PERRYWINKLE’S MAKES TREASURES TO LAST A LIFETIME

T

here is a story behind the beautiful jewelry you see sparkling in the showcases at Perrywinkle’s. It begins at the source, with carefully selected gems from ethical sources, with the manufacturing of rough diamonds at its sister company in Mumbai, and with choosing gold, silver, and platinum suppliers that adhere to the highest environmental standards. The story continues in the Burlington, Vermont design studio where Perrywinkle’s jewelry is conceived, and then on to its atelier where it is brought to life using state-of-the-art technology and finishing methods. Every stage of the process is controlled by Perrywinkle’s owner Perry Sporn, whose goal is to deliver beautiful jewelry that is ethically and responsibly made to last a lifetime. Perrywinkle’s embraces Global Reporting Initiatives (GRI) and is aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). “We implement production methods that are both environmentally and socially responsible,” says Sporn. “Sustainable, people-first

practices are what’s best for our customers, our employees, and our planet.” The company’s manufacturing process is trusted by some of America’s leading fine jewelry retailers, who buy their jewelry from Perrywinkle’s. “We never stop trying to make our jewelry better, and that’s why other fine jewelry retailers want us to make their product,” says Sporn. “One important advantage is our in-house casting process. Our castings are fully dense and the metal is hardened. We don’t use any old-school technology, or made-by-hand models, because the precision is not as good. We use engineering software to design our product, and we have developed our own finishing process.” Part of that process is ensuring the utmost precision. “We build our own sieves to sort diamonds, so our measurements are precise to the 100th of a millimeter,” he says, adding, “Our factory is vertically integrated, with over 70 specialists.

your wardrobe? WHAT’S MISSING FROM JEWELRY STAPLES FOR EVERY WARDROBE. uilding a jewelry collection is a personal journey of discovery that can lead to an eclectic mix of treasures: the carefully sourced power necklace for the time you hosted a charity ball, a deeply cherished one-of-a-kind ring that belonged to your mother, or that pair of over-the-top tassel earrings that just graze your shoulder. Eventually, however, we all return to earth, to the pieces that carry us gently through our everyday lives with grace and elegance and remind us of the importance of the basics. These are the classics. Classic jewelry is so-called because it stands the test of time. It forms the basis of any jewelry wardrobe. Here are some foundational pieces that represent the must-haves of any jewelry wardrobe. B

WHITE DIAMONDS

Diamond classic jewelry symbolizes both clarity and purity, while effortlessly pulling together and unifying an ensemble. The pristine white of diamonds placed in an understated, clean setting defines a diamond classic. These staple items retain their popularity due to their versatility and elegance. Beyond engagement rings, diamond classic jewelry encompasses everything from tennis bracelets to solitaire earrings, rivière necklaces to eternity bands. Countless hours are spent to hand shape and polish each tiny facet in a diamond to unleash the beauty that lies within. Behind each diamond is a craftsman’s labor of love. Open settings allow for a flood of light, setting off each facet in a fiery display of brilliance. Behind each diamond is your own personal story of love, to be cherished and passed down for generations. From simple to bold, a diamond classic is the staple of every well-dressed woman.

PERFECT PEARLS

Pearls have a universal appeal that suits any occasion or level of formality. The variety of types, colors, sizes, and applications make them one of the most versatile gemstones available, easily applied to any jewelry trend or price point. Whether you love the organic look of baroques and freshwaters or the sleek perfection of top-quality Akoyas, there is a pearl for you. Whether you’re dressing up or down, there is a lustrous pearl creation for every event. The only thing you need to consider when choosing a piece for the occasion at hand is your own sense of personal style. There are no rules. There are no rules. Formal strands of fine pearls are not strictly for dressed-up outfits. Pair them with a biker jacket or a cool summer sundress.

