moment, you give your full attention to your subject. When hand-writing your thoughts, you form each sentence ahead in your mind, deliberately choosing your words and spacing them out carefully, because there is no backspace key on an ink pen. You must at least attempt to write legibly, which takes effort and care. Then there is the process of addressing and stamping the envelope, licking the seal, and walking it to the mailbox, Then as a delightful cap to the ceremony, you get to flip up the little red flag to mark the moment. Days later, your note arrives at its destination, and before the envelope is even opened, there is a somewhat subconscious appreciation of the time and attention you dedicated. Just. For. Them. The digital age is quickly making handwriting something of a lost art. Technology enables us to send a text or email in an instant. It’s convenient, yes, but a handwritten note delivers a far more personal experience. Just as sending fresh-cut flowers “just because” is an amazingly thoughtful gesture, sending a heartfelt, handwritten note can similarly make someone’s entire day! Whether you hunt down a beautiful card or just grab the closest bar napkin, it truly is the thought that counts. It doesn’t take practice or perfection to master the art of hello…just a pen.

W e’ve all experienced it — opening the mailbox and having the sight of familiar handwriting bring an immediate smile to our face. Perhaps most commonly, it’s a birthday card, but experiencing this simple joy should be more than an annual occurrence. I remember while growing

up, my mother would sit down to pen notes to friends and family almost weekly. Sometimes these were monumental greeting-card- worthy occasions, but often she was just writing a quick thank you or a

note to say hello. My sister Sue and I followed suit; we both now keep a collection of blank cards on hand. I’ve noticed the influence on my brother, as well. He is an antique dealer and often happens upon the neatest vintage notes and enjoys surprising others with them. A handwritten note is intimate and personal on both ends. The time taken to sit, think, and write creates space to reflect, and for that
