THE ROMANTIC, TWISTED, COLORFUL DESIGNS OF ITALIAN MASTER ROBERTO COIN
R oberto Coin, the maestro of Italian jewelry design, has a way of putting a new twist on his most beloved collections, with hundreds of new designs every year that complement and build on previous favorites. This year, he adds a literal twist to his Love in Verona collection, with new pieces incorporating a twisted gold motif — perhaps reflecting the twisted fate of the Verona lovers, Romeo and Juliet, who inspired the collection. Roberto has added diamonds to some of the pieces, either in the form of pavé on rings and bangles or lined up riviera-style on classic line or Y necklaces. In some pieces, diamonds form the petals of the signature four- petal flower motif.
The rectangular elements of Roberto’s Domino collection were inspired by the pieces used in the Chinese game of the same name, with repeated elements that symbolically trigger the domino effect. Gold and diamonds certainly elevate the game, making every wearer a winner!
10 LENOX JEWELERS MAGAZINE
The Cialoma collection is also inspired by tragic romance. The name comes from an old Sicilian ballad about a sailor who is torn between his love for a woman and his love of the sea. The collection has a nautical theme, with a sailor’s knot motif running through it. New pieces include open links and open-style cuffs and rings, which can be worn with flattened knots facing in or out. Of course, there are plenty of diamond accents, because what’s a love story without diamonds?
The Duchessa collection is all about traditional Italian craftsmanship and design, with spectacular doorknocker earrings, satin-finished, or pavé-adorned gold pieces this year. New in the Navarra collection, inspired by the Navarra region of Spain, are newly styled Y necklaces, flat open linked bangles and, as in the rest of Roberto’s collections this year, plenty of diamond accents. Look for random dangling chains and diamonds placed in surprising places!

JAPANESE DELICACY
SUSHI SENSATIONS A CULINARY JOURNEY INTO JAPAN’S IRRESISTIBLE DELICACY!
A re you ready to embark on a delightful adventure through the tantalizing world of sushi? This iconic Japanese cuisine has captured the hearts and taste buds of food enthusiasts worldwide. With its unique blend of flavors, textures, and artistry, sushi has become more than just a meal — it’s a sensorial experience that leaves a lasting impression.
Our journey begins centuries ago in the coastal regions of Japan. Sushi’s roots can be traced back to a simple method of preserving fish by packing it in rice, allowing fermentation to take place. Over time, this preservation technique evolved and the fermented rice was discarded, leading to the birth of the modern sushi we know and love today.
One of the aspects that makes sushi a versatile culinary delight is the choice between raw and cooked options. If you’re unsure about raw fish, don’t worry, there are plenty of cooked alternatives that offer equally gratifying taste experiences. But if you’re feeling adventurous, give raw fish a chance! Behind every incredible sushi dish is a master sushi chef, or itamae, who has devoted years to honing their craft. An itamae takes great care in selecting the freshest fish to ensure it’s safe and delicious to eat. Start with milder options like salmon or tuna and you might discover a whole new world of flavors!

