FROM OUR FAMILY TO YOURS
MARKING YOUR MOMENTS We consider it a high honor to celebrate life’s milestones with you.
Warmest personal greetings, To all our friends and clients, welcome to the holiday issue of Fredric Rubel Magazine. This is the 13th edition of our magazine that showcases all the beautiful jewelry and Rolex timepieces that we represent. Our vision for this magazine, from the very beginning, was to highlight the wonderful jewelry designers and companies with whom we are lucky enough to have partnered for all these years. You have told us how much you enjoy and are inspired by all the beautiful jewelry and timepieces we have featured in past issues.
Many of you have also mentioned that you love reading about the history of our company and learning more about our great team. In this issue we have a feature article about three exceptional team members that many of you have had the pleasure of getting to know. I hope that you will enjoy learning more about Olga, Chien, and Sarah and the kind caring individuals they are. Of course, if any of these three women have assisted you in the past, then you are already aware of how lucky we are to have them as part of our team. You will also learn more about Rolex and their
commitment to excellence in architecture and environmentally sustainable design. Many are aware of Rolex as a leader in fine watchmaking, but few know about their commitment to the environment, arts, and science. Please stop in and say hello this holiday season, we very much appreciate your trust and confidence in us and want to wish all of you a very happy, safe, and warm holiday season.
With gratitude, The Rubel Family

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT
BY CAROL BESLER
Fredric H. Rubel Jewelers is a family business in more ways than one. Beyond its principals, David and Gary Rubel, the family extends to employees and customers, the other two pillars of the triumvirate that keeps the business alive and well — and fun! Meet three of our special employees, who tell us how they got here, and why they stay. THE RUBEL FAMILY INCLUDES EMPLOYEES AND CUSTOMERS, TOO PRECIOUS GEMS A TRIO OF
“I’m a foodie, and sometimes customers who know me well come in with pastries or some other goodies for me,” says Chien Fen Huang, who has worked at Fredric H. Rubel for 23 years. “I have stayed here a long time because I think people here are friendly, and a lot of clients are very sweet.” Chien came to the U.S. from Taiwan to finish her degree in interior architecture. She also became interested in gemology, and ended up obtaining her graduate gemology degree the Gemological Institute of America and landing a job at Rubel in 1999. It was her first job, and she is still happy there more than two decades later. In addition to being a sales associate, she takes on many roles at the store: repairs, appraisals, inventory, even shipping. “I like working here because it’s family owned and the clients end up feeling like family too. It’s a long-term relationship.” What’s her favorite thing in the store? “The Rolexes,” she says. “Particularly the GMT-Master II. And, of course, the diamonds. I really love diamonds.”
12 FREDRIC H. RUBEL MAGAZINE
Olga Addis, who has worked at the store for 11 years, has completed the GIA graduate diamonds course and has a similar passion for diamonds and beautiful jewelry. “We all do much more than just sell,” she says, and that includes enjoying the atmosphere of the store and the comings and goings of customers. “I like meeting with new people and talking with and getting to know them,” she says. “I also enjoy helping customers to pick beautiful pieces for themselves or for a present to make someone feel very special.” She says the store has a great ambience, “It’s professional, friendly, and fun.” Some days are more fun than others: “My most memorable experience while working for Rubel was getting to meet jewelry designer Roberto Coin, during an event at Montage Resort.”
Sarah Lichtenberg, another devotee of the Italian master, worked for a year at the Roberto Coin boutique at Fashion Island before starting with Rubel in 2015. “The boutique was closing, and Rubel Jewelers was looking for someone, and they took a chance on me.” Also a GIA graduate gemologist, she had previously worked for a jewelry appraisal company, learning the ropes in that area of the business. Her favorite thing about working at Rubel is seeing the pleasure customers get from the beautiful pieces they choose. “It is always the best feeling when we are able to find the perfect piece of jewelry for someone or we get a watch to a customer that has been waiting. Seeing their faces light up is awesome!”

lovely lockets WEARABLE TREASURES, BEAUTIFUL ON THE OUTSIDE, PROTECTING PRECIOUS MOMENTS ON THE INSIDE.
Lockets by their very nature hold a special story, known only to the woman wearing it. At the same time, it has often been said of lockets that they are the perfect piece of jewelry to hold that special story close to one’s heart.
Lockets are eternally popular and can hold sentimental meaning with tiny photos tucked inside. Styles have evolved greatly in recent years and lockets now come in so many different designs. Some have smooth finishes and are adorned with interesting diamond patterns and gemstones, while others have more of a picture frame design with pivoting covers. Layering in a locket with other necklaces elevates your look by adding dimension and interest, not to mention the sentimental value of wearing photos of your loved ones day to day.

