LUXURIOUS LINKS
Where to stay? The five-star Hotel Praia D’El Rey Marriott Golf & Beach Resort lies on Portugal’s picturesque west coast, an easy drive from the culturally recognized towns of Obidos and Peniche, a quaint fishing village. Just an hour’s drive from Lisbon, the resort hosts two of the leading courses in Portugal, the West Cliffs Golf Links and the Praia D’El Rey Golf Course. In the running for the most stunning golf course in Europe, Praia D’El Rey winds through pine forests and rolling dunes, with spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean and the distant Berlenga Islands.
Designed by noted American golf architect Cabell B. Robinson and inaugurated in June 1997, the course features 87 bunkers, generous greens, and abundant natural vegetation surrounding lush fairways, providing a complex golfing challenge. Oitavos Dunes blends seamlessly with nature, carved from the magnificent dunes beside the Atlantic Ocean. Book accommodations at one of the oceanfront resorts, boutique hotels, and modern lodgings in the area around the course. Obidos, a fortified medieval town, is home to the Royal Obidos Scenic Resort. Drop off non-golfers to enjoy the sights while you face off against a 6,400-meter course on undulating terrain. Pamper your entourage at the spa and fine restaurants across the resort. Sintra is the destination for Penha Longa, a beautiful course with great views located at the base of the Sintra hills. Spend the day in Sintra touring historical attractions such as the National Palace of Pena and the Castle of the Moors.
What’s the cost? Portugal remains relatively affordable compared to Europe’s more famous cities, such as Paris or London. Some Americans have complained that cart fees are on the high end, perhaps as an in- centive to walk rather than ride the course. What to Wear? Don’t be surprised to encounter cloudy weather when you get off the plane. It’s a tropical climate, with brief rain showers punctuating the warm and humid air. During the warmer months, book early tee times to beat the worst of the heat. Take the usual advice of dressing in layers to heart.
How to Get Around? Rental cars and hotel shuttles are the most common ways to get around Lisbon. A golf booking agency can help with transfers to and from courses. We can only encourage you to make Portugal your next destination for a family adventure. A golf trip there promises a respite from the familiar and an adventure into stunning natural beauty and engaging cultural destinations.