NIGIRI, MAKI, AND BEYOND: UNRAVELING THE SUSHI VARIETIES Sushi comes in a delightful array of forms, each offering a distinct experience. Nigiri sushi, the most classic variety, consists of a small ball of vinegared rice topped with a slice of fish or other delectable ingredients. Maki rolls, on the other hand, are rice and fillings wrapped in seaweed and cut into bite-sized pieces — a playful way to enjoy sushi with endless creative combinations. For the purists seeking unadulterated seafood pleasure, sashimi is the way to go. No rice, just pristine slices of raw fish, allowing the natural flavors to shine. Remember, sashimi is best enjoyed when dipped lightly into soy sauce with a touch of wasabi, allowing the natural flavors to take center stage. BEYOND TRADITION: FUSION SUSHI AND UNIQUE CREATIONS Innovative chefs around the world have embraced sushi as a canvas for culinary experimentation. The rise of fusion sushi has brought exciting blends of flavors and cultural influences to the table. Imagine a spicy tuna roll with a hint of Mexican flair, or a decadent dessert sushi, featuring sweet fillings and drizzled with chocolate. These daring creations challenge tradition while celebrating the essence of sushi — a delightful celebration of taste and imagination. SAKE SYMBIOSIS: THE PERFECT SUSHI PAIRING No sushi feast is complete without a perfect beverage companion. Enter sake, Japan’s iconic rice wine. With its smooth and subtle flavors, sake complements the delicate nuances of sushi like no other. From dry and crisp options to aromatic and fruity varieties, sake adds an extra layer of joy to your culinary journey. So, don’t forget to raise your glass and say “Kanpai!” (cheers) before diving into your sushi indulgence. SUSHI SENSATIONS GO VEGAN For our plant-based foodies, worry not — sushi has embraced the vegan movement too! Vegan sushi options are flourishing, with creative fillings like avocado, cucumber, mango, and tempura sweet potato. These colorful and flavorful rolls are a testament to the ever- evolving nature of sushi, embracing inclusivity and appealing to a diverse audience. Sushi isn’t just a meal; it’s an orchestra of flavors and textures, a celebration of tradition and innovation, and a journey into the heart of Japan’s rich culinary heritage. So whether you’re a seasoned sushi connoisseur or a first-time adventurer, the sushi sensations await! Kanpai to sushi adventures!
SUSHI ETIQUETTE: UNWRITTEN RULES OF THE SUSHI BAR Before you embark on your sushi adventure, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with some unwritten rules of sushi etiquette. For instance, did you know that it’s customary to eat nigiri with your fingers instead of chopsticks? Or that dunking your sushi rice-side down into soy sauce is considered a faux pas? By respecting these customs, you not only show appreciation for the artistry but also enhance your overall dining experience.

SANTOS DE CARTIER ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST VERSATILE WATCH DESIGNS SHOWS ITS CREATIVE SIDE an enduring classic
T he Cartier Santos is one of the great classics of watch design, always appropriate for any occasion. It is also highly adaptable to various design interpretations, which is the great genius of Cartier’s watch collections. The Santos was famously created in 1904 — which makes it one of the earliest wristwatches on record — by Louis Cartier for his friend, Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. Santos didn’t want to have to dig for a pocket watch to navigate his flight legs, so he asked Louis to create a strap model. Since then, the Santos has evolved to become one of Cartier’s most beloved models, as much a signature of the brand as the Tank and the Panther. There have been many modern iterations since it made its first appearance more than a century ago, but the essential rounded square case, Roman numerals, and eight exposed screws on the bezel have endured. Here are some modern versions that we love, with state-of-the- art movements, materials, and design variations.
SANTOS DE CARTIER SKELETON Skeletonizing a movement involves cutting away a portion of the dial, plate, and bridges so that only the bare essentials are left, and the movement is exposed for our viewing pleasure. Cartier’s unique version of this art form is to shape the bridges in the style of Roman numerals, a signature element of the brand. The steel bracelet is interchangeable with an alligator strap, which comes with it. It contains the manual wound caliber 9611.
20 LENOX JEWELERS MAGAZINE
GOLD SANTOS DE CARTIER There are few watches more iconic than the yellow gold Santos de Cartier. It is about as classic as a dress watch can get, with the model’s signature Roman numerals, railway chapter ring, blued steel hands, and seven-sided crown. The case is a hefty 39.8 mm wide and 9.38 mm thick, and it is water resistant to 100 meters. It contains the automatic caliber 1847 MC.
SANTOS DE CARTIER STEEL Green dials started to appear on watches a few years ago when Pantone named it the color of the year and made it representative of all things ecological. It also just happens to look great on the wrist. On the steel Santos, it adds a pop of color to an otherwise classic aesthetic, which stands out even more when the steel bracelet is swapped out for the green alligator strap that comes with it.
SANTOS DE CARTIER CHRONOGRAPH When it comes to sports watches, even Cartier, with its classic Roman-numeral dial design, subscribes to the motto, “go big or go home.” This powerful chronograph, with the automatic 1904 CH MC caliber, is 43.3 mm wide and 12.4 mm thick. The blackened steel bracelet matches the bezel, but it can be swapped out for a black rubber or black “Gomma” alligator strap, thanks to Cartier’s QuickSwitch strap-change system.

