold-plated markings. The crown and chronograph pushers are all yellow gold. It contains the Tudor caliber MT5813, a high- end integrated chronograph movement with a column wheel and vertical clutch with a power reserve of 70 hours. With 200-meter water- resistance, this watch is a pure substance-plus- style sports watch that, when you consider its accessible price, blows comparable luxury sports watch brands out of the market.

on trend at the moment. You can swap the bracelet for either a new rubber/fabric strap or a snazzy NATO-like fabric strap with a bright gold stripe that looks great next to the gold-color snowflake-shaped hour hand that indicates the second time zone along the bezel. The fixed steel 24-hour bezel is the index for the watch’s GMT function, via the caliber MT5652 movement, which has a

70-hour power reserve. The BB Pro is a true, all-around sports watch, with 200-meter water resistance. It is widely considered to be inspired by the Explorer model of its sister brand, Rolex, but the Black Bay Pro has its own character, which includes an accessible price and modern styling that is setting its own standard for a new generation of sports watches.

ONCE THE PURVIEW OF 1990’s FASHION WATCHES, COLOR HAS INFILTRATED THE PREVIOUSLY STAID, CONSERVATIVE LUXURY WATCH INDUSTRY! FROM NEON BLUES TO BRIGHT REDS AND VIBRANT GREENS, ON BOTH DIALS AND STRAPS, COLOR IS PUTTING THE STYLE BACK IN WRISTWEAR. FOR MEN Breitling Navitimer B01 Chronograph 41:

There have been many iterations of Breitling’s icon since its debut 70 years ago, but this new Navitimer captures its most classic features, while enhancing them with modern refinements. A flattened slide rule and a domed crystal create the illusion of a sleeker profile. Alternating polished and brushed metal elements give a lustrous, yet understated finish. Most notably, new colors in shades of blue, green and copper, define the updated dial options. Worn by astronauts in space and the biggest stars on earth, it is Breitling’s most iconic timepiece and one of the most recognizable watches of all time.

FOR LADIES There’s something for everyone in

Breitling’s new Superocean. Collectors will recognize the strong influence of the Slow Motion, water sports enthusiasts will appreciate its technical features, and the style conscious will gravitate towards its day-to-night, beach-to- boardroom versatility. Rolex Testimonee Jon Rahm celebrates holing the winning putt on the 72nd hole at the 121st U.S. Open.

R olex’s enduring relationship with the world of golf began more than 50 years ago when Arnold Palmer became the brand’s first golf Testimonee. He was quickly joined by Testimonees Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player. Together they became known as The Big Three, and they changed the face of golf forever. In 1967, Rolex gifted Jack Nicklaus with a yellow gold Rolex Day-Date, Reference 1803, and it became his go-to watch. The Day-

Date was the first waterproof, selfwinding wristwatch to feature a day display fully spelled out on the dial. Its tapered and faceted baton hour markers are reminiscent of golf tees, and its President bracelet is iconic. In 2019, after wearing his Day-Date during 12 of his record 18 professional major championship titles, Nicklaus sold the watch at a Phillips auction, donating the $1.22-million proceeds to the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation.

“It was the first watch I ever owned, and the only watch I wore for every professional tournament I’ve won throughout my career,” said Nicklaus. “It has accompanied me at U.S. Opens, The Masters tournaments, PGA Championships, The Open championships, and countless other events for over five decades, and has served me well at every step along the way.”

COMPANY CAUSES

T oday, we don’t just shop; we shop for products from companies we trust and admire — companies that align themselves with the heroes of today, that have a social conscience and an environmental action plan. If you want to get to know a watch brand, take a look at its affiliations — its sponsorships, partnerships, and programs. That way, when you buy a watch, you not only get something beautiful, you have a chance to support causes you believe in or athletes and sports that you admire. Here are a few of the connections between watch brands and causes.

WHAT DOES YOUR FAVORITE WATCH BRAND STAND FOR ?

ROLEX In addition to sponsoring elite sporting events such as Wimbledon Tennis, Daytona International Speedway racing, and US Open Golf, Rolex works on many levels to support environmental causes. The Rolex Perpetual Planet program is a three-pronged approach that includes a partnership with the National Geographic Society to study the impacts of climate change; support for biologist Sylvia Earle’s Mission Blue initiative to safeguard the oceans through a network of protected “hope spots;” and the Rolex Awards for Enterprise, which recognizes individuals whose projects advance knowledge that protects humans and the environment.

TUDOR Tudor, whose motto is “Born to Dare,” is a pure sports brand and is, therefore, associated with a number of top athletes, including soccer star David Beckham, surf champion Nic Von Rupp, and the All Blacks rugby team from New Zealand. The goal is to celebrate human endurance and to build a sports watch that is appropriately robust yet accessible.

Panerai Luminor Marina Carbotech™.

PANERAI Panerai has taken the eco-ambassador concept directly to its customers by attaching adventures to certain limited edition watches that often include interaction with ambassadors that promote ecology. Buyers of the

Submersible Mike Horn edition were invited to participate in an Arctic adventure to Svalbard, Norway, during the height of the Northern Lights spectacle. Horn is an explorer, survival expert, and environmentalist. Panerai has also gone the extra step of using recycled materials in its watches, including recycled steel for the cases and movement components and recycled Super-LumiNova.

BREITLING Breitling joins the action on the surfing side, as a supporter of Outerknown, a company owned by surf champion and Breitling ambassador Kelly Slater which makes sustainable clothing. Over 90 percent of Outerknown’s products are made from organic, recycled, or regenerated materials. Outerknown is surfer slang for the other, unseen side of a wave. Breitling also supports the Solar Impulse Foundation, which promotes products and processes that protect the environment. “Protecting the environment doesn’t have to be boring,” insists the program’s founder, Bertrand Piccard. “My goal is to change the narrative that assumes protecting the environment is boring, expensive, and sacrificial. I want to show that it can be exactly the opposite. It can be exciting, it can be profitable, it can create jobs and become the core of economic development.”
