GIVING BACK

G iving back to the communities we serve has always been at the heart of Albert’s Diamond Jewelers’ business. Continuously trying to better Northwest Indiana and the Chicagoland area is something that is deeply rooted in our Albert’s mantra. Year after year, the Halpern family regularly supports organizations such as NWI Parkinsons, the Foodbank of Northwest Indiana, The Humane Society, TradeWinds Services, Service League of Northwest Indiana and most notably, their fundraising efforts for Multiple Sclerosis (MS). In June 2022, the Halpern family took their philanthropic efforts international. The family launched a fundraising campaign with the World Central Kitchen (WCK) to help the devastating hunger crisis in Ukraine. Fred and Josh pledged $100,000 of their own money to provide food to the people affected by the war. Albert’s MS auction has raised over $2.6 million through their efforts, with 100 percent of the proceeds donated to research for the disease. This charity hits close to home for the Halpern family, as Donna Halpern, the wife of Fred Halpern, has lived with MS for more than 40 years. the heart

signature hidden ruby

T he ruby has always been enveloped in a legendary aura, and due to its exceptional quality of maintaining beauty throughout time it is considered eternal, like true love. According to an ancient belief, wearing a ruby close to the skin promoted long life, health, and happiness, and even today it is believed to possess these magic powers, including the extraordinary ability of giving peace. In 1996, Roberto Coin started signing his jewels by setting a small ruby hidden on the inside of each piece, allowing the distinguished gem to kiss the skin. Since then, this tradition has become the exclusive signature of every jewel by Roberto Coin, dedicated as a secret gift of good wishes to every woman lucky enough to wear one of his exclusive creations. WITH EACH BEAUTIFUL PIECE OF ROBERTO COIN JEWELRY, FINDING THE RUBY IS USUALLY THE FIRST TASK AT HAND.

SHY CREATION REDEFINING LUXURY

With a technically innovative design, these diamond and gold Maia earrings features leaves that create an undulating effect when they move.

“O ur jewelry speaks to the woman who trusts her own fashion sense,” says Kathy Dayan, creative director of Los Angeles-based jewelry brand Shy Creation. “When I started designing, my goal was to make fine quality jewelry more wearable. I wanted to use natural diamonds in designs that women could wear every moment, designs that would move with them during their daily lives, float on their skin as part of their very being, jewels that are striking yet effortless.” Shy Creation is all about sophisticated luxury and contemporary styling, including pieces that can be mixed and matched, stacked and layered, and collected. Favorites include the Amor Heart, which has transformed the traditional heart into an edgier, more contemporary design with an elongated point. Another bestseller is the diamond-set Cuban Links series. In Kathy’s interpretation, the links lie comfortably flat on the wrist or the neck, and they come in different widths, from wide bold looks to thinner, daintier designs. The Kate collection is another favorite line, which includes the new Paperclip series of highly polished gold links interlocked with diamond pavé links. Delicate or bold, Paperclips can be combined with Cuban Links to create a rich fancy look. “Yellow gold is making a comeback,” says Kathy. “We use high-polished yellow bold gold with diamonds to create a daring yet casual look.” Shy’s latest bezel-set diamond tennis bracelets also feature bold gold highlighted with diamonds. This tapered design creates softs lines that make a woman’s wrist appear more feminine and delicate. Being fashionable is only part of Shy’s story. Not only do its jewels look beautiful from the top, but the brand also takes great care to finish the back, so that each piece feels smooth to the touch and comfortable next to the skin. Whether for casual wear or a formal occasion, Shy Creation’s attention to detail is truly luxury redefined.

