REST + RELAXATION
By Gary Wollenhaupt
You may be one of the 25 to 30 percent of American adults who suffer from insomnia. Men start out with a higher rate of sleep issues, but women catch up to them by around age 50. Noise, or lack thereof, contributes to trouble falling and staying asleep. It’s about more than masking sudden noises like a dog barking or a far-off siren. It’s about stimulating your Sublim e Sl eeee p

Best Noise for Sleep The good news is that it’s fairly easy to test which noise is best for you. Try falling asleep to the sound of a running fan in the bedroom. The next night, play the sounds of waves crashing against the shore to test brown noise to get a feel for which might work better for you. There are many phone apps that let you choose from a wide variety of options. Tips for Sleeping With Noises Use low volume. You could keep yourself awake if it’s too loud. Set a timer so sounds don’t play all night. Many apps have timers for this reason. Try it out. Experiment with different noise types (there are others, including pink and blue) to see which helps you more. sensory system with the right kind of noise for you. There’s a fine line between too much noise and too little as you fall asleep. It’s hard to block out loud noises, but too little noise and your brain latches on to every distraction. You need the right kind of aural stimulation to put you in productive sleep mode. The question becomes, white noise or brown noise? Studies have shown that listening to specific frequencies can improve sleep quality and reduce the time it takes to fall asleep. Playing gentle and relaxing sounds can help cover abrupt noises that would otherwise wake you.
White Noise is a combination of all audio frequencies that humans can hear, which blend into a high-pitched, staticky sound. You’ve heard it in sounds like TV or radio static, the whir of a fan or vacuum, or a noisy air conditioner. Brown Noise features low-frequency sounds and bypasses the high-frequency sounds. It’s deeper with more bass tone and less hiss than white noise. Brown noise includes sounds like rainfall or a shower with strong water pressure.
OFTEN, IT’S NOT THE NOISE ITSELF BUT RATHER THE SUDDEN CHANGE IN NOISE THAT’S LIKELY TO INTERRUPT YOUR SLUMBER. THAT’S WHERE WHITE AND BROWN NOISE CAN HELP.

A BIG TURNOFF
A bout 60% of people say they’re addicted to their phones. Are you one of them? Constant connection can sap your quality of life and overload your senses. It could be time for a digital detox. Taking time away from screens can help rejuvenate your mental and physical health. You’ll feel new energy for your relationships and the things you used to love to do. Here are four reasons a digital detox is worthwhile and a few tips to get started.
TIME FOR A
Digital
By Gary Wollenhaupt Detox
The Benefits of a Digital Detox
How to Start Your Detox Mindfulness. Ask yourself why you’re using your phone. Are you bored? Afraid of missing out? Stressed with work? Examine your emotions to understand why you turn to your phone. Schedule a break. If you suspect you’re addicted, set an alarm for 15-30 minutes and put your phone down. Make the breaks longer over time. Substitute a habit. Instead of picking up your phone, fill the urge with something else.
Believe in yourself. Carefully curated lifestyles on social media lead you to compare yourself with others. It’s easy to forget the flawless model has a team of makeup artists just off camera. Don’t let that affect how you see yourself. Spending less time in that fantasy world can boost your self- esteem. Get healthier. Staying glued to your smartphone for several hours can lead to eye strain, dry eyes, blurry vision, teary eyes, and headaches. It can also rob you of sleep by delaying the release of melatonin. If possible, stop looking at your device an hour before bed, and even better, don’t take it to the bedroom with you.
Target the problem. Restrict or eliminate specific issues, like a social media app or game. You may decide on a total fast for a day or a week or focus on a specific detox, such as social media. Let friends and family know so that they can help and support you.
Feel content. Experiments have found that scheduling a break from digital devices can lower your stress levels. It can also help you focus on the present and pay more attention to things around you rather than giving in to FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). Be focused. Scrolling through your favorite social media sites or deep diving into Wikipedia can consume time otherwise devoted to your responsibilities. Set your phone aside to focus on things you want to get done while feeling less hectic.
NO MATTER HOW YOU TACKLE YOUR DETOX,
YOU’RE CERTAIN TO FEEL REJUVENATED, AND WHO KNOWS, MAYBE YOU’LL PICK UP A NEW HOBBY IN THE PROCESS!