MIKIMOTO
THE ORIGINAL PEARL COMPANY CELEBRATES MORE THAN A CENTURY AT THE TOP
A mong pearl companies, Mikimoto is the undisputed giant. The Japanese Akoya pearl cultivator celebrates its 130th anniversary this year, at a time when pearls are peaking, once again, in both the worlds of fashion and jewelry. Mikimoto can proudly claim to have invented the cultured pearl, along with the established standards of excellence in the production and grading of these beautiful gems. So naturally, its standards exceed all others. Only a small percentage of the world’s cultured pearls meet the quality criteria set by Mikimoto. At a time when supplies of Akoya pearls are dwindling and demand has never been higher, prices for pearls have soared over the past year, and Mikimoto pearls have become especially prized. To pearl lovers, the very best specimens are worth the cost and represent an investment in fine jewelry style, and substance. A Mikimoto strand is an heirloom. The company was built on a foundation of passion. As a boy, founder Kokichi Mikimoto was fascinated with natural pearls and sat for hours watching divers bring in their daily hauls from the waters near Toba, his home town on the eastern tip of Japan’s Shima peninsula. In the wild, fewer than one-in-a-thousand oyster shells can produce a pearl during a lifetime, but Mikimoto began to dream of finding a way to culture pearls and to do it in a way that consistently produced specimens that were perfectly round and smooth. That way, instead of being a luxury only for the wealthy, he could bring pearls to women everywhere.
His ultimate solution was to introduce an irritant into Akoya oysters — a tiny mother-of-pearl bead that stimulates the oyster’s nacre secretion, causing it to naturally create the thousands of layers around the bead that form a pearl. In 1893, he produced the world’s first cultured pearl. His pearls were a hit, and soon Mikimoto opened a store in Tokyo’s Ginza shopping district. In the process, he established one of the world’s original luxury brands. Stores in Paris, London, and New York soon followed. Mikimoto didn’t stop there. He sent skilled craftsmen to Europe to learn the latest design techniques and jewelry styles, including Art Deco and Art Nouveau, because he wanted to present his pearls in the finest way possible. He didn’t want to just show pearls as they were, but in the context of very fine jewelry. Mikimoto spent decades blending traditional Japanese metalworking craftsmanship with European manufacturing techniques to create what became the distinctive Mikimoto style. His work built the foundation for modern jewelry production in Japan. Mikimoto has continued to refine and expand upon Kokichi Mikimoto’s techniques, culturing many different types of pearls, including black and white South Sea cultured pearls. Today, 95 percent of all pearls on the market are cultured, meaning that humans played a role in their formation. High-quality natural pearls are very rare and have a premium price, but even among Akoya pearls, top specimens are rare. The top grades — AAA — represent less than 3 percent of the world’s pearl
harvest. Only a small percentage of these pearls would meet the standard and quality set by Mikimoto. The difference is obvious if you know what to look for. Akoya pearls are graded according to several factors, including the following: LUSTER The sharpness and amount of light reflected off the pearl’s surface. SHAPE The more perfectly round a pearl is, the more rare and prized it is. COLOR Pearl color is graded on the depth and saturation of the color. The more strongly colored pearls are more rare and valuable. Certain overtones or exotic body colors command premium pricing at auctions. SURFACE BLEMISHING Pearls with clean surfaces without inclusions like pin-pricks, scoring marks, chalky spots, and
wrinkles are much more highly valued than pearls with multiple blemishes.
SIZE Large pearls are rare. The majority of cultured pearls harvested consist of pearls under 10 mm, and wild pearls in very large sizes are the rarest of the rare, so the bigger they are (all other things being equal) the more valuable they are.

