Designers Rudy Leidenfrost & Brent Selke CELEBRATE TIME WELL SPENT AT REIS-NICHOLS

J ewelry designers Rudy Leidenfrost and Brent Selke are each commemorating 25 years of service at Indianapolis retailer Reis-Nichols Jewelers. This timely happenstance has led to a decades-long friendship that has enriched the workplace and the lives of the two artisans, who—in a twist of fate—started their jobs not only in the same year but on the same day! Reis-Nichols has helped define the Indianapolis skyline since 1919, when the Reis Company premiered downtown. The name was reimagined with its now well-known double surname in 1980, a few years after it was purchased by William Nichols, father of current CEO BJ Nichols. Today, under BJ’s direction, the family-owned company includes two locations in the greater Indianapolis area. The jeweler continues to grow with an ever-expanding collection of notable watches and exquisite custom-designed jewelry. “The company is very family-oriented and takes care of people like they are family,” says Rudy, the company’s lead diamond setter. He says he “fell into this business through a friend of a friend,” eventually landing at Reis-Nichols when he was about 30 years old after a successful stint with another Indianapolis jewelry company. Leidenfrost apprenticed in stone setting under the tutelage of a Nichols family member, and he knew early on that he’d found his vocation. He also found a steadfast colleague in Brent, with whom he “struck up a good friendship right out of the gate.” After graduating from Ball State College of Fine Arts with a focus on metals, Brent started apprenticing in Cincinnati. But when he had an opportunity to interview with BJ, he jumped at the chance to work at Reis-Nichols. Brent was thrilled to sign on with one of the fastest-growing jewelers currently hosting one of the country’s most expansive in-store jewelry manufacturing workshops. He, like Rudy, started as a bench jeweler, but Brent later specialized in CAD (Computer-Aided Design) as he discovered a particular interest in the burgeoning technology. Well known as an authorized retailer for a variety of internationally recognized luxury jewelry and watch brands, with

14 REIS-NICHOLS JEWELERS MAGAZINE

the help of jewelers like Rudy and Brent, Reis-Nichols has achieved an enviable reputation in the region and beyond for custom-designed jewelry. Whether creating engagement rings or other heirlooms of the future, the process starts with a consultation and only ends when a client’s vision has been perfectly realized— most often right in the workshops on the Reis-Nichols premises. “I enjoy working with customers and salespeople,” says Brent, Reis-Nichols’ Master CAD designer. “A customer will come in with an idea or photos, and then I’ll do a rendering and prototype models. I want to be sure I understand what the customer has in mind.” After the idea is manifested digitally, a 3D wax or resin likeness is produced and shared with the client for approval. “Brent is an amazing talent,” Jennifer Demmary, Vice President of Operations, explains. “He pioneered CAD design at Reis- Nichols and revolutionized the design experience. He and Rudy bring people’s vision to life. I can’t imagine a better duo to work with on a jewelry design!” “Rudy and I have worked together long enough now that I don’t have to ask him as many questions because I know how he likes the pieces made [in order to best set the stones],” the designer adds. “It makes communication pretty easy between us.” Reis-Nichols utilizes a variety of precious metals for its jewelry, and the jewelers hand-set stones to perfection, always pairing the size and cut with the optimal setting. Rudy adds that Brent executes impressive designs, and the stones—his [Rudy’s] specialty—bring the pieces to life. “I love getting into a job that may be ten or 12 hours of stone setting, taking a piece from a shell to its finished form,” Rudy explains. When asked about his favorite gemstone, he advised, “You can never go wrong with diamonds. They vary in shape, size, and quality, and they make me feel happy inside. Maybe because they’re part of the Earth.” Outside of work, the two have similarly contemplative outdoor interests—but there is one minor flaw in the seemingly ideal connection: an ongoing dispute about who has been “on the job” literal minutes longer than the other. This, we suspect, will likely remain amicably unresolved.