BEAUTY IN BALANCE HULCHI BELLUNI

M artine Hul had a dream of creating feminine and wearable jewelery. Fueled by her beliefs in harmony and the Chinese philosophy of Feng Shui, she launched her first collection in 2001, and Hulchi Belluni was born. Hul’s 20 years of experience, united with her own distinguished style, sparkling energy, and effervescent creativity, allow her to add a unique value to every piece of jewelery she designs, guided by the principles of this traditional Chinese practice. The positive Chi energy around which Feng Shui is centered, brings harmony and balance to her designs, so that they present a visible, balanced interaction

between all five elements: wood, fire, water, earth, and metal. A Hulchi Belluni creation bubbles with lively energy (wood), it blazes and radiates power (fire), yet it is quenched by organic and wavy features (water) and makes romance (earth) overflow in peace and luxuriousness (metal). You can feel the jewels radiate Chi, the positive energy which blissfully brings balance to your body. Your love glitters and shines like a Hulchi Belluni — this jewel born out of love. If you bring all elements in your life into balance, they will radiate with positive energy; they will radiate with Chi.

Styl e meets Sparkle

F ew heritage labels excel at blending the design codes of their house with a sense of modernity that appeals across a wide range of customer tastes, but Gucci makes this challenge look effortless. Designed by creative director Alessandro Michele, Gucci’s Link to Love jewelry collection showcases the brand’s ingenuity. The 18k gold collection is not only steeped in the DNA of the brand, it’s also tailor- made for layering and customization. Fold in a variety of pieces, all of which are gender- neutral, and Link to Love is designed to be as forward-thinking as it is versatile.

The octagonal-shaped rings in Link to Love perhaps best express this idea. Available in three widths, the sculpted rings are stackable, which, along with the choices of enamel, gemstone, and diamond highlights, allow the wearer to create a look that’s decidedly personal. Embellishment options include green tourmalines, rubellites, and black enamel — colors that, when stacked, evoke Gucci’s iconic web stripes. Fashion’s popular layering trend is key to the bracelets and necklaces in the collection. Like the rings, the delicate chain designs can

be embellished with gemstones, enamel, or diamonds. Engraved with the Gucci logo, the bar pendants on Link to Love’s lariat necklaces also make a statement. Ultimately, Link to Love is a collection made to be worn and enjoyed in a highly personal way, which dovetails nicely with Alessandro Michele’s overall design aesthetic: unafraid to bend the rules, but always with an eye toward iconic Gucci style.

LAB-GROWN DIAMONDS

COMING OF AGE

C enturies ago, when alchemists dreamed of transforming lead into gold, there were also those who tried tirelessly to convert common coal into diamond. While the former can only be done at a steep cost, creating lab-grown diamonds has become a fairly refined process that is comparatively affordable. Starting in the late 1700s, scientists tried unsuccessfully to create diamonds in the lab. That changed nearly two centuries later, with the work conducted by H. Tracy Hall, a chemist working on General Electric’s Project Superpressure. After several failed attempts, he succeeded in 1954, creating the first man-made diamond. Interestingly, in those days, lab-grown diamonds cost twice as much as mined diamonds. Today, lab-grown diamonds (LGD) have come of age. A surge of LGD manufacturers and jewelry designers is now creating collections featuring not only colorless gems but also a variety of colored diamonds in affordable prices.

Star power has helped to get the LGD message out. Celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio have endorsed them, while natural diamond producer De Beers has moved into the lab-grown category with its sub-brand Lightbox Diamonds. This is seen by many as a reason to believe that the mined (natural) diamond sector can happily co-exist with the LGD sector, perhaps with each staking out its own territory. Proponents cite two major advantages of lab-grown diamonds: they are priced lower than natural diamonds; and there are claims that they are more eco-friendly than mined diamonds. There is also an argument that LGDs are conflict-free. Whatever the reason for purchasing them, one thing is clear: lab-grown diamonds offer the same characteristics and beauty as mined diamonds. They have indeed come of age.

“A BEAUTIFUL PIECE OF JEWELRY GOES BEYOND STYLE. IT SHOULD EVOKE AN EMOTION, INSPIRE CONFIDENCE, AND ACCENTUATE THE NATURAL BEAUTY OF ANY WOMAN.” – Doron Paloma, president and chief designer of Doves by Doron Paloma

Selection of jewelry from the Equestrian collection.

