DAVID YURMAN

a natural

As a child, David Yurman stole moments for himself, often playing hooky to wander to his favorite spot in the woods: An area with large trees and cable vines strong enough to swing from. Little did he know at the time, but David Yurman was creating memories he would later recall, in order to sculpt some of the most iconic jewelry designs in the world. In its primary form, cable is found throughout all of nature’s designs. And this spring, David Yurman is celebrating cable’s connection with art, technology, and nature as he reinvisions the foundation of his legendary jewelry collection.

CABLE EDGE After almost forty years, Cable remains at the heart of David Yurman’s designs, changing, adapting, and evolving, all while remaining a constant staple for the designer. This year, Cable, his artistic signature, is getting a new formation.

Cable Edge ring with black diamonds, $1,750.

Cable Edge is based not on multiple wires, but on one forged, rectangular shape that is torqued, which echoes early metal pieces that David’s son, Evan, created. Offered for both men and women, these boldly modern designs are crafted from recycled sterling silver or yellow gold with hand-set diamonds carefully plotted to amplify Cable Edge’s fluting.

Cable Edge cuff with black diamond, $2,200.

CHEVRON David Yurman skillfully reinterprets chevron — the ancient V-shaped pattern used in architecture and art — in this modern, sculptural collection. Always willing to experiment, David Yurman offers Chevron rubber bracelets this year that stand out from all the rest with new engineering and interchangeable clasps. Tough, durable, and well-crafted, these essential pieces are accented with Yurman’s iconic chevron motif — a mirror image of Cable — adding artistry and meaning to these functional designs.

LEANNE WEBB M E E T F I N K ’ S O W N

Sales Professional, The Shops at Hilltop • Virginia Beach, VA • (757) 640-1132 • Leanne.Webb@finks.com Leanne Webb celebrates 20 years of service here at Fink’s Jewelers this year! Over the years, she’s celebrated many milestones with clients, including engagements, anniversaries, and births. Now, we’re celebrating her!

I have been in the jewelery industry in the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area for over 39 years. So, when it comes to picking out specific special moments with clients, it’s difficult. But, perhaps the most special part about working at Fink’s Jewelers for the past 20 years is that I’ve had the chance to sell engagement rings to clients, then to their children, and now, I’m selling to some of their grandchildren. The Design that Stands Out Recently, a gentleman whom I’ve known since before he could see over our jewelry cases, got engaged and wanted to create a special ring for his fiancé. He wanted to incorporate a diamond from his grandmother’s piece in the new design. We were also able to use the family diamonds to make a very special ring that he could give to his fiancé. Proud to Be a Part of Fink’s Fink’s is just a special place and a special family. To be a part of a fourth-generation jeweler that’s well respected in the community is something special. Working at Fink’s not only allows me to sell beautiful jewelry, but it also affords me the opportunity to get out and be involved in causes like supporting the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters. A love for Italian I like my Italian men, so I really love Roberto Coin and Marco Bicego. I love yellow gold and all of its richness and warmth, and the Italians do it the best! Marco Bicego’s jewelery is all hand-made and has a softer finish to it, while Roberto Coin is more traditional, classic, and very distinctive. It’s All About Family I could talk about my daughter and my grandson for days. My daughter is a wonderful woman who teaches fifth grade and is extremely passionate about what she does. She’s given me the love of my life — My grandson, who is just brilliant and very sweet. He’s amazing to watch, and the way he thinks things through with such an imagination is fascinating! Something You Didn’t Know I paint. I do acrylic pouring, and I paint on glass — on glass ornaments and glass stemware. I also make ornaments every year for my co-workers and other special people in my life. A couple of my paintings are even featured here in the store. Painting is how I release stress and tension, and my home is filled with more than 100 of my original pieces. When I’m waiting for my paintings to dry, my husband and I play music. We have a band, and we used to go to different places around town and play in the bars.

