If they can put a man on the moon,
Today, when you walk into our s tore at 601 Main Street and look up i n the foyer, you’ll see e x actly that: a map of Cincinnati from 1896, the year Richter & Phillips was founded, the map featured on this cover. The idea began the way many of our ideas do — while sorting through the old catalogs and papers that pile up around the store like a museum of our own making. But, to our surprise, there were z ero maps from 1896. So we set out to search and discovered a local map collector who had e x actly what we needed. Though at first, he wasn’t interested. His maps were his passion, not r eally for sale. So, I took a shot and shared that it was for Richter & Phillips, and 1896 was the year o ur s tory began. As fate would have it, he had purchased his wife’s e ngagement ring from Rick at our store years before. It felt like one of those full-circle Cincinnati moments, and he agreed to let our friends at Robin Imaging scan the map, preserving it in stunning detail. Of course, just placing the map on the ceiling wasn’t enough. We imagined it in Richter blue, with metallic gold stars marking every place in the city we had and would call home. More than once, we were told it was too complicated, really difficult, maybe even impossible. But those phrases aren’t in our v ocabulary. So e verytime, my answer stayed the same: If they could put a man on the moon, we can put this map on our ceiling. Eventuallly, I decided to reach out to the ladies at Sign & Sealed because I had gotten the sense that they, too, loved to make remarkable things. And it was because of their talent that the “impossible” can be found cast across our ceiling. And n ow, the map is a reminder of what it m eans to be part of something that has endured, even as the world around it has changed. Its a reminder that our store is woven into Cincinnati itself, a part of its stories, its milestones, and memories. To us, this map symbolizes possibility and perseverance. And our hope i s that when you walk under it, you will reflect on how long we’ve been in this city and recognize that you are an important part of that story. May it welcome you with belonging, a community more than a century in the making, and know it is our greatest privilege to commemorate your life’s milestones and look forward to celebrating the n ew chapters yet to begin. We can put thIs map on our ceIlIng. CINCINNATI, 1896