THE NATURAL BEAUTY OF DOVES JEWELRY D oron Paloma feels a piece of jewelry should reflect a woman’s individuality and tastes. His new Equestrian line is a chic collection of jewelry with equine-inspired symbols, from horseshoes to bridal bits and stirrups, all crafted in 18k gold, highlighted with colorful gemstones and diamonds. Doron also creates medallions, one of the most popular looks in fine jewelry right now, as part of his engaging Celestia collection. These pieces represent the signs of the zodiac and other celestial symbols, which let the wearer reach for the stars, the sun, and the moon.

BY CYNTHIA UNNINAYAR

Before becoming an award-winning jewelry designer, Doron was an award- winning architect. After spending a summer sketching designs for his family gemstone business, he discovered his talent for drawing, combined with his graphic interpretation of light, spatial relationships, and color. He went on to forge iconic and trend-setting pieces with a distinct look — a look that has garnered celebrity attention and worldwide press. Doves jewelry is regularly seen on the red carpet, and the company has made exclusive designs for First Lady Michelle Obama, Jennifer Lopez, and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

DAVID YURMAN AMERICA’S FIRST FAMILY OF JEWELRY

W hen David Yurman sculpted his first Cable bracelet with gold wire 40 years ago, he envisioned the twisted metal ropes that architect John Augustus Roebling used to suspend the Brooklyn Bridge. “That strength and simplicity grabbed me,” he once said. It’s a style Yurman also recognized in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s ancient gold torque necklaces and in DNA’s twisted structure, and even in nature’s hanging vines. Today the universal design is instantly recognizable as David Yurman’s signature. Over the past four decades, David and Sybil Yurman, the husband-and-wife team who established the brand in 1980, have leaned into the Cable motif and made it an iconic American design. It’s been reimagined in countless styles, from colorful, bold aluminum cuffs to elegant diamond engagement rings and luxurious diamond chain link necklaces. It’s the thread that defines and connects Yurman’s stylish, contemporary and classical ethos. “The Cable form is at the heart of everything we do — changing, adapting, and evolving, but always a constant,” says Evan Yurman, the founder’s 40-year-old son who was named president last year.

“THE CABLE FORM IS AT THE HEART OF EVERYTHING WE DO — CHANGING, ADAPTING, AND EVOLVING, BUT ALWAYS A CONSTANT.” — Evan Yurman, President, David Yurman

DAVID YURMAN’S NEXT GENERATION CABLE The newest evolution is Cable Edge, a wave-like pattern made in recycled silver and gold with conflict-free diamonds. The motif is based on a twisted rectangular form that echoes the undulating shapes found in modern architecture. “It’s clean, contemporary look and feel will appeal especially to people with an appreciation for art and sculpture,” says Evan. “It plays with light and angles to create an almost velvety sensation. It’s truly one of my favorite collections we have done.” Cable Edge is the company’s jewelry collection made exclusively with recycled metals and traceable diamonds, and more are in the works. By using metals that have previously been refined, the brand is reducing the demand for newly mined materials and the energy needed to process it. Cable Edge is an example of Evan’s influence on the business. Sustainability is a priority. He is also continuing his parents’ focus on infusing jewelry with a sense of timeless modernity and shares their love of architecture, art, and design. But don’t expect to see David and Sybil retire anytime soon. They still love coming into the office, designing and experimenting with new ideas, and

they remain committed to the brand they started when they were struggling artists. Growing up with a mother who paints and a father who sculpts, it’s no surprise that Evan showed an early interest in art and design. Over his two decades working in the family business, he launched men’s jewelry and bridal, high jewelry and most recently served as chief creative officer. “Having been around the business from an early age, I have great pride for our classic style and founding identity, and throughout my time working for the company, I have sought to honor those traditions of craft, product, and innovation, all the while embracing the natural evolution of David Yurman.” The close knit Yurman family all live near the company’s Tribeca headquarters, which makes it easy for Evan Yurman’s three daughters to visit. His eldest daughter Cody has already begun to tinker with jewelry. “She has her own bench in our design shop, where she has been experimenting with creating pieces,” he says. It looks like the third Yurman generation is already preparing to join the family business.