WHAT IT TAKES TO MAKE THE

WORLD’S MOST RELIABLE

SPORTS WATCHES

AHISTORYOFROLEX ADVENTURE WATCHES AND THE MATERIALS THAT MAKE THEM GREAT

Rolex is the original action watch and has long been associated with adventure. Rolex watches have survived the most extreme conditions, from the highest summits to the deepest recesses of the ocean. Climb Mount Everest? Check. Submerge into the depths of the Mariana Trench? Check. The world of Rolex is a world that calls for robust watches — even fictional worlds have touted the watch — the original James Bond timepiece was a Rolex. Since it was founded in 1905, the company has filed over 500 patents. It is credited with inventing the world’s first waterproof wristwatch and the world’s first self-winding mechanism, the perpetual rotor. First came the water resistance. The Oyster Perpetual collection, with hermetically sealed cases, was built on the success of the original Oyster model, patented by Rolex and launched in 1926. As the maker of the world’s first waterproof wristwatch, Rolex played a pioneering role in the development of the modern timepiece. In 1927, it was worn by British swimmer Mercedes Gleitze during her historic swim across the English Channel. The swim lasted over 10 hours, and the watch remained in perfect working order. In 1931, Rolex invented and patented the world’s first self-winding mechanism with a Perpetual rotor, which is today at the heart of every modern automatic watch. The first expedition to fly over Everest, in 1933, was equipped with Rolex Oysters, and 20 years later, Sir John Hunt’s expedition, in which Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the summit of Mount Everest, was equipped with Oyster Perpetuals. In 1960, the experimental bathyscaphe, the Trieste, successfully descended into the Mariana Trench, the deepest known depression on the Earth’s surface. Emerging from 10,916 meters (37,800 feet), the bathyscaphe was in perfect working order — as was the Rolex Deep Sea Special experimental watch that had been attached to the outside during the historic dive.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE EXCLUSIVE MATERIALS THAT GO INTO A ROLEX WATCH: OYSTERSTEEL : This is 904L grade steel, a superalloy used in the aerospace and chemical industries, and that means it has the corrosion resistance and high polish of precious metals. It also has a high sheen, so it looks good for a long time. EVEROSE GOLD: To preserve the beauty of its pink gold watches, in 2005 Rolex created and patented a new alloy that it casts in its own foundry: Everose gold, which owes its unique color — a pink hue unlike any other — to its composition. PLATINUM: Rolex uses 950 platinum, an alloy consisting of 95 percent pure platinum generally combined with ruthenium. At Rolex, platinum is above all used for the Day-Date, the most prestigious watch in the Oyster collection. The practiced eye immediately recognizes a Day-Date or Daytona with an ice blue dial as a platinum model.

Day-Date 40 mm, in platinum.

ROLESOR: Rolesor is the story of the auspicious meeting of two materials on a single Rolex watch: the juxtaposition of gold and steel with their contrasting colors and radiance, in subtly balanced harmony. The name Rolesor was patented by Rolex in 1933, and has become one of the distinctive elements of the brand’s watches, a true Rolex signature. The bezel, winding crown, and center bracelet links are made of 18k yellow or Everose gold, and the middle case and the outer links of the bracelet are made of Oystersteel. CERACHROM: Developed and patented by Rolex, these components are made from particularly hard ceramics that are virtually impervious to scratches. Their colors are unaffected by ultraviolet rays. Thanks to its chemical composition, the high-tech ceramic cannot corrode. CHROMALIGHT: Rolex’s luminescent material, Chromalight is blue by night, bright white by day, providing high visibility in dark environments.

ROLEX’S EXCEPTIONAL BRACELETS INCLUDE:

JUBILEE BRACELET: The supple five-piece links on dressy watches and some sport watches, such as the GMT-Master II. It was originally designed for the Datejust in 1945.

OYSTER BRACELET: The larger, flat, three-piece links make for a simpler, sportier look. PRESIDENT BRACELET: The President uses semi-circular three-piece links, originally created in 1956 for the Day- Date. It is always made of carefully selected precious metals. OYSTERFLEX BRACELET: Made of a very soft, flexible elastomer with an internal cushion system that makes it extremely well fitting and comfortable. The bracelet is fitted over a metal blade made of a titanium and nickel alloy, achieving the strength of metal and the comfort of rubber.

GMT-Master II 40 mm, known as the “Pepsi” in Oystersteel with Jubilee bracelet.

ROLEX ICONIC MODELS TIMELINE:

1945: The Datejust, the first selfwinding wrist chronometer to indicate the date in a window on the dial. 1953: The Submariner, the first diver’s watch waterproof to a depth of 100 meters (330 feet). Its rotatable bezel allows divers to read their immersion time. 1953: The Oyster Perpetual Explorer was launched in 1953 to celebrate the victorious ascent of Mount Everest. 1955: The GMT-Master, with its famous two-color bezel. 1956: The Day-Date, with its now-iconic President bracelet. 1956: The Oyster Perpetual Milgauss was created to meet the demands of the scientific community. It remains capable of withstanding magnetic fields of up to 1,000 gauss. 1963: The Cosmograph Daytona quickly became the ultimate tool for endurance racing drivers.

