ROLEX STANDS WITH THE WORLD’S GREAT GOLFERS

The connection between Rolex and the world of golf is based on the shared commitment to continuous improvement and unwavering precision

Rolex Testimonee Jon Rahm celebrates holing the winning putt on the 72nd hole at the 121st U.S. Open.

R olex’s enduring relationship with the world of golf began more than 50 years ago when Arnold Palmer became the brand’s first golf Testimonee. He was quickly joined by Testimonees Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player. Together they became known as The Big Three, and they changed the face of golf forever. In 1967, Rolex gifted Jack Nicklaus with a yellow gold Rolex Day-Date, Reference 1803, and it became his go-to watch. The Day-

Date was the first waterproof, selfwinding wristwatch to feature a day display fully spelled out on the dial. Its tapered and faceted baton hour markers are reminiscent of golf tees, and its President bracelet is iconic. In 2019, after wearing his Day-Date during 12 of his record 18 professional major championship titles, Nicklaus sold the watch at a Phillips auction, donating the $1.22-million proceeds to the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation.

“It was the first watch I ever owned, and the only watch I wore for every professional tournament I’ve won throughout my career,” said Nicklaus. “It has accompanied me at U.S. Opens, The Masters tournaments, PGA Championships, The Open championships, and countless other events for over five decades, and has served me well at every step along the way.”

Rolex became both the official and unofficial watch of golf as champion after champion donned the brand for their conquests on the course. In the 1980s, Rolex added The Open and U.S. Open to its growing number of partners, as well as the guardians of the game, The R&A and USGA. Since 2000, the depths of these relationships have developed further and grown to support the development of golf excellence worldwide. From elite players and golf legends to the game’s major championships, Rolex is ever- present, in support of the Masters Tournament at Augusta National, the PGA Championship, U.S. Open, The Open tournament held in England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, the Amundi Evian Championship, the Solheim Cup, and the Ryder Cup. Rolex’s support for the game is built on a strong sense of integrity and respect for tradition that ensures the continuity of expertise and knowledge while understanding the importance of investing in the development of the sport for future generations.

FUN IN FUNCHAL Funchal cascades down steep hillsides towards the glistening blue sea, and since our arrival a few hours ago, we have already explored some of the narrow steep roads. We lay back as the car propelled us upward and held our breath as we swept downhill — often with stone walls on either side and a hair’s breadth between car and stone. Here and there we found viewpoints where we stopped to admire the vista spread out below. Tropical flowers were still in bloom, and they added splashes of bright color to the scene. Feeling hungry after an early flight, we stopped for refreshment in town at Rei da Poncha. We ordered mammoth hot dogs with the traditional poncha, a strong alcoholic drink made with distilled alcohol derived from sugar cane, honey, and lemon juice. It is always accompanied with peanuts, and here they were served in tubs. One of Madeira’s most famous attractions is the famous wicker sledge ride, which takes tourists at hair-raising speed down narrow streets, from Monte to the city below. The sledges are pushed by two men dressed in traditional white with straw boaters, who use their boots as breaks. Originally, in the 19th century,

the sledges were used to transport locals, but today they transport tourists like us. With the wind in our faces as we compete with crossing cars at intersections, the experience is, at the very least, memorable. A more leisurely ride from the hills above Funchal can be had by cable car. As usual, we had to be unconventional and take the journey in reverse. This meant great sweeping views from our own car on our way up, as well as amazing vistas from the cable car on the way down. Another must-see is the farmers market in the center of town. Here the flower sellers are dressed in the national costume. Their hats resemble a piece of fruit cut in half with a sprig protruding from the top. This market also offers a wide variety of local fruits and vegetables, many unknown to us. There are aromatic herbs and spices, vegetables, meat, wines, and local crafts. In the little bakery I had the best Portuguese tart I have ever tasted. Flaky and warm from the oven.