SHERRY GILMORE M E E T F I N K ’ S O W N Diamond Expert, Birkdale Village • Huntersville, NC • (704) 927-4888 • Sherry.Gilmore@finks.com

I am a new face at Fink’s Jewelers in Birkdale Village, but I have been in the jewelry industry for nearly 30 years. I’ve known the Fink’s family through being in the industry. So, when I felt like it was time for me to start on a new path, the first place that popped into my mind was Fink’s. I feel extremely blessed to be working here with such a prestigious family-owned jeweler. Something I’ve Never Experienced Before The work-life balance at Fink’s is something I’ve never seen before in a company — and they’re still getting the job done. There is such peace here, and when clients come in, they know we’re going to listen, and we’re going to make the experience like no other, whether they purchase or not. A Love for Luxury At my previous employer, I didn’t have the chance to sell a lot of the brands that Fink’s carries. But now I love the luxury watches, and the jewelry by David Yurman, Roberto Coin, and John Hardy. I love the spirituality behind those brands. I also love the fact that Fink’s stands firm on providing the best and highest quality diamonds to all its customers, regardless of each customer’s budget. Helping Others Find Healing About three years ago, I lost my 23-year-old son. I have learned to take my pain and use it to help other people. I get to talk to clients all the time about how I’ve been able to heal and give them pointers on how they can get through the same thing or something similar. What worked for me during that time was diving into my spirituality and recognizing that my son is still here with me, even though he’s no longer physically present.

Mother’s Day is Extra Special The first Mother’s Day after my son had passed, I went to the ocean. On my way home, something sparked the idea in me to send 100 mothers 7 mm pearl earrings for Mother’s Day from their child. So, I created an email address called Not Forgotten 100, and I gave it to everyone I knew, so they could share it with a mother who had lost a child. Then, the week of Mother’s Day, I boxed up 120 pairs of pearl earrings and sent them all over the country, along with two pairs to other countries. I didn’t put my name on them, because I wanted them to feel like they had received a gift from their child. That year, I got to sit on my couch, smile, and feel peace. So, that is just one way I’ve been able to deal with my pain — By helping others deal with theirs. And I plan on doing something, again, this year. I just don’t know what yet. But I’ll always gift a pair of pearls to someone, if I feel led to do so.

Rolex Testimonee Jon Rahm celebrates holing the winning putt on the 72nd hole at the 121st U.S. Open.

Rolex’s enduring relationship with the world of golf began more than 50 years ago when Arnold Palmer became the brand’s first golf Testimonee. He was quickly joined by Testimonees Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player. Together they became known as The Big Three, and they changed the face of golf forever. In 1967, Rolex gifted Jack Nicklaus with a yellow gold Rolex Day- Date, Reference 1803, and it became his

go-to watch. The Day-Date was the first waterproof, selfwinding wristwatch to feature a day display fully spelled out on the dial. Its tapered and faceted baton hour markers are reminiscent of golf tees, and its President bracelet is iconic. In 2019, after wearing his Day-Date during 12 of his record 18 professional major championship titles, Nicklaus sold the watch at a Phillips auction, donating the $1.22-million proceeds to the

Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation. “It was the first watch I ever owned, and the only watch I wore for every professional tournament I’ve won throughout my career,” said Nicklaus. “It has accompanied me at U.S. Opens, The Masters tournaments, PGA Championships, The Open championships, and countless other events for over five decades, and has served me well at every step along the way.”

Rolex became both the official and unofficial watch of golf, as champion after champion donned the brand for their conquests on the course. In the 1980s, Rolex added The Open and U.S. Open to its growing number of partners, as well as the guardians of the game, The R&A and USGA. Since 2000, the depths of these relationship has developed further and grown to support the development of golf excellence worldwide. From elite players and golf legends to the game’s major championships, Rolex is ever- present, in support of the Masters Tournament at Augusta National, the PGA Championship, U.S. Open, The Open tournament held in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, the Amundi Evian Championship, the Solheim Cup and the Ryder Cup. Rolex’s support for the game is built on a strong sense of integrity and respect for tradition that ensures the continuity of expertise and knowledge, while understanding the importance of investing in the development of the sport for future generations.