ROLEX DEBUTS 2022
R olex just keeps getting better and better. This year’s introductions include a new GMT-MASTER II with its crown in a novel position, a yellow gold YACHT-MASTER 42 (yellow gold watches are hot!), a redesigned OYSTER PERPETUAL AIR-KING , and a groovy floral DATEJUST 31 — four new models to lust after, destined to be future collector’s pieces.
The great novelty of the new GMT-MASTER II is the position of the crown and the cyclops date window on the left, with the crown facing toward the hand. Rolex lefty models are a rarity (as they are from most brands), and this one is exceptional. The green and black color combination is exclusive to this line, and it’s worth noting that two-tone Cerachrom itself is rare. Rolex introduced its proprietary ceramic formula in 2013, and it is only used on certain sports models. The watch has the model’s signature Cyclops lens magnified date window and the option of either a Jubilee or Oyster bracelet.
18 FREDRIC H. RUBEL MAGAZINE
The OYSTER PERPETUAL AIR-KING , Rolex’s tribute to explorers of the skies, has been updated this year. It’s still the same 40 mm size, with the satin brushed Oyster bracelet and EasyLink Oyster clasp, and it still has the beloved black dial with signature green lettering and seconds hand. The case, however, has been redesigned. Now it has straight sides — like the majority of the brand’s professional category watches — as well as a crown guard. The applied numerals are now filled with Chromalight, Rolex’s proprietary luminescent material, which makes the watch more legible. The hands and triangular hour marker at 12 o’clock, as well as the 3, 6, and 9 numerals, now have a longer-lasting intense glow, making them more visible in the dark. Another big difference is that now there is a 0 before the 5 on the minutes scale, so each five-minute interval is marked by two digits. The Air-King was originally launched in 1958.
The YACHT-MASTER 42 is special for many reasons, but there is something extra magical about the combination of black dial and yellow gold case found on the new model. It adds an infusion of classic elegance to this otherwise sporty line. The model is easily recognizable for its bidirectional rotatable 60-minute graduated bezel made entirely from precious metal or fitted with a Cerachrom insert in high-technology ceramic. The hour markers and hands are optimized with Chromalight, which makes them visible in the dark, and even in daylight, they have a brighter white hue. It contains the Rolex caliber 3235, and like all Rolex watches, it carries the Superlative Chronometer certification, which ensures excellent performance on the wrist. The Yacht- Master 42 is also available in white gold.
The dial of the new ROLEX DATEJUST 31 is decorated with a floral motif in a choice of azzuro blue (with a fluted bezel), olive green, or silver (with diamond bezels). Lovers of detail will note the combination of matte, sunray, and grained finishes on each flower, a subtle way of differentiating each one. Also, the center of each flower is set with a diamond. These dials are decorative enough to make them feminine and unique, yet not flashy or overly girly. As usual, Rolex gets the balance just right.

A great jewelry collection is one that has that extra spark of creativity, something that tells you it was created by a designer who sees the world through a special lens. When Roberto Coin looks at a glorious garden, he sees diamonds set in flower patterns. When he looks at great architecture, he sees a cuff bracelet in hand-finished gold. He is inspired by travel, culture, the oceans, the animal kingdom, and by the beautiful women who wear his jewelry. ROBERTO COIN JEWELRY INSPIRED BY THE BEAUTY THAT SURROUNDS US
This year, Roberto was inspired by the culture and climate of the Navarre region of northern Spain, a beautiful area dotted with vineyards and olive groves, charming villages, and Gothic cathedrals. The capital, Pamplona, is famous for its running of the bulls. The NAVARRA COLLECTION is classic yet modern, in the same way that Navarre is a mix of modern and ancient cultures. It is based on a distinctive pattern of intertwined solid links, interpreted as gorgeous gold bangles trimmed with diamonds or lariat-style necklaces with ruby-trimmed toggle clasps.
20 FREDRIC H. RUBEL MAGAZINE
The CIALOMA COLLECTION is inspired by a song of the same name, about the treasures of a life on the Mediterranean sea that surrounds Sicily and on the special magic of southern Italian culture. It’s a world of ropes hardened by salt water, ancient prophecies, moonlight, and paths charted by the stars. The gold in the Cialoma pieces is worked like a marine knot, woven so tight that it can never come undone. There is something magical in these knots, and the design is completely original in the world of fine jewelry. The black and white diamond highlights look like flashes of white lightening at night.

