David Yurman creates jewelry that becomes a man’s signature piece. Take the classic signet ring, which the company offers in a range of styles, from modern minimalist gold rings to bold carved scarab designs. There’s a Yurman signet ring that speaks to every man’s personal style.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Evan Yurman, president of the family business, puts his own contemporary spin on classic jewelry pieces. His interest in art, architecture, and antiquities inform his distinctive designs: ancient coins and stone carvings inspired the Petrvs collection featuring carved horses and lions on rings and medallions; early prayer beads led to the symbolic Spiritual Bead bracelets and necklaces; and Japanese wood block prints and Samurai swords were the impetus for the artistic Wave motif pendants and rings. Working in the company’s Tribeca design studio, the 41-year-
old is continually tinkering with unconventional materials, such as titanium, carbon, and meteorite, to forge innovative and masculine jewelry with a cool factor. Yurman’s newest designs deliver his signature strong and refined aesthetic with talismanic symbols. The Duality collection plays with the idea of opposing forces combined to create harmony and balance. An example is a two-sided gold disc set in rings and medallions with a hand- carved tree of life on one side and a skull on the reverse.
The company has elevated the bead bracelet with sleek matte black onyx beads interspersed with carved matte gold beads or pavé diamond beads. There’s also ultra-luxe limited-edition faceted black diamond bead bracelets and necklaces and rare jade bead styles. T he Air-King symbolizes the privileged relationship between Rolex and flying during the golden age of aviation in the 1930s. It pays tribute to the pilots of the era and the Oyster’s role in their epic story. The 1930s was a period of spectacular progress in aircraft performance and led to the introduction of long- distance flights. Several pilots set records while wearing an Oyster. Others used a Rolex watch as an on-board chronometer, such as Owen Cathcart-Jones and Ken Waller, who, in 1934, made a return voyage from London (United Kingdom) to Melbourne (Australia) in record time with a twin-engine De Havilland Comet. UNIQUE AESTHETICS The current Air-King sports a distinctive black dial with a combination of large 3, 6, and 9 numerals marking the hours and a prominent minutes scale for optimal navigational time readings. Rolex’s symbolic crown is displayed in yellow on the dial, while the seconds hand and the name “Rolex” are green, echoing the brand’s emblematic color. Since the watch was launched in 1958, the inscription “Air- King” has featured in lettering that makes the model easily identifiable. From 2022, the Air-King’s 40 mm case includes a crown guard and has straight sides like the majority of Professional category models. The watch’s display has also been refreshed and is perfectly balanced thanks to the addition of a “0” before the “5” on the minutes scale. Each five-minute interval is, therefore, now marked by two digits. The 3, 6, and 9 numerals are also now visible in the dark thanks to the luminescent material of the Chromalight display.

RELIABILITY AND PERFORMANCE A paragon of robustness and reliability, the Air-King’s Oyster case is guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100 meters (330 feet). The middle case is crafted from a solid block of Oystersteel, a particularly corrosion-resistant alloy. The Air-King is fitted on a three-piece link Oyster bracelet in Oystersteel. This bracelet is equipped with an Oysterlock safety clasp, designed and patented by Rolex, which prevents accidental opening. It is also fitted with the Easylink comfort extension link, which allows the wearer to adjust the bracelet length easily, by approximately 5 mm. Powering the Air-King is calibre 3230, a self-winding mechanical movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. It offers outstanding performance in terms of precision, power reserve, resistance to shocks, convenience, and reliability. This movement is fitted with the exclusive blue Parachrom hairspring and also incorporates the patented
Chronergy escapement. Its power reserve extends to approximately 70 hours.
SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER CERTIFICATION Like all Rolex watches, the Air-King is covered by the Superlative Chronometer certification. This designation testifies that every watch leaving the brand’s workshops has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories, according to its own criteria. The Superlative Chronometer status is symbolized by the green seal that comes with every Rolex watch and is coupled with an international five-year guarantee.

L adies and gents dressing in their spring best are as traditional as mint juleps and red roses. Everyone prays for beautiful weather on the first Saturday in May so they can don their Derby ensemble — An outfit months in the making! Since the first race in 1875, fascinators and hats have been a part of the Derby experience, and attending without a hat on race day isn’t just a fashion faux pas, it’s considered downright indecent. Originally marketed as an extravagant event for high-class men and women, the Kentucky Derby is the state’s finest daytime soiree. Everyone comes dressed to the nines in colorful attire and ostentatious headdress — and this May’s fashion will not disappoint. “This year for the Kentucky Derby, we are getting a lot of requests for neon colors,” said Christine Moore of Christine A. Moore Millinery. We refer to these shades as ‘look at me colors,’ which, for an event like the Kentucky Derby — where it is all about being seen — is a fabulous choice!”
Take a look around, and you’re also likely to find ladies wearing hats with sleek bow trims or even more floral prints. With the Derby on the same day as the Coronation, stylists like Moore are also prepared for more sleek and minimalist fascinators. And, as always, we can expect to find the gentleman adorning decorative top hats and fedoras. Part Southern tradition, part fashion runway, spectators don’t attend the Kentucky Derby just for the majestic thundering of hooves — they come for the fascinating fascinators.

On April 29, 2022, Kentucky Derby Museum hosted its 35th Annual Gala with Davis Jewelers and David Yurman as sponsors of the event. The evening featured cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in The Mansion at Churchill Downs, followed by a seated dinner and dancing at Kentucky Derby Museum with a live raffle of $10,000 in jewelry, donated by David Yurman.