More research is being done on the benefits relating to diabetes and cancer prevention but we certainly know tea can be part of a healthy eating pattern. For the most powerful punch, steep your own tea and be mindful of how it is sweetened in order to limit sources of added sugars.

Did you know nearly half the U.S. population enjoys a tea beverage every day? Black tea is the most popular in the states, green tea is most commonly enjoyed in Asia and oolong tea is favored in China. However you might not know all are derived from the same plant. The unique flavor profiles for each of these teas are due to differences in how the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant are processed. Herbal teas, however, are not made from the same plant. These teas are products of the roots, leaves, flowers and other components from a variety of plants. Chamomile and peppermint are two popular herbal teas. Natural substances, called polyphenols, are found in both caffeinated and herbal teas. These substances are antioxidants, compounds that may help reduce the risk of certain chronic diseases. Research suggests that green teas offer a greater antioxidant punch compared to most other varieties.

If you or yours are heading off to college in the fall, it’s time to consider investing in a grown-up timepiece for the occasion. Something celebratory yet functional. Something that goes with jeans and a backpack but will also look good at a first job interview. It should be robust enough for a late-night frat party, and have a power reserve that will keep it running long enough to get you to that Monday morning class on time. Here are some watches to take you through the higher learning curve and beyond. campustimekeepers THE PERFECT WATCH TO WEAR I N THE PURSU I T OF H I GHER EDUCAT I ON

THE BREITLING ENDURANCE PRO combines the robustness of a chronograph sports watch with the bold colors of a fashion watch, and because of its lightweight Breitlight case, it feels like a feather on the wrist. It contains a SuperQuartz movement and a recycled Econyl strap.

The robust titanium case can withstand the rigors of any frat party, and there is plenty of lume to help you count the minutes in a dark lecture hall. The 70-hour power reserve means you can go a whole weekend without winding it.

Y O GA THE MANY BENEFITS OF

STAYING IN SHAPE AND FEELING GREAT

Celebrities like Jennifer Aniston, Sting, Adam Levine, Jessica Biel, Kate Hudson, Jennifer Lopez, and David Beckham can all attest that the benefits of yoga willtake years off your appearance, give your body the muscle tone you’ve always wanted, and help reduce the anxiety associated with the stressful world we live in these days.

36 ] F I N K ’ S J E W E L E R S M A G A Z I N E

Over 15 million Americans (both male and female) practice yoga each year. Contrary to popular belief, yoga is not just a bunch of stretching and breathing exercises. Nor is it too easy or too “girly.” It’s a legitimate workout — one that intensely works both the body and mind. It’s a hard-core discipline that boasts seemingly endless benefits. And below, you’ll find just a few of the most powerful ones, broken down into two categories: physical and mental.

THE PHYSICAL Increased Strength — Several variations of yoga and their respective poses require you to support your bodyweight in very unique angles and positions. And this support must sometimes last for several minutes. This necessary support naturally strengthens your muscle groups, along with your core.

THE MENTAL Reduces Anxiety and Depression — There are several ways that yoga has been linked to reduced anxiety levels and depression prevention. The exercises themselves help reduce stress levels in the body, and the socialization and meditation aspects of yoga have effectively aided in lessening the impact of depression. Improves Concentration — For thousands of years yoga has been practiced to quiet the inner self, slowing down a person’s thoughts while decreasing their mental clutter. Just one session can allow a person to be more focused and less distracted throughout the day. Improves Self-Discipline — The very act of sticking to a regular yoga routine naturally increases self- discipline. However, the process

Fat Loss — Yoga is very efficient at burning calories. One session of Vinyasa yoga can burn up to 594 calories, while a basic beginner yoga session can burn anywhere from 100 - 400 calories. Muscle Tone — A by-product of increasing your strength and burning fat, toned muscles give you that attractive

physical appearance we all secretly want. Add to that the long, smooth muscle definition and you have the ingredients for a body to drool over. Steel sports watches have dominated wrist wear trends for the past few years, relegating gold watches to the background, or saved for special occasions. Well, the classic gold watch is making a comeback, and it’s better and more robust than ever. From sports watches and dress watches to ladies day-to-evening pieces, the warm, noble metal is showing up on all the most stylish wrists this season.