FANCY + FABULOUS

BY ANNIE DAVIDSON

W hen it comes to color, nothing shines as brilliantly as a fancy-colored diamond. Faceted diamonds reflect more light — called brilliance — than any other gem, because they are harder than any other gemstone. A colored diamond is like a neon light. The intense color is absolutely stunning. This year, they are showing up on red carpets, in engagement rings, and in very special pieces of fashion jewelry. Color in diamonds is a rare occurrence, which adds to their mystique. For every colored diamond found, there are at least 10,000 colorless ones. Pinks, blues, and greens are the rarest. Pinks are especially prized, sometimes commanding prices of up to $400,000 per carat — 20-times the price of equivalent white diamonds, due to rarity and market demand. The most readily available and accessible natural- colored diamonds are champagnes, cognacs, and yellows. They’re rare, but they’re out there, and they have the power to add a dose of maximum brilliance to your jewelry wardrobe, no matter where it takes you. F ancy DIAMONDS

WARDROBE STAPLES

BY CAROL BESLER

CURATED CLASSICS

YOUR JEWELRY WARDROBE ISN’T COMPLETE UNTIL YOU TAKE CARE OF THE BASICS

T he showcases of any great jewelry boutique are bursting with sparkling statement pieces that tantalize us with their beauty and drama. Your jewelry collection isn’t complete, however, until you stock up on the basics, the pieces that carry us gently through our everyday lives with grace and elegance and remind us of the importance of classic design. Since there are thousands of pieces to choose from at that level — and only so much showcase space — it’s important to rely on a jeweler who has an eye for choosing the best all-around basics of the moment, the classics-with-a-twist that will carry you safely through any fashion trend. These interpretations of the foundational pieces of any jewelry wardrobe are the season’s must- haves. DIAMOND NECKLACES There are few things more classic than a diamond solitaire necklace, perfect in its simplicity. This year, add a modern twist by making the diamond pear-shaped or trilliant-shaped, rather than a classic round brilliant. Or use more than one, for a diamonds-by-the-yard look. Either will work on their own or blend well with your favorite layered look — because diamonds match virtually everything.

DIAMOND STUD EARRINGS Wear them to the gym, the office or to dinner — diamond stud earrings always look like they belong. They are not only a reliable classic, they are versatile: dress them up by using sapphire or pearls instead of diamonds, or replace the classic round brilliant diamond with a pear or square cut. For even more sparkle, surround each center stone with a halo.

34 ALBERT’S DIAMOND JEWELERS MAGAZINE

PEARLS The shift toward androgyny in fashion has now permeated the jewelry world, and nowhere is the trend more evident than in pearl jewelry. With Harry Styles and other celebrity men jumping on board, the power of a simple strand of pearls has become even more universal.

LINE BRACELETS The line bracelet has been a staple of every jewelry wardrobe for decades, ever since Chrissy Evert coined the term “tennis bracelet.” Stacked with cuffs or other bracelets it adds volume but not weight. Like ear studs, it can be worn every day, everywhere, from the beach to black tie.

ANNIVERSARY BANDS

The anniversary band is a token of your ongoing commitment to your life partner, but it’s more than that: it’s a classic, everyday jewelry staple that expresses your style as much as your love. Mix it up with colored gemstones or a combination of diamonds and colored stones. Add it to your stack for extra drama. MIX IT UP Some classics are less pervasive than others, trending in cycles, but universally recognized as classics. Signet rings, engraved gold designs, amulets, and birthstone jewelry fall into this category. They are always acceptable, highly personalized, and sometimes surprising. They remain staples of any great jewelry wardrobe.

