Greetings to all our friends and clients,

Welcome to our second edition of the R.F. Moeller Jeweler Magazine . 2020 has been a year that none of us will soon forget. Although challenging, it has given us all a chance to examine our lives and, perhaps, our priorities. It has taught us to slow down, look around, and be grateful for the many things that we may have taken for granted. For nearly 70 years, our family and the R.F. Moeller Jeweler team have never taken our friends and clients for granted. We have been living our mission to be Minnesota’s premier jeweler by having the most qualified staff, the finest inventory, and most importantly, the desire to continually exceed your expectations. We carry on the legacy of Robert and Bernice Moeller and continue to bring joy through exceptional experience, quality, and service. This year, more than any other, is a time to celebrate your important milestones with the ones you love. Of course, it takes world-class talent and a dedicated team of goldsmiths, watchmakers, appraisers, jewelers, and gemologists to carry out our mission. Without these talented people, none of this would be possible. Take a moment to read about our repair and design experts highlighted on page 32. We invite you to take a few moments to browse our magazine. It showcases our passion to provide beautiful pieces of jewelry and fine timepieces from the most recognized brands and artisans in the world. You will see what our in-house designers can create using state-of- the-art tools like Computer Aided Design to take your ideas and transform them into your next family heirloom. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the magazine. We look forward to celebrating your milestones and to being your jeweler for generations to come!

With gratitude,

The Moeller Family

THE BLACK BAY 58 NAVY BLUE REVISITS TUDOR’S 1960S-ERA MILITARY-GRADE DIVE WATCHES

udor has surged in popularity since it returned to the U.S. market in 2013, with vintage pieces in demand and new models that appeal to avid collectors. The latest is a long-awaited all-blue version of Tudor’s highly sought-after Black Bay Fifty-Eight. The BB58, as enthusiasts call it, is so-named because Tudor’s first dive watches debuted in 1958. Although models in the modern collection, which launched in 2018, have black dials, this new offering is inspired specifically by a series with blue dials, introduced in 1969. At that time, Tudor was making professional dive watches for the Marine Nationale — the French Navy — built to true military-issue standards. Like the original black-dialed BB58, the new blue version has a 39 mm steel case, an authentic size if you want to stay true to the vintage style. Watches made in the 1950s were smaller than the typical 42 mm+ sizes of more recent times and constitute a growing preference of the moment. The domed crystal is another pure vintage touch. T

THE LONG-AWAITED ALL-BLUE VERSION OF TUDOR’S HIGHLY SOUGHT-AFTER BLACK BAY FIFTY-EIGHT

The snowflake hands have been a feature of Tudor diver’s watches since 1969. They were designed for high readability, and today that feature is enhanced even more by the application of Super-LumiNova to the hands and the applied markers, making them glow underwater and in other dark conditions. The watch is water-resistant to 200 meters (660 feet). The BB58 Navy Blue contains the in-house automatic MT5402 movement, with a silicon balance spring and an adjustable balance. It is COSC certified, which means it is an official chronometer, accurate to within -2 and +4 seconds per day. With a 70-hour power reserve, the BB58 is weekend-proof: you can take it off on Friday and put it back on your wrist on Monday without having to wind and reset it. The strap selection is appropriately sporty. It’s available on a blue jacquard fabric strap, a blue synthetic soft touch strap that hugs the wrist like a soft flannel sheet, or on the brand’s iconic riveted steel bracelet. The bezel cover, made of anodized aluminum, is also blue. Tudor is now offering a five-year warranty on all its watches sold after January 1, 2020, a guarantee that does not require the watch to be registered and is transferable. All Tudor products purchased between July 1, 2018, and December 31, 2019,
can get an 18-month extension to their warranty.

