It quietly assures, encouraging feelings of composure, steadiness, and resilience.” The second color, Illuminating, is one of strength and positivity, she says. “Illuminating is a bright and cheerful yellow, sparkling with vivacity. It is aspirational and gives us hope. We need to feel that everything is going to get brighter.”

Likewise, the new colors released by paint companies this year are all about comfort. A new generation of saturated, restful neutrals provide a sense of sanctuary. Sherwin-Williams likes Urbane Bronze, a gray shade that is slightly darker than Pantone’s Ultimate. The company also released a light burgundy called Passionate, along with a pale apricot it describes as having overtones of “barely there pink,” like “minimally finished hardwood.”
