THE ART of HIGH JEWELRY

OUR FOUNDING STORY WELCOME TO J.R. DUNNMAGAZINE

James Robert Dunn started his career in 1967 as a sales representative for IBM. During a sales call to a jewelry company in Malden, Massachusetts, Jim picked up a magazine about the jewelry business and became intrigued. When his schedule allowed, Jim took

a chance and start a jewelry business. With their savings of $10,000, the couple purchased a small house in Hanover, Massachusetts and converted it into their first jewelry store, The House of Gems.

correspondence courses in gemology, and went to New York to learn about diamonds and colored stones.

During the first year, their store was burglarized, and every piece of jewelry was taken, including customers’ repairs while they were in between insurance policies. The couple went from door to door informing and reassuring each and every client that their prized possessions would be replaced. Ann Marie and Jim paid for the stolen jewelry out of their own pockets to preserve their reputation for integrity and trust. The Dunn’s misfortune turned out to be a blessing

While at IBM, Jim met his future wife, Ann Marie Pelliccia, who was working as an executive secretary. Ann Marie, like Jim, was also driven by an entrepreneurial spirit. She was ten years old when her family immigrated to this country from Italy. It didn’t take long for Ann Marie to master the English language and become the interpreter for her father’s cabinet making business. From the age of ten, she went to work every day after school with her father until she graduated high school, and soon after, she joined the team at IBM.

in disguise. Word spread when the couple made good on their promise, and business began to grow by leaps and bounds. The House of Gems soon outgrew its tiny location. Jim and Ann Marie relocated to a nearby mall in South Weymouth, Massachusetts and changed the name to J.R. Dunn Jewelers, placing emphasis on the importance of the family-owned and operated business.

The couple married in 1969, and together they decided to take

In 1978, the couple relocated to South Florida and opened a small boutique, serving a select clientele by appointment only. This is when Robert Pelliccia, Ann Marie’s brother, came on board and eventually started creating one-of-a-kind custom creations. It didn’t take long for J.R. Dunn Jewelers to outgrow its location once again when they made the monumental decision to purchase a 6,000-square-foot building in Lighthouse Point, FL. Shortly after, the Lighthouse Point store was expanded to its current 8,000 square feet. In 2004, Sean founded the company’s e-commerce website, JRDunn. com, in an effort to take the business to the next level with a major technological era on the horizon. Jim and Ann Marie credited Sean with much of the technological advancement achieved for the company. Fortunately, the faith Jim and Ann Marie placed in Sean paid off and JRDunn.com now serves clients in over 20 countries. In addition, to being a close-knit family that supports one another, the Dunn’s have forged many great relationships with their employees, clients, and in the community. “If you’re in business, and the people in

the community are supporting you, then you should go back and support the community,” said Jim. The Dunn’s credit these relationships for having allowed J.R. Dunn Jewelers to persevere and thrive, even in tough times. In 2021, Co-Founder of J.R. Dunn Jewelers, Jim Dunn passed away leaving behind a legacy and impact on friends, family, and our community that cannot be forgotten. Today, Ann Marie and Sean carry on the business with a mission to forge ahead in accomplishing the exciting projects that lay ahead which Jim was so passionate for, including a state-of-the-art complete re-design of J.R. Dunn Jewelers coming in 2022. On any given day you are likely to find multiple family members on the premises at J.R. Dunn Jewelers. Even Ann Marie’s mother, Fernanda, might be the one who greets you at the door. Every guest entering the store today is treated with the same standards of excellence and friendly service established many years ago in that tiny house in Massachusetts. It is truly a family affair.

Rolex, the world’s most collected watch, singles out certain models each year for updates, new designs, or improvements. It could be a new metal, a new dial treatment, or even a new movement. This year, the Explorer gets some special attention, with new materials and a new dial treatment. The Daytona was endowed with an out-of-this-world dial, and the Datejust is embellished with a subtle palm frond motif.

