& H idden amongst the tapestry of American dreams, the story of Richter & Phillips exists as a humble thread. You may be familiar with the beginnings, where Mr. Richter and the three Phillips brothers started a business of catalog-clad traveling salesmen. How, as countless others, their business was booming until it weathered the storms of the Great Depression. Then, as we say, Frederick Fehr, a salesman with nothing but a pocketful of diamonds, changed it all. The company was placed in the hands of the Fehr Family. But Richter & Phillips, as you know it today, still had a long way to go. So, what happened next? LEGACY & LEGEND THE UNTOLD STORIES OF R&P

Mr. Fehr shares stories of working with his father at Richter & Phillips starting at 13 years old

In collaboration with local filmmaker Houston Raef, the story of Richter & Phillips’ journey from 1930 - present day is shared through the lens of Frederick Fehr’s legacy: his son, Fred, his grandson, Rick, and his great-grandson, Eric - current President of Richter & Phillips. From a showroom of giftware, toys, appliances, and clocks to a modest bargain shop selling products below cost, Richter & Phillips has been an everchanging business in downtown Cincinnati. The story of Richter & Phillips has periods of prosperity, moments of despair, experiences of promise, and, in a new, fast-paced world, the century-and-a-quarter-old shop has had its adaptability and relevancy put to the test. The store has played meaningful roles in countless stories of love, triumph, and life-altering moments. These stories are yours. And now it’s time to take a moment to hear the story of those Behind the Jeweler: the legend of Richter & Phillips and the family legacy that saved it.

EVENTS SPOTLIGHT

The best time is spent on you...

S ifting through photos dating back to 2017, rounding off our first year at 601 Main, I stumbled upon a photo from late November that year featuring a modest selection of top-shelf whiskies and 14 guys huddled around the latest timepieces. That number was over 232 the following year, and Whiskey & Watches has exceeded that number every year since. We charge $25 a head and still can’t keep you away! Yes, of course, those funds go 100% to Dragonfly Foundation, and, sure, $25 bucks for a couple of glasses of top-notch bourbon is a wildly good deal - but we think this is something a little bit more. Having such an incredible, enthusiastic watch community define Richter & Phillips as a social hub for all aspects of watches has been a complete honor. Whiskey & Watches was the first significant demonstration that you, our clients, are excited to be a part of a community to celebrate and explore watches. Inspired by years of great turnout, we created more personalized experiences with tailored brand events so we could fund-raise with Boomer & Breitling, Hang with Hamilton, and get lost underground with TUDOR. Putting out these invitations each time is incredibly nerve- racking; you have no idea. Internal doubts seep in: Will they come? Will they like it? Have they had enough? I mean, we are just a retail store, right? So, this year, when we kicked off the summer with a brand new Watch Fair, I was ecstatic when hundreds of feet walked through our doors, Energized by seeing eager guests choosing to spend a chill Saturday afternoon with watches and good company at R&P. Although true, it seems a tad cliché at this point to say, “We wouldn’t be here without you,” so instead, I wanted to say that you’ve given us the gift of loyalty, granting us this incredible opportunity to create new, exciting ways to play a role in this beautiful community and further connect you with the magnificence of an exceptional timepiece. Because that’s what we dream R&P to be - more than a jewelry store, a place where friends gather. So, thank you - That means the world to us.

WRISTS OF WHISKEY & WATCHES

E very watch that leaves our store is destined to tell a story. Intimately selected by the wearer for the balance it offers their personality, a watch is worn with intention. This timepiece is with you daily, experiencing the ebb & flow of life, tracking the very passage of time itself. With “Wrists,” we aim to celebrate these singular stories and share a spotlight on the individual journeys, strides, and passions that make Cincinnati a vibrant, thriving city. These are our honored Wrists of Whiskey & Watches for 2024.