Forevermark diamonds represent the top one percent of diamonds in the world in terms of beauty, quality, and rarity. Living up to that statement is no easy feat. They come from places, including South Africa, Botswana, Canada, and Namibia, where extracting, sorting, and cutting and polishing them have been proven to benefit local communities. Throughout their journey from rough to polished diamonds, particular care is taken to ensure responsible business practices, support for the advancement of women, and protection of the natural world, which is the ultimate source of natural diamonds. Particular care is also taken to ensure that nothing but the best diamonds make their way into the Forevermark assortment. Each diamond is individually selected according to rigid criteria. WHAT IT TAKES TO MAKE THE

WORLD’S MOST RELIABLE

SPORTS WATCHES

AHISTORYOFROLEX ADVENTURE WATCHES AND THE MATERIALS THAT MAKE THEM GREAT

Rolex is the original action watch and has long been associated with adventure. Rolex watches have survived the most extreme conditions, from the highest summits to the deepest recesses of the ocean. Climb Mount Everest? Check. Submerge into the depths of the Mariana Trench? Check. The world of Rolex is a world that calls for robust watches — even fictional worlds have touted the watch — the original James Bond timepiece was a Rolex. Since it was founded in 1905, the company has filed over 500 patents. It is credited with inventing the world’s first waterproof wristwatch and the world’s first self-winding mechanism, the perpetual rotor. First came the water resistance. The Oyster Perpetual collection, with hermetically sealed cases, was built on the success of the original Oyster model, patented by Rolex and launched in 1926. As the maker of the world’s first waterproof wristwatch, Rolex played a pioneering role in the development of the modern timepiece. In 1927, it was worn by British swimmer Mercedes Gleitze during her historic swim across the English Channel. The swim lasted over 10 hours, and the watch remained in perfect working order. In 1931, Rolex invented and patented the world’s first self-winding mechanism with a Perpetual rotor, which is today at the heart of every modern automatic watch. The first expedition to fly over Everest, in 1933, was equipped with Rolex Oysters, and 20 years later, Sir John Hunt’s expedition, in which Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the summit of Mount Everest, was equipped with Oyster Perpetuals. In 1960, the experimental bathyscaphe, the Trieste, successfully descended into the Mariana Trench, the deepest known depression on the Earth’s surface. Emerging from 10,916 meters (37,800 feet), the bathyscaphe was in perfect working order — as was the Rolex Deep Sea Special experimental watch that had been attached to the outside during the historic dive.

16 ] R . F . M O E L L E R M A G A Z I N E

HERE ARE SOME OF THE EXCLUSIVE MATERIALS THAT GO INTO A ROLEX WATCH: OYSTERSTEEL : This is 904L grade steel, a superalloy used in the aerospace and chemical industries, and that means it has the corrosion resistance and high polish of precious metals. It also has a high sheen, so it looks good for a long time. EVEROSE GOLD: To preserve the beauty of its pink gold watches, in 2005 Rolex created and patented a new alloy that it casts in its own foundry: Everose gold, which owes its unique color — a pink hue unlike any other — to its composition. PLATINUM: Rolex uses 950 platinum, an alloy consisting of 95 percent pure platinum generally combined with ruthenium. At Rolex, platinum is above all used for the Day-Date, the most prestigious watch in the Oyster collection. The practiced eye immediately recognizes a Day-Date or Daytona with an ice blue dial as a platinum model.

Day-Date 40 mm, in platinum.

ROLESOR: Rolesor is the story of the auspicious meeting of two materials on a single Rolex watch: the juxtaposition of gold and steel with their contrasting colors and radiance, in subtly balanced harmony. The name Rolesor was patented by Rolex in 1933, and has become one of the distinctive elements of the brand’s watches, a true Rolex signature. The bezel, winding crown, and center bracelet links are made of 18k yellow or Everose gold, and the middle case and the outer links of the bracelet are made of Oystersteel. CERACHROM: Developed and patented by Rolex, these components are made from particularly hard ceramics that are virtually impervious to scratches. Their colors are unaffected by ultraviolet rays. Thanks to its chemical composition, the high-tech ceramic cannot corrode. CHROMALIGHT: Rolex’s luminescent material, Chromalight is blue by night, bright white by day, providing high visibility in dark environments.

