Fredric H. Rubel Jewelers is a family business in more ways than one. Beyond its principals, David and Gary Rubel, the family extends to employees and customers, the other two pillars of the triumvirate that keeps the business alive and well — and fun! “I’m a foodie, and sometimes customers who know me well come in with pastries or some other goodies for me,” says Chien Fen Huang, who has worked at Fredric H. Rubel for 23 years. “I have stayed here a long time because I think people here are friendly, and a lot of clients are very sweet.” Chien came to the U.S. from Taiwan to finish her degree in interior architecture. She also became interested in gemology, and ended up obtaining her graduate gemology degree the Gemological Institute of America and landing a job at Rubel in 1999. It was her first job, and she is still happy there more than two decades later. In addition to being a sales associate, she takes on many roles at the store: repairs, appraisals, inventory, even shipping. “I like working here because it’s family owned and the clients end up feeling like family too. It’s a long-term relationship.” What’s her favorite thing in the store? “The Rolexes,” she says. “Particularly the GMT-Master II. And, of course, the diamonds. I really love diamonds.”