R O L E X Explorer in 18k Yellow Gold and Oystersteel Explorer II in Oystersteel

The Explorer has been enriched with a touch of gold this year with yellow Rolesor, a true Rolex signature combining 18k yellow gold and Oystersteel. A sparkling rim of gold also surrounds the numerals and hands. The dial has been given a rich, glossy lacquer finish, in keeping with the model’s climb into gold territory. The black color contrasts beautifully with the indexes and signature 3, 6, and 9 numerals, especially since they are now lit up with new and improved Chromalight, Rolex’s proprietary luminescent material. In dark conditions, the hands and hour markers glow a vibrant blue, and in daylight, they remain a bright white. The movement is also new for the Explorer. The caliber 3230 features Rolex’s signature Chronergy escapement with a blue Parachrom anti-magnetic hairspring, Paraflex shock absorbers and a power reserve of 70 hours. The new 42 mm Explorer II is all Oystersteel, a unique alloy that is particularly strong and corrosion resistant — perfect for an adventure watch like the Explorer II, which has the added function of a second time zone. It is indicated on a 24-hour display with an orange hour hand on the central dial. It contains the Rolex caliber 3285, which is new to this model. It features Rolex’s patented Chronergy escapement with a blue Parachrom anti-magnetic hairspring, Paraflex shock absorbers and a power reserve of 70 hours. The Explorer was sized down a notch this year to 36 mm from 39 mm, but that takes it back to the beginning — the Explorer was 36 mm when it was first introduced in 1953. The Explorer II remains a robust 42 mm.

This year’s introductions also include some sparkle, with a new Lady- Datejust adorned with more than 1,000 diamonds. They cover the dial, case, lugs, and bracelet like a blanket of sparkling snow, contrasted by elegant black Roman numerals. The 28 mm watch is 18k yellow gold, and it contains the caliber 2236, with a precision rating of -2/+2 seconds per day. The new lineup from Rolex for 2021 is a nicely balanced assortment, ranging from rugged professional watches and embellished sports watches to decorated dials and gem-encrusted beauties — something for everyone!

TO HAVE KNOWN JIM DUNN IS TO HAVE LOVED HIM. A MAN THAT WOULD DO ANYTHING FOR ANYONE, WHO WOULD ALWAYS PUSH YOU TO DO BETTER AND WORK HARDER, OR TO MAKE YOU LAUGH THE DEEPEST LAUGH. HONORINGOUR FOUNDER T H E L E G AC Y O F J I M D U N N BY JENNA FISH

M “

y dad was the type of guy whose life experience helped so many people, no matter what they needed,” said his son Sean.

“Jim was so incredibly proud of the business he and I built together,” said Ann Marie. “It showed in his passion for moving the business forward each and every day from the most important strategic initiatives right down to the simplest of tasks, like stocking the water bottles or making the shipping boxes. No job was too big or too small for Jim Dunn and we look forward to continuing on his legacy.” WHERE I T AL L BEGAN Jim was well-known for his incredible work ethic, instilled upon him at a very young age growing up in the blue-collar town of Braintree,

Massachusetts. Jim’s father passed away when he was very young leaving his mother, a visiting nurse, his older brother Donald, and himself to pave their way together. His mother proved to be the best role model for the two boys, often working two jobs just to put food on the table. It was at this young age that his entrepreneurial spirit first arose, working on a paper delivery route even through the coldest, snowy winters just to contribute income for his family. As his paper route expanded, he decided to feed that growth and hired his older brother Donald to assist him in reaching more customers.. As he got older, Jim moved into construction where he loved being hands on and always worked hard.

“Whether they had a little car trouble in the parking lot, needed help paying their rent, or just a shoulder to lean on, he was there. You could always count on Jim Dunn.” He was a man like no other, who would help anyone and everyone—and would do so quietly without any praise or recognition. Jim passed away this past May at the age of 78, leaving behind a legacy he built alongside his wife and son that left its mark on so many.