BETWEEN THE PAGES OF SELF-DISCOVERY AND EMBRACING SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY, THE LOVE STORY OF CHANDA AND DEMETRIA REMINDS US THAT WHEN YOU MEET SOMEONE WHO BRINGS OUT YOUR FINEST QUALITIES, LOVE HAS A REMARKABLE WAY OF SPARKING UNPARALLELED GENEROSITY AND DEEP PERSONAL GROWTH.

beyond the salon. It’s been a part of Demetria and I’s relationship and our journey together to dedicate time, services, or whatever we can whenever we can to make a difference. That’s how Restore Cincy came to be. Demetria: About seven years ago, we started Restore Cincy as our small, independent way of improving living conditions for single parents or struggling families in our community. We invested in properties around the city, and instead of just flipping them for profit, we’ve focused on creating comfortable homes for those in need. We want to provide second chances to tenants with credit issues or unstable employment and serve as a source for information or resources if that’s what they need. We believe everyone deserves an opportunity to live in a safe and comfortable environment, and we’re passionate about making that a reality, particularly in underserved communities. Living in a fast-paced world, getting lost in your purpose can be easy. How do you find the balance of living a full life while also practicing a public-spirited mindset? Demetria: For me, it’s about finding joy in the simple things, like waking up and feeling healthy and capable of doing what I love. I think sometimes people see us and might not really know who we are or what drives us. But when they spend time with us, they realize we’re just down-to-earth folks who genuinely love life. We’ve experienced loss, so I often hear my partner say, “I’m tired; we’re doing so much.” But I remind her I’m grateful for our ability and strength to do all these things

Where did you meet?

concerts that come to Cincinnati. Many people have to leave their area for these experiences, but you can catch them all here, right in our city. Cincinnati does have everything, notably fantastic food, arts, and sports, but what is one thing that is totally Cincinnati that you feel is overlooked? Chanda: One thing that is so Cincinnati but goes under the radar is our parks and bridges. It’s so Cincinnati to walk down by the river, enjoy Smale Park, and stroll across the bridge. It’s the perfect place to admire the Cincinnati skyline. Demetria: OTR isn’t hidden, but there are many underrated spots, especially boutiques. The small shops in Cincinnati can be hidden gems. For example, on Main St. is Moreau Sewing Unlimited, Ian Moreau’s place - he’s a wonderful person! There are lots of opportunities to shop small and support local. There’s a great sense of community in Cincinnati.

Demetria: We met at a party. I saw her across the room and knew I had to meet her. I have an eye for special things, and the moment I saw her, I knew she was special. So, that evening I didn’t have my phone on me, because I like to be present. After hanging out the entire night, I asked for her phone number. She gave it to me, and I asked her to repeat it because I had to memorize it! Chanda: And she did. She got out to her car and called me right away and asked me to brunch the following day. I didn’t think too much of it, I just thought it would be a friendly brunch with someone I met last night. Right from the day we met, it felt like we were inseparable. She would call me constantly, and we spent so much time together. Then came the flowers, a daily occurrence. It was overwhelming, and I couldn’t ignore it. At first, I was a bit puzzled, wondering, “What is this?” But she made it so easy to love her that I couldn’t deny it. I realized, “Wow, I’m truly in love with this person.” And here we are today - ten years later.

What does it mean to be a part of the Cincinnati community?

What makes Cincinnati Home?

Demetria: Chanda was born and raised in Cincinnati. I am from Owensboro, Kentucky, just across the bridge a little bit. But Cincinnati just has everything. Chanda loves to travel, but I like my feet on the ground. Cincinnati is incredible because there are so many experiences you can have, from cruising the river on our boat to going to a pro sports game - you’ve got the Bengals, FCC, not to mention the incredible plays and

Chanda: I’ve been a hairstylist in Cincinnati for 30 years. This industry is special because you can play an intimate role in your client’s lives. My clients rely on me on some level, which keeps me going, even during challenging times. Interacting with the ups and downs of so many individual stories really puts into perspective all the varying levels of personal journies that are going on in our community every day. And that inspires me

DEMETRIA CHANDA &

because not everyone has that privilege. I don’t want to wake up one day when I’m 70 or 80 and regret not living life to the fullest or doing all I can to make a difference. Chanda: You truly can’t predict what tomorrow holds, and that’s why I remind myself daily to embrace life to the fullest. We prioritize the things we’re passionate about - traveling, exploring, and positively impacting the world and those in it. It’s all about spreading happiness wherever we go. So, even when exhaustion tries to creep in, I muster up the energy to get up and seize the day. And you know what? I’ve never once regretted it; every moment is a treasure waiting to be enjoyed.