METRO-CHIC DAVID YURMAN’S NEW JEWELRY COLLECTION CONVEYS DOWNTOWN NEW YORK’S LIVELY ARTISTIC ENERGY

D avid Yurman is constantly sketching new jewelry designs, sometimes on a napkin at a café and other times at his desk or the kitchen table. Those drawings were the starting point for the brand’s stylish new Mercer collection, which was inspired by downtown New York’s bustling rhythm and artistic energy and named for the street in SoHo. For the Yurman family, every jewelry collection is a personal expression. The Mercer collection pays homage to David and his wife Sybil’s downtown roots. In SoHo, they began their careers as artists: back in the 1960s and 1970s, they were among the neighborhood’s early residents—David’s first studio was on Sullivan Street and Sybil worked at the Max Hutchinson Gallery on Greene Street. Their son Evan, the company’s president, grew up on the streets of SoHo and along the Tribeca waterfront. “There was something carefree but still endearingly grave about the work that came from there then,” said Evan about the downtown artistic vibe. “The work ignored the old boundaries separating art from dance from music from architecture, and instead found fresh ground in the interstices between art and life.” The neighborhood’s dynamic energy fueled the family’s lasting passion for art, design and craft, and breaking boundaries.

Evan Yurman

DESIGN IS A FAMILY AFFAIR Each member of the family has creative input on every new collection. That family spirit caught the attention of actress Scarlett Johansson, another native New Yorker and the brand’s ambassador. “What’s really touching about the David Yurman story is this familial love and passion,” said Johansson. Recently, she layered on different jewelry pieces, which Sybil pointed out were each designed by one of the Yurmans. “Sybil was so excited to see the pieces all together,” she said. “The pieces are very much like a family, just this mesh of beautiful things that is different but goes together.” Johansson grew up seeing David Yurman’s advertising campaigns and jewelry around New York City, which shaped her own jewelry style. “You would always see the beautiful black and white photos and it was this effortlessly chic woman whose jewelry was part of her everyday life. She had this glamourous appeal but was never trying.”

Scarlett Johansson

24 REIS-NICHOLS JEWELERS MAGAZINE

The Mercer collection is an evolution of that effortlessly elegant Yurman style. It began with David’s drawing of a reimagined oval link in a more sculptural, sensual shape. That link was forged in 18k yellow and rose gold and burnished silver and combined with the company’s iconic Cable motif and diamonds. The lively spirit of downtown New York is expressed in the curated mix of metal, proportion, and shiny and matte finishes. “Over the decades, our linked chains have become iconic, and so emblematic of the brand,” said Evan. “It’s really a part of our foundation as a company, but also as a family. One of the first things my dad sculpted for my mom was a direct- welded necklace.” The Mercer’s oval links also

carved in wax by one of the company’s in-house master craftsmen, handmade and hand-finished like a piece of sculpture. “You can feel in the pieces that they are handcrafted and cared about, and it feels very personal,” said Johansson. “It’s not something that’s mass manufactured.” That attention to detail and individualistic quality is embodied in the Mercer Melange bracelet, which combines 18k rose gold and burnished silver oval links with smaller Cable links, a Cognac diamond link, and toggle closure with white diamond detail. Designs also come in elegant yet bold 18k yellow gold and diamond choker length necklaces, drop earrings, and multi-row rings. It’s instantly recognizable as David Yurman and seamlessly integrates with past collections. “Each piece has real intention to it and spirit about it and is made with a lot of love,” said Johansson. “You feel that from the brand, and it’s really authentic.”

MARCO BICEGO ACADEMY TRAINING THE NEXT GENERATION OF MASTER GOLDSMITHS

M arco Bicego, the renowned Italian fine jewelry brand celebrated for its nature- inspired collections, has embarked on an extraordinary new journey: the Marco Bicego Academy, a prestigious training program designed to nurture and develop new master goldsmiths and professional jewelry artisans. This unique initiative combines formal classroom teaching, structured hands-on training, and personalized coaching to enhance the brand’s specialized production capacity and create a legacy for generations to come. In collaboration with recruitment agency Gi Group and the Vicenza Professional School of Art and Crafts, the academy has initiated a comprehensive artisan recruiting and selection process to identify talented individuals to learn the revered craft of goldsmithing. Throughout an intensive and immersive 120-hour training program, artisans learn and develop their handcrafting skills under careful guidance from the industry’s finest. By passing on this old-world technique to the next generation, Marco Bicego is enshrining its heritage and influencing jewelry-making for decades to come. “The importance of learning and mastering a craft seems to be a recommendation from the past,” says Marco Bicego, founder and creative director of the eponymous brand. “Instead, it is very current, and it can be prestigious.”