Whether one considers the precious perpetual calendars — classic Grand Complications par
CALENDARS Patek Philippe excellence — or the ingenious Annual Calendar, which the manufacture patented in 1996, Patek Philippe offers a wide range of calendar watches distinguished by their exterior features and their particular display mode.
Annual Calendar Reference 5396G-017
With its double day/month aperture at 12 o’clock, date aperture at 6 o’clock, and subsidiary 24-hour dial incorporating a moon-phase display, the men’s Annual Calendar Reference 5396, launched in 2006, has established itself as a firm favorite. Patek Philippe is now bringing out a new version in 18 karat white gold. The 38.5 mm white gold case (11.2 mm thick) features a blue sunburst dial with a black gradient at the rim, lit discreetly by the radiance of twelve baguette-cut diamond hour markers (0.26 ct). This elegant contrast plays up the extreme restraint and legibility
of the dial design, with its faceted dauphine-style hands in white gold and slender sweep seconds hand. An alligator leather strap in shiny navy blue echoes the dial color. It is secured by a fold-over clasp in white gold. This new Annual Calendar Reference 5396G-017 houses the Caliber 26-330 S QA LU 24H self- winding movement, visible through the sapphire crystal case back, with a power reserve of up to 45 hours and operates at 28,800 beats per hour. The movement requires only one manual adjustment per year, at the end of February.
24 POLACHECK’S JEWELERS MAGAZINE
In-Line Perpetual Calendar Reference 5236P-010
In 2021, Patek Philippe unveiled a new perpetual calendar with day, date, and month indications in one large aperture at the 12 o’clock position. Equipped with its distinctive patented display mode, this timepiece was launched in a platinum case framing a blue dial with a black gradation to the periphery. The manufacture is now revisiting this platinum model, endowing it with a rose-gilt opaline dial of vintage inspiration presenting faceted baton-style applied hour markers and faceted baton-style hands, all in charcoal-gray white gold. The in- line perpetual calendar Reference
5236P-010’s elegant 41.5 mm platinum case, which is entirely hand-polished, is set with a diamond at 6 o’clock. Completing the new rose-gilt opaline is the hand-stitched shiny chocolate brown alligator leather strap with square scales, furnished with a platinum fold-over clasp. The Caliber 31-260 PS QL ultra- thin self-winding movement is notable for its additional module, awarded three patents, and its mini- rotor in platinum increasing the winding power. The movement can be admired through the sapphire crystal case back, and it supplies up to 48 hours of power reserve.
The range has become even more extensive with the addition of the platinum In-Line Perpetual Calendar Reference 5236P-010 and the white gold Annual Calendar Reference 5396G-017.

There’s always more than meets the eye when it comes to Italian jeweler Roberto Coin. Renowned for its innovative yet timeless jewels, the brand is often recognized for its signature hidden ruby that’s set into each piece as a secret good luck charm. And in true Roberto Coin fashion, this season doesn’t fall short of surprises as it introduces a record number of new collections that blend exquisite craftsmanship with innovative design. There are three new collections that stand out among the rest: Venetian Princess Pirouette, Stardust, and Vernazza.
The Venetian Princess Pirouette Collection Inspired by the adornment on the palaces that overlook Venetian canals, each piece in the Venetian Princess Pirouette collection is truly a wearable work of art. Even more, the designs draw inspiration from movements of dance, with interactive floral shapes that rotate on an axis, resulting in a multifaceted piece with many ways to wear it. One side boasts beautiful and bright precious stone petals while the other is rich with white diamonds. It’s an everyday piece meets special occasion stunner, all in one.
26 POLACHECK’S JEWELERS MAGAZINE
The Stardust Collection One of the biggest nuances between this season and those prior is Roberto Coin’s use of ceramic (in lieu of enamel) in many of its collections, and the Stardust collection is the best example. Pieces in the collection are available in both 18k white and yellow gold, with or without pavé diamonds, and in a range of deep vibrant blue ceramics.
The Vernazza Collection Named after one of the five towns that make up the Cinque Terre in Italy, the design for Vernazza alludes to the facades of the city’s architecture. It’s these facades, in fact, that were the inspiration for the collection’s six-pointed flower motif.