TRAVELING EAST Breakfast this morning was in a little restaurant overlooking the colorful fishing boats in Câmara de Lobos, a village just outside Funchal. A place much favored by Winston Churchill, Câmara de Lobos is where he loved to paint. The picturesque boats and scenery are in direct contrast to the black scabbardfish they catch here at night. Often referred to as “monsters from the deep,” due to their rows of sharp teeth, they are extremely ugly but considered a wonderful fish to eat and are often served with passion fruit and banana sauce. A short journey along the coast leads to a glass walkway at the top of the towering Cabo Girao, allowing visitors to walk out and admire the stunning vistas. At the entrance, we encountered a oddly dressed man playing

bongos and chanting in strange tones. A rainbow formed overhead, so we drove up the nearby hillside to get a better view. There were many eucalyptus trees and the air was heavy with their pungent scent. Further along the coast, we traveled through a rock tunnel, which made its exit onto a road where a waterfall plunged onto the pavement from the lofty rocks above. Many visitors stopped to dance in the cascading water. TRAVELING WEST Eventually, we traveled west from Funchal to Quinta do Lorde. The terrain became frilly, and smooth porous stones of various colors littered the landscape. A couple of small vans along the way displayed beautiful handmade artwork.

We continued to Semana, famous for its historical tiny A-framed houses with straw roofs. I especially enjoyed the woman spinning yarn for her handicrafts in one of the A-frames and the homemade cakes and biscuits in another. The flavor of home baking outstripped the usual tourist offerings. We received some interesting baking instructions using local ingredients, like the syrup from the sugarcane — often referred to has honey cane — and used in the island’s traditional madeira cake. Here too they sold Madeira wine, and we learned that a five-year- aged bottled goes well with savory dishes and a ten-year-old with desserts.

INTO THE MOUNTAINS The levadas, narrow channels of water which slope from the humid north to the drier south, were first built in the sixteenth century. Energizing walks following the levadas offer magnificent panoramic views and opportunities to enjoy nature at its best. Some of the most interesting viewpoints on these expeditions could be found on Pico Arieiro and Pico Ruivo, two of the area’s highest peaks. The micro climate here places you above the clouds, which was a truly enchanting experience. We returned to Funchal along a route which was, at times, shrouded in mist where temperatures plummeted. We stopped for refreshment at a rustic timber restaurant, a place akin to a ski lodge with blazing log fires. It seemed so bizarre when not far away, down in Funchal it was warm and sunny. We enjoyed a cheese and sausage platter with all the accompaniments here that was fantastic.

As we continued toward the capital, small hamlets with terraces of cultivation began to appear, and the verges on either side were edged with hydrangeas for mile after mile. Later, we entered banana-growing country. The giant bunches of fruit looked almost ready to harvest. Traveling on, we encountered several gushing waterfalls en route to the north shores of the island, where great waves of the Atlantic Ocean pounded the coast. We stopped for coffee and encountered strange alien-looking plants hanging in giant loops. Further along the coast, we visited the natural swimming pools at Porto Maniche, which are formed by volcanic lava and filled with crystal-clear sea water from the Atlantic. Paths and walkways connect the pools, so it is possible to swim in one and easily move THE PICTURESQUE NORTHERN COAST

to another. They vary in size and depth. There is also a children’s play area, changing rooms and bathrooms with lockers for storing personal items, and a restaurant on site. We spent quite a bit of time here enjoying the unique ambiance. ETERNAL SPRINGTIME One of the greatest things about Madeira is the diversity of experiences available, with colorful tropical vegetation and a wonderful climate year-round. There is also a packed calendar of events, from the flower festival in the summer to the fireworks display at New Year’s, which has been heralded as one of the world’s must-see displays.

T he ruby has always been enveloped in a legendary aura, and due to its exceptional quality of maintaining beauty throughout time it is considered eternal, like true love. According to an ancient belief, wearing a ruby close to the skin promoted long life, health, and happiness, and even today it is believed to possess these magic powers, including the extraordinary ability of giving peace. In 1996, Roberto Coin started signing his jewels by setting a small ruby hidden on the inside of each piece, allowing the distinguished gem to kiss the skin. Since then, this tradition has become the exclusive signature of every jewel by Roberto Coin, dedicated as a secret gift of good wishes to every woman lucky enough to wear one of his exclusive creations. M artine Hul had a dream of creating feminine and wearable jewelery. Fueled by her beliefs in harmony and the Chinese philosophy of Feng Shui, she launched her first collection in 2001, and Hulchi Belluni was born. Hul’s 20 years of experience, united with her own distinguished style, sparkling energy, and effervescent creativity, allow her to add a unique value to every piece of jewelery she designs, guided by the principles of this traditional Chinese practice. The positive Chi energy around which Feng Shui is centered, brings harmony and balance to her designs, so that they present a visible, balanced interaction

