POMELLATO NOW AVAILABLE AT REIS-NICHOLS

S ince its founding in Milan by goldsmith Pino Rabolini in 1967, Pomellato has mastered the art of combining approachable prêt-à-porter jewelry with designs that could work for both day and evening, from the beach to the red carpet. The brand is most recognizable for its bold use of vibrant color with distinctively

cut stones, and its impeccable Milanese craftsmanship. The unconventional beauty of its rings, pendants, necklaces, and earrings convey a rare sophistication best understood by the multitude of women worldwide who love to wear the brand’s trademark 18k gold pieces.

The NUDO COLLECTION , in- troduced in 2001, is a timeless classic. It comprises a rainbow of gemstones that seemingly float on air, thanks to Pomel- lato’s skillful use of prong-free settings. Rings—with or without diamonds—are meant to be mixed and matched to express the wearer’s individual style. Varying siz- es of stones glow in blue or white topaz, amethyst, garnet, prasiolite, peridot, rose quartz, and more. The Nudo collection also includes drop earrings, necklaces, pendants, and bracelets, each with the characteristic “nude” gemstones that take center stage in each design. Accents of white, brown, or black pavé-set diamonds conjure the sands of the Mediterranean shore, while more simple designs allow the colorful gemstones to shine.

DAVID YURMAN AMERICA’S FIRST FAMILY OF JEWELRY

W hen David Yurman sculpted his first Cable bracelet with gold wire 40 years ago, he envisioned the twisted metal ropes that architect John Augustus Roebling used to suspend the Brooklyn Bridge. “That strength and simplicity grabbed me,” he once said. It’s a style Yurman also recognized in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s ancient gold torque necklaces and in DNA’s twisted structure, and even in nature’s hanging vines. Today, the universal design is instantly recognizable as David Yurman’s signature. Over the past four decades, David and Sybil Yurman, the husband-and-wife team who established the brand in 1980, have leaned into the Cable motif and made it an iconic American design. It’s been reimagined in countless styles, from colorful, bold aluminum cuffs to elegant diamond engagement rings and luxurious diamond chain link necklaces. It’s the thread that defines and connects Yurman’s stylish, contemporary, and classical ethos. “The Cable form is at the heart of everything we do— changing, adapting, and evolving, but always a constant,” says Evan Yurman, the founder’s 40-year-old son who was named president in November 2021.

26 REIS-NICHOLS JEWELERS MAGAZINE

DAVID YURMAN’S NEXT GENERATION CABLE The newest evolution is Cable Edge, a wave-like pattern made in recycled silver and gold with conflict-free diamonds. The motif is based on a twisted rectangular form that echoes the undulating shapes found in modern architecture. “Its clean, contemporary look and feel will appeal especially to people with an appreciation for art and sculpture,” says Evan. “It plays with light and angles to create an almost velvety sensation. It’s truly one of my favorite collections we have done.”

Cable Edge is the company’s first jewelry collection made exclusively with recycled metals and traceable diamonds, and more are in the works. By using metals that have previously been refined, the brand is reducing the demand for newly mined materials and the energy needed to process them. Cable Edge is an example of Evan’s influence on the business. Sustainability is a priority. He is also continuing his parents’ focus on infusing jewelry with a sense of timeless modernity and shares their love of architecture, art, and design. But don’t expect to see David and Sybil retire anytime soon. They still love coming into the office, designing and experimenting with new ideas, and they remain committed to the brand they started when they were struggling artists. Growing up with a mother who paints and a father who sculpts, it’s no surprise that Evan showed an early interest in art and design. Over his two decades working in the family business, he launched men’s jewelry and bridal, high jewelry, and most recently, served as Chief Creative Officer. “Having been around the business from an early age, I have great pride for our classic style and founding identity, and throughout my time working for the company, I have sought to honor those traditions of craft, product, and innovation, all the while embracing the natural evolution of David Yurman.” The close-knit Yurman family all live near the company’s Tribeca headquarters, which makes

“THE CABLE FORM IS AT THE HEART OF EVERYTHING WE DO—CHANGING, ADAPTING, AND EVOLVING, BUT ALWAYS A CONSTANT.” — Evan Yurman, President, David Yurman

it easy for Evan Yurman’s three daughters to visit. His eldest daughter Cody has already begun to tinker with jewelry. “She has her own bench in our design shop, where she has been experimenting with creating pieces,” he says. It looks like the third Yurman generation is already preparing to join the family business.

