TIME ZONE

BY CAROL BESLER

T he Longines Heritage collection highlights the company’s unbeatable archive of vintage watches, many of which reinforce Longines’ strength in the aviation category. The Zulu collection is a tribute to aviation heroes who have worn Longines watches in the past, including most notably Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart, and Amy Johnson, along with Howard Hughes, Clyde Panghorn, and Hugh Herndon — all of whom wore Longines while in the air. The term Zulu Time is another name for Greenwich Mean Time, the universal standard in aviation. It’s derived from the NATO phonetic alphabet, where “Zulu” means “Z” and is a reference to the zero hours of Greenwich Mean Time. “The Zulu collection is a tribute to these exceptional men and women who, by a record, an exploit or a display of courage, have left their mark on history, pushing new generations to surpass themselves,” says Longines. LONGINES SPIRIT ZULU TIME AND ULTRA-CHRON extraordinary sports watches

42mm Stainless Steel Spirit Zulu Time with Blue Leather Strap. $2,950

43mm Stainless Steel Ultra-Chron Box Edition with Additional Fabric Strap. $3,700

The Ultra-Chron is another pure Longines sports watch, this one beating at 10 beats a second, or 36,000 vph (the average watch movement beats at 28,800 vph). Longines has a rich history in creating high-frequency movements, a quality that enhances the accuracy and reliability of a mechanical watch. In 1968 it launched the Ultra-Chron Diver, the first dive watch to be equipped with a high-frequency movement. Even before that, in 1959, it developed the first high-beat movement for a wristwatch that set new records in terms of accuracy.