Perrywinkle’s Dew Drop Sapphire Bezel Necklace, N3.

Today’s brides and grooms are anything but typical. From where and how they wed to what they wear, couples tying the knot are creating their own rules of engagement that reflect their unique personalities. Never before has there been such diversity in the wedding category. This creative environment has expanded ring options for couples who want to break with tradition. More brides are embracing color in gemstone and metal use, and incorporating fancy shapes that are reinventing classic styles. YOURS

THE DIAMOND SOLITAIRE: From the elevated, six-prong setting to the bezel-set beauty, the diamond solitaire remains the preferred engagement ring style. The classic round brilliant diamond dominates this category, but there is a growing preference for other shapes including oval, princess and pear shapes. These alternatives to rounds show more of the carat weight across the width of the diamond appearing larger per carat SIDE STONES: Why stop at one diamond? A drizzle of side stones will not only add extra sparkle to an engagement ring, but will visually enhance the size of the center stone. Pavé diamonds arranged in the shape of a delicate bow take the multi-diamond look a step further, adding character and femininity. THE GEMSTONE SOLITAIRE: Some brides prefer nontraditional engagement rings set with a colored gem as the center stone. Most colored gemstones are less expensive than diamonds on a per carat basis (there are exceptions), which means you can get a larger, better-quality stone for your budget. The most popular alternative gem is blue sapphire, which symbolizes love, loyalty and harmony. NATURAL COLORED DIAMONDS: Colored diamonds can be an affordable, unique alternative to colorless diamonds. The most readily available natural colored diamonds are champagne, cognac and yellow. At Perrywinkle’s, we pride ourselves in creating a stunning and unique look for every bride. Whether she’s looking for a traditional look or a vintage style with a modern twist, our artisans can design it all. With an in-house jewelry factory, we’re able to be hands-on in every step of the process, giving us more freedom, flexibility, and control over the quality of every engagement ring. Book an appointment with us today and let’s discover together a ring that’s uniquely yours.

Today’s food sources are higher in trans fats and toxins. Thanks to an increase in processed foods, such as refined wheat flours, vegetable oils, and fast-food chains, eye doctors see a steady increase in age- related macular degeneration (AMD). Eyes (ight) FUELYOUR

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO LOWER YOUR RISK OF AMD?

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, consuming foods that fuel your eyesight and eye health is a great place to start.

NUTRITION IS KEY It’s being discovered that eating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and less fat not only benefits your entire body, but it specifically helps fuel your eyesight. Indulging in a nutrient-rich diet also means avoiding common polyunsaturated fatty acids such as canola oil, corn oil, and margarine, and instead using olive oil, coconut oil, and butter. Maintaining healthy blood vessels and arteries that lead to and from your retinas is an essential part of preventing AMD—and you can start by incorporating some of these foods into your diet. “ CONSUMING FOODS RICH WITH LUTEIN AND ZEAXANTHIN, LIKE EGGS, LEAFY GREENS, BROCCOLI, PEAS, AND AVOCADOS, PROTECTS YOUR MACULA. THE MACULA PROVIDES US WITH THE ABILITY TO READ AND SEE IN GREAT DETAIL. ~DR. JEFFERY ZHEUTLIN, VITREO-RETINAL ASSOCIATES

FoodsforYourEyes GIVE YOURSELF COLORFUL CHOICES Even your medical doctor would agree: A colorful diet is a rich diet. Fruits and vegetables vary in color and nutrient value, so you can’t go wrong with your choices, but balance is key. To support your eyes with lutein and zeaxanthin, consume more spinach and kale. For vitamins A, C, and E, try carrots, oranges, red bell peppers, tomatoes, and avocados. Your diet doesn’t have to be boring, so go ahead and add some color so you can keep supporting your eyesight and eye health! OMEGA-3S & MINERALS Fatty acids and minerals are just as important for your diet. To reduce AMD risks, experts suggest you consume more cold-water fish, such as wild Alaskan salmon, halibut, trout, and tuna, while staying away from the Omega 6s that are often found in farm-raised fishing sources. Fatty acids are also essential for tear production and lubrication. If you need to increase your zinc and copper intake, try black-eyed peas, kidney beans, and lima beans.