W hat makes a jewelry collection great is that extra spark of creativity, it is indicative of a designer who sees the world through a special lens. When Roberto Coin looks at a glorious garden, he sees diamonds set in flower patterns. When he looks at great architecture, he sees a cuff bracelet in hand-finished gold. He is inspired by travel, culture, the oceans, the animal kingdom, and by the beautiful women who wear his jewelry. ROBERTO COIN JEWELRY INSPIRED BY THE BEAUTY THAT SURROUNDS US

This year, Roberto was inspired by the culture and climate of the Navarre region of northern Spain, a beautiful area dotted with vineyards and olive groves, charming villages, and Gothic cathedrals. The capital, Pamplona, is famous for its Running of the Bulls. The NAVARRA COLLECTION is classic yet modern, in the same way that Navarre is a mix of modern and ancient cultures. It is based on a distinctive pattern of intertwined solid links, interpreted as gorgeous gold bangles trimmed with diamonds or lariat-style necklaces with ruby-trimmed toggle clasps.

28 REIS-NICHOLS JEWELERS MAGAZINE

The DUCHESSA COLLECTION is where Roberto’s mastery of surface finishing on gold comes to the fore. The lush, large oval links are hand-finished with a textured sheen that causes them to shimmer as you move. They are joined by horizontal links set with diamonds in a floral pattern that is definitely recognizable as a member of the Roberto Coin design aesthetic. The doorknocker earrings in this collection are the showstopper of the season!

S ethi Couture was founded in 2009 in San Francisco by designing sisters Pratima and Prerna Sethi with a simple philosophy of “Elevate the Everyday.” Raised by parents who are purveyors of rare and unusual diamonds, Pratima and Prerna were surrounded by the most exquisite stones at an early age, so their childhood included an education in antique, vintage cuts, and rare natural-color diamonds. Careers in traditional jewelry, however, were not immediately in their stars. Instead, they set out on different paths.

SETHI COUTURE’S PRATIMA & PRERNA ARE COMMITTED TO CREATING TIMELESS PIECES THAT CELEBRATE YOUR PERSONAL STORY. ELEVATE the EVERYDAY

After receiving her MBA, Pratima began a career with a luxury brand and Prerna, who originally studied architecture, changed course to pursue an interest in fashion. Eventually fate intervened, and their desire to design elevated everyday jewelry essentials with the same diamonds they grew up admiring could not be ignored. The sisters came together to form Sethi Couture, and in 2009 they launched their first collection of fine jewelry. Right from its initial launch, Sethi Couture debuted a series of diamond bands in unexpected colors, including champagne, pink, green, yellow, and black. This unique assortment quickly evolved into a collection of classic and contemporary stacking bands that can be worn together in endless ways to showcase each wearer’s individual style. Each Sethi Couture band tells your story— your past, present, and future that can be cherished every day.

From her studio in Cleveland, Ohio, Heather B. Moore’s journey begins with love, laughter, and family, with stories reflected in personalized jewelry. “Telling a story is not a trend,” says Heather. “It’s a keepsake—an heirloom. It’s one-of-a-kind, just like the person wearing it.” Heather combines her talent for storytelling with a passion for the arts. Her talented artisans capture a person’s story, letting the wearer embrace what shaped them along the way. WITH LOVE FROM CLEVELAND, OHIO Heather B. Moore manufactures their own steel stamps, allowing their in-house steel shop to create tooling that can replicate a personal signature, sketch, logo, child’s drawing—almost anything you can imagine. Their craftspeople use a freehand technique where each letter, number, and symbol is hand stamped. This method allows them to give every piece a unique personality to match the wearer. Along with charms, the collection includes earrings, chains, bracelets, rings, and accessories, most of which are available in various combinations of sterling silver and yellow, rose, white, and green gold.

Race to ROOT & BONE IndyCar’s James Hinchcliffe’s southern-style eatery takes the checkered flag.

