IPPOLITA JEWELRY FOR THE MODERN WOMAN’S LIFESTYLE
As the daughter of an American artist and an Italian intellectual, art, beauty, and culture have been a significant part of Ippolita Rostagno’s life. She spent her childhood immersed in art and architecture in the hills of Tuscany. She went on to earn her baccalaureate in sculpture at the renowned Istituto D’Arte in Florence, and these experiences have really helped her to shape the artistic lens through which she creates. Moving to the United States at the young age of 18, Ippolita quickly got to work finding a way to incorporate her love of beauty into a business. It didn’t take long for her to recognize a gap in jewelry
offerings for women. “Where was all the jewelry for the cool women? Where was the jewelry for busy, independent women that wanted pieces they could wear with a T-shirt but also a gown? Where was the jewelry that was on-trend but not trendy — the jewelry women could wear today, yet pass down for generations because it was made from real materials?” She began to craft her own pieces using techniques honed in her years studying sculpture, but they all had to pass one test — they had to be “cool enough to covet, yet classic enough to keep.” It wasn’t long before the world took note.
The materials — mainly the metals — must be flattering on everyone. The earrings must be lightweight and move freely with the body (they are strenuously tested for weight, comfort, and movement). The necklaces must lay correctly on the neck, on a blouse, or even over bulky clothing. For this reason, all the stones must have two fronts (instead of a front and a back). They must also have versatility in styling, so the clasps are scaled to allow the wearer to combine necklaces and easily double longer silhouettes, and the scales must complement one another for those who wish to layer multiple pieces. The bangles must stack with ease. The shape and the movement must be feminine. Metal is a hard material, so the challenge of making it look and feel soft and feminine was also a top priority from the start.