THE CLASSIC GOLD WATCH MAKES A DRAMATIC STATEMENT

ROLEX OYSTER PERPETUAL DAY-DATE A true classic never goes out of style. The yellow gold Day-Date, first introduced in 1956, has become legendary over the years. It is instantly recognizable for its iconic fluted bezel, President’s bracelet, and cyclops lens over the date window. This 36mm model in 18k yellow gold contains the Rolex-made caliber 3255, a state-of- the-art movement with 14 patents and a precision rating of -2/+2 per day.

Alloys make gold harder and more scratch resistant than ever. Here are some of two favorite new gold watches.

ROLEX LADY-DATEJUST This 28 mm Oyster Perpetual Lady-Datejust in 18k yellow gold features a white mother-of-pearl, diamond-set dial and a President bracelet.

Gold has always been the “gold” standard in timepieces. As a precious metal, it has intrinsic value — it retains its worth and can be a way of passing on wealth. Gold is a soft metal, which makes it easy to work with — it’s easy to form into specific shapes, easy to engrave, and it makes a great surface for gemsetting. Refiners mitigate the softness by alloying it with other metals. The standard in watch and jewelry manufacturing is 18k gold, which is 75 percent gold and 25 percent other alloys. Yellow gold is mixed with silver, copper, and zinc. Red gold has varying amounts of copper, and white gold contains nickel, palladium, and silver and is usually rhodium-coated to keep it white.

BALLON BLEU DE CARTIER

This 40 mm rose gold watch is a modern classic that works on any

sized wrist, for any occasion. Signature design codes include a date window at 3 o’clock, next to a recessed crown, topped by a sapphire cabochon, along with Cartier’s iconic Roman numerals and blued-steel sword-shaped hands. It contains the Cartier automatic caliber 1847 MC, and has a silvered guilloché dial and interchangeable bracelet.

OMEGA DE VILLE TRÉSOR With its wonderful diamond paving curved along each side of the slender, 36 mm Sedna™ gold case and a crown set with a single diamond and polished with red “HyCeram”, this watch is truly elegant. The clean white dial plays host to beautifully styled Roman numerals

and elegant Sedna™ gold hands, while a complementary gray leather strap provides comfort and security. Driven by the high-precision Omega calibre 4061 quartz movement and water resistant to 30 meters, this high performance timepiece is protected by an anti-glare, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal lens.

BREITLING SUPER CHRONOMAT The Super Chronomat is a true sports watch, with chronograph and countdown functions, 200-meter water resistance and a scratch-resistant ceramic bezel. It is also a distinctive style statement, with an 18k red gold case and rouleaux style bracelet with rounded, tube-like gold links, paired with a rich, brown dial and bezel. It is driven by the Breitling Manufacture Caliber 01, with a 70 hour power reserve.

“Champagne Poodle” by Greg Lotus

Having worked in the music, fashion, jewelry, and automotive industries for the past 33 years, I’ve had the opportunity to meet and work with some amazingly talented photographers. In my line of work, designing with great photography makes all the difference. I learned this early in my career, when I won awards for album cover design. Was the design good? In my opinion, it was, but I had to keep it simple. What spoke volumes was the photography of guys like Mark Tucker and Russ Harrington. I learned not to get in the way of beautiful images that told the story all by itself.

Early this year I was introduced to Greg Lotus by a friend of mine who felt Greg would be a good fit, as he had worked with many world-class brands we work with. Greg and I traded emails, and it quickly became apparent that he is more than just a guy who can shoot some rings, bracelets, and necklaces for us. Greg Lotus has shot some of the most extraordinary images for Vogue Italia , GQ , L’Uomo Vogue , Vanity Fair , and W, as well as commercial campaigns for the likes of Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Escada. Now we’re talking! Not only that, he also exhibits his fine art images in New York and Miami. His work takes him all over the world.