The Panthère takes its name from the bracelet; its ultra-flexible structure echoes the animal’s movements. Formed from a series of curved and polished links, it is remarkably flexible. Launched in 1983, the Panthère watch has been highly acclaimed since its creation. Above and beyond its design, this watch slinks onto the skin in a rippling celebration of triumphant and carefree femininity. This style icon has inspired Cartier to create four new versions in rose gold, yellow gold, and steel, with a silky dial in shades of golden plum, gold, midnight blue, and black. Four diagonally crossed dials reverse the play of light and reflect the brilliance of the iridescent and subtle gradations — a precious luminosity that adds to the jewel-like quality of the most feline watch in the Maison’s repertoire.

Steve Martin
OUR INTERVIEW WITH THE INCOMPARABLE
40 POLACHECK’S JEWELERS MAGAZINE
S
That is, until STEVE! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces , a documentary by director Morgan Neville, playing on Apple TV+. At 78, after more than 50 years in the spotlight, Martin continues to surprise his fans. Here are a few insights he has shared from the documentary and along the way.
Since Steve Martin burst onto the comedy scene in the ’70s, he’s been a man of mystery. Despite leading sold-out stadiums in his “Excuuuuse Me routine,” headlining a roster of quotable movies, penning best-selling books, leading a banjo revival, and his bromance with Martin Short, Martin has kept his cards close to the vest, like the accomplished magician he is.
WHAT DREW YOU TO A LIFE ON STAGE? As a kid, I had a little magician act, and I’d look at the stage and think, wow, it’s like heaven up there. There is always a little anxiety when you’re doing something you hope works out.
HOW DID YOU BUILD THE WILD AND CRAZY GUY CHARACTER? I noticed the indicators — the things comedians do to indicate that the joke is over. Whether it is funny or not, the audience has made a pact; that’s when we laugh. But that’s not real laughter. So I thought, “What if I created tension and never released it?”
FUN FACT: From age 10 to 18 Steve Martin worked at Disneyland
HOW DID YOUR FAMILY REACT TO YOUR SUCCESS? After the premiere of The Jerk (1979), my father said, “He’s no Charlie Chaplin.” Later, my mother said people at the store were excited that she was my mother, and I asked her how they knew. She told them!
WHY DID YOU WALK AWAY FROM STANDUP? It’s a simple story. I was exhausted by the travel. With a movie, there’s a sense of permanence; you could get the thing exactly right. And my early act was very conceptual; I was making fun of comedy. Once the audience understood the idea, it was a dead end.
WHY ARE YOU OPENING UP NOW? I see it as an antidote to the sort of anodyne interviews, generic things I’ve talked about a million times. What an odd life I’ve had. My whole life is backward. How did I go from riddled with anxiety in my 30s to [age] 78 and really happy? How did this happen?”

OYSTER PERPETUAL GMT-MASTER II Echoing emotions
OYSTER PERPETUAL DAY-DATE Harmonious variations
For the first time, the Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II in Oystersteel is presented with the Cerachrom bezel insert in grey and black ceramic introduced to the range in 2023. Its green 24-hour hand displays much more than just an alternative time zone. It points to another location that resonates with the wearer — a reminder of the emotions that accompany each traveller.
Dials that are ombré, colored blue-green, or in pearlized white mother-of-pearl. Faceted, deconstructed Roman numerals and faceted hour markers. A bezel set with trapeze-cut diamonds. The new versions of the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date express the brand’s enduring desire for rare and wide-ranging expertise to be found in even the smallest details. Colors, materials, motifs, hour markers — each element contributes to the harmony of the new combinations.
PERPETUAL 1908 Elegance in movement
OYSTER PERPETUAL ROLEX DEEPSEA Bringing light to the deep
The Perpetual 1908 is now available in 950 platinum with an ice blue dial, a hue that is exclusively for Rolex watches in this prestigious metal. On this guilloché dial with a rice-grain motif, light bounces off the raised pattern, producing a variety of reflections with every movement of the wrist. A watch of rare distinction, the new 1908 is a visual masterpiece that affirms its unique identity with elegance and finesse.
OYSTER PERPETUAL SKY-DWELLER The symphony of reflections Sophisticated, technical and distinguished, the Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller in 18 k Everose or yellow gold is now available with a Jubilee bracelet. By alternating the size and finish of the links, the Jubilee bracelet in 18 k gold stands out for its wealth of reflec- tions and harmonious forms. Designed to enable tireless travellers to rapidly find their bearings, the Sky-Dweller reaffirms its ele- gance and is a delight to the senses. The first Rolex deep-sea divers’ watch in 18 k yellow gold, the new Oyster Perpetual Rolex Deepsea is decked in blue on its dial, its bezel insert, and its compression ring — part of the Ringlock system. Made from blue ceramic — a technical innovation that is the result of a pioneering manufacturing process — this Cerachrom ring is decorated with a circular satin finish. Precious and technical. Majestic and innovative. A bright watch for the dark abyss. This new version of the Rolex Deepsea is engineered to shine into the ocean depths.
OYSTER PERPETUAL COSMOGRAPH DAYTONa An icon eternally revisited Rolex presents two new versions of the Oys- ter Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona whose dials contrast white and black natural moth- er-of-pearl and a bezel set with brilliant-cut diamonds. These reinterpretations of the iconic watch achieve the perfect balance of precision and preciousness. The watches, made from 18 k white gold, write another chapter in the legendary story of a model known for a wealth of variations, summon- ing the potential in each of us for perpetual reinvention.