between all five elements: wood, fire, water, earth, and metal. A Hulchi Belluni creation bubbles with lively energy (wood), it blazes and radiates power (fire), yet it is quenched by organic and wavy features (water) and makes romance (earth) overflow in peace and luxuriousness (metal). You can feel the jewels radiate Chi, the positive energy which blissfully brings balance to your body. Your love glitters and shines like a Hulchi Belluni — this jewel born out of love. If you bring all elements in your life into balance, they will radiate with positive energy; they will radiate with Chi.

CHAIN REACTION

W ith dopamine dressing on the rise (a term recently coined by fashion psychologist Dawnn Karen to describe the intention of dressing for a mood-boosting effect), one of the latest jewelry trends references the feel-good spirit of the ’90s: oversized gold chains. As more and more people are looking to dress up again, they’re looking for something

that’s familiar and nostalgic, while embracing a maximalist attitude that might even make a statement. And what better way than through larger- than-life gold links? We’re not even just talking necklaces (although there are definitely some chunky chokers on the market right now) this trend extends to bracelets, earrings, and beyond.

34 ALSON JEWELERS MAGAZINE

Whether translated through sheer volume or layerable length, many designers are taking the bold link design a step further by incorporating diamond embellishments (diamond Cuban chains, in particular, are having a moment) or pops of bright enamel. Essentially, it can be glammed up, pared down, or fall somewhere in the middle.

Every JB Star creation is crafted by hand, using only platinum or 18k yellow and pink gold. The quality of the stones is of the highest quality, without compromise.

JB Star jewelry is proudly designed and manufactured one piece at a time in the company’s Fifth Avenue workshop in New York City. “JB Star is a brand for individuals who are passionate about jewelry and consider their pieces to be wearable works of art,” says Rafael.

Her more modern take on this style takes the form of a series of confetti-style chokers, in which diamonds in a variety of shapes and sizes are set in a free-form arrangement. The creative placement of diamonds adds a unique, contemporary kick to the traditional riviera silhouette. The Watercolor Confetti variations add a punch of femininity to the look, with soft pink, vibrant pink and purple sapphires. The Medallion collection embraces some of Penny’s favorite motifs, including sun, moon and stars, hearts and engraveable disks for a collection of everyday jewelry with distinctive symbolism. In another signature twist, Penny adds a hand-applied finish to the gold Antique Amulet collection, giving a vintage luster and feel to lariats, stackable rings, dainty drop earrings and gold bangles. Did someone say pearls and yellow gold? Penny works two of this year’s hottest trends in jewelry into her Pearl Link collection, creating an updated twist on classic freshwater and baroque shaped pearls, and she made them transformable! The pearl links can be removed from the earrings, which can then be worn as small diamond huggies, and the link bracelets can be enhanced with clip-on pearl medallions, some with diamond moon, star, or heart overlays — another unmistakable Penny Preville touch!

ITALIAN LUXURY

PASQUALE BRUNI

T here is a certain flair to a piece of jewelry created by Pasquale Bruni: the swooping curve of diamond-encrusted gold flower that is sculpted to perfection to portray a petal or a leaf on the vine, or intricate facets on a piece of green agate or mother-of-pearl that transform a hard stone into a bold, glittering jewel with perfectly placed diamond highlights. It is the kind of creativity that happens when a family of jewelers, designers, and gemologists are given free rein to explore the limits of their imagination, executing their designs to a standard of craftsmanship that is often forgotten. Pasquale Bruni draws on his Italian roots to

