T his year, the winning jockey will boast a significantly special trophy commemorating both the 150th Kentucky Derby and the Gold Cup’s 100th anniversary. Handcrafted from 68 ounces of solid 14K gold and featuring a stunning display of rubies, diamonds, and emeralds, the 150th Kentucky Derby Gold Cup is a spectacular piece of hardware — a reflection of tradition, luxury, and excellence. And it was crafted by S.R. Blackinton and our friends at Baxter’s Fine Jewelry in Rhode Island. Carrying on a silversmithing family legacy that began in 1862, Susanne Blackinton-Juaire and her husband, Bill Juaire, oversaw the design and craftsmanship of this year’s trophy, an honor these artisans have held nearly every year since 1975. Learning the trade from her father and his company, New England Sterling, Susanne and Bill continue using old-world spinning techniques, tools, and traditions to construct a horse jockey’s greatest prize. And when the idea to use precious gemstones and diamonds in this year’s design struck, Susanne reached out to Paul Messerlian, owner of Baxter’s Fine Jewelry. “I knew I had a vision of what I wanted, and I remembered how we did the 125th trophy,” said Blackinton. So I searched out and found Paul, and he’s got just an amazing team over at Baxter’s, and they really helped bring our vision to life.”
THE MAKING OF A MASTERPIECE FOR THE 150TH KENTUCKY DERBY BEYOND THE FINISH LINE

Established in 1960, Baxter’s Fine Jewelry has modernized its jewelry shop with the latest printing machines, laser welding, engraving machines, in-house computer-aided design, and a manufacturing facility. Combining family traditions, commitment to hand-crafted quality, and the latest in jewelry CAD design and setting technology, Baxter’s Fine Jewelry and S.R. Blackinton created a stunning Derby trophy that will forever hold a place in history. Crafting the Gold Cup is a tradition for S.R. Blackinton, but adding stones to the design only happens every 25 years, making each quarter century’s Gold Cup special, and this year’s is exceptional. Laid across the rider’s lap atop the trophy is a rose blanket comprised of 196 rubies, 36 round emeralds, and 96 marquise emeralds. Twelve round brilliant diamonds make up the cover cape, and the braid around the top of the trophy’s body incorporates 38 cabochon rubies.
The horseshoe consists of 12 diamonds, and the entire thing rests on a solid jade base, finishing off the unique display for a celebratory milestone. “We wanted to make the emeralds look like the real leaves on the blanket. So, we finalized the design, ordered all the stones, ensured they matched, and then set them all using a microscope with new technology and laser welding,” explained Messerlian. “That’s why it came out so nice and precise.”

F loor-to-ceiling windows, live music, and artful floral arrangements set the scene one evening last October when Davis Jewelers hosted its first ever David Yurman styling event at the chic Hotel Genevieve. Attendees had
the rare opportunity to chat with David Yurman’s stylist, Travis Ngo, about how to make the most of their own jewelry collections by layering and mixing different pieces together to create new looks. “It was a lively, exciting event! The people and the energy were incredible,” Ngo said of the evening, adding that he “loved getting to know Davis clients,” and that it was a true joy to talk jewelry styling with “such a fashion forward group.”

Long tables lined the walls of the glamorous space, bearing displays sparkling with the latest jewelry delights by David Yurman. Guests browsed, mingled, and enjoyed a choice of three signature cocktails inspired by the iconic jewelry brand: the Solari Spritz, Cable Classic, and Mercer Martini. When asked if he had any suggestions for jewelry lovers looking for new ways to style their own collections, Ngo advised, “Styling is a personal thing…if you feel good, then you look good. There’s no right or wrong. Have fun and break the rules!”

INSIDE THE KENTUCKY DERBY MUSEUM’S 150TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
A s this year marks the 150th anniversary of the Kentucky Derby ® , The Kentucky Derby Museum took not one, but 150 days to celebrate the occasion. The festivities kicked off with a 600-person event over the winter, and the celebrations continued with plenty of museum-hosted Derby tributes, concluding with the larger-than-life 37th Annual Kentucky Derby Museum Ball and Backstretch Party on April 26, 2024. With the support of Davis Jewelers’ Ashley Davis (who is also a member of the Museum’s Board of Directors) and fine jeweler David Yurman, the event raised funds that enabled the nonprofit museum to continue its free offerings, including field trips, immersive exhibits, new program initiatives, and more.

“The Museum is very intentional about internal event planning,” says the Kentucky Derby Museum’s Development Manager, Lauren Baldwin. “Every single event is on brand and fulfills our mission to engage, educate, and excite everyone about the extraordinary experience that is the Kentucky Derby!