The DUCHESSA COLLECTION is where Roberto’s mastery of surface finishing on gold comes to the fore. The lush, large oval links are hand-finished with a textured sheen that causes them shimmer as you move. They are joined by horizontal links set with diamonds in a floral pattern that is definitely recognizable as a member of the Roberto Coin design aesthetic. The doorknocker earrings in the Duchessa collection are the showstopper of the season!

GOLD LINK CHAINS ARE THE MUST-HAVE- NOW FASHION STATEMENT FOR A BOLD LOOK.
CHAIN REACTION
W ith dopamine dressing on the rise (a term recently coined by fashion psychologist Dawnn Karen to describe the intention of dressing for a mood-boosting effect), one of the latest jewelry trends references the feel-good spirit of the ’90s: oversized gold chains. As more and more people are looking to dress up again, they’re looking for something
that’s familiar and nostalgic, while embracing a maximalist attitude that might even make a statement — and what better way than through larger-than-life gold links? We’re not even just talking necklaces (although there are definitely some chunky chokers on the market right now), this trend extends to bracelets, earrings, and beyond.

Whether translated through sheer volume or
layerable length, many designers are taking the bold link design a step further by incorporating
diamond embellishments (diamond Cuban chains, in particular, are having a moment) or pops of bright enamel. Essentially, it can be glammed up, pared down, or fall somewhere in the middle.
Great for both men and women, gold chains — even oversized — are really as versatile as jewelry gets, which also leaves plenty of room for personalization. Add a charm, medallion, or family heirloom to make it your own — whatever gives you that dopamine boost!

DAVID YURMAN AMERICA’S FIRST FAMILY OF JEWELRY
W hen David Yurman sculpted his first Cable bracelet with gold wire 40 years ago, he envisioned the twisted metal ropes that architect John Augustus Roebling used to suspend the Brooklyn Bridge. “That strength and simplicity grabbed me,” he once said. It’s a style Yurman also recognized in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s ancient gold torque necklaces and in DNA’s twisted structure, and even in nature’s hanging vines. Today the universal design is instantly recognizable as David Yurman’s signature. Over the past four decades, David and Sybil Yurman, the husband-and-wife team who established the brand in 1980, have leaned into the Cable motif and made it an iconic American design. It’s been reimagined in countless styles, from colorful, bold aluminum cuffs to elegant diamond engagement rings and luxurious diamond chain link necklaces. It’s the thread that defines and connects Yurman’s stylish, contemporary and classical ethos. “The Cable form is at the heart of everything we do — changing, adapting, and evolving, but always a constant,” says Evan Yurman, the founder’s 40-year-old son who was named president last year.

“THE CABLE FORM IS AT THE HEART OF EVERYTHING WE DO — CHANGING, ADAPTING, AND EVOLVING, BUT ALWAYS A CONSTANT.” — Evan Yurman, President, David Yurman
DAVID YURMAN’S NEXT GENERATION CABLE The newest evolution is Cable Edge, a wave-like pattern made in recycled silver and gold with conflict-free diamonds. The motif is based on a twisted rectangular form that echoes the undulating shapes found in modern architecture. “It’s clean, contemporary look and feel will appeal especially to people with an appreciation for art and sculpture,” says Evan. “It plays with light and angles to create an almost velvety sensation. It’s truly one of my favorite collections we have done.” Cable Edge is the company’s jewelry collection made exclusively with recycled metals and traceable diamonds, and more are in the works. By using metals that have previously been refined, the brand is reducing the demand for newly mined materials and the energy needed to process it. Cable Edge is an example of Evan’s influence on the business. Sustainability is a priority. He is also continuing his parents’ focus on infusing jewelry with a sense of timeless modernity and shares their love of architecture, art, and design. But don’t expect to see David and Sybil retire anytime soon. They still love coming into the office, designing and experimenting with new ideas, and
they remain committed to the brand they started when they were struggling artists. Growing up with a mother who paints and a father who sculpts, it’s no surprise that Evan showed an early interest in art and design. Over his two decades working in the family business, he launched men’s jewelry and bridal, high jewelry and most recently served as chief creative officer. “Having been around the business from an early age, I have great pride for our classic style and founding identity, and throughout my time working for the company, I have sought to honor those traditions of craft, product, and innovation, all the while embracing the natural evolution of David Yurman.” The close knit Yurman family all live near the company’s Tribeca headquarters, which makes it easy for Evan Yurman’s three daughters to visit. His eldest daughter Cody has already begun to tinker with jewelry. “She has her own bench in our design shop, where she has been experimenting with creating pieces,” he says. It looks like the third Yurman generation is already preparing to join the family business.