ROLEX’S EXCEPTIONAL BRACELETS INCLUDE:

JUBILEE BRACELET: The supple five-piece links on dressy watches and some sport watches, such as the GMT-Master II. It was originally designed for the Datejust in 1945.

OYSTER BRACELET: The larger, flat, three-piece links make for a simpler, sportier look. PRESIDENT BRACELET: The President uses semi-circular three-piece links, originally created in 1956 for the Day-Date. It is always made of carefully selected precious metals. OYSTERFLEX BRACELET: Made of a very soft, flexible elastomer with an internal cushion system that makes it extremely well fitting and comfortable. The bracelet is fitted over a metal blade made of a titanium and nickel alloy, achieving the strength of metal and the comfort of rubber.

GMT-Master II 40 mm, known as the “Pepsi” in Oystersteel with Jubilee bracelet.

ROLEX ICONIC MODELS TIMELINE:

1945: The Datejust, the first selfwinding wrist chronometer to indicate the date in a window on the dial. 1953: The Submariner, the first diver’s watch waterproof to a depth of 100 meters (330 feet). Its rotatable bezel allows divers to read their immersion time. 1953: The Oyster Perpetual Explorer was launched in 1953 to celebrate the victorious ascent of Mount Everest. 1955: The GMT-Master, with its famous two-color bezel. 1956: The Day-Date, with its now-iconic President bracelet. 1956: The Oyster Perpetual Milgauss was created to meet the demands of the scientific community. It remains capable of withstanding magnetic fields of up to 1,000 gauss. 1963: The Cosmograph Daytona quickly became the ultimate tool for endurance racing drivers.

JOHN HARDY

APPLIES ANCIENT CRAFTSMANSHIP

TO MODERN JEWELRY John Hardy is celebrating a black and white palette with a splash of gold in a collection of statement pieces this season within the Classic Chain collection. The striking feature of these pieces is the dramatic hammered finish on the metal surface, which evokes the elusive play of shadow and light. The finishing on the pieces combines the union of three signature John Hardy techniques: lava pavé setting, Classic Chain motif, and hand-hammered metals using the Palu technique.

R . F . M O E L L E R M A G A Z I N E [ 27

The lava pavé setting is inspired by Bali’s sinuous lava flows. It showcases an artistic curation of cuts, shapes, sizes, and exotic gradients that evoke the raw power of nature. Palu is the time-honored Balinese art of hand- hammering metal to produce a lustrous textured surface. Traditionally performed by Balinese artisans, the metal is heated and hammered to produce small dips within the metal that catch and refract light. The surface treatment was originally inspired by the sailboats in Bali, an example of the influence of local culture on the John Hardy collection.

All John Hardy pieces are finished by local artisans in either Bangkok or at the company’s design studio and workshop in Bali using a hand- crafting process that requires tremendous strength and skill that has been mastered by only a select few artisans. The designers, carvers, and goldsmiths are all highly talented and come from a long tradition of jewelry making; many of their ancestors designed for Indonesian royals throughout the past centuries. From pendants and rings to bold bracelets and transformable earrings, the hammered Classic Chain collection is the perfect modern interpretation of traditional jewelry making techniques.

H E L P S A R T I S T S S H A R E T H E I R C R E A T I V E L E G A C I E S ROLEX MENTOR AND PROTÉGÉ ARTS INITIATIVE M Many people, including collectors and aficionados, consider a Rolex watch to be a work of art, but what may be less known is that when you buy a Rolex, you are also making a contribution to global culture. Rolex founded the Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative in 2002, and since then has paired 54 of the world’s greatest artists with younger artists of exceptional promise and talent from around the globe. The purpose of the initiative is to ensure the world’s artistic heritage is passed on by pairing young artists with established artistic masters and funding them for two years of one-to-one collaboration. At the heart of the process is an exchange of talent, much like the transmission of traditional watchmaking skills from master to apprentice. Rolex has paired artists in dance, film, literature, music, theatre, visual arts, and architecture. A system of grants and honorariums supports both mentors and protégés during each term of collaboration. The 2020/2021 pairs include:

Composer and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda will work with 28-year-old Argentinian director, screenwriter and cinematographer Agustina San Martin, who won a Special Mention Jury Prize for Best Short Film at the 72nd Cannes Festival for Monster God (2019).