A LOVE STORY FOR THE AGES After graduation, Jim began his work as a Sales Representative at IBM traveling door-to- door selling typewriters and copy machines. It wasn’t long before Jim had spotted Ann Marie, an executive secretary at IBM, and the chase began. “It was 1966, Jim and I were both working at IBM. Jim was a new hire and kept asking his associates, “who is that girl in the green corduroy mini skirt!?” He kept at it until one day in the parking lot, we crossed paths. Jim drummed up the courage to ask me out and wanted to take me to Coven’s for a hot dog! You can imagine my surprise—asking a true Italian girl to go out for a hot dog, an American food I had never even had.

And so, I politely declined his invitation, and we went our separate ways,” explained Ann Marie. The chase continued day after day. It turned out that his fourth effort to ask Ann Marie out was the ticket, when Jim invited himself to go to Ann Marie’s traditional Italian family’s house for dinner. “I could not believe his persistence. I thought to myself, ‘he is really trying’ and so I agreed. Jim walked into my family’s home that evening and got to experience a true, Italian family dinner for the first time. After all, as an Irishman, he was used to ‘good Italian food’ being Chef Boyardee! Jim absolutely fell in love with our Italian culture and cuisine that night. He couldn’t believe the way that we enjoyed a delicious spread of appetizers,

charcuterie, and big bowls of pasta—but then how it continued beyond that into a large plate of meatballs, roast beef, and fried peppers and on and on. The wine was flowing, the conversation was rich, and that was how our love affair first began,” said Ann Marie. “Jim was always a man who went after what he wanted, and that is what made our love, our family, and our business so full of passion.” A TRUE MARKETER ’ S MIND Since its beginnings, Jim’s passion flourished in the marketing side of the business while Ann Marie thrived in jewelry buying, finding unusual pieces of jewelry for their special clients—they were truly a dynamic duo. When their son, Sean, joined into the family business, he quickly followed on his father’s marketing-minded path. “The three of us have worked so beautifully together,” said Sean about their family dynamic. “Dad just brought it all together, he supported me starting the online business super early and we forged through our mistakes...he always had confidence in my Mom as his business partner and her uncanny knack to find the perfect piece for our client’s special occasions.” Jim was always using his wit and humor to come up with the next marketing campaign, a few of which have now become infamous Jim Dunn “icons.” During the late 80’s, Jim turned the hit campaign of “where’s the beef” into “where’s the gold!?” It was instantly a hit, remaining memorable in everyone’s minds.

Jim at Dunn’s Run

“Where’s the Gold!?”

In true Jim Dunn fashion, it didn’t just end there. At the time, Mr. T. and his infamous gold chains was all over every newspaper. Jim seized this opportunity and recreated the ad himself, modeling a seemingly infinite number of gold chains, bracelets, and rings which became “Mr. T. ain’t got nothin’ on me!” These fun-spirited campaigns caught on immediately, adored by everyone who saw them along with many, many others. There was nothing Jim loved more than coming up with something fresh and new. Throughout his career, Jim accomplished many milestones and was honored with several prestigious accolades that meant the world to him. His entrepreneurial spirit was something engrained in him from just a young age, and so it showed. In 2002, Jim received Sun Sentinel’s Excalibur Award as Small Business Leader of the Year, a true homage to his successes. He was later inducted into the Nova Southeastern University Entrepreneur Hall of Fame as well, honoring lifetime achievements of outstanding business leaders in our South Florida Community. Jim’s legacy lives on in every one of the past and present members of the J.R. Dunn Team who had the pleasure of learning from him. “As I began my new life in jewelry, I met an amazing man,” said Michael Bohner, former employee of J.R. Dunn. “He was the first person to come to work every day. He made me want to be there early – just to hang out with him. I’m a better person because of Jim Dunn.” PASS ION FOR OUR COMMUNI T Y Giving back to the community was something incredibly near and dear to both Jim and Ann Marie’s hearts. In 1996, South Florida businessman and philanthropist, Jim Moran, inspired Jim to visit a local Boys & Girls Club in Hollywood, Florida.