WITH A PROFOUND UNDERSTANDING FOR THE INTRICATE BALANCE BETWEEN HONORING FAMILY LEGACY AND NURTURING PERSONAL PURPOSE, BRITNEY RUBY MILLER EMERGES AS AN INSPIRATIONAL LEADER GUIDING THE RUBY LEGACY TOWARDS A VIBRANT NEW CHAPTER OF REMARKABILITY.

How has your background and experience within the restaurant industry influenced your leadership style, particularly in creating a positive work environment? To me, one of the most essential leadership qualities is the ability to meet people where they are. It’s about having an empathetic, understanding heart and being an active listener. For instance, I attended culinary school not to become an expert chef but to ensure I could relate to and collaborate effectively with my culinary team. Or, my educational background in Religious Studies has always emphasized the importance of appreciating and understanding various belief systems from around the world. These experiences have been invaluable to me in my journey in the restaurant industry. A good leader can set aside their own personal beliefs and biases and truly connect with their team by saying, “I hear you, and I appreciate where you’re coming from.” This approach fosters a sense of belonging and trust among team members, which is pivotal in creating a positive and thriving work environment. Focusing on this ideology ensures genuine communication and empathy with my team and is returned with appreciation and respect. What is your take on Cincinnati’s restaurant industry? Does a place like Jeff Ruby’s even have competition? In each market we operate in, we’re driven to exceed our competition, and Cincinnati has consistently ranked at the top in terms of positive guest sentiment regarding its dining scene. It’s an exciting challenge for my managers here, with strong contenders like Sotto, Pepp & Dolores, and many other fantastic restaurants that uphold five-star standards. We believe in the philosophy that all boats rise with the tide, and Cincinnati is certainly riding high. What’s truly special is that while it’s a competitive landscape, it doesn’t feel like a cutthroat “competition.” We restaurant owners share a deep hometown pride and sense of community, fostering camaraderie among us. We’re incredibly proud of Cincinnati’s dining scene; it’s on par with, if not surpassing, culinary giants like

touch experience off-premises. Picture Jeff Ruby servers in their distinctive “costumes” serving up exquisite Alaskan King Crab, jumbo shrimp, and mouthwatering wagyu beef - all the signature offerings you’d find at a Jeff Ruby’s restaurant, now ready to be enjoyed at your own special events. It’s a niche offering, but there’s a market eagerly ready for us. Our community’s support and enthusiasm have been incredible, and we can’t wait to keep dreaming up new possibilities with you! So, Ruby’s, Sotto, etc. are highly regarded, but what’s your personal go-to hidden gem restaurant in Cincinnati?

Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles. Being part of this thriving scene is an absolute joy and a testament to the city’s culinary excellence. What values and principles lie at the heart of Jeff Ruby’s, and how do they shape the unique experience you aim to provide? I hope that people see Jeff Ruby’s as authentic and world-class, as one of the best steakhouses in America. We are family-owned and operated, committed to delivering unbeatable five-star service. But what sets Jeff Ruby’s apart is just that, Jeff Ruby. The commitment to exceptional design and ensuring each restaurant has a unique story is integral to the extraordinary Ruby experience. Our passion for the restaurant industry goes beyond just growth; it’s fueled by our genuine love for what we do. We firmly believe that the restaurant business is one of America’s most significant industries when done right. We prioritize our guests and dedicated employees while actively giving back to the communities we serve through our foundation. In essence, Jeff Ruby’s is about authenticity, excellence, family ownership, and a long-term commitment to our craft.

Easy - Hibachi Master on Beechmont Avenue. It’s an incredible dive hibachi spot.

