IWC Portugieser Automatic Refreshed
T
The origins of the Portugieser date back to the late 1930s, when IWC Schaffhausen used a high-precision pocket watch movement to create a distinctively large wristwatch with chronometer precision at the request of two Portuguese businessmen. The Portugieser remains timeless and has retained its freshness to this day. Clean and open dials with applied Arabic numerals, Feuille-type hands, and the characteristic railway-style minutes scale ensure perfect legibility. IWC Schaffhausen has now refined its timelessly elegant Portugieser watches on every level and presents a new collection of the Portugieser Automatic 42 and the
Portugieser Automatic 40. All watches feature a carefully reworked case construction with a slender side profile, making them visually light and more elegant. The double box- glass sapphire crystals offer an even better view of the new dials and the IWC-manufactured movements inside. The Portugieser Auto- matic 42 Ref. IW5017 is distinguished by its bal- anced dial design with the power reserve indicator at 3 o’clock and the small sec- onds at 9 o’clock. The new versions fully retain the DNA of the original Portugieser Au- tomatic from the year 2000. IWC offers the Portugieser Automatic 42 in 18k white gold, 18k rose gold, and stainless steel. Powering these mod- els is the IWC-manufactured Caliber 52011, complete with a Pellaton wind- ing system that supplies seven days of power reserve (168 hours) via two barrels.
THE NEW SELECTION OF DIAL COLORS, WHICH INCLUDE HORIZON BLUE, OBSIDIAN, DUNE, AND SILVER MOON, REFLECT THE NEVER-ENDING CYCLE OF DAY AND NIGHT, UNDERSCORING THE TIMELESS APPEAL OF THE PORTUGIESER’S DESIGN.
First introduced to the collection in 2020, the Portugieser Automatic 40 Ref. IW3584 presents the essence of the Portugieser design with a more compact case size of 40 millimeters. Standing in direct lineage to the first Portugieser, Reference 325 from 1939, it features a clean and open dial with the small seconds sundial at 6 o’clock. The new versions of the Portugieser Automatic 40 include an 18k white gold model with a Horizon Blue dial and an 18k rose gold edition with a black obsidian dial. Inside the cases is the IWC- manufactured Caliber 82200 with 60 hours of power reserve.