30 ] R . F . M O E L L E R M A G A Z I N E

Visual artist Carrie Mae Weems, who will mentor 35-year-old Camila Rodriguez Triana of Colombia, whose work has been exhibited in shows in South America and Europe.

To choose the participants of the program, Rolex assembles an advisory board comprised of experts qualified to identify talented young artists from their worldwide network of contacts who meet each mentor’s profile for a protégé. To ensure impartiality, panel members remain anonymous during the selection period. The goal for Rolex is to make a contribution to global culture and to encourage an enriching dialogue between generations of artists. The program gives young artists the opportunity to benefit from the two years of guidance and inspiration of working with an artistic master in their field. Protégés over the years have commented that the experience of being mentored deepens their knowledge of their artistic discipline and boosts their confidence, profile and connections with other people in the arts. Mentors have also benefited from the relationship. It gives them an opportunity to see their art through younger eyes and refresh their own outlook on their discipline. Rolex

asks its mentors and protégés to interact for at least six weeks during the mentoring period, which takes place over two years. Most pairs spend considerably more time together. Some of the alliances have resulted in serious collaborations, leading to performances and works of art. “We at Rolex have been privileged that, for nearly two decades, dozens of the most genre-defining artists have lent their time and expertise to the Arts Initiative,” says Rebecca Irvin, program director. “The four new mentors who join the initiative’s community of creative greats have broken new ground in their respective fields, and we look forward to the impact they will have on their protégés, as they pass on their devotion to their arts in this cross-generational exchange.” At the end of the mentoring period, Rolex will invite the participants and guests to honor the achievements of the mentors and protégés at a public weekend of celebrations.

British director Phyllida Lloyd, who will mentor 33-year- old Whitney White, an accomplished director, musician/ composer and actress.

Filmmaker Spike Lee, who will mentor his chosen protégé, 33-year-old Kyle Bell, an American filmmaker whose work includes the Heartland Emmy-winning documentary show Osiyo: Voices of the Cherokee People.

ecause gemstones are created by nature, people have always believed they have a special energy and mystical properties. Belief in gem powers has existed for nearly 5,000 years. Depending on the era and the civilization, colored stones have been associated with wealth, power, love, safety, and wellbeing. Some people think gem lore is silly — how could a simple rock have such power? I would argue that wearing a beautiful gemstone has the power to promote

emotional wellbeing and strength just by making you feel beautiful and powerful. Gemstones allow us to illuminate our individual spirits and express our sense of style. Everyone responds to color, and each hue works its own special, secret magic. From amethyst and garnet to the finest rubies and emeralds, jewelry designers are constantly finding new ways of conveying that power. Here are some recent examples and a glimpse into the special magic of gem colors.

RED IS THE COLOR OF LOVE. IT RADIATES WARMTH AND PRODUCES A STRONG SENSE OF VITALITY. TWO MAGICAL ELEMENTS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH THE SYMBOLISM OF THIS COLOR: FIRE AND BLOOD, IMPLYING WARMTH AND LIFE FOR HUMANKIND.

GARNET: In centuries past, garnets were thought to light up the night and offer protection from nightmares. Travelers carried them to protect against misfortune when far from home. Garnet is brilliant, durable, and available in a broad price range, either as an accent stone or the center of attention. It is the January birthstone.

THE COLORS YOU SURROUND YOURSELF WITH EVERY DAY HAVE A POWERFUL ENERGY THAT GOES BEYOND STYLE AND SELF-EXPRESSION

RUBY: Like no other gemstone, the ruby is the perfect way to express powerful feelings. Ruby symbolizes bravery, determination, and passionate energy. A ring set with a precious ruby is a celebration of love, which makes everything else possible. It is also the July birthstone and the gem of the 40th anniversary.