W hen you think of the South, perhaps you picture Southern charm and Southern hospitality. But the Old South has changed dramatically over the years and become more homogenized with the rest of the country. Atlanta is now a bustling metropolis, much like many East Coast cities. The same can be said for Nashville, Tennessee: Raleigh, North Carolina: and Columbia, South Carolina. However, there are pockets where time seems to have stood still — where a glass
of sweet tea served with a warm smile under massive Spanish moss-covered oak trees is still a common sight rather than the exception. When I first traveled to Ireland, I marveled at how the people, language, and culture mirrored the caricatures created by the TV shows and cartoons I had watched as a kid. Indeed, it is true that they sing and invite you into their pubs for a raucous good time, often inviting you to pull up a chair at their table. The Irish love Americans, and they
love to celebrate life on a daily basis. It is a magical place. I feel the same about historic Savannah, Georgia. The beauty of this small city will seduce you with its colonial-style architecture and rich history. It’s a place where you are made to feel at home and at peace. It’s a relaxed culture that has embraced its past and preserved what is comforting about the old South. The pace is slow. The people are welcoming and considerate of others. They love life in Savannah!

Historical River Street
THE DARK SIDE Savannah also has an edge. It is considered one of the most haunted cities in America. There are several ghost tours available that will confirm the dark side of this very pic- turesque city. Whether during the day, or a more appropriate nighttime walking tour, some must-see stops include the Sorrel Weed House, the old Savannah Theater, and Chip- pewa Square, where the famous bench scene from Forrest Gump was filmed. A short tour through the beautiful Bonaventure Cemetery, which was depicted in John Berendt’s Mid- night in the Garden of Good and Evil , certainly conveys the ancient years of decay and sad- ness of this place. MUST-SEE The quintessential Savannah moment can be found at the Wormsloe Historic Site, a for- mer plantation (Georgia’s oldest) established in the 1730s by Noble Jones, one of the first settlers to arrive from England. After driving through the huge gated entrance, the breath- taking enchantment of an avenue lined on ei- ther side by hundreds of trees — stately oaks covered in Spanish moss, creating a canopied
thoroughfare over a mile long — is a sight you will not soon forget. At the end of the avenue (which you can walk or drive) is a small mu- seum and visitors center that tells its history. CULINARY DELIGHTS People come from all around the country to experience the history of such a beautiful place. In so doing, they also discover the fa- mous Southern hospitality of the city’s fin- est dining establishments. Savannah cuisine and spirits are world-famous and extremely diverse. Sink your teeth into extra-crispy fried chicken, authentic shrimp and grits, finger-licking-good barbecue, and so much more. Stand-out eateries include The Grey, a restaurant housed in building that served as a Greyhound bus station from 1938 to 1964; The Atlantic, a repurposed space located in an old gas station; and Cotton & Rye located in a former bank, featuring a modern take on Southern cuisine. You may also dine in style in a beautifully restored 19th-century mansion at La Scala Ristorante, where the authentic Italian cuisine and impeccable wine selections are sure to satisfy any palate, or at Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room, established in 1943, a charming
stop where comfort food, never disappoints. Other top spots are Chart House Restaurant, Moss+Oak Savannah Eatery, Water Witch Tiki, Belford’s Savannah Seafood & Steaks, Flying Fish Bar & Grill, Pie Society, Sting Ray’s Seafood, Circa 1875, Driftaway Cafe, Husk Sa- vannah, St. Neo’s Brasserie, Bocci’s Italian Bistro, and Tubby’s Seafood River Street, and Shabazz Seafood Restaurant. Rooftop bars and restaurants are some of the best in the Low Country, as well as base- ment bars, distilleries, and European-inspired pubs. Savannah boasts some of the finest craft spirits (and not just the spooky ones). Visit Ghost Coast Distillery, where visitors can par- take in guided tours and tasty samples in their cocktail room.
The before, during, and after cocktail is an unwritten rule in Savannah. You can sip on the go in the Historic District (between River Street and Jones Street), thanks to Savannah’s open container law. If your beverage of choice is in an open, plastic to-go cup, containing no more than 16 ounces, you can be on your way to your next adventure. We’ll cheers to that!