After the visit, Jim founded Dunn’s Run a 5k walk/ run and 5-mile run benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County. Since its founding 25 years ago, Dunn’s Run has raised over $3.5 million dollars for The Boys & Girls Clubs—a milestone Jim was so proud of. But it didn’t stop there. Jim and Ann Marie together also support many other non-profit organizations in the local South Florida community and beyond, including the Humane Society of Broward County, first responders, Naked Warrior Project honoring fall Navy SEALS, Wounded Warrior Project, and many more. “I loved how his eyes sparkled when we would visit with puppies for our photos,” said Cheri Wachter of the Humane Society of Broward County. In 2016, Jim and Ann Marie were inducted into the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County Lifetime Giving Society celebrating them as one of their top donors demonstrating a deep commitment to the kids of the club. The following year, they were inducted into the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County Hall of Fame at their 50th Annual Dinner Auction. “Jim was truly one-of-a-kind! He made a lasting impact on the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County by his dedication to our community and his passion for the annual Dunn’s Run. He will be greatly missed, but his legacy will live on through the annual Dunn’s Run and the difference he made in the lives of so many youth,” said Matt Organ, Co-CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County. Together they were also honored in 2018 as Keepers of the City of Lighthouse Point, the small town where J.R. Dunn Jewelers and so many of its dear clients reside. The community of Lighthouse Point has always remained close-knit in nature, revolving around small local businesses which are often run by the residents themselves.

“He was an incredibly kind, warm, and sweet man who greeted his clients with the biggest smile and best hug,” said longtime client and Lighthouse Point resident, Erin Clampett. “I was always excited to go in and shop because it meant I was able to spend time with Jim. He made everyone feel like family and for that, I’m forever grateful to have had the opportunity to know him.” CONT INUING THE LEGACY Today, Ann Marie and Sean are dedicated to continuing on Jim’s legacy, including the completion of a complete rebuild and state- of-the-art design of our J.R. Dunn campus in 2022. Before his passing, Jim was completely immersed in the beginnings of this new chapter for J.R. Dunn. He was always thinking about the future. “Jim would have loved to have put his construction boots on one more time,” said Ann Marie. “He thrived on big projects and being in the thick of things.” We’re incredibly excited to share it with you all soon in the coming months. COMMI TTED TO OUR COMMUNI T Y Ann Marie and Sean remain committed to continuing our family tradition the trio built together in giving back to our community. “We know Jim will be smiling down on us as we launch some exciting new initiatives in our South Florida community in the coming months, including the Habitat for Humanity Women’s Build where we have the opportunity to provide a family with a place to call home,” said Ann Marie. “I’m so glad I am able to be a part of kicking off this amazing project alongside such wonderful women that have made a lasting impact in our community,” she continued. Together, Ann Marie and Sean look forward to passionately carrying on the Dunn family legacy with their shared vision for the future.

he very word ‘passion’ elicits a powerful sense of emotion or feeling. That very essence comes through in the design of our in-house designer Robert Pelliccia’s Passion Collection, which has swiftly become adored by clients for its stunning design and craftsmanship. “When I am designing jewelry, it is like the beginning of a new romance. You have to get to know the object of your design—to fall in love with every shape, movement, and detail. It is a discovery of what works and what doesn’t,” said Robert Pelliccia. The 20-time award winning designer went through this exact process in the creation of his Passion Collection of

“Years ago, Sean asked me to redesign his wife’s engagement ring. Once I understood the general feel they were looking for, I started playing with shapes and concepts,” he said. “The idea is to take something beautiful and make it exceptional,” Pelliccia continued. Viviana and Robert sat down together and designed the ring of her dreams, all centered around a stunning emerald cut diamond.

The collection masterfully showcases the center diamond’s beauty. “It’s truly amazing how no matter what shape diamond you create it around, it comes out stunning. The ring literally turns heads, Viviana has received endless compliments on it,” said Sean Dunn. The highly loved Passion ring features three beautifully lined rows that flow along both sides of the setting, with a row of baguette diamonds in the middle. “When I finished the design, our team loved it so much that they started to show the design to their clients. Every few days they would tell me they had another order for a ‘Vivi’ ring,” he stated. “After a while, it became so in demand that it grew into ‘The Passion Collection’. To this day, this design is still one of my most loved engagement rings,” said Pelliccia.

he second-generation Tesla Roadster, originally unveiled in 2017 and expected to enter the market in 2022, is the quickest car in the world, with record-setting acceleration, range, and performance. With SpaceX’s package it will go 0-60 mph in 1.1 seconds! WHAT’S OLD IS NEW AGAIN The Roadster will be a new addition to the Tesla lineup when it eventually enters production, resurrecting the nameplate worn by the company’s first model back in 2008.

