ROMAN MYTH
STILL SHAPES
T There’s an old story about why the wedding ring lives on the left hand’s fourth finger, and it’s one of those legends too lovely to let go of. The Romans believed a vein ran straight from that finger to the heart, something they called the vena amoris , the vein of love. Slide a ring onto it, they thought, and you were wiring yourself, quite literally, to the person you loved. Modern anatomy says otherwise. There’s no hidden vein connecting that finger to the heart any more than the others. But the myth never faded. For over a thousand years, it has shaped how love gets sealed in the Western world: one ring, one finger, one imagined line to the heart. The ring finger has always been a kind of public secret, worn in plain sight yet somehow private. It’s also the only finger, in many cultures, reserved for nothing else. We don’t typically wear other jewelry there first. It’s kept open — waiting. EVERY PROPOSAL