BY BRIAN GARRIDO

W hen I first stepped into Root & Bone to meet with Indy- Car driver, racing analyst, and part owner of the popular eatery, James Hinchcliffe, it had only just opened. I was warmly greeted by the perpetually charming staff and as the after- noon progressed into dinner service, the indoor and outdoor patio jammed with diners eating braised short rib meatloaf, fried chicken brined in sweet tea, or barbecue brûléed spareribs. Root & Bone first opened in early 2020 and subsequently weathered one of the most disruptive periods the hospitality world has ever experienced—the global pandemic. Now, after more than two years, Hinchcliffe and his partners, chefs Janine Booth and Jeff McInnis feel as if they are finally settled. As a testament to its deliciousness, one of Indianapolis’ best chef-driven and independent restaurants continues to delight eaters, thus making reservations a requirement. FROM RACING TO RESTAURANTS Hinchcliffe, 35, sits at the bar, giving off West Coast-style vibes in a light gray traveler’s coat and close-cropped beard. The Canadian-born driver stands out from the normal crowd and looks red carpet-ready with his actor wife, Becky Dalton. (You may have seen her in the Hall- mark Channel original comedy-drama series “Good Witch”). James would not be out of place sipping martinis at one of L.A.’s celebrated celebrity watering holes such as The Grill on the Alley or maybe the BOA Steakhouse at Chateau Marmont. Instead? He’s throwing back an iced tea in the middle of the Midwest. So, how does a six-time race winner for Andretti Autosport and one of IndyCar’s most popular drivers become involved in a Southern dining experience in Central Indiana? When answering this query, he first laughs. “Well, first, I want to be clear that a bunch of people, including the chefs and (Indiana businessperson) Tom Collins, were involved. At the time, Tom and I were working on bringing Tim Horton’s (a Canadian restaurant chain) to the city. As we were trying to bring that project together, we then met with Jeff and Janine about opening a restaurant. The Horton project fell apart for various reasons, but this [Root & Bone] has been awesome.” The self-proclaimed mayor of “Hinchtown” explained that chef Jeff Mcinnis’ grandmother was from the South and the partners originally wanted to create something within that vein that was gourmet. While giving credit to the husband-and-wife cooking team for the success of the restaurant’s menu, Hinchcliffe’s main prowess lies within

The duo was determined to bring south- ern hospitality to NYC’s East Village and the restaurant gained instant success and earned several food-related accolades. In 2019, the pair opened a Root & Bone in Miami before opening their third location in the Hoosier State in January 2020. CHEF-DRIVEN CHAMPS

the marketing realm of the business. It is entirely understandable why James is the “face” of the eatery’s Indy outpost, I mean, the man has a high-wattage smile that would make even George Clooney jealous. Plus, he foxtrots as well as Fred Astaire—displayed by his second-place finish on the 23rd season of the immensely popular television competition series, Dancing with the Stars . Along with Root & Bone’s ingenious fare, Hinchcliffe’s touch of stardom continues to bring patrons from around the state. Of course, with all this talk about great eats, I must ask what his favorite dishes on the menu are. “The fried chicken in sweet tea brine is so juicy and flavorful. It is topped with a honey Tabasco,” he begins. “The ribs are unlike anything I have eaten before. Tender and they fall right off the bone. Absolutely phenomenal.” As he speaks, he is shaking his head as if he can taste the dishes at this very moment. FOOD-FOCUSED FROM THE START James Hinchcliffe was born in Oakville, Ontario, a town about 45 minutes south of Toronto. From a very early age, he knew that racing was in his blood and, with that, a call for adventure.

looked for interesting business opportunities that piqued my interest outside of my sport. Your earning potential as a driver is pretty short.” Along with his racing-related endeavors, Hinchcliffe wants to continue his success in the food game. While Root & Bone may be his debut in dining, the collaboration with his current team isn’t stopping there. In the middle of 2020, the partners ventured up north into Portage, Indiana’s Another Round Pizza and Beer. About the restaurant, James explains, “It’s all about the pizza and craft beer. It’s artisanal pizza with excellent ingredients. Some offer gourmet twists with items you might not see on a traditional pizza, like corn or a hot honey drizzle.” As James and I wind down our chat and I thank him for his time, I notice that the restaurant is already half full at 5:00 p.m. on a Monday night and is steadily getting busier. As I leave, the smells of fried chicken and biscuits waft through the air while the door swings, again and again, with incoming hungry pa- trons who crave the fare and atmosphere that Root & Bone is known for.

When I asked James if he comes from a food-focused family, he replied “I grew up with a British father, and so food for him was meat, potatoes, and fish and chips. My mom did a bit of cooking at the house, but we traveled a lot. I was racing and on the road by the time I was around 12 years old. We went around to a lot of places, and we ate at a lot of restaurants. I kind of got an appreciation for food, trying different kinds of cuisines and experiences.” “Growing up my favorite cuisine was Italian, and I shared this love with my dad,” Hinchcliffe says. “Because I was so fortunate to get to travel a lot, I experienced a little bit of everything. When I first came to the States, I learned about Southern cooking, which is not really something there’s a lot of in Canada. It’s funny because the concept we landed on [with Root & Bone] was food I knew little about. During the time he spent traveling and dining abroad, James explained that he began to think about how he would approach the restaurant industry. He started to understand business and hospitality operations and would frequently ask himself what he would do differently. What parts would he focus on to make it even better? Hinchliffe continues, “For me, and throughout my career, I have