PURE PENNY PREVILLE THE DESIGNER PUTS HER SIGNATURE SPIN ON WEARABLE CLASSICS
D esigner Penny Preville has a way of putting her own special signature on otherwise classic designs. Eternity bands, heirloom- style medallions, lariats, and confetti diamond necklaces all take leading roles in her 2022 collections. There are new pearl styles alongside classic gemstones, from elegant emeralds to pink and blue sapphires. All of them have Penny’s signature touch. Her strategy is to create feminine, elegant, and supremely wearable jewelry.
This year’s revisited classics include a selection of stunning riviera-style necklaces and bracelets, including some with baguette-cut diamonds and others with baguette-cut pendants, adding a touch of the Art Deco flair that is so close to Penny’s heart. Her more modern take on this style takes the form of a series of confetti-style chokers, in which diamonds in a variety of shapes and sizes are set in a free-form arrangement. The creative placement of diamonds adds a unique, contemporary kick to the traditional riviera silhouette. The Watercolor Confetti variations add a punch of femininity to the look, with soft pink, vibrant pink and purple sapphires. The Medallion collection embraces some of Penny’s favorite motifs, including sun, moon and stars, hearts and engraveable disks for a collection of everyday jewelry with distinctive symbolism. In another signature twist, Penny adds a hand-applied finish to the gold Antique Amulet collection, giving a vintage luster and feel to lariats, stackable rings, dainty drop earrings and gold bangles. Did someone say pearls and yellow gold? Penny works two of this year’s hottest trends
in jewelry into her Pearl Link collection, creating an updated twist on classic freshwater and baroque shaped pearls. And she made them transformable! the pearl links can be removed from the earrings, which can then be worn as small diamond huggies. And the link bracelets can be enhanced with clip-on pearl medallions, some with diamond moon, star, or heart overlays — another unmistakable Penny Preville touch!

Japanese architect Kengo Kuma designed Rolex’s new building in Dallas,
Two of Rolex’s most recent projects, one in Dallas and the other in Milan, showcase the key values underpinning the design and construction of all Rolex buildings, including a sustainable, environmentally sound approach. The seven- story Rolex building in Dallas, Texas, was designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma to include a series of planted terraces on every floor. The adventurous and environmentally sophisticated design, typical of Kuma’s work, uses natural light, space, and subtly modulated surfaces. The form and environmental qualities of the tower have set new benchmarks for architecture in the city. In New York City, Sir David Chipperfield is currently redesigning the Rolex North American headquarters, where he says he is “creating an exemplary building befitting the heritage and culture of the Rolex brand.” The stacked, jagged, 25-story tower was designed to qualify for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum certification, representing the highest level of sustainability and leadership. The 165,000-square-foot building will demonstrate the quality, precision, and excellence that are the hallmarks of the Rolex brand.
THE WATCHMAKER WITH A COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE IN ARCHITECTURE AND SUSTAINABILITY
R olex does more than make great watches. Over the decades it has made lasting contributions across the arts and culture, and architecture has been a large part of that endeavor. Rolex’s commitment has been demonstrated by not only supporting the architectural community at large but also in the construction of its own buildings. For more than 60 years, Rolex has commissioned buildings for its worldwide operations, designed according to sustainable principles by renowned architects who have made their marks on history.