In November 2017, Tesla revealed the second-generation Roadster. Plans were made for a 2021 release, but it’s now expected to arrive for the 2022 model year. The good news? Until then, you could visit one on display at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, California. Tesla hasn’t been bringing out the new Roadster prototype often since the unveiling. This is understandable, considering the production version has been delayed several times. Tesla is not looking to promote it too soon or too much. But this past summer it was in the rare situation where anyone who wanted to buy a ticket for the Petersen Automotive Museum could go and see it. And now you can order it as well.

Musk has made a lot of promises with the Roadster, claiming the car will offer 620 miles of range with its tri-motor configuration — one in the front and two in the back — that will power all four wheels. The power and range will come from a 250-kilowatt-hour battery. When Tesla revealed it in 2017, the company said the car would offer 7,375 pound-feet (10,000 Newton-meters) of torque and that it would hit 100 mph (160 kph) in 4.2 seconds, which is quicker than most cars to 60. It would complete the quarter-mile in 8.8 seconds. All that performance won’t be cheap, as the car will be capable of reaching speeds over 250 mph (402 kph). The base Roadster starts at $200,000 with the Founders Series car, of which only 1,000 will be made, costing $250,000 each. Tesla required $50,000 to reserve one, and it should be a stunning performance car when it arrives. Musk often remained vague about a new official timeline for the electric hypercar program, but he confirmed earlier this year that the engineering of the new Tesla Roadster will be completed this year in order to enter production in 2022. He even said that he expects Tesla to have a new drivable release candidate by the end of the summer and that version should end up being the production version available next year.

There, next to the car, was an interesting plaque that reveals a startling zero-to-60 mile-per-hour time of 1.1 seconds, when equipped with the SpaceX package.

Musk took to Twitter to confirm the revelation, saying that it’s possible with “the SpaceX rocket thruster option package.” In true James Bond fashion, the Roadster might have cold air thrusters, supplied by compressed air tanks, with the thrusters hidden behind the license plate that’ll help propel the all-wheel-drive sports car to cruising speeds. Without the package, Tesla claims the car should be able to hit 60 mph (96 kilometers per hour) in 1.9 seconds, still mind-blowing, to say the least.

Popular among water sports enthusiasts and sun-seekers, this beach shows off its quainter side in the spring and autumn when the majority of tourists have gone home.

A quiet destination steeped in history, Sicily is a scenic, slow-paced place which goes beyond the mere beach destination. The main island boasts stunning beaches, charming seaside towns, such as Syracuse and Trapani, and well- preserved Roman and Greek ruins which have stood for millennia. If you’re the type who likes to explore, a day or two island-hopping across the Aeolian Islands will prove to be an adventure.

Right near Morocco on the edge of Europe, Spain’s Canary Islands are a year- round destination for the beach enthusiast. An archipelago, each island has its own personality, but by far the most impressive is Lanzarote. With its secluded beaches, white sands, and the world-famous Papagayo Beach, which is shaped like a shell, Lanzarote is characterised by volcanic hills and is a popular destination amont sun-seekers, who flock to the island every year. And if you’re a diving enthusiast, Museo Atlantico, Europe’s first underwater museum, will impress.

COMINO, MAL TA

Malta might be an underrated beach destination, but it has much to offer. One of the hidden gems of Europe is in Malta — Comino, an island with a dazzling turquoise lagoon which enthrals everyone who visits. Also known as the Blue Lagoon, Comino features one of the prettiest, most striking beaches in the whole of Europe. With peaceful warm, clear waters and chilled vibes, especially in the off-season, Comino should be on your bucket list.