FUN IN FUNCHAL Funchal cascades down steep hillsides towards the glistening blue sea, and since our arrival a few hours ago, we have already explored some of the narrow steep roads. We lay back as the car propelled us upward and held our breath as we swept downhill — often with stone walls on either side and a hair’s breadth between car and stone. Here and there we found viewpoints where we stopped to admire the vista spread out below. Tropical flowers were still in bloom, and they added splashes of bright color to the scene. Feeling hungry after an early flight, we stopped for refreshment in town at Rei da Poncha. We ordered mammoth hot dogs with the traditional poncha, a strong alcoholic drink made with distilled alcohol derived from sugar cane, honey, and lemon juice. It is always accompanied with peanuts, and here they were served in tubs. One of Madeira’s most famous attractions is the famous wicker sledge ride, which takes tourists at hair-raising speed down narrow streets, from Monte to the city below. The sledges are pushed by two men dressed in traditional white with straw boaters, who use their boots as breaks. Originally, in the 19th century,

the sledges were used to transport locals, but today they transport tourists like us. With the wind in our faces as we compete with crossing cars at intersections, the experience is, at the very least, memorable. A more leisurely ride from the hills above Funchal can be had by cable car. As usual, we had to be unconventional and take the journey in reverse. This meant great sweeping views from our own car on our way up, as well as amazing vistas from the cable car on the way down. Another must-see is the farmers market in the center of town. Here the flower sellers are dressed in the national costume. Their hats resemble a piece of fruit cut in half with a sprig protruding from the top. This market also offers a wide variety of local fruits and vegetables, many unknown to us. There are aromatic herbs and spices, vegetables, meat, wines, and local crafts. In the little bakery I had the best Portuguese tart I have ever tasted. Flaky and warm from the oven.

TRAVELING EAST Breakfast was in a little restaurant overlooking the colorful fishing boats in Câmara de Lobos, a village just outside Funchal. A place much favored by Winston Churchill, Câmara de Lobos is where he loved to paint. The picturesque boats and scenery are in direct contrast to the black scabbardfish they catch here at night. Often referred to as “monsters from the deep,” due to their rows of sharp teeth, they are extremely ugly but considered a wonderful fish to eat and are often served with passion fruit and banana sauce. A short journey along the coast leads to a glass walkway at the top of the towering Cabo Girao, allowing visitors to walk out and admire the stunning vistas.

A rainbow formed overhead, so we drove up the nearby hillside to get a better view. There were many eucalyptus trees and the air was heavy with their pungent scent. Further along the coast, we traveled through a rock tunnel, which made its exit onto a road where a waterfall plunged onto the pavement from the lofty rocks above. Many visitors stopped to dance, joyfully in the cascading water. TRAVELING WEST Eventually, we traveled west from Funchal to Quinta do Lorde. The terrain became frilly, and smooth porous stones of various colors littered the landscape. A couple of small vans along the way displayed beautiful handmade artwork.

Continuing to Semana, famous for its historical tiny A-framed houses with straw roofs. We were delighted by a woman spinning yarn for her handcrafts in one of the A-frame houses and in another enjoyed the homemade cakes and biscuits. The flavor of home baking far exceeded the usual tourist offerings. We received some interesting baking instructions using local ingredients, like the syrup from the sugarcane — often referred to has honey cane — and used in the island’s traditional madeira cake. Here too they sold Madeira wine, and we learned that a five-year-aged bottled goes well with savory dishes and a ten-year-old with desserts.

INTO THE MOUNTAINS The levadas, narrow channels of water which slope from the humid north to the drier south, were first built in the sixteenth century. Energizing walks following the levadas offer magnificent panoramic views and opportunities to enjoy nature at its best. Some of the most interesting viewpoints on these expeditions could be found on Pico Arieiro and Pico Ruivo, two of the area’s highest peaks. The micro climate here places you above the clouds, which was a truly enchanting experience. We returned to Funchal along a route which was, at times, shrouded in mist where temperatures plummeted. We stopped for refreshment at a rustic timber restaurant, a place akin to a ski lodge with blazing log fires. It seemed so bizarre when not far away, down in Funchal it was warm and sunny. Here, we enjoyed a cheese and sausage platter with all the accompaniments that was fantastic.