FANCY FINGERS
Rings by Pomellato.
W earing multiple rings isn’t an entirely new concept — different cultures around the world have long embraced it as a symbol of wealth, power, and social status — but the practice has evolved to become more about personal expression than anything else. The availability of rings with minimal jewels, perfect for matching and stacking, has fulfilled this individualistic inclination and made it more accessible than ever. Plus, the desire to breathe new life into antique, vintage, or sentimental pieces has rendered the multi-finger ring trend even more popular, allowing wearers to blend the old and the new in a meaningful and fashion-forward way.
Out of all of the ring styles, the pinky ring has arguably made the biggest comeback. Designers have experimented with the pinky ring as a canvas for many different styles, some as traditional signets or talismans and others with the spotlight on gemstones or diamonds. There is a wide range of designs to suit every personal preference or sentiment. As an added bonus, the pinky ring carries no connotation of gender, so it’s widely embraced. With all of the possibilities when it comes to ring styling, wearing multiple rings makes the trend feel particularly personal, adaptable, and fresh — and one that’s here to stay.

PICKLEBALL TAKING THE WORLD BY STORM
F rom YMCAs to driveways, from school playgrounds to country club courts, a new sport has emerged, and it’s captivating people of all ages and fitness levels. Pickleball, a hybrid of tennis, badminton, and ping pong, with its fast-paced action, easy accessibility, and addictive gameplay is taking the world by storm. What started as a niche backyard activity has now evolved into a juggernaut, attracting millions of enthusiasts worldwide. Pickleball’s origins can be traced back to the mid-1960s when it was invented by three dads on Bainbridge Island, Washington. Named after the family dog, Pickles, who would often chase the ball and run off with it, the sport quickly spread around their local community. Fast forward to today and pickleball has become a global phenomenon, played on dedicated courts, in community centers, and even at professional tournaments. One of the key factors contributing to pickleball’s exponential growth is its accessibility. Unlike some traditional sports, pickleball is easy to learn and can be played by people of all ages and athletic abilities. The court is smaller than a tennis court, and the lightweight paddles and plastic balls are more forgiving, making it less physically demanding on the body. This accessibility has made pickleball a popular choice for older adults looking to stay active and socialize.
26 LENOX JEWELERS MAGAZINE
Another reason for the rapid rise in popularity is its addictive and fast-paced gameplay. The combination of some of the best parts of several racket sports, pickleball is a unique and exciting experience. The game features strategic shot placement, quick reflexes, and intense rallies, keeping players engaged and constantly on their toes. It’s this combination of skill and excitement that has captured the hearts of both recreational players and competitive athletes.
The community aspect of pickleball has also played a significant role in the sport’s growth. With the rise of social media and online platforms, players from around the world can connect, share their experiences, and organize events. This shared connection has fostered a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, making pickleball an ideal sport for building friendships and networks. Professional pickleball tournaments have also emerged, attracting top athletes, further boosting the sport’s visibility. As the sport gains more recognition, it’s likely to attract even larger audiences and sponsorship opportunities, elevating it to new heights. As the sport continues to evolve, it’s clear that pickleball is here to stay. So grab a paddle, find a court, and join the pickleball revolution today!

IN SIMON’S WORDS “My parents handed down the values of honest, hard work to all their children. We were taught that if you could build something with your hands, you’d never go hungry. When I first came to America, I had $200 in my pocket and a dream of going to college to be an engineer. But when I tried to sign up for classes in New York, they were thousands of dollars! Luckily, I had a relative working in the diamond district who invited me to work there and save up for school. I started setting diamonds and soon fell in love with the process, artistry, and details of jewelry making. Before long, what started as a hobby became a passion. I began making my own designs in my spare time and saving up for more jewelry-making materials instead of classes.
SETTING DIAMONDS All Simon-Set pieces use patented technology to replicate the look of invisible- set, while providing more security and protection. Every diamond is set by hand by a seasoned artisan who specializes in one of three disciplines: pavé, channel, or prong settings. Simon G. artisans ensure that all diamonds are securely fastened and reflecting light exactly as conceptualized. Additionally, unlike many in the industry who use glue to set diamonds or set them using only two prongs, Simon G. goes a step further and uses four prongs to protect diamonds from falling out.
“MY, HOW THINGS HAVE CHANGED SINCE THEN. NOW, SIMON G. HAS MANY DESIGNERS FROM ALL AROUND THE WORLD, AND OUR HANDCRAFTED WORK IS SOLD IN OVER 900 STORES ACROSS NORTH AMERICA. AS PROUD AS I AM OF WHAT WE’VE ACCOMPLISHED, I STILL GET MY BIGGEST THRILL FROM CREATING A NEW PIECE. SITTING DOWN AND SKETCHING OUT AN IDEA IS AS MAGICAL TO ME NOW AS IT WAS THE VERY FIRST TIME I DID IT.”

