THE LOW-COUNTRY LIFESTYLE OF SAVANNAH

W hen you think of the South, perhaps you picture Southern charm and Southern hospitality. But the Old South has changed dramatically over the years and become more homogenized with the rest of the country. Atlanta is now a bustling metropolis, much like many East Coast cities. The same can be said for Nashville, Tennessee: Raleigh, North Carolina: and Columbia, South Carolina. However, there are pockets where time seems to have stood still — where a glass

of sweet tea served with a warm smile under massive Spanish moss-covered oak trees is still a common sight rather than the exception. When I first traveled to Ireland, I marveled at how the people, language, and culture mirrored the caricatures created by the TV shows and cartoons I had watched as a kid. Indeed, it is true that they sing and invite you into their pubs for a raucous good time, often inviting you to pull up a chair at their table. The Irish love Americans, and they

love to celebrate life on a daily basis. It is a magical place. I feel the same about historic Savannah, Georgia. The beauty of this small city will seduce you with its colonial-style architecture and rich history. It’s a place where you are made to feel at home and at peace. It’s a relaxed culture that has embraced its past and preserved what is comforting about the old South. The pace is slow. The people are welcoming and considerate of others. They love life in Savannah!
