Seiko Presage is a collection of contemporary mechanical watches inspired by the unique aesthetics of Japan. The Presage Sharp-Edged Series combines a modern case design with dials featuring the asanoha , or hemp leaf, pattern used in Japanese fabrics since the Heian period, over a thousand years ago. Considered a symbol of health and vitality, the asanoha pattern has remained popular to this day. The artistry of ukiyo-e The dial colors of these three new creations are inspired by ukiyo-e , the art of woodblock printing that – through the work of Hokusai and many others – brought the people, landscapes and nature of Japan to the world’s attention during the Edo period (1603-1867). In the late 19th century, many artists, including the impressionists Claude Monet and Vincent Van Gogh, were inspired by ukiyo-e’s unique colors and composition. Through their work and the movement known as Japonisme , ukiyo-e came to epitomize the Japanese aesthetic. The Sharp Edged Series GMT Limited Edition’s dial and bezel are in the deep blue made famous in ukiyo-e images of Mt. Fuji in high summer. Two additional models with day, date and power reserve complications include a white dial version featuring the pristine snowy hue and texture of shironeri , or highly refined, unbleached silk and a dark dial creation with subdials in kurotobi , a reddish brown tinged with black to resemble the feathers of the black kite, a bird of prey.
SPB305 Two models with a new case design join the Sharp-Edged series in 2022. While the new design retains all the strength and angularity that gives the series its distinctive look, there is an additional facet with a mirror finish between the top and side surfaces that adds an updated sparkle to the watch. The elegance of the two new timepieces is further enhanced by the inward tapering of the case. $1,100
SPB307 The day of the week is shown on the sub-dial at 3 o’clock, the date at 6 o’clock and the power reserve at 9 o’clock. The case has a super-hard coating and is 10 bar water resistant. $1,100