create jewelry that is a contemporary blend of art and design. It all began in 1976 when 20-year- old Bruni founded his workshop in Valenza, Italy. Today, he is joined by his daughter Eugenia, who serves as creative director, and son Daniele, a gemologist who serves as president of the US subsidiary. One of the brand’s most iconic collections is Giardini Segreti, which is designed to embrace a woman’s femininity. Giardini Segreti takes us into the secret garden of life, with graceful leaves and flowers, inspired by the gardens of Milan. Crafted in 18k rose or white gold, set with diamonds, it

includes chokers, bracelets, ear cuffs, and pendant earrings. Ton Joli is another floral themed collection, with five-petaled creations made with lapis lazuli, onyx, and white and green agate. The gems are faceted using the brand’s proprietary Bon Ton cut, in which soft irregular facets merge in a cabochon pistil. The Luce collection plays with the reflection of light from highly polished 18k gold disks, as if capturing the glow of the rising sun on the sea. The diamond-set elements represent the phases of the moon.

the new porsche TAYCAN

Porschephile: the definition can describe everything from those that own many to those that know everything there is to know about Porsche. I don’t profess to be one, but I will say that the lines on this machine are so sleek and exciting, I can understand the personification of affection an enthusiast might hold for such an amazing machine.

It is hard to believe that it has been 20 years since the introduction of the Porsche Cayenne. I was unimpressed by everything except the sales numbers. America loves its SUVs, and Porsche capitalized, but its shape looked like a 911 turned into a monster truck. It sat high and looked awkward. And if you went for the largest tire size, it looked even worse. Although, the Cayenne has evolved, changed, and improved, I’d say the Macan is even more impressive. The 911 shape looks best on a smaller truck, and the performance figures speak for themselves.

The Porsche Panamera went into production in 2011. It was universally panned as looking like an eggplant. It really did have an almost wagon-like appearance. Too tall, too big in the rear — it wasn’t pretty. The facelift in 2013 helped, but it was not going to win a beauty contest. Once again, Porsche eventually fixed the look, and today it really is an attractive 4-door sedan, inside and out.

THE TAYCAN IS THE PURE EXPRESSION OF A

PORSCHE ELECTRIC SPORTS CAR: STRIKING

PROPORTIONS, TIMELESS AND INSTANTLY

RECOGNIZABLE DESIGN, AND A PERFECT BLEND OF

PERFORMANCE WITH EVERYDAY USABILITY.

The Taycan is a different story altogether. Chapter one introduces a very refined and sophisticated body shape. It is fully recognizable as a Porsche. But as the 911 has modernized its silhouette, so too has the Taycan taken notes by getting wide, low, and oh so tough. The Fisker Karma was designed by Henrik Fisker and introduced in 2012. In my opinion, his 4-door design was revolutionary; however the company went under in 2014 for a lot of good reasons. The car was expensive, cheaply made, heavy, lacked performance, and advertised as an electric vehicle, even though you’d be lucky to get 30 miles on a charge before the 260hp turbocharged 4-banger kicked in — think Toyota Camry. The company was bought by Wanxiang, a Chinese auto-parts company. In 2017 they reintroduced the luxury car under a new name, Revero. Again, same problems. The latest

iteration is the new Karma GS-6. It is immensely better. But, thanks to Tesla, the market has moved from plug-in hybrids to EVs. You might think I’m digressing by discussing the Karma, but since 2012, nothing has been as visually stimulating in this market segment — until now. Tesla’s loyalists (self-declared “Teslerati” — you can’t make this stuff up) are quick to point out that the Taycan is no Tesla when it comes to range and speed. As a Porschephile in training, I can tell you that is not what I care about as I drive to the grocery store or business lunch. The base Taycan may not be as fast at 0-60 in 5.1 seconds, but jump up to the Turbo model and it drops to 2.6 seconds. I’m going to get to the grocery plenty fast enough. It may not have Tesla range, but with the Performance Plus Battery it can go up to 225 miles on a single charge. Remember, I said this is

chapter one. The Taycan does offer another body shape in the Taycan 4 Cross Turismo and Taycan Sport Turismo. It’s not for me, but it does offer more rear storage and backseat headroom. While it still has a great look, it is not as striking and titillating as the sleeker model. The Taycan is an electric car and thus it has limitations. Stuttgart’s first EV has everything Porsche is known for. It is fast, fun to drive, somewhat practical to own, and has an impeccable interior, plus it charges quickly. It is the most complete EV available in the galaxy. But where the Taycan really excels is in those body lines. She is an exceptional beauty who will turn every head as she pulls into any parking lot. She belongs with me, next to my ’82 911 Targa.