When Kathy Dayan began designing jewelry, her goal was “to make fine quality jewelry
more wearable, jewelry to be worn at every moment, to float effortlessly on a woman’s skin as part of her very being.” And, as creative director of Los Angeles-based Shy Creation, she has done just that — the brand has become a must-visit

Another innovation this season is bold textures. Whether specialty diamond-cut grooves or wavy rows of gold, textures create depth and dimension, making these Kate collection designs even more striking. Also making a statement are the brand’s signet rings, featuring bold baguette diamonds surrounded by pavé-set gems, while its gold rings and bracelets offer an edgier vibe with two diamond snake-like tails. A new take on tennis bracelets and necklaces, in the Bailey collection, is attention-grabbing as well. “We have revisited the bezel setting and given it pointed ends that embrace emerald-cut diamonds.” Another trademark of Shy Creation is its high level of quality craftsmanship and the use of the finest natural diamonds. But its commitment to customers doesn’t stop there. Not only can they be assured that they have a beautiful piece of jewelry, but their purchase also helps people in mining communities around the world. When it comes to ethical sourcing and social responsibility, Shy Creation holds itself to a higher standard. A member of the Responsible Jewellery Council, the brand nurtures relationships with suppliers and partners to promote responsible business practices throughout its supply chain.

“OUR JEWELRY SPEAKS TO THE WOMAN WHO TRUSTS HER OWN FASHION SENSE,”
adds Kathy, noting that among the bestsellers are jewels that can be stacked and layered, mixed and matched. “Each person can experiment to create her own look, her own style.” Examples are seen in the brand’s many beautiful bracelets and bangles that can be stacked to create different widths, or its delicate necklaces that can be layered to create a look ranging from bold to delicate. And when it comes to layering, Shy Creation makes it even easier by attaching multiple chains, with or without diamonds, into a single gold or diamond-studded look. These pre-stacked creations offer a “simpler way of having a beautiful, layered look in one necklace or in one stacked bracelet,” says Kathy.

TECH REVOLUTION
THE FUTURE IS NOW
Wearable AI Is Here
T
Three new wearable artificial intelligence (AI) devices show how far technology has come — think of them like an Alexa you can wear on your body. They’re smart and cool, but do you need one now? These first-gen devices are setting the stage for the brave new world of everyday AI.

