Espresso T H E ESPRESSO MARTINI

We Buy Diamonds, Gold & Jewelry

As fall settles in and evenings get later and colder, the espresso martini’s caffeine kick and cozy flavor profile make it feel right at home on seasonal menus. Few cocktails have made the leap from trend to staple as cleanly as the espresso martini. What started as a late-night novelty has settled into menus year-round, and it’s easy to see why: coffee, vodka, and sweetness in a single glass. Bitter, smooth, and slightly sweet, it also has a texture you don’t get from most cocktails. That thick foam that holds for a few minutes before collapsing back into the drink — giving it almost a dessert- like quality — sets it apart from a typical shaken cocktail.

The custom comes from Italy, where sambuca is traditionally served con la mosca — “with the fly” — meaning a few coffee beans dropped into the glass. When bartenders started shaking up espresso martinis, they carried this gesture over and three beans became the standard: one each for health, wealth, and happiness. There’s also an old bar superstition that says odd-numbered garnishes are considered good luck — so a two- or four-bean martini isn’t just unconventional; it’s technically bad form. Skip the beans and regulars will notice; it’s become as much a signature of the drink as the glass it’s served in.

WHY THREE BEANS?

The garnish

isn’t random.