These foods will help promote tear production and blood supply to your eyes, which is a vital part of reducing your risk for AMD. Remember: It’s all about fueling your eyes(ight).

A CELEBRATION OF TRUE LOVE, REGARDLESS OF SIZE

F

or engaged couples, 2020 has been a challenging year. Weddings dates suddenly shifted on the calendar, and honeymoons were put on hold, in some cases, for an entire year. While some couples chose to reschedule for 2021, others are taking advantage of the changing seasons and opting for smaller, more intimate ceremonies or microweddings. Vendors in the wedding industry are also noticing a shift to intimate ceremonies, including wedding filmmakers Garrette and Amber Baird. As owners of Eyenamics, the Bairds have created wedding videos for weddings of all sizes. Still, they expect the microweddings and minimonies to continue to gain popularity in the coming months for one specific reason: love. “We’re really digging the trend of microweddings, because I think people who do small, intimate weddings, really focus on the importance of the actual marriage and less on the frills of a wedding,” Amber says. “I love a big frilly wedding, but it seems like these small, intimate weddings are so special to the family and friends that are there.” Amber says that she’s also witnessed a spike in elopements, where couples choose to have a quiet, personal ceremony by themselves now, with the hopes of having a larger gathering and celebration later. The beauty of elopements is that couples can choose nearly any location or venue without spending a fortune for guests and can still be married on their original wedding dates.

INTIMATE

EVENTS

20 ] P E R R Y W I N K L E ’ S M A G A Z I N E

But, like almost everything associated with planning a wedding, these ceremonies, too, can come with their own set of challenges. “I feel like smaller weddings put a lot less stress on the bride,” Amber says. “But in some cases, it puts more stress on them because they have to cut guest lists,. It can be very daunting, when one aunt can come and others can’t. How do you choose your favorite aunt?” With a microwedding comes plenty of creativity. Some brides choose to wear lace or pearl studded masks, while others are providing individual monogrammed bottles of hand sanitizer for guests. Some have even moved their venues outdoors, away from enclosed spaces. 2020 has also been the year for more creative wedding bands and engagement rings. Couples have had more free time to enjoy the engagement ring-buying process together, resulting in more unique looks to match their unique relationships. Still, no matter the rings you choose, or how big your wedding will be, it’s important to remember it’s all about the celebration of your love.

THE RARE AND WONDERFUL WORLD OF FANCY COLORED DIAMONDS Diamonds are the hardest of all gemstones and, therefore, reflect light with a brilliance that outshines all other gemstones. Colored diamonds have emerged as a favorite gemstone because of this glow. And because they are so rare, they make a unique style statement when set in jewelry. N COLORFUL CLEARLY atural fancy intense-color diamonds are rare: for every colored diamond found, including fancy yellow, blue, and pink, there are at least 10,000 colorless ones. When the color is very intense, it is classified as a fancy colored diamond. For fancy colored diamonds, the deeper, purer, and more saturated colors are usually the rarest, most costly, and most desirable. Perrywinkle pink diamond double halo pendant, DPM1380.

HOW TO BUY A COLORED DIAMOND

Three of the most important factors impacting the price of a natural colored diamond are strength of color, rarity of color, and size. 1. Strength of color: The color intensity of a natural colored diamond can be graded as Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Intense, or Fancy Vivid, with Fancy Vivid constituting the highest grade. The stronger the intensity of a colored diamond, the higher the value will be. 2. Rarity of color: The rarity of a colored diamond will affect its price. The more common colors, such as gray, brown, and yellow, will generally have a lower cost than rarer colors, such as pink, blue, green, purple, and orange, which occur less frequently in nature. The rarest known and most expensive color of all is red. However, very high grades of color in a yellow diamond will make it more valuable than others. 3. Size: Colored diamonds very rarely come in large sizes. This makes them exponentially more expensive.

NEW LIFE WHEN (AND HOW) TO RESTYLE AN OLD ENGAGEMENT RING —NEW STYLE

Perrywinkle’s Diamond Round Necklace, DPCTF0057.