Humane AI Pin The Humane AI Pin is a small box you wear on your lapel. It doesn’t have a screen or keyboard — you communicate with it mainly by voice, although it does have the ability to create a virtual screen on your hand with a tiny projector. Humane wants you to think of it like a personal assistant that makes calls, sends messages, takes photos and videos, and helps you manage your life. The more you use it, the more it learns. Ask questions and it can return answers, much like Google or ChatGPT.
The Humane AI Pin is housed in a lightweight yet sturdy aluminum frame that affixes to your garment with a strong magnetic grip. The water-resistant case means it’s safe to wear while exercising or doing outdoor activities. It’s the most expensive of the stand-alones here, as it’s the only one with photo and video capability, plus a monthly subscription is required to use the services.
AS FASCINATING AS THESE FRESHMAN ENTRIES TO A BRAND-NEW TECHNOLOGY ARE, THE REALITY IS THAT THEIR LAUNCHES HAVE BEEN SOMEWHAT ROCKY.
Rabbit R1 The Rabbit R1 was designed with the philosophy of providing an app-free experience. It’s configured out-of-the-box to connect with smart home and portable consumer devices and manage digital errands. The system is built on rabbits or personal AI agents that carry out various tasks; users can train their own rabbits to work with their favorite apps. You can point the camera at objects and ask for information. There’s a screen in case you need visual information, and a mic and speakers for voice recording and listening to music. Apple Enters the Ring As fascinating as these freshman entries to a brand-new technology are, the reality is that their launches have been somewhat rocky. Tech reviewers and early adopters have pointed out that, although the future possibilities of these devices and the inevitable dozens that will follow are exciting to consider, the reality of their usefulness, and even current functionality is frustratingly limited. The rollouts of each of these cutting- edge companies have been plagued by painfully slow reaction times, surprising gaps in abilities, and error-prone answers, euphemistically referred to as “hallucinations” by the AI industry. Whether any of these gadgets will actually survive their first year or two in the market is a legitimate question. However, the large-scale adoption of AI-powered tech may have finally gotten the boost it needs to become mainstream from one of the biggest players in the tech space. Apple has
Limitless Pendant If you’re in a lot of meetings, the Limitless Pendant could be the perfect personal assistant. The Pendant is an accessory designed to make video calls and in-person meetings easier to remember by recording everything you hear and using AI to transcribe conversations. AI reads the transcript and suggests action items based on what was discussed during a meeting, meaning your to- do list will be ready when you are. The Pendant can be clipped onto a shirt or worn around your neck like a necklace. You can use it without a subscription, but the Pro plan offers more storage and utility.
finally thrown its rather large hat into the ring with the announcement of iOs 18, driven by a very significant amount of new AI integration, which they have cleverly named “Apple Intelligence.” Whether this will overtake and eliminate the smaller start-ups in the space or the rising tide will raise all boats remains to be seen. One thing is for sure, though: AI is no longer a niche market just for the tech geeks among us. The revolution in
AI-driven functionality is real and it’s going to grow. It’s a great time to start learning how to make it work for you, too.

Tudor Black Bay
T
Tudor introduces the newest iteration of the Black Bay in monochrome. Representing the latest in Black Bay, this model features evolved design elements, a “T-fit” clasp, and is Master Chronometer certified by METAS. The Black Bay, first launched in 2012, remains one of Tudor’s most recognized and beloved models. In its latest iteration, the case keeps the original proportions of a 41 mm case with a thinner profile. The unidirectional rotatable bezel features a black aluminum insert with a 60-minute scale to track immersion times, and the satin black dial is softly radial-brushed for a subtle shine under direct light. The Black Bay line features dials inspired by the Tudor divers’ watches produced during the 1950s. It borrows the characteristic angular hands known to collectors as
“snowflake” from models that appeared in the brand’s 1969 catalog. Its shoulder-less crown and the characteristics of its case are reminiscent of the first generations of Tudor divers’ watches. The new monochrome Black Bay ref. M7941A1A0NU comes fitted with either an entirely satin-brushed three-link stainless steel bracelet, a five-oval-shaped- link brushed and polished stainless steel bracelet, or a cut-to-size black rubber strap. All variations are equipped with the Tudor “T-fit” clasp with a system for rapid length adjustment. Easy to use, requiring no tools, and offering five positions, this practical system allows wearers to carry out a fine, instant adjustment of the total length of the bracelet along an adjustment window of 8 mm.
The METAS Master Chronometer-certified Manufacture Caliber MT5602-U automatic movement displays hour, minute, and seconds functions. The METAS Master Chronometer certification is comprehensive and covers the main functional characteristics of a watch. As such, the new Black Bay functions within a 5-second range of variation each day (0/+5), boasts resistance to 15,000 gauss of magnetic fields, is water-resistant to 660 feet, and includes a power reserve of 70 hours.

THE BLACK BAY IS THE RESULT OF THE SUBTLE BLEND OF TRADITIONAL AESTHETICS AND CONTEMPORARY WATCHMAKING. FAR FROM SIMPLY BEING AN IDENTICAL RE-RELEASE OF A CLASSIC, IT BRINGS TOGETHER 70 YEARS OF TUDOR DIVE WATCHES WHILE ALSO BEING RESOLUTELY ANCHORED IN THE PRESENT.
