THREE DECADES OF THE HIDDEN RUBY

princess ower Beyond the anniversary collection, Princess Flower offers another example of the range that has defined Roberto Coin over the past 30 years. Inspired by a four-petal floral motif found in Venetian architecture, the collection transforms the shape into jewelry in gold, diamonds, and colorful gemstones. It is distinctly Roberto Coin: rooted in the designer’s Italian surroundings, yet interpreted in a way that feels entirely its own. After 30 years, the hidden ruby is still the one thing every Roberto Coin piece has in common. It has stayed the same size, concealed against the skin, since 1996 — a quiet constant underneath three decades of collections that never stopped changing.

Thirty years after Roberto Coin founded his namesake Maison in Vicenza, Italy, the designer returned to Venice this summer to celebrate the milestone where so much of his creative inspiration began. The occasion brought together two new High Jewelry collections, Meraviglia and Cobra, along with a look back at the ideas and designs that have shaped the house since 1996. One of the most enduring details in the Maison’s story is remarkably small. Since 1996, Roberto Coin has placed a ruby inside each piece, and it’s become the brand’s signature. The stone is deliberately concealed, hidden against the skin, meant to be discovered by the woman who wears it. It carries a wish from maker to wearer inspired by ancient beliefs associating the ruby with protection, vitality, happiness, and good fortune. After 30 years, it remains one of the most intimate details of a Roberto Coin piece. The ruby is perhaps the only constant, as everything around it has evolved over the past three decades. Roberto Coin has never relied on one defining look, instead moving between influences drawn from nature, architecture, art, and the designer’s native Italy. That willingness to keep moving has become central to the Maison’s identity. For Coin, an anniversary is a chance to ask what comes next rather than a pause to look back. “Wonder lives in change,” he said during the anniversary celebration, describing each collection as a new beginning and a new discovery.