Diamonds are forever, but sometimes women want to change their setting. If you have unworn jewelry, whatever the reason, you should never waste a perfectly good diamond! The best way to make that diamond sparkle again? Let our experts reset it into a new piece of jewelry that will bring you years of wearing pleasure! Like diamonds, unique as snowflakes, every woman’s story is different. Some women get married and wear their original ring their whole lives. Other women choose to upgrade or change their ring for a special anniversary. Maybe a number of years have gone by and the styling of the engagement ring is no longer fashionable. Or, maybe the engagement ring has been inherited from a friend or family member, and its style or size doesn’t quite suit the new owner. Generally speaking, the easiest solution is to reset the stone into another ring. You might like to keep a similar style in the ring but change the metal or upgrade the setting. Or maybe it’s the setting that needs upgrading. Setting a diamond into a halo, a sparkling frame of surrounding diamonds, will make the center stone appear larger and raise its sparkle quotient. Perhaps turning a solitaire into a three-stone ring

LIKE DIAMONDS...EVERY WOMAN’S STORY IS DIFFERENT.

is the answer: instead of using tiny diamonds to upgrade the ring, consider adding two side diamonds in a complementary shape, such as trillions, half moons, or baguettes. Or, go for a non-traditional look and set the diamond in a band with other smaller stones to create an anniversary ring.

IF YOU ALREADY HAVE ENOUGH RINGS TO COVER YOUR FINGERS, THERE ARE OTHER OPTIONS. Why not remove the stone and turn it into a diamond slide or pendant? Any size or shape of diamond can work for this option, from classic rounds, ovals, and pears to fancier marquises, princess cuts, and hearts. The diamond can be highlighted in a simple gold or platinum setting or it can be framed in pavé diamonds or colored gemstones. The same artisans who create the beautiful jewelry that fills the showcases at Perrywinkle’s can create your own special restyle piece Our master designers can remove a stone from its setting, create a stylish bezel around it, and add a hidden bail at the back so it can be worn on a favorite chain. If the old setting was yellow gold and you prefer white gold or platinum, the metal can be easily changed to suit your jewelry wardrobe. By designing a complementary setting that enhances the cut of the diamond and accenting it with pave, our jewelers can turn that unworn ring into a stunning new design that will add new options to your jewelry wardrobe. Choose the style that matches your personal taste: romantic filigree and engraving inspired by Victorian times; clean-lined Art Deco looks with geometric lines; or modern freeforms with asymmetrical elements.

Finally, to create a piece of jewelry that is totally unique, consider resetting your unworn diamond into a one-of-a-kind pin or brooch. Picture a perfect golden leaf — maple, oak or gingko — dotted with a single diamond raindrop. Or choose a whimsical, nature-inspired design, such as a seahorse with a diamond eye or a butterfly with a diamond head. Don’t allow a gemstone as desirable and wearable as a diamond to go unused! Bring your unworn diamond to one of our design experts, add your inspiration, and help us turn it into a lasting treasure. MYTH BUSTING Nothing compares to popping a cork and smelling that sweet aroma of a freshly opened bottle of wine. Once seen as a luxury afforded only to special occasions, wine is now enjoyed universally. Still, that hasn’t stopped wine myths from traveling down through the generations of passionate wine drinkers. We’ve heard all the myths — everything from how to drink your wine to storing your wine — but if there’s one thing we know, it’s you shouldn’t believe everything you hear. VINO EDITION

MYTH: RED WINE IS BEST WITH RED MEAT Although the red meat protein can soothe a savagely tannic red wine, there’s no rule against drinking white wine. Indeed, red wine has long been seen as the standard beverage for a steak dinner, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find a complimentary white. In fact, the creaminess of chardonnay is refreshing with a juicy grilled sirloin. MYTH: SERVING WINE AT ROOM TEMPERATURE When wine rules were born, room temperature in European wine cellars meant 62-66 degrees Fahrenheit. Now, those room temperature falls in the low-to-mid- 70s range, and even higher in the south. Wine aroma and flavor change radically at different temperatures, and too much heat kills off a wine’s subtleties and exciting characteristics. To demonstrate, try chilling a bottle of red wine for several hours. Taste it right after opening, then again, every 10 minutes. As it warms up, different flavors will emerge. This test is also pretty remarkable with white wines, which are often served over chilled in restaurants. MYTH: ALL RED WINES CAN AGE It might be startling to know that 90-95% of all wines are meant to be consumed within the first two years after bottling. For the most part, the only age-worthy wines are cabernet sauvignon, syrah or Grenache-based wines, sturdy pinot noirs, some barrel-aged chardonnays, and dessert wines. Aging tames tannins and acidity and allows the natural fruit to come forward, which takes your taste buds on a wild ride. MYTH: RESERVE WINES ARE BETTER THAN REGULAR WINE In California, the word reserve gets thrown around a lot, but there’s no official definition. This loosely referenced term is often found on labels of bottles, affecting the price for no particular quality reason. Although some wineries use it legitimately for their better bottlings, you should still be wary of the term because there is no official regulation.

