the scoop
The scuttlebutt is that the new version will be powered by a turbocharged four- cylinder engine and twin electric motors, yielding a combined output of around 600 horsepower. In the Next concept, that drivetrain was capable of running 0-62 mph in 3.0 seconds, with a top speed of 186 mph. With that kind of power, the i8 M will be competitive with hybrid rivals like the Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray and the Lexus LC 500h. The Vision M Next concept claimed an electric driving range of 62 miles. There isn’t much info on the EV capabilities of the i8 M, but be sure BMW’s engineers are working feverishly to find ways to eke out more range from each charge. Hopefully, BMW will address one common criticism from the first model: ingress and egress. Sure, it’s a ground- hugging hypercar with butterfly or front- hinged doors, but it was exceptionally hard to get into and out of, gracefully or otherwise. As a hypercar, storage and cargo capacity will likely remain limited, but a front trunk (or frunk) may provide additional luggage space.