The new Rolex Pavilion for the 16th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia.
Rolex also works to promote excellence and sustainable practices in the global field of architecture. Since 2014, the company has served as exclusive Partner and Official Timepiece of the International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia. The biennial gathering is the world’s premier forum for architectural ideas and debate. The Rolex Pavilion is set in the Giardini, the picturesque park on the eastern edge of Venice that has been the site of the Biennale since it started in 1895. Over the years, the Rolex Pavilion, with its facade shaped like the brand’s iconic fluted bezel, has been a major attraction of the exhibition and a space to showcase Rolex’s architectural works. The pavilion has featured work by participants in the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative, including works by Sir David Chipperfield and his protégé Simon Kretz, and Sir David Adjaye and his protégé Mariam Kamara. The program seeks out gifted young artists from all over the world and brings them together with artistic masters for a period of creative collaboration in a one-to-one mentoring relationship. Since 2002, the mentor and protégé pairs in architecture have exemplified Rolex’s mission to contribute to global culture and ensure the world’s artistic heritage is passed on to the next generation. The work of the two most recent pairings includes:
Sir David Chipperfield, Rolex Mentor in Architecture, with his Swiss protégé Simon Kretz.
In 2016-2017, British architect Sir David Chipperfield and his protégé young Swiss architect and urbanist Simon Kretz used an East London site as an example of how to help create cities that promote well-being through greater inclusiveness and innovative thinking. Their successful partnership resulted in a book: On Planning — A Thought Experiment . In 2018-2019, Sir David Adjaye and Mariam Kamara developed plans for a cultural center in Niamey, Niger. The goal is for the center to meet local needs and to both serve and dignify the communities, while using simple, affordable, local materials that are ecologically, climatically, and culturally appropriate. A L INK INTRODUCING: A dolph Link, son of an Austrian bench jeweler, came to New York City in 1900. After apprenticing for three years with contracted manufacturing jewelers of Van Cleef, Harry Winston, and Tiffany, in 1904 he formed his own company, ALink. His creations were the reflection of Viennese artistry and designs influenced by his experiences assimilating into the heart of his adopted country, America. Working with diamonds and platinum, he created necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and rings. Adolph worked to show the inherent beauty of earth’s most precious of minerals while using as little metal as possible, believing less is more. His first creations included a handmade, pulled-wire straight line diamond bracelet, joined later by a matching ring and earrings. He was ahead of his time. Seven decades later, these pieces had names: tennis bracelet, hoop earrings, and eternity wedding band.
“Our jewelry is an interpretation of the look, the beauty, and the spirit of a cosmopolitan lady of today and her desire to don some sparkle, both every day and on those special occasions,” says Jeffery Link, president of ALink. “For 114 years, ALink has strived to create jewelry which has the relevances, the style, and the grace of a city — jewelry which reflects the heritage of its roots and the excitement of the grandeur of New York City. We are metropolitan.”

MASCULINE STYLE
BY JILL NEWMAN
G rowing up with a mother who paints and a father who sculpts, it’s no surprise that Evan Yurman, son of David Yurman and newly appointed president of the family’s world-renowned jewelry house, showed an early interest in art and design. Over his two decades working in the family business, he launched men’s jewelry and bridal, high jewelry and most recently served as chief creative officer. “Having been around the business from an early age, I have great pride for our classic style and founding identity, and throughout my time working for the company, I have sought to honor those traditions of craft, product, and innovation, all the while embracing the natural evolution of David Yurman.” DAVID YURMAN FOR MEN

SAVING LIVES
WHETHER IT'S SNUGGLES OR PLAYTIME, ANYONE WHO’S ADOPTED A PET CAN ATTEST TO THE MANY BENEFITS OF RESCUE.
THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING First and foremost, adoption often saves more lives than just the adopted pet. Millions of cats and dogs end up in shelters every year in the United States alone. Adopting gives your new pet a loving home, and it also makes room for another cat or dog in the shelter or rescue. On a purely practical level, you’ll likely be getting a pet that has already been spayed/neutered and vaccinated. If an adult or senior dog is more suited to your lifestyle, they’ll likely be house-trained and will only need a training refresher to settle into their new routine. But the benefits go so much further. HEALTHIER LIVING Adopting a pet can offer numerous health benefits, whether psychological, physical, or emotional. Recent studies find animal-assisted interventions (AAI) with shelter pets can help humans better manage psychological distress, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Pet companionship can also make us feel less isolated and lonely. Physical activity with our pets, such as taking regular walks, makes us healthier overall. Studies show that pet owners are more physically active than non-pet owners and that pets can especially help older adults get the daily amount of exercise they need. The activity obviously benefits our adopted furry family members, as walks and games can help them feel more confident and less stressed while giving them physical and mental stimulation. Not as obvious may be the benefits to their human companions who join them on daily walks and playtime. It's good for your heart — in more ways than one! who who? saves