Greg has a flair for the dramatic. He shoots from unique angles, playing off contrasting shadows and intense light. His graphic approach

was perfect for black and white photography. Demand for his images by private collectors prompted this talented man to sell his work to an eager, new audience. As his exposure grew, so too did requests for vivid colorful images. You can only imagine how impactful his work would be in a New York loft or Miami Beach penthouse. Exquisite!

Nature is a recurrent motif in Greg’s photography — a clear echo of his childhood. He often mixes high fashion with rural or wild surroundings and includes exotic animals in his compositions, using elements that link the rarefied atmosphere of the fashion industry to the organic beauty of the natural world. Like a gifted Olympic athlete, Greg has something you can’t teach — talent. He is completely self-taught. You might not think this West Virginia native would find himself in the land of glamour, but early exposure to the

modeling world, as a model for Ford Models, gave Greg an inside glimpse into how photographers achieved their excellence. Perhaps more importantly, it made Greg more aware of what the model went through, as well as what to expect from the very best. I learned early on that teamwork makes the dream work. Ok, that is a very corny line, but it is so true — especially when it comes to shooting stunning, evocative, if not erotic, images. Greg credits the work of the stylist, hair, and makeup artists; a good concept; and of course, a very good subject. Granted, shooting the likes of Eva Longoria, Penelope Cruz, Megan Fox, Milla Jovovich, Kate Beckinsale, Katy Perry, Channing Tatum, Kim Kardashian, and Mary J. Blige, to name a few, makes his job easier, but the team and concept allow Greg to bring it all to a crescendo.

WITH EACH BEAUTIFUL PIECE OF ROBERTO COIN JEWELRY, FINDING THE RUBY IS USUALLY THE FIRST TASK AT HAND. ROBERTOCOIN’S signature hidden ruby

The ruby has always been enveloped in a legendary aura, and due to its exceptional quality of maintaining beauty throughout time it is considered eternal, like true love. According to an ancient belief, wearing a ruby close to the skin promoted long life, health and happiness and even today it is believed to possess these magic powers including the extraordinary ability of giving peace.

In 1996, Roberto Coin started signing his jewels by setting a small ruby hidden on the inside of each piece, allowing the distinguished gem to kiss the skin. Since then, this tradition has become the exclusive signature of every jewel by Roberto Coin, dedicated as a secret gift of good wishes to every woman lucky enough to wear one of his exclusive creations.

DUBAI OOZES OPULENCE AND LUXURY AND OWES ITS PRESENT EXISTENCE TO ITS OIL RESOURCES. ITS LEADERS HOWEVER REALIZED THAT IT WAS NOT A COMMODITY THAT WOULD LAST FOREVER AND FOR MANY YEARS THEY HAVE USED THEIR WEALTH TO SECURE A MULTIPLICITY OF ACTIVITIES AND TRADING OPTIONS. CITY SCAPE From the moment you touch down in Dubai and leave the airport the urban landscape towers above on a grand scale. Every building seems to be in competition with the next as they strive to be bigger, better and more alluring then the next. Every hotel oozes luxury and it is difficult to find anywhere that does not excite and cocoon you. The city sits on a natural creek which divides it into two halves- Deidra to the north and Bur to the south. DUBAI CREEK Known as Al Khor in Arabic, the Creek was the base of the local fishing and pearling industries in the early 20th century and was dredged in 1961 to allow larger cargo vessels to dock. The first bridge, Al Maktoum Bridge, opened two years later. The extension in 2016 of the Dubai canal linked it to the Gulf. One of the most interesting ways to cross the creek is via a small boat called an abra. Dozens ferry folk back and forth for a very small sum and boatmen are also available to take you on a forty five minute journey to admire Dubai from the water. We took a much larger boat in the evening. It was one of many which were decked with lights to form a lighted boat parade. On the top deck we ate dinner while we enjoyed the views of the city by night. THE SOUKS These are to be found on both sides of the creek. They are traditional Arab markets full of atmosphere and if you can haggle, a good bargain. They are ordered according to what they sell. The most famous is the gold souk which is considered to be the largest gold bazaar in Arabia and one of the best places in the world to shop for fine jewellery, gold, silver and gemstones. The spice souk is an aromatic paradise and the colour and aroma are tantalising The perfume souk is filled with familiar scents in the most ornate of bottles. It’s back then across the water for the textile souk with its range of hand-woven and machine-made fabrics in cashmere, silk, cotton and wool.

