TIME ZONE

BY CAROL BESLER

PATEK PHILIPPE O ne of the many strengths of Patek Philippe is its ability to balance its current catalog to appeal both to longtime collectors, who love the brand’s traditional complications, and more recent devotees, who like modern and casual styles. That diversity extends to creating collections for both male and female aficionados. This year, Patek has introduced something new for everyone.

modern and traditional

For lovers of high watchmaking, this year offers a new complication, the ref. 5224R Calatrava 24-Hour Display Travel Time. In an unusual reading of dual time zones, it charts both local and home time on a central 24-hour index, indicated by two separate hour hands. Conventional dual timers that clock home and local time show one on a 12-hour index and the other on a 24-hour scale. Patek has also opted for two 12-hour hands and a day/night indicator. Here, there is no need for a day/night alert, since all the hours are on the dial. The gold syringe-style hour and minute hands for local time are luminescent, while the second gold hour hand for home time is openworked. This is a new complication for the brand, as well as a new movement, with a patented system for correcting local time via the crown.

The sport/dress category gets a boost this year with the Calatrava ref. 6007G. It is the perfect casual dress watch; you can wear it with a suit, or with short sleeves. It’s exactly what the new modern collector is looking for. The embossed carbon pattern in the center dial gives it a modern graphic look, heightened by touches of color on the dials and straps: yellow (6007G-001), red (6007G- 010) or sky blue (6007G-011). The white-gold case houses an automatic movement with date and stop-seconds function.