PORTO SANTO, MADE I RA, PORTUGAL

Another year-round destination, Portugal’s Porto Santo near Madeira, is renowned for its dazzling beaches, snorkelling sites, and miles of pristine, fine sand. Situated about 620 miles off of the mainland in the Atlantic Ocean, Madeira and Porto Santo also offer innumerable hiking opportunities for the adventurous, superb tropical gardens, and a lively cultural scene that will please all-comers. Oh, and the sweet taste of refreshing Madeira wine is a bonus.

diamond ring is beautiful no matter how you look at it, but not every diamond ring is the same. Changing the cut and shape of a diamond can make it beautiful in a whole new way. The 57-facet round-

or marquise diamonds add the illusion of length to shorter fingers, as do tapered side stones, such as baguettes (a rectangular cut without beveled corners). The princess cut is another favorite choice for center stones. The face-up shape of the princess cut is square or rectangular, and the profile or side-view shape is similar to that of an inverted pyramid with four beveled sides. The cut is executed with a series of unique, chevron-shaped facets in the pavilion, which combine to give a unique cross-shaped reflection when the stone is viewed directly through the table.

one that feels a little bit vintage. The cut dates back 200 years and was once considered the favorite of royals. Today’s versions use modern cutting technology to imbue the cushion with impressive sparkle. There are also specialty cuts unique to certain manufacturers. One is the Asscher cut, originally created in the early 1900s by the Asscher Brothers of Holland’s Asscher Diamond Company (now the Royal Asscher Diamond Company). For decades, Asscher cuts were primarily found in vintage jewelry stores, but the shape surged in popularity again during the early 2000s. Asscher cuts look similar to emerald cuts, with the most obvious difference being that they are square instead of rectangular. This cut features large stepped facets and a tall crown that produces a very high brilliance. Although the Asscher cut is considered a square shape, it is actually somewhat octagonal, since all four corners are cropped. However, these cropped corners are not noticeable once the diamond is mounted into a four-prong setting. Another special cut is the Radiant, which is a square cut with a complete brilliant-cut facet pattern applied to both the crown and pavilion, creating a vibrant and lively square (or rectangular) diamond, with a total of 70 facets.

brilliant cut is the most popular form of diamond for rings because it produces the most pure white light return. It is defined according to specific mathematically calculated angles that are designed to make it reflect light from the inner facets. But it’s not the only choice, and it’s definitely not the only beautiful choice. There are many cuts and shapes to choose from, all of which have their own unique charms. Fancy shapes such as pear, marquise (a long rectangle with pointed tips), emerald (a rectangular step cut with tapered corners), and ovals are popular alternatives to the round-brilliant. Oval- shaped center stones and solitaires have become particularly popular this year. Oval diamonds are not only a unique alternative to round, but visually they seem larger than round or square cut diamonds of the same size. Not only that, but the elongated style makes the fingers look longer. In fact, all long shaped stones like oval, pear, emerald,

The cushion cut — so named for its softly rounded corners that resemble a pillow — is another favorite,

Prong setting is the most common setting in jewelry, and it is often used in solitaire diamond rings because it uses the least amount of metal to hold the stone, thus showing off the diamond to its best advantage. This setting is typically a number of gold posts (usually four or six), called prongs, arranged in a shape and size to hold the stone, and fixed at the base. After the stone is inserted between the prongs, a tool is used to bend the prongs gently over the crown of the stone. When a center stone is surrounded by a halo of smaller stones, that is given the self-explanitory name of a halo setting. It is the biggest thing to hit engagement ring design since the prong setting and now serves as a modern classic. The halo adds visual interest to a single stone, while making it look much bigger. Designers have recently adopted the halo into square and hexagonal frames, featuring colored gemstones and diamonds, as well as baguettes.

Bezel setting is also popular. This is when the metal is rounded or bent into the shape and size of the stone. The diamond is then inserted into the bezel, and the metal is rubbed over the stone, holding it in place. This method works well for either cabochon or faceted stones. Rings are sometimes surrounded by smaller diamonds on the shank that are pavé set — closely set together with minimum visibility of the tiny metal beads or prongs that hold them in place. The effect is that of a surface “paved” with diamonds. Some women prefer a so-called east-west setting, when an elongated stone such as an oval, radiant cut, or marquise is set sideways across the finger, as opposed to the traditional north-south direction up and down the finger. This modern setting has reignited the popularity of cuts like pear and marquise.