ROBERTO COIN’S MAGICAL RUBY Sometimes it is the spiritual side of a thing that counts. That is the philosophy behind the hidden ruby in each Roberto Coin jewelry creation. Since he started his eponymous brand in 1996, Roberto has become known as the creator of many of the most interesting trends in the jewelry world, not only in his native Italy but also the United States. His quirky yet elegant style, combined with the highest standards of craftsmanship and his winning personality and warmth, have brought him loyal admirers

from around the world. As a designer interested in the mystical, inspirational powers of gemstones, Roberto has long signed each of his pieces with a small ruby set inside the jewelry in direct contact with the skin of the wearer. This magical signature represents the message of good wishes that Roberto Coin dedicates to his passionate clientele.

BLUE IS A UNIVERSALLY FAVORITE COLOR. IT IS COOLING AND SOOTHING, AND IT IS SAID TO INSPIRE WISDOM AND CLARITY. SOFT BLUES ARE THOUGHT TO CALM THE MIND AND AID CONCENTRATION.

AQUAMARINE: The color of the sea on a warm tropical holiday or a cool iceberg in the Antarctic, aquamarine is the color of earth’s life-giving forces and surely one of the cheeriest in the gemstone palette. It was believed to have originated in the treasure chests of fabulous mermaids, who doled it out to protect their favorite sailors.

SAPPHIRE: A gift of sapphire symbolizes a pledge of trust, loyalty, and sincerity. It is from this tradition that sapphire has long been a popular choice for engagement rings. The gift of sapphire is a pledge to keep promises. It is also the birthstone of September.

GREEN TOURMALINE: Tourmaline is a relatively modern gemstone, reaching wide popularity only in the 1970s. It is said to have special healing properties and the ability to release a wholesome energy to all parts of the body, enhancing courage, strength, and stamina.

GREEN IS KNOWN TO INSPIRE HARMONY AND BALANCE BECAUSE IT IS IN THE CENTER OF THE SPECTRUM. GREEN EXPRESSES FREEDOM AND GOOD NATURE, AND GREEN GEMSTONES ARE CONSIDERED TO BE BOTH ENERGIZING AND REASSURING.

EMERALD: The ancient Egyptians believed emerald represented fertility and rebirth, as well as hope and loyalty. It was associated with the Greek goddess Venus, who represented love and beauty, and in several cultures as diverse as Chinese and Irish, it has long represented good luck.

TANZANITE: The deep purple of Tanzanite makes it one of the most elegant gemstones on earth. It is associated with the power of communication and with a vibrational energy that invites protection and safety. Tanzanite is relatively rare and sometimes costly, found in only one place in the world, the Merelani Hills in Tanzania, East Africa.

AMETHYST: In addition to bringing peace, happiness, and emotional well-being, amethyst is credited with the power to enhance your intuition and psychic powers, resulting in good fortune. It was also believed to protect you from snake bites and evil spirits. Amethyst is readily available in large sizes, so it is not unusual to see it as the center stone in bold cocktail rings — the perfect gift for a fifth wedding anniversary or a February birthday.

PURPLE HAS AN AURA OF MYSTERY AND INTRIGUE, BUT ALSO OF AUTHENTICITY AND TRUTH. IT IS SAID TO ENCOURAGE DEEP CONTEMPLATION OR MEDITATION AND LEAD TO A HIGHER LEVEL OF THOUGHT. PURPLE HAS LONG BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH ROYALTY AND HAS COME TO REPRESENT QUALITY AND LUXURY.