IN SUPPORT OF WINGS OF HOPE
Wings of Hope provides preventive care, such as vaccinations, healthy baby checks, and medicines, as well as sometimes transporting patients to receive medical care elsewhere or flying medical equipment and volunteer surgeons to remote areas to set up surgical units. Last year, 350 volunteers gave their time to Wings of Hope, which has been nominated twice for a Nobel Peace Prize. Fuel costs are covered by donations, and sometimes donations come in the form of aircraft. “As part of our mission to bring change for the better, we often collaborate with inspirational agencies that share a common vision,” says VJ Geronimo, CEO of Oris North America. “Change comes when we work together.” Oris is making two models to help support the endeavor, both based on the signature Big Crown pilot’s watch, powered by Oris’s high-performance automatic movement, caliber 401, with a five-day power reserve. One is a 40 mm steel watch limited to 1,000 pieces; the other is a 38 mm 18k yellow gold piece, limited to 100 pieces. Both come on Cervo Volante sustainable deer leather straps. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of each watch will be donated to Wings of Hope.

LOCAL SPIRITS
RAISE YOUR Spirits!
L iquors, wine, and service — oh my! In these days of superstore and warehouse mania, it’s refreshing (literally) to find a local, independently-owned liquor store. You walk into walls full of both everyday favorites and extra special offerings plus someone on hand to help you shop through the seemingly endless selection. Parag Patel took over ownership of Turnpike Spirit Shop back in 2013. He is the third owner, and quickly became a well-known face on Blackrock Turnpike. Parag loves being a part of the community, saying, “Over the years, I have made many friends, shared many a drink, and spoke of many a tale. I hope to continue to do so for many more years to come!” His shop is warm and inviting, just like his personality. Always thinking of others, Patel really stepped up in 2020. When Covid struck and so many of his fellow local businesses were suffering, Patel and his customers teamed up to raise thousands of dollars to help retailers who had to close or limit operations due to the pandemic operating restrictions. It’s friends and fellow business owners like Parag Patel that make our local community what it is today. In fact, Parag supplies the liquer for Lenox Jewelers. As you plan your holiday festivities, stop by Fairfield’s own Turnpike Spirit Shop at 1838 Blackrock Turnpike. Or call (203) 335-9063 for curbside and local delivery.

JEWELRY + MEN
We’re living in a golden age of personal expression, trending across race, gender, age, and status, and that means there’s never been a better time for men to flex with some well-chosen jewelry. Here are a few suggestions to help dapper dudes start — or add to — their collections.