MYTH: SINGLE VINEYARD WINES ARE BETTER THAN OTHER WINES Single-vineyard wines (those that feature the vineyard’s name on the label) may be trendy, but they don’t guarantee quality. These wines express the character of an individual vineyard — good or bad. Blending wines made from the fruit of multiple vineyards can improve a wine by balancing out its flavors, acidity levels, and more.

MYTH: RINSING YOUR GLASS AT WINE TASTINGS IS A GOOD THING As a common practice and myth passed down through the

generations, there’s no need to rinse your glass. This exercise can have the opposite effect — watering down the flavor of the next wine. There is, however, one situation where you’d want to rinse: if you’re changing from red to white wine because the red will discolor and change the flavor profile of the delicate white.

MYTH: OPENING THE BOTTLE LETS THE WINE BREATHE

Oxygen exposure can help tannic reds mellow out, but only if you pour the wine into a glass or decanter. Simply pulling the cork isn’t going do the trick since the space between the bottleneck and the wine is too small to give the wine enough air contact. Fruity reds and most whites don’t usually need to breathe. TRUEBLUE

udor has surged in popularity since it returned to the U.S. market in 2013, with vintage pieces in demand and new models that appeal to avid collectors. The latest is a long-awaited all-blue version of Tudor’s highly sought-after Black Bay Fifty-Eight. The BB58, as enthusiasts call it, is so-named because Tudor’s first dive watches debuted in 1958. Although models in the modern collection, which launched in 2018, have black dials, this new offering is inspired specifically by a series with blue dials, introduced in 1969. At that time, Tudor was making professional dive watches for the Marine Nationale — the French Navy — built to true military-issue standards. Like the original black-dialed BB58, the new blue version has a 39 mm steel case, an authentic size if you want to stay true to the vintage style. Watches made in the 1950s were smaller than the typical 42 mm+ sizes of more recent times and constitute a growing preference of the moment. The domed crystal is another pure vintage touch. THE LONG-AWAITED ALL-BLUE VERSION OF TUDOR’S HIGHLY SOUGHT-AFTER BLACK BAY FIFTY-EIGHT

The snowflake hands have been a feature of Tudor diver’s watches since 1969. They were designed that way for high readability, and today that feature is enhanced even more by the application of Super-LumiNova to the hands and the applied markers, making them glow underwater or in other dark conditions. The watch is water-resistant to 200 meters (660 feet). The BB58 Navy Blue contains the in-house automatic MT5402 movement, with a silicon balance spring and an adjustable balance. It is COSC certified, which means it is an official chronometer, accurate to within -2 and +4 seconds per day. With a 70-hour power reserve, the BB58 is weekend proof: you can take it off on Friday and put it back on your wrist on Monday without having to wind and reset it. The strap selection is appropriately sporty. It’s available on a blue jacquard fabric strap, a blue synthetic soft touch strap that hugs the wrist like a soft flannel sheet, or on the brand’s iconic riveted steel bracelet. The bezel cover, made of anodized aluminum, is also blue. Tudor is now offering a five-year guarantee on all its watches sold after January 1, 2020, a guarantee that does not require the watch to be registered and is transferable. All Tudor products bought between July 1, 2018, and December 31, 2019,
can get an 18-month extension to their guarantee.

9 Benefits of Practicing Yoga

eventually lead to stiffness, pain, and immobility. Yoga is the perfect discipline for increasing your flexibility, thus preventing any negative conditions and promoting a greater range of motion. athletes, and supermodels)? They all swear by yoga. And their physical appearance and mental aptitude enthusiastically scream the benefits associated with practicing yoga. But are you aware of the benefits? Do you know why these celebrities (and countless others) swear by it? Or why over 15 million Americans (both male and female) practice yoga each year? Contrary to popular belief, yoga is not just a bunch of stretching and breathing exercises. Nor is it too easy or too “girly.” It’s a legitimate workout - one that intensely works out both the body and mind. It’s a kickass discipline that boasts seemingly endless benefits. And below, you’ll find just a few of the most powerful ones, broken down into two categories: physical and mental.