BURJ AL ARAB Billowing like the sail of a dhow the Burg al Arab has come to symbolise Dubai. It is in the Jumeriah area which is flanked by idyllic sandy beaches. Designed by architect Tom Wright it sits on an artificial island. It was completed in 1999 and its 202 rooms are amongst the most expensive in the world. Its hospitality, service and sumptuous dining make it unique and are open to non-residents. Close to the Burg Arab a canal has been constructed and in its picturesque setting restaurants spill out onto the walk way with giant parasols. It is a great place to chill out and a boat ride on the bright blue water is a great way to spend some free time. BURJ KHALIFA Downtown Dubai is the city’s busy tourism hub and here you will find the tallest skyscraper in the world - the Burj Khalifa with its observation deck on level 125. From its dizzy height the view is exhilarating although on some days its sheer height causes clouds to collect around it. In

the evening we gathered with others at its base to watch the exhilarating fountain display choreographed to music, its many jets shoot water as high as a 50-story building. Designed by creators of the Fountains of Bellagio in Vegas, Dubai fountain is an amazing experience. SHOPPING MALLS

There are so many shopping malls in Dubai that it is impossible to visit them all. They compete for your attention by offering amazing additions. One even has a ski slope. It easily surpassed any indoor skiing experience I had previously encountered. Everything you could ever need can be found in them. Take your pick and shop till you drop.

THE PALM Jutting into the calm turquoise waters of the Arabian Gulf is a manmade archipelago built in the shape of a palm tree. It can easily be reached via the city’s excellent mono rail system. Its trunk is 3 miles long and its fan of fronds are lined with luxury villas and five-star hotels. At its farthest point is its crown- the majestic Atlantis complex. Its footprint the size of 64 Wembley football pitches. It stands like something from a Disney movie and this pink hued resort houses not only accommodation but a water park, an aquarium, fine dining, a private beach and a shopping mall. I remember the ice cream parlour even provided a dimension of its own. Ice cream being thrown between two waiters and toppings juggled in a theatrical fashion as they were prepared for us.

58 ] F I N K ’ S J E W E L E R S M A G A Z I N E

DUNE BUGGY EXPERIENCE At some point most visitors to Dubai venture out into the desert. One option is the desire to go for an adrenalin fuelled experience in a dune buggy. You can opt to drive yourself or go with a driver as we did. Before our adventure began we stopped to let out air from the tires to make the buggy a safer ride. It was exciting and exhilarating as we charged at break neck speed up and down the dunes. We were well packed in which I think must have contributed to less movement from side to side but it didn’t prevent plenty of head banging on the bars above us. BEDOUIN FEAST These are popular and usually take place in the evening and by the time the sun has finally disappeared bright blazing torches mark the entrance to a Bedouin camp site. We visited one of these. On entry we were greeted with a strong Arabic coffee. Low tables draped with

colorful red and white patterned tablecloths were positioned round a performance area. On the soft sand, majlis style carpets and cushions replaced the need for chairs. The area was lit by bright lanterns which hung from poles wound with blue fairy lights. The Arabian feast consisted of barbecued meats and traditional Arab dishes dispensed buffet style from long tables round the perimeter of the camp. Falcons have played an important part in the traditional culture of the United Arab Emirates. Bedouins first started using them to hunt animals native to the region such as bustards and curlews. They are especially important because they can be trained to deliver their prey, without killing it first. It was not therefore surprising that these majestic birds were present with their handlers and guests were allowed to hold them and enjoy an up close introduction. When the tables had been cleared the entertainment got under way. It was exciting and flamboyant but the spinning Dervish dancer was the highlight. He spun for a full half hour, sending us into an hypnotic trance.
