PEARLS OF WISDOM

BY CAROL BESLER

PEARLCORE celebrating the jewel of the century

PEARLS ARE TRENDING RIGHT NOW, BUT HAVE THEY EVER REALLY BEEN OUT OF FASHION?

F rom heirloom to modern chic, pearls never go out of style. But this year, they’re sitting at the peak of the trend cycle, and their popularity shows no signs of abating. The reason is simple: versatility. A piece of pearl jewelry can be almost anything: retro, modern, avant-garde, maximalist, elegant, even colorful. A pearl can convey elegance, but it can also convey power, and not just for women. The pearl strand — yes, strand — has become a hot accessory for men. Musicians have been flaunting the power strand on stage and about town, including A$AP Rocky, the Jonas Brothers, Harry Styles, and Pharrell. Fashion designer Marc Jacobs has been wearing pearls

Pearl strands or earrings with a leather jacket make a great juxtaposition. Wearing them with jeans is another high-low fashion statement. Pearl headbands are a chic way to sweep your hair back that beats a scrunchy every time. Pearls of any style fit in perfectly with the current mermaidcore trend, which includes things like scalloped edges, iridescence, nautical textures, distressed fringe, netting, sea shells, and sparkly swimwear. Pearl chokers are everything right now. Classic yet trendy, and it-girl chic. Take a cue from the retro-1970s look of attaching a decorative clasp or enhancer to a strand of pearls. It’s a chance to add diamonds, gemstones, or an elaborately engraved or shaped gold element, creating two looks in one.

since the pandemic. The trend even extends to athletes. Atlanta Braves outfielder Joc Pederson often wears a pearl strand when he’s on the field. His bold jewelry choice may forever alter our perception of what it means to dress like a jock. The current pearl trend is not tied to a specific type of pearl or design. It’s an anything-goes wave that embraces the gamut, beginning with traditional strands. They’re back, and they’re rocking everything from jeans to gowns. At the 2023 Met Gala, Kim

Kardashion wore multiple strands, from choker to matinee length. They even cascaded down the bottom half of her dress. Salma Hayek’s strapless red gown

featured rows of pearls draped over each shoulder in one of the sexiest applications of pearls to hit the red carpet.