As we continued toward the capital, small hamlets with terraces of cultivation began to appear, and the verges on either side were edged with hydrangeas for mile after mile. Later, we entered banana-growing country. The giant bunches of fruit looked almost ready to harvest. Traveling on, we encountered several gushing waterfalls en route to the north shores of the island, where great waves of the Atlantic Ocean pounded the coast. We stopped for coffee and encountered strange alien-looking plants hanging in giant loops. Further along the coast, we visited the natural swimming pools at Porto Maniche, which are formed by volcanic lava and filled with crystal-clear sea water from the Atlantic. Paths and walkways connect the pools, so it is possible to swim in one and easily move THE PICTURESQUE NORTHERN COAST

to another. They vary in size and depth. There is also a children’s play area, changing rooms and bathrooms with lockers for storing personal items, and a restaurant on site. We spent quite a bit of time here delighted in the unique ambiance. ETERNAL SPRINGTIME One of the greatest things about Madeira is the diversity of experiences available, with colorful tropical vegetation and a wonderful climate year-round. There is also a packed calendar of events, from the flower festival in the summer to the fireworks display at New Year’s, which has been heralded as one of the must-see displays in the world.

Color is now a mainstay in designer collections, but its execution has become so much more. What was initially just an accent color on a traditional white gown has now become the focus. Where blush was the go-to color for brides, blue has been playing a much bigger role this season. Color has been featured in layers of tulle, as a background to a floral print, or as the key design element in a dress. Once you decide to go with color, have fun and be open to all the ways you can showcase your personality—including accenting it with colored gemstone jewelry.

Gowns with sheer lace panels and layers of sheer tulle are a bridal classic, but today’s designers are enabling brides to decide how much or little to show. This trend can be captured in a variety of scene-stealing ways that puts you in control of your story. From the sultry illusion dress that creates a dramatic silhouette to tamer options like high slits and open backs, there is something for everyone. Whatever you choose, wear it with confidence and let your beauty be revealed.

ROLEX DEBUTS 2022

R olex just keeps getting better and better. This year’s introductions include a new GMT-MASTER II with its crown in a novel position, a yellow gold YACHT-MASTER 42 (yellow gold watches are hot!), a redesigned OYSTER PERPETUAL AIR-KING , and a groovy floral DATEJUST 31 — four new models to lust after, destined to be future collector’s pieces.

The great novelty of the new GMT-MASTER II is the position of the crown and the cyclops date window on the left, with the crown facing toward the hand. Rolex lefty models are a rarity (as they are from most brands), and this one is exceptional. The green and black color combination is exclusive to this line, and it’s worth noting that two-tone Cerachrom itself is rare. Rolex introduced its proprietary ceramic formula in 2013, and it is only used on certain sports models. The watch has the model’s signature Cyclops lens magnified date window and the option of either a Jubilee or Oyster bracelet.

The OYSTER PERPETUAL AIR-KING , Rolex’s tribute to explorers of the skies, has been updated this year. It’s still the same 40 mm size, with the satin brushed Oyster bracelet and EasyLink Oyster clasp, and it still has the beloved black dial with signature green lettering and seconds hand. The case, however, has been redesigned. Now, it has straight sides—like the majority of the brand’s professional category watches—as well as a crown guard. The applied numerals are now filled with Chromalight, Rolex’s proprietary luminescent material, which makes the watch more legible. Another big difference is that now there is a 0 before the 5 on the minutes scale, so each five-minute interval is marked by two digits. The Air-King was originally launched in 1958.

The YACHT-MASTER 42 is special for many reasons, but there is something extra magical about the combination of black dial and yellow gold case found on the new model. It adds an infusion of classic elegance to this otherwise sporty line. The model is easily recognizable for its bidirectional rotatable 60-minute graduated bezel made entirely from precious metal or fitted with a Cerachrom insert in high-technology ceramic. Like the Oyster Perpetual Air King, the hour markers and the hands in this new watch are also optimized with Chromalight, which makes them visible in the dark, and even in daylight, they have a brighter white hue. It contains the Rolex caliber 3235, and like all Rolex watches, it carries the Superlative Chronometer certification, which ensures excellent performance on the wrist. The Yacht-Master 42 is also available in white gold.

The dial of the new ROLEX DATEJUST 31 is embellished with a floral motif in a choice of azzuro blue (with a fluted bezel), olive green, or silver (both with diamond bezels). Lovers of detail will note the combination of matte, sunray, and grained finishes on each flower, a subtle way of differentiating each one. Also, the center of each flower is set with a diamond. These dials are decorative enough to make them feminine and unique, yet not flashy or overly feminine. As usual, Rolex gets the balance just right.
