O f all the community activities supported by Roman Jewelers, the Seeing Eye affiliation is one that we look forward to every year. There is nothing like the unconditional love of a dog, especially when those warm furry friends are helping people with sight challenges to navigate the world around them. Seeing Eye is a philanthropic organization that nurtures the natural love and warmth of puppies and trains them for an important calling. It breeds and raises puppies to become seeing eye dogs. The organization also coaches blind people on the proper use, handling and care of the dogs, and even works toward the long term development of seeing eye dogs, supporting research on canine health and development. These professional fur babies need to be well bred and cared for, appropriately socialized, and expertly trained. The job of a seeing eye dog is harder than it looks. It can take years of training. Some dogs are born into the job at Seeing Eye’s 327-acre
Breeding Station campus in Chester, New Jersey. Of the 500 puppies it breeds each year, 60 percent pass the course and become guide dogs or enter the breeding program. The rest are placed with other service organizations, law enforcement, or search and rescue agencies or adopted by the public. Seeing Eye has approximately 170 staff members, with 35 full-time instructors, who work at the 62-acre Washington Valley campus in Morris Township. It’s no wonder the Seeing Eye ® dog is designated the official state dog of New Jersey! Roman Jewelers supports this noble effort by donating to Seeing Eye’s annual fundraiser auction. Not only does this allow us to support a cause dear to our hearts, it gives us the opportunity to meet some of these precious dogs in person. We firmly believe dogs are angels on earth, and we see it as an honor to help them share their love and to help others. And you can too!