Marco Bicego, founder and creative director.

“We have launched this academy to enhance the quality of our work and make our territory attractive again,” he says. “It is part of our mission to preserve and elevate historical savoir-faire, supporting the bond with our local community and the territory where our goldsmith tradition originates.”

From backgrounds diverse in experience and expertise, every artisan to that attends the academy embarks on a transformative journey, mastering old-world techniques. One of those techniques is burin engraving, an exquisite distinctive handcrafted process synonymous with the brand’s heritage. Relying on an ancient tool, the burin engraving technique dates back to the 15th century, with Maso Finiguerra being one of the first notable Italian goldsmiths to utilize the process. With quick, meticulous motions, artisans scratch into gold, leaving behind fine lines that produce a smooth yet captivating brushed texture. More than 5,000 hand movements go into each design, and no two pieces are alike. That makes each necklace, earring, and ring one-of-a-kind. Bicego is revered for his ability to fuse ancient traditions with contemporary creativity. He has developed this signature style that resonates with women seeking refined yet unconventional luxury for their everyday lives. His designs draw inspiration from the organic shapes found in nature, the allure of 18k yellow gold, and the captivating radiance of precious gemstones. Present in more than 50 countries worldwide, Marco Bicego has become one of the world’s most prestigious jewelry brands. Now, as the company embarks on this remarkable journey to nurture a new generation of master artisans, the brand reaffirms its commitment to excellence, innovation, and the preservation of time-honored craftsmanship.

SISTER, SISTER DE BEER’S FOREVERMARK REDEFINES EXCEPTIONAL WITH THESE ONE-OF-A- KIND DIAMOND STUDS. D iamond studs are timeless pieces that can be treasured for a life- time (or more!) as they are passed down from generation to gener- ation. But what happens before they arrive in our store? The original diamond from which these incredible studs were formed was discovered in 2020. These studs are particularly special because each stone was cut from the same 14.32-carat rough diamond! The true exceptionalism of this pair would only be fully revealed in the weeks to come. MAKING THE CUT Cutting and polishing a rough diamond of this quality is an art form left only to some of the world’s most prolific master diamond cutters. The skills and techniques have been handed down throughout history, re- sulting in the trained eye of the diamantaire who foresaw this diamond’s true potential. Only a select number of diamonds are chosen each year to be a part of De Beers Forevermark’s Exceptional Diamond Collection. These di- amonds are kept separate from others from the moment of discovery— their carat weight and beauty setting them apart. To make a diamond “Exceptional,” it must be at least three carats in weight. For this particular pair of studs, at least five craftsmen worked several hours to bring these two diamonds to their current 4.01 and 4.02 polished carat weights, respectively. THE EXCEPTIONAL EVALUATION The diamonds are sent to Antwerp, Belgium—the home of the legend- ary Diamond District. The District is known as the global center for di- amond trading since the industry’s earliest days. Home to the De Beers

Institute of Diamonds, this center uses De Beers Forevermark’s pro- prietary technology to individually select diamonds against strict criteria to ensure that only the best of the best are chosen in an 18- step evaluation process. First, the diamond’s papers are checked to establish where they were found and cut and who they were found and cut by. Then, the diamond is examined to ensure all physical qualities of the diamond are natural. The diamonds were then graded on polish, symmetry, color, and clarity—and became two of the few who passed this rig- orous evaluation. After this, the sisters were then awarded Excep- tional status. DIAMONDS ARE (YOURS) FOREVER After being deemed worthy of inclusion into the Exceptional Dia- mond Collection, the next step for the diamonds was the creation of the inscription, which includes the De Beers Forevermark icon and a unique identification number inscribed on the table of each diamond. This identifier promises that the diamond is genuine, re- sponsibly sourced, and natural while also including information on the year of discovery, original rough carat weight, and the final pol- ished carat weight. Each stud is inscribed with its own number that distinguishes it from all other diamonds in existence, making each earring entirely unique. Something interesting to note is that this diamond twosome was originally meant to be nearly identical solitaire diamond engagement rings, but Reis-Nichols Senior Jewelry Consultant, Andrew Pyke, thought they would be even more spectacular as a pair of diamond stud earrings! This one-of-a-kind pair of sister martini studs weigh in at a whopping 8.04 carats in total and are H-I in color with a VS1 clarity, making them some of the most exquisite diamonds we’ve ever had in our case. Each diamond comes with a bespoke book that documents key milestones and photography of the diamond’s journey from formation to now. Discover them now at Reis-Nichols.