Necklaces are a fantastic category for men to consider. A chain of any length and size can be tucked inside a shirt for an understated approach or pulled free to drape proudly across the chest. Smaller links give a subtle look, while chunky chains have a bold beauty of their own. Many men’s pendants feature silhouettes inspired by dog tags to evoke the qualities of strength, bravery, and honor associated with traditional military styles. Layering allows for maximum versatility and self-expression: wear one necklace alone or stack a few together to build your own look. Wristwear is another jewelry genre for the modern man. Like watches, bracelets are visible when worn but won’t get in a busy guy’s way as he goes about his day. From the chic gleam of a sleek cuff peeking out from a tailored shirtsleeve to the compelling texture of a leather bracelet accentuating a powerful forearm, there are many options available for the man who wants to try rocking a bracelet. A well-chosen chain will go with any outfit, while beaded and braided styles can be a great way to add some flair to a bracelet without making it feel overly fussy. We can’t talk about men’s jewelry without mentioning rings. Many men are already comfortable wearing a wedding band, so why not consider acquiring a wardrobe of alternate wedding bands to switch up the mood for different occasions? If we look beyond the fourth finger of the left hand, many men find themselves drawn to signet rings. These hefty, bold, often personalized pieces date back to ancient times, when a nobleman would wear a signet with his official seal to mark correspondence. Today, signet rings are usually engraved with initials or meaningful symbols, or set with gems. Decorative knives are another great way to express personal style. They are often made by experienced jewelry designers and can display truly luxurious craftsmanship. Beautiful blades, adorned handles, and thoughtful details make these pieces of weaponry feel more like portable art than mere tools. Today, men who wear jewelry are associated with power and panache; throughout history, jewelry has been worn by kings, pirates, rock stars, and trendsetters. Not convinced or need more style inspo? Look up photos of the Rock, Harry Styles, and Usher, and check out how good these famous jewelry- loving men look when they wear their treasures in real life.

LUXURY AND PERFORMANCE
ONE HAUL IN BY GARY WOLLENHAUPT
T he new BMW XM Hybrid blends electric vehicle responsiveness and M-series performance for an electrifying experience. It’s based on the X7 BMW’s entry in the three- row SUV class, perfect for taking the hockey team to practice and ferrying clients out to dinner. But the XM makes do with only two rows, with luxurious seating for five. To brew up the XM, BMW added a plug-in hybrid drivetrain to the X7 for better performance with reasonable fuel economy.

WITHOUT COMPROMISE This isn’t one of those electric cars with thin seats and skinny tires. The XM is full of luxury details, like articulating seat backs that let you adjust just the upper part of the seat — perfect to accommodate a ponytail after a workout. The backup assistant remembers your path and backs you up exactly on the path you took. You don’t have to worry about reversing out of a long driveway or a wrong turn. Under the hood, the XM combines a 4.4-liter V-8 BMW M TwinPower Turbo combustion engine and a high-performance electric motor. Together, these powerhouses deliver a maximum of 644 horsepower and
590 lb-ft of torque. Using launch control, courtesy of the M-tuned 8-speed automatic transmission, the sprint from 0-60 mph takes only 4.1 seconds. When it’s fully charged, the BMW XM can drive up to 30 miles on all- electric power. For 2024, BMW has upped the ante with the 2024 BMW XM Label Red, which brings together the M HYBRID drivetrain with ad- ditional power and unique design accents that clearly announce its exceptional performance capabilities. With a maximum system output of 738 hp, the BMW XM Label Red is simply the most powerful BMW M road vehicle ever made.
WITHOUT LIMITS The XM is not all about power. It’s a shrine of driver assist and comfort technology. The standard Active Driving Assistant Professional system adds smart features like frontal collision warning, active blind spot detection, lane departure warning, and speed limit info, making every trip a breeze. The interior is designed to shelter you in comfort and style. Some of the finest leather BMW has ever offered is standard, while the headliner and pillars are covered in Alcantara, a suede-like material. After only a few minutes, you’ll be won over by the comfort and support of the seats. There’s plenty of legroom in the second row, which provides a lounge-like experience. Heated rear seats are also available. The driver-centric displays provide infor- mation and controls with a touch through the 14.9-inch digital cluster and driver information display integrated into the same wide screen with the 12.3-inch touchscreen. The prism headliner is intriguing, with its unique texture and 100 LEDs that provide constant or moving light effects. The cabin has pulsating lights to warn occupants of a potential hazard when opening the doors or to announce an incoming phone call. The one-of-a kind luxury experience starts at the beginning. Work with your local dealer to express the uniqueness of BMW XM with over 165 stunning paint colors and finishes and bespoke interior options.