Now, let’s get to the burning question. The one everyone is here for - What is your all-time favorite go-to Jeff Ruby order? Oh, the 80-day, dry-aged tomahawk with our Caesar salad. Our Caesar dressing is made in-house with Parmigiano-Reggiano grated over really crisp romaine with a parmesan crisp on top. And for steak, I like a really gamey, dry-aged ribeye. So, I ask for the spinalis, the rib cap. It’s a hard to get cut, but it’s the most flavorful, tender part. They call it meat candy. And I’ll also get some asparagus to balance it all out.

Speaking of passion, let’s talk Lempicka - can you tell us about its purpose and your plans for its future?

Lempicka is like my baby, and it’s an exciting new venture where we bring Jeff Ruby’s white glove experience to private events. Initially, I envisioned it as a space for high-end weddings, and while it has indeed hosted some beautiful weddings, it’s been wonderful to see its versatility. We’ve had everything from bachelorette parties to Kevin Huber’s retirement bash to various nonprofit and Fortune 500 meetings and other celebrations. We’re even gearing up for a magical Christmas Eve experience this year. (Which, as of this interview, had yet to be formally announced.) Currently, we’re in phase one, and things are going great! Phase two is where it gets even more fun. Now that hosting on-premise private events is under our belts, we’re exploring how to bring this high-class, high-

And finally, what’s the most important advice you’d like to share with young entrepreneurs?

I often get asked this and still don’t know the answer. But I think surrounding yourself with people smarter than you and keeping your ego in check is key. Understand that you can’t do it all. In my leadership journey, my first move at our home office was to bring in experts from diverse fields. For instance, Andi’s a true professional in sales, and her experience with the Convention Center is gold. The same applies to my CFO, VP of Marketing, HR Director - the list goes on. They’re the experts we need. And make sure that your team, your investors, and anyone within your circle are individuals that believe in you and empower you to take your passion to the level you aspire. Oh yeah - raise enough capital!

From there, my fascination with watches grew steadily. I began dismantling timepieces in my basement, starting with those I no longer wore, before eventually daring to disassemble the ones I cherished and even assembling one entirely from parts I ordered online. My passion for watches evolved organically, and before I knew it, I found myself with this sort of strange obsession. Then, ultimately, I got the absolutely insane idea of starting a watch brand. Now, 15 years later, I look back on a journey marked by gradual progression, from collecting and tinkering with watches to founding Cincinnati Watch Company. It’s a journey that has, in many ways, become my life’s work and greatest source of enjoyment. What’s even more enriching is the incredible community of fellow watch enthusiasts I’ve had the privilege to join.

Have you always been a watch enthusiast?

embrace our watches and appreciate our efforts is heartening. It’s remarkable how people here continue to find value in something as timeless as watches, even in a digital age where time is displayed everywhere. The support for a Cincinnati Watch Company has been unbelievable, and it’s a testament to our city’s rich culture and passion for building things. Last year, R&P released a watch with you based on your Union Terminal Collection. What is another Cincinnati staple that you would love to collaborate with for a special edition timepiece? Cincinnati has a lot of incredible architectural elements with Art Deco influence. One of the first that comes to mind is the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza, formerly Omni Netherland Plaza. There is lavish use of marble, custom nickel-silver fixtures, and stylized Egyptian and floral motifs - the place is brimming with inspiration, and I think that would make a really fantastic timepiece.

Well, as a child of the 80s, everyone wore watches. At the time, they weren’t just an interest; watches were a necessity. My first watch was a trusty Timex Ironman. However, my true passion for watches fully ignited much later. I splurged on what I considered an expensive timepiece, a couple hundred dollars, and that’s when my fascination began to evolve. In a digital age dominated by my work in data privacy consulting, watches offered a tangible, analog connection to the past. Over time, I found myself delving deeper into the world of horology, drawn to the aesthetics of these tiny machines and their rich history and intricate mechanics.

What do you find most fascinating about watches?