Gold is the traditional material for wedding bands. This symbolic metal is available primarily in yellow, white, and rose, although other colors such as blackened and brown gold can be found. Gold can be finished in a variety of ways, from polished to matte. Since it is a softer metal, it can be scratched or dented, but it can be re-polished to its shimmering glory, and its softness allows for elaborate engraving or filigree patterns on the shank. Scrollwork, floral motifs, or an elegantly intertwined band can lend a subtle touch of elegance or harken back to bygone eras. Rose gold is gaining popularity, particularly in bridal, where it is seen as softer than yellow gold and with romantic, or vintage undertones.

Platinum is also a popular choice for wedding bands. It is one of the most durable and expensive of the precious metals, with a beautiful greyish-white luster. Platinum is heavier and stronger than gold due to the density. It is also hypoallergenic — some people develop allergies from the alloys used in other metal bands. Palladium, part of the platinum group of metals, shares many of platinum’s attributes, such as its white color, strength, and durability. Since it is not quite as rare as platinum, and also not as dense, this metal is lighter and more affordable, and therefore a great choice for a wedding band. Like platinum, palladium is hypoallergenic.

WINECELLAR A F INE DEF INI T ION OF OENOPHI LE : A LOVER OR CONNOI SSEUR OF WINE .

BY TODD TUFTS

We have always been fascinated by a home wine cellar. If you are like us, you look forward to wine o’clock in the evening. Many of our clients have shown us their incredible wine cellars at home. Some are an event in and of themselves. Others are innovative uses of space you might not have

thought would be perfect for a smaller wine room. While a large wine cave is impressive and might cost many thousands of dollars to build, a small area like a closet, pantry or under a stairway can allow you to create your very own small wine cellar. We thought it would be fun to do

some research on what you need to emulate the most chic wine cellars available. While some of these suggestions are DIY projects, others might require some outside help, but here is what we’ve learned.

CL IMATE CONTROL If there is a secret to success, this is step one. Wine is delicate and doesn’t do well with big temperature and humidity fluctuations. Keeping your wine in good shape starts here. Did you know the ideal temperature is 55-58 degrees Fahrenheit? For shorter term storage of two-three years, 65-68 degrees will do fine. Whites are more delicate than reds and are much more sensitive to big temperature extremes. There are a couple options to maintain the optimal temperature and humidity in your wine cellar. Active: You can either invest in a good wine refrigerator, cooler, or cooling system. Passive: You can choose a cool, dry, dark spot for your wine cellar, away from windows or exterior walls, where the wine stays protected from exterior temperature changes year round. HUMIDI T Y CONTROL Humidity is really only an issue if you are planning to hold wines for over 15 years. You may be asking why humidity is a concern at all, since they are bottled? The answer lies with the cork. In order for it to stay in good condition and not affect the taste of the wine — since it should be touching it — a relative humidity of 50% to 75% is ideal. When the humidity is below 50%, the cork can dry out, and when the humidity is above 75%, the labels can deteriorate.

L IGHT CONTROL Ultraviolet light is one of wine’s enemies. It can prematurely age the wine. Take great care with sparkling wines and whites, as they are very light sensitive. VI BRAT ION CONTROL Reds do not like to be disturbed! Constant vibrations from a nearby fridge or dishwasher are a big no-no. RACK CONTROL Did you know that wine likes to stay horizontal? Keep your jokes to yourself. The wine should stay in contact with the cork. That’s a good thing. Store your bottles with the label facing up so that any sediment deposits can be seen while pouring. Avoid using woods like cedar within the shelving and walls, as that can affect taste. Mahogany is a favorite with those contractors in the know.

OENOPHILE. THIS TERM WAS DEVELOPED BY THE FRENCH IN THE 1800S COMBINING TWO GREEK WORDS OENO , MEANING WINE, WITH PHILE , MEANING LOVER OF.
