Most pearls on the market today are cultured, grown in pearl farms with careful human guidance. Natural, unenhanced pearls, however, form entirely without intervention, making them both rare and highly coveted. As a result of their natural occurrence, many unenhanced pearls are formed as baroque pearls, or pearls that are non-round and irregular in shape. Because these pearls are seldom found in modern harvests, most strands available today are antiques, sought by collectors for their purity and unique structure. Their scarcity and untouched beauty make them some of the most desired varieties in the world.