CLASSIC C artier is famous for its shaped watches. There is the Tortue (tortoise), Baignoire (bathtub) and the Crash (a car wreck), and now THE COUSSIN , named for the shape of a cushion. It’s a dazzling entry to the Cartier oeuvre. The cases are set with all white diamonds, a mix of black and white diamonds, or tsavorites and Paraiba tourmalines, arranged in a swirling spiral pattern around the bezel. The stones are cut in precise gradient sizes to fit the pattern of the swirl, and just for fun, the tsavorites are set upside down, with pavilions pointing upwards for an edgy studded look. CARTIER CREATIVE INTERPRETATIONS OF BELOVED CLASSICS AND A NEW SHAPED WATCH FOR 2022

Cartier launched three new models in its iconic SANTOS-DUMONT collection, named after Alberto Santos-Dumont, the Brazilian aviator for whom Louis Cartier designed the watch in 1904. There’s a platinum model with a burgundy bezel, an 18k gold model with a beige bezel, and a steel model with a black bezel. The bezels are coated with a thin layer of lacquer and then polished by hand, which brings out the depth and brilliance of the colors.

THE PASHA is arguably Cartier’s most daring design, and as such, it is open to some of the most interesting variations of all Cartier collections. This year we’ll see several new versions: one with a decorative, removable grid over the dial, inspired by a Cartier design from 1943; a version with charms that dangle from the signature crown cover; two complications, including a moonphase and a flying tourbillon; and a skeletonized version that uses the numerals as part of the bridge. THIS IS CARTIER CREATIVITY IN FULL SWING.

THE TANK LOUIS CARTIER collection is getting the kodachrome treatment this year with new dials in red, gray, and deep black. The red and black dials are lacquered, and the gray dial has a galvanized finish. There are also some refinements to the classic design: instead of 12 Roman numerals, the new model has only four (XII, III, VI, and IX), and the railroad track index is gone. Altogether, these new models represent a shiny, sleek new look for one of Cartier’s most beloved

Wings of Hope provides preventive care, such as vaccinations, healthy baby checks, and medicines, as well as sometimes transporting patients to receive medical care elsewhere or flying medical equipment and volunteer surgeons to remote areas to set up surgical units. Last year, 350 volunteers gave their time to Wings of Hope, which has been nominated twice for a Nobel Peace Prize. Fuel costs are covered by donations, and sometimes donations come in the form of aircraft. “As part of our mission to bring change for the better, we often collaborate with inspirational agencies that share a common vision,” says VJ Geronimo, CEO of Oris North America. “Change comes when we work together.” Oris is making two models to help support the endeavor, both based on the signature Big Crown pilot’s watch, powered by Oris’s high-performance automatic movement, caliber 401, with a five-day power reserve. MODERN RE-INTERPRETATION OF THE 1965 DIVER’S WATCH In 1965, Seiko introduced its and Japan’s first-ever diver’s watch. It incorporated an automatic mechanical caliber and delivered a then extraordinary 150-meter water resistance. The watch was designed for maximum reliability and legibility in the harshest conditions and was used by the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition from 1966 to 1969. Today, in commemoration of this Diver’s legacy, the landmark 1965 design has also been re-interpreted with contemporary styling, upgraded materials, and the 24-jewel 6R35 mechanical movement with a remarkable 70-hour power reserve. The Save the Ocean Special Edition honors the legacy of the original 1965 model featuring a deep blue patterned dial recalling the textures and colors of glacial ice in the polar regions where the history of Seiko diver’s watches began.

Joining the collection this year, the new Special Edition has a light blue dial with a darker blue bezel evoking the magnificent landscape of Antarctica.