PINK SYMBOLIZES UNCONDITIONAL LOVE AND THE FRESHNESS OF YOUTH. IT IS THE COLOR OF ROMANCE, WARMTH, AFFECTION, AND TRANQUILITY. MORE SOOTHING THAN STIMULATING, PINK REPRESENTS THE FEMININE PRINCIPLE, REPRODUCTION, AND THE SURVIVAL OF THE SPECIES.

reviously owned jewelry is a joy to own on so many levels. It can round out your collection with styles that are no longer being made. It can add some vintage flair to your wardrobe or infuse it with modern pieces that need a new home. You might even be looking for that special item to serve as the “something old” in your bridal ensemble. Many estate finds are unique, with elements such as old mine cut diamonds, romantic filigree designs, and period style characteristics that make them stand

apart from more modern pieces. Some are signed pieces from elite jewelry houses like Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels, and others are simply fine examples of jewelry from various eras by unknown makers. There are distinctions to be made between estate, antique, and vintage, as well as demarcations between periods, including Art Deco, Art Nouveau, and Retro. ESTATE simply means the jewelry has had a previous owner. Pre-owned jewelry could be from any era; it could be antique

or close to brand-new. The word estate has its origins from a time when pre-owned jewelry was part of an estate, implying the previous owner is deceased. Now it simply means pre-owned. ANTIQUE jewelry refers to pieces that are over 100 years old. Some antique jewelry is made to extremely high standards, crafted at a time when generally only the very wealthy could buy jewelry. Other pieces are quite delicate and in need of restoration if they are to be worn safely.

When jewelry is between 50 and 100 years old, it is classified as VINTAGE . For example, jewelry from the ’60s and early ’70s is now considered vintage. ART DECO remains the most enduring design period in estate jewelry, a market favorite for its timeless qualities. It is recognized for its mix of bold colors, geometric forms, and diverse materials. Diamonds were very popular in the period, often combined with rubies, sapphires, and emeralds. The use of black onyx contrasted with white diamonds and rock crystal is another

defining characteristic. Cartier, Tiffany, and Van Cleef & Arpels are considered to have created some of their most iconic work during the Art Deco period. ART NOUVEAU is more decorative. It is all about flowing curves, often with floral, leaf, and scrolling vine motifs. Other common motifs include dragonflies, peacocks, snakes, and the female silhouette. Rene Lalique and Louis Comfort Tiffany were major designers of Art Nouveau jewelry. Art Nouveau flourished between 1880 and 1914, which qualifies much of it as

antique, whereas Art Deco emerged later, in 1920, lasting until about 1940. An overlapping style, RETRO jewelry refers to pieces created in the late 1930s and 1940s that are a little more futuristic looking than traditional Art Deco. Makers experimented with different gold alloys and combined both Art Deco and Art Nouveau motifs. The world of estate jewelry is vast and varied and full of pleasant surprises. It is full of possibilities for great ways to boost your jewelry wardrobe.

YELLOW DIAMOND DELIGHTS NATURAL COLORED DIAMONDS ARE RARE AND UNIQUE

Natural fancy intense yellow diamonds are rare: for every colored diamond found, including fancy blue and pinks, there are at least 10,000 colorless ones. Yellow color in diamonds becomes noticeable to most people around grade M (the color scale for diamonds runs from D colorless to Z). When the color is very intense, it is classified as a fancy colored diamond. For fancy colored diamonds, the deeper, purer, and more saturated colors are usually the rarest, most costly, and most desirable. Yellow diamonds are particularly beautiful because of the natural brilliance of diamonds combined with the radiance of the color. Diamonds are the hardest of all gemstones and, therefore, reflect light with a brilliance that outshines all other gemstones. Colored diamonds have emerged as a favorite gemstone because of this unique glow. And because they are so rare, they make a unique style statement when set in jewelry.

Yellow diamonds are a favorite both on the red carpet and as engagement rings. Celebrities, including Jennifer Lopez, January Jones, and Kim Kardashian have all worn big yellow diamonds. Even Elton John is reported to be the owner of a 25-carat yellow diamond ring. Yellow diamonds work well in vintage designs, too, where they sparkle with a special brilliance that adds character and substance to classic Art Deco or Art Nouveau designs.