Mental Benefits of Yoga

Reduces Anxiety and Depression — There are several ways that yoga has been linked to reduced anxiety levels and depression prevention. The exercises themselves help reduce stress levels in the body, and the socialization and meditation aspects of yoga have effectively aided in lessening the impact of depression. Improves Concentration — For thousands of years yoga has been practiced to quiet the inner self, slowing down a person’s thoughts while decreasing their mental clutter. Just one session can allow a person to be more focused and less distracted throughout the day. Improves Self-Discipline — The very act of sticking to a regular yoga routine naturally increases self-discipline. However, the process of practicing each pose, stance, and breathing exercise also requires an immense amount of self-discipline and mental stamina. Improves Mind-Body Connection — Yoga involves synchronizing your breathing with your movements. As such, it fosters a union between the mental (focusing on breathing in unison) and the physical (focusing on moving in unison).

Physical Benefits of Yoga

Increased Strength — Several variations of yoga and their respective poses require you to support your bodyweight in very unique angles and positions. And this support must sometimes last for several minutes. This necessary support naturally strengthens your muscle groups, along with your core. Fat Loss — Yoga is very efficient at burning calories. One session of Vinyasa yoga can burn up to 594 calories, while a basic beginner yoga session can burn anywhere from 100 - 400 calories. Muscle Tone — A by-product of increasing your strength and burning fat, toned muscles give you that attractive physical appearance we all secretly want. Add to that the long, smooth muscle definition and you have the ingredients for a body to drool over.

Increased Flexibility — As you get older, your body naturally starts to tighten up. If nothing’s done about it, it will

GIVING BACK DOI G GOOD FEELS GOOD Doing good and giving back to your community not only gets you plugged in to what’s happening around you, but it can also help change a life. It seems like people from all walks of life could use a helping hand in today’s world. As part of the community, Perrywinkle’s Fine Jewelers is always looking for new opportunities to give back, and you can, too.

Select a cause Giving back to your community is one of the best ways to feel more fulfilled and help others in need. Getting the most out of your community work involves doing your homework and finding a cause you feel passionate about. If you aren’t sure where to start, consider volunteering locally. Here in Burlington, home to our flagship store, people are often encouraged to volunteer their time at the library—hosting reading sessions for kids and helping organize books. If being

surrounded by books isn’t your thing, you can research your local community center and find out where your neighbors need help the most. No matter what you decide, make sure it’s a cause that lights a fire in your soul. You never know who you’ll meet or the lives you’ll touch by getting out there and being part of your community for a few hours every month.

Make Donations Giving an organization or someone you know financial assistance is a significant blessing and shouldn’t be something you take lightly. Yet, if you’re unsure where to start, what causes to give to, or where to find resources, you can check out your local food and homeless shelters. They are always in need of supplies that require financial support. If you want to support fundraisers, the easiest place to look is GoFundMe, especially for those struggling because of all the challenges this year has brought. Also, consider keeping your shopping local and supporting local businesses. Many of our area restaurants, shops, and service-based businesses could use the boost. Plus, the customer service is more personable, and you know exactly where your money is going. Give Creatively Giving back to your community doesn’t always involve monetary donations. Instead, look for ways to donate things around your home. Perhaps you want to go through your closet and get rid of unused clothes. Or maybe you want to donate an older computer or laptop you don’t use anymore. Find an organization or business near you that is donating them to employees and students working from home. Have a particular skill? You can donate your time. If you know how to sew, consider making personalized masks for your neighbors. If you know how to design a website, think about a local business

struggling and reach out. You can even host an online fitness class for your local nursing homes, providing these individuals with much- needed activity and exercise. Encourage Social Responsibility at the Office Corporations have a social responsibility, you can help your employer or company meet those obligations in many ways. You might start small and stay small, identifying with the “think globally, work locally” mindset. Perhaps you agree to get a group of coworkers together to help clean up on Earth Day or hold a department bake sale to sponsor a Special Olympian. Such efforts can be a one-time deal or ongoing, depending on your company’s objectives. As the holiday’s approach, you can volunteer to spearhead a toy and clothing drive within your company. This is the perfect chance for you to feel like you’re giving back to your community while bringing others along with you. Who knows—maybe your passion and drive are exactly what your business or company needs to kick-start their community efforts in giving back. Impact The reasons people volunteer will be different for each person. What we do know is that when you find the type of volunteering that suits you, you’ll enrich the lives of those you help and your life will be made better by the whole experience. Good luck on your journey and let us know how your volunteering goes. Happy giving back!
