W hen it comes to color, nothing shines as brilliantly as a fancy-colored diamond. Faceted diamonds reflect more light — called brilliance — than any other gem, because they are harder than any other gemstone. A colored diamond is like a neon light. The intense color is absolutely stunning. This year, they are showing up on red carpets, in engagement rings, and in very special pieces of fashion jewelry. Color in diamonds is a rare occurrence, which adds to their mystique. For every colored diamond found, there are at least 10,000 colorless ones. Pinks, blues, and greens are the rarest. Pinks are especially prized, sometimes commanding prices of up to $400,000 per carat — 20-times the price of equivalent white diamonds, due to rarity and market demand.