Wristwatches have been around for over a century, and their historical significance in keeping the world in sync is awe-inspiring. The concept of watches, these perpetual motion devices powered by our own energy, blows my mind. Whether it’s winding the crown or the movement of an automatic watch, it’s incredible how kinetic energy has played such a pivotal role in our lives, from work schedules to military coordination. The rich history of watches, spanning hundreds of years, adds a unique charm to the diverse watch styles we see today, and that’s what truly fascinates me about them. I became so captivated that I started dismantling and attempting to reassemble watches in my basement, immersing myself in their utility, history, and craftsmanship.

What would you say sets the community in Cincy apart from other cities?

It’s laid back - truly, it’s laid back and genuine. Being a watch collector in Cincinnati feels more about the passion and less about the price tag. The culture is welcoming, with discussions about why you love a particular watch and what draws you to it. It’s refreshing because what you wear on your wrist doesn’t define you here; it’s about sharing our interests and appreciating the craftsmanship and history behind these timepieces, and that’s what makes the community approachable and enjoyable.

What advice do you have for someone curious about watches but unsure how to take the first step?

Get a mechanical watch. Hands down, make your first watch mechanical and take the time to learn about it. Many people today, especially younger people, think of watches as battery-powered gadgets, not realizing the marvels of mechanically driven watches. This is living jewelry. The revelation that a whole world of intricate gears and springs lives inside a watch will spark that initial amazement and curiosity - and that’s what hooks you. So, I recommend going into a respected store to try on watches and find what you like on your wrist. But, ensuring that the first one is mechanical, even better if it has a display case back. Because for me, discovering the world of mechanical watches was like uncovering a hidden treasure, and I believe it can be just as enchanting for anyone starting their journey into horology. Also, by the way , I found and purchased the missing parts of my Zodiac from many years ago. Our watchmaker was able to fix it, and I can now relive that fantastic time in my life; watches have that sort of a pull on you!

Why do you think Cincinnati Watch Company was able to find success here in the city?

How did Cincinnati Watch Company come to be?

It all started with the first “expensive” timepiece and a dash of curiosity. My very first significant watch was a Zodiac dive watch I picked up right before my honeymoon from, believe it or not, Costco, and I thought it was crazy at the time to spend several hundreds of dollars on a watch. It accompanied me on snorkeling adventures, but unfortunately, its bezel decided to explore the ocean floor…. After enjoying my first nice watch, I started to study the history of watches, movements and began considering what I might buy as a replacement. This started my initial foray into the captivating world of horology.

Watchmaking is in Cincinnati’s blood; the city has a fascinating history in clocks and watchmaking - Gruen Watch Company being a standout example. Only a few American cities had a legacy in watchmaking. Gruen was the last watch brand to assemble watches in Cincy, ceasing operations around 1958. It wasn’t until 2020, when Jordan Ficklin, our in-house watchmaker, joined the team, that Cincinnati saw another watch brand assembling watches here. But, for us, more was needed to offer certainty in success. That Cincinnatians

MASTER THE STACK TEXTURE, TONE, & DURABILITY

To have an effortless appearance, the perfect band of bracelets requires intentional, smart tailoring that aims to create a balance between purpose and personality. Your everyday base stack should be built with quality pieces sporting an array of textures, colors, and designs.

TEXTURE Pick a spotlight texture to define your stack. A spherical, beaded design gives sleek minimalism while a roped texture has a rugged appearance.

LOW-KEY LUXE Wearing jewelry doesn’t have to be loud, especially for your basics. Opting for designers who craft with 18k gold

or incorporating black diamonds are toned-down ways to reveal in some low-key luxuries.

CRAFTSMANSHIP Quality is in the details. Research the designer you are interseted in or ask a Jewelry Specialist to share their insights on a specific design. Your go-to pieces should have a high tolerance for everyday wear, crafted with premium materials built to last. MIXED METALS This isn’t a black with navy sort of situation. Metals are all neutrals and you shouldn’t be overly concerned with mixing them. When you have a variety of metals, you’ll easily strike the perfect balance for every vibe.