COMPANY CAUSES

T oday, we don’t just shop; we shop for products from companies we trust and admire — companies that align themselves with the heroes of today, that have a social conscience and an environmental action plan. If you want to get to know a watch brand, take a look at its affiliations — its sponsorships, partnerships, and programs. That way, when you buy a watch, you not only get something beautiful, you have a chance to support causes you believe in or athletes and sports that you admire. Here are a few of the connections between watch brands and causes.

WHAT DOES YOUR FAVORITE WATCH BRAND STAND FOR ?

ROLEX In addition to sponsoring elite sporting events such as Wimbledon Tennis, Daytona International Speedway racing, and US Open Golf, Rolex works on many levels to support environmental causes. The Rolex Perpetual Planet program is a three-pronged approach that includes a partnership with the National Geographic Society to study the impacts of climate change; support for biologist Sylvia Earle’s Mission Blue initiative to safeguard the oceans through a network of protected “hope spots;” and the Rolex Awards for Enterprise, which recognizes individuals whose projects advance knowledge that protects humans and the environment.

Tudor Pelegos.

TUDOR Tudor, whose motto is “Born to Dare,” is a pure sports brand and is, therefore, associated with a number of top athletes, including soccer star David Beckham, surf champion Nic Von Rupp, and the All Blacks rugby team from New Zealand. The goal is to celebrate human endurance and to build a sports watch that is appropriately robust yet accessible.

IWC IWC Schaffhausen associates itself with Laureus Sport for Good, which runs social sports programs through a network of global grantees. Founded under the patronage of Nelson Mandela, Laureus Sport for Good uses sports as a powerful and cost-effective tool to help children and young people overcome violence, discrimination, and disadvantage in their lives.

Breitling Superocean 42 Kelly Slater Limited Edition

BREITLING Breitling joins the action on the surfing side, as a supporter of Outerknown, a company owned by surf champion and Breitling ambassador Kelly Slater which makes sustainable clothing. Over 90 percent of Outerknown’s products are made from organic, recycled, or regenerated materials. Outerknown is surfer slang for the other, unseen side of a wave. Breitling also supports the Solar Impulse Foundation, which promotes products and processes that protect the environment. “Protecting the environment doesn’t have to be boring,” insists the program’s founder, Bertrand Piccard. “My goal is to change the narrative that assumes protecting the environment is boring, expensive, and sacrificial. I want to show that it can be exactly the opposite. It can be exciting, it can be profitable, it can create jobs and become the core of economic development.”

O ver the past five years, online luxury watch resale platforms have evolved from bulletin-board-style marketplaces operated by largely anonymous sellers to organized professional dealers who own, authenticate, restore, and service their inventory. Many retail jewelers now offer a selection of pre- owned watches that rivals the breadth of their new collections. With access to top trained watchmakers or in-house watchmakers familiar with top brands, retailers can

offer pre-owned watches in top condition, some with warranties attached to them. The pre-owned boom is driven partly by the fact that previously owned watches are more readily available — including limited editions that were previously unattainable. A luxury watch has long been considered a long- term heirloom or investment, with a level of craftsmanship and engineering that means it can be worn for a lifetime and passed on for generations. But that doesn’t mean it has to be

worn on the same wrist for a lifetime. A decade ago, when a luxury watch showed up on the secondary market, it was often past its prime and in need of repair. Today, collectors are more eager to sell what they’re not wearing and move on to other pieces, and that means letting go of perfectly good watches. As aficionados broaden their collections, buying and selling more frequently, the number of great watches on the pre-owned market has exploded. Far from being worn out, many are almost new.