“THE GREATNESS OF A NATION AND ITS MORAL PROGRESS IS JUDGED BY THE WAY ITS ANIMALS ARE TREATED.”
MAHATMA GANDHI
FINDING A GOOD SHELTER A good rescue center will prepare a newly adopted dog or cat for their new home and take time to spot and solve any behavior problems. They will help you find the right match, ask you detailed questions, schedule a home visit, and may even help you train your dog. They may also schedule visits follow-up visits to ensure the pet is being looked after and thriving in their new home. If you’re looking for references, ask your veterinarian and any local animal charities. HOW TO CHOOSE? Adoptable pets — of all ages and sizes — have so much to offer. To make sure both you and your new pet can make the most of the bond you’re building choose a pet that is the right age and breed for you and your family. THE RIGHT BREED By understanding the breed makeup of the pet, you can learn all about: • What activity levels they need • What inherited health issues to watch for • Their behavior traits and nutritional needs • Their weight and size once fully grown • Mixed-breed dogs can make perfect companions!
THE REWARDS By choosing adoption, you get to save a life while finding a companion who provides endless and unconditional love. The positive effects animals have on most people are beyond words. They offer us moral support and a welcome soothing during life's hard times and a vibrant loving companion ready to help us enjoy the great times. Faithful regardless of circumstance, their affection transcends boundaries. A well-treated pet is always ready to share their love — the touch of a wet nose cuddling your face or the sound of a concerned whimper in commiseration when you are sad, the ready at a moment's notice to hop in your lap or the absolute glee at your return to the home. Some scientific studies show that animals may feel love in the same way people do — through a similar chemical process. When you hold an animal — your cat, dog, horse, or many other creatures of the animal kingdom, something magical happens. It releases many of the same hormones we experience when in love. Animals understand that you are unique to them and their bond is sincere and true. Don't be surprised if the one rescued is you.
CONSIDER ADOPTING RESPONSIBLY
It's probably no surprise that pet adoptions have been soaring worldwide over the past couple years, but it's reasonable to assume the spike in adoptions might also lead to a spike in surrenders as our lifestyles resume post shutdown. Some dogs can develop separation anxiety if owners experience a sudden change in lifestyle — for instance, returning to their workplace. There are several ways to reduce the risk of your dog developing separation anxiety: • Keep a consistent, predictable routine and spend some time apart • Use training and enrichment activities • Stay active • Keep an eye on the pet's anxiety and adapt your approach • Ask for advice and help

A TRADITION OF EXCEPTIONAL QUALITY AND ARTISTRY KWIAT DIAMONDS
T oday’s jewelry industry is often about family, with expertise and skills handed down across the generations. A perfect example of this inherited know-how exists in Kwiat. When Sam Kwiat founded the New York City company in 1907, he never imagined that his passion would take hold for generations Together with his son, David, they grew a small family shop into a diamond legacy. More than a century later, the Kwiat family remains at the helm, designing and crafting exquisite diamond jewelry. As the Kwiat reputation for quality and craftsmanship grew, it became the go-to source for the most brilliantly cut diamonds and diamond jewelry designs. Prominent jewelers such as Tiffany & Co. and the Paris-based Alexandre Reza began to call on their services. In 1926, Kwiat cut one of the largest diamonds of its time, the 126-carat Teardrop of Africa, for Harry Winston.

In the 1960s and ’70s, David Kwiat’s sons, Sheldon and Lowell, joined the family business, and in 2006, Lowell’s son, Greg, became CEO. Today, all three of Lowell’s sons — Greg, Russell, and Cory — are at the helm of Kwiat, continuing the family tradition of offering unique jewelry collections with diamonds cut to the world’s highest standards. The Kwiat Splendor collection, for example, is inspired by the company’s rich archives, which feature over a century of design.
The vintage-inspired pieces are a modern interpretation of Edwardian filigree techniques. The Argyle collection celebrates the beauty of colored gemstones, including green tsavorite, indigo tanzanite, red spinel, and more, all paired with diamonds. And Kwiat engagement rings, the brand’s most popular offering, are the perfect showcase for its exquisite proprietary cuts. Kwiat’s Tiara cuts are beautifully distinctive, and designed to look bigger and brighter than other diamonds.

Kwiat begins with the finest rough diamond crystals, and cuts them to maintain the widest possible diameter, making each stone appear larger than diamonds of comparable carat weight. The Kwiat Tiara cuts include ASHOKA, with its prism-like arrangement of 62 facets; Kwiat Cushion, an exceptionally brilliant cushion cut; Kwiat Round, a dazzling round diamond; and Fred Leighton Round, a modern update of the romantic old European cut. Because of their superior design — with precise angles and proportions, perfect symmetry and polish, and meticulous faceting placement — Tiara cuts appear whiter than their GIA color grade.