AN ICON RE-IMAGINED The 1970 Seiko Ref. 6105 was one of the most memorable timepieces of its era thanks to its exceptional strength and unique design. The iconic diver’s watch featured an asymmetrical case made with a wide, flowing design to protect the crown at the 4 o’clock position. Offering the same distinctive case shape and crown protector, this case design is now presented in a new Save the Ocean Special Edition with a silvery white dial capturing the glacial seascape of the Arctic encountered by Japanese adventurer Naomi Uemura who used the original model during his explorations.

details

I t takes hours and hours of design and craftsmanship to create a piece of jewelry, and with today’s “more is more” styling, each subtle detail plays an important role in the overall composition of each amazing ring.

AS YOU STROLL THROUGH OUR STORE AND GAZE AT THE HUGE SELECTION OF ENGAGEMENT RINGS, YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW HOW MUCH TIME GOES INTO CREATING EVERY BEAUTIFUL RING.

PRONGS You’ve heard the term “gold standard,” and when it comes to prongs that hold significant diamonds and gemstones, the standard is, in fact, gold — karat gold is the most widely used precious metal. The alloyed mix of complimentary metals with pure gold gives karat gold magnificent strength and durability. Although gold does tend to wear down over time, a little maintenance can go a long way to maintaining its longevity. We recommend coming in annually to get your rings cleaned and the prongs checked. It’s a free service and the best way to guard against losing a stone from its setting, securing your ring for generations to come.

FACETS Of the 4Cs, cut (and facet arrangement) is arguably the most important. A well-cut diamond maximizes the reflection of light, enabling the facets to act as tiny mirrors that bounce light back, creating a spectacular sparkle and shine! Facet arrangement varies by shape, but no matter which cut you choose, each facet has an important job to do. The most common diamond, the round brilliant, contains 58 different facets, with the crown (the top of the diamond) and the pavilion (the bottom of the diamond) having the most effect on the light show we witness from above.

PAVÉ Who doesn’t want more sparkle and shine for less? Pavé — French for paving — gives you all that sparkle and shine without spending the big bucks. In these settings, smaller diamonds accentuate the larger diamond by creating a field of sparkle. In many of these rings, the gold between each stone is barely visible, further enhancing the look of the entire piece.

THE DIAMOND INSPIRES THE DESIGN RAHAMINOV DIAMONDS

F or more than 80 years, family- owned and operated Rahaminov Diamonds has been a trusted name for beautifully cut rare diamonds. Rahaminov Diamonds has always been about love and family. It started in the 1940s when the Rahaminov brothers became diamond cutters in one of Israel’s first diamond cooperatives, Buchara Diamonds. Their name soon became synonymous with diamond cutting, sales, trading, and, above all, quality. By the next decade, the band of brothers expanded, opening the first

jewelry, with Tamara as the design visionary and Amir running the business side of things. Tamara’s designs have received critical acclaim, including the prestigious 2016 Grand Prize JCK Jewelers’ Choice Award for her dazzling Rosé ring. The couple has worked side by side for over 30 illustrious years. COLLECTIONS FROM RAHAMINOV DIAMONDS FEATURE BOTH METICULOUS AND UNUSUAL CUTS THAT ARE EXPERTLY FACETED TO HIGHLIGHT AND ENHANCE EACH DIAMOND’S SHAPE. Today, Amir and Tamara’s daughters, Nicol and Melanie Goldfiner, have joined the family business, adding their knowledge and modern sensibilities to the Rahaminov brand. Nicol now works alongside her mother on the creative side of the business, while Melanie handles all-things business-related, working closely with her father, Amir. Together, the sisters have created a harmonious partnership, much like that of their parents — built on talent and love.

By the 1980s, Tamara Rahaminov, the daughter of Moshe, one of the original brothers, had come of age in the diamond industry and followed in her family’s footsteps. While studying at the Gemological Institute of America, she met her husband, Amir Goldfiner. Together, they opened the Los Angeles location, which has grown into a luxury brand of exquisite diamond