A flight might take you through Atlanta and then on to Panama City. From there a 30 minute drive will bring you to a paradise designed to facilitate a rewind and refresh. The original vision of Alys Beach included Moorish and Mediterranean flairs, with architectural styles founded in the beauty of Bermuda and with courtyards inspired by homes in Antigua, Guatemala. A combination and experience you will have to see to believe. To be a part of the Alys Beach community —as a resident or vacationer—is to become one with a life defined by excellence and beauty. Every piece of this vibrant, coastal, New Urbanist community has been built with intention, from the master design of the town to the detail in each doorway. The place is reminiscent of the world’s most beloved seaside towns. Alys Beach can trace its modern history to the 1970s, when the Stephens family purchased the property at auction. They had been vacationing in the area for years,

and the spur-of-the-moment purchase was intended to provide a retreat for the family and their employees. Smart man that he was, patriarch Elton Stephens named the paradise after his beloved, Alys. All of Alys Beach’s 158 acres are within a short and pleasant walk of the coast, and walkability was the intent, with easy access to the town center’s many shops and restaurants.

is defined, but if you haven’t heard of it until now, you are not alone.

Alys is beyond a respite or a retreat. The word “vacation” simply does not do it justice. With brilliant beaches, warm water, and lush vegetation, this tiny swath

of land creates an experience like no other. Dazzlingly beautiful white buildings fill the horizon, lined with pristine sands and azure waters. This is a place of dreams.

PICKLEBALL TAKING THE WORLD BY STORM

F rom YMCAs to driveways, from school playgrounds to country club courts, a new sport has emerged, and it’s captivating people of all ages and fitness levels. Pickleball, a hybrid of tennis, badminton, and ping pong, with its fast-paced action, easy accessibility, and addictive gameplay is taking the world by storm. What started as a niche backyard activity has now evolved into a juggernaut, attracting millions of enthusiasts worldwide. Pickleball’s origins can be traced back to the mid-1960s when it was invented by three dads on Bainbridge Island, Washington. Named after the family dog, Pickles, who would often chase the ball and run off with it, the sport quickly spread around their local community. Fast forward to today and pickleball has become a global phenomenon, played on dedicated courts, in community centers, and even at professional tournaments. One of the key factors contributing to pickleball’s exponential growth is its accessibility. Unlike some traditional sports, pickleball is easy to learn and can be played by people of all ages and athletic abilities. The court is smaller than a tennis court, and the lightweight paddles and plastic balls are more forgiving, making it less physically demanding on the body. This accessibility has made pickleball a popular choice for older adults looking to stay active and socialize.

Another reason for the rapid rise in popularity is its addictive and fast-paced gameplay. The combination of some of the best parts of several racket sports, pickleball is a unique and exciting experience. The game features strategic shot placement, quick reflexes, and intense rallies, keeping players engaged and constantly on their toes. It’s this combination of skill and excitement that has captured the hearts of both recreational players and competitive athletes.

The community aspect of pickleball has also played a significant role in the sport’s growth. With the rise of social media and online platforms, players from around the world can connect, share their experiences, and organize events. This shared connection has fostered a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, making pickleball an ideal sport for building friendships and networks. Professional pickleball tournaments have also emerged, attracting top athletes, further boosting the sport’s visibility. As the sport gains more recognition, it’s likely to attract even larger audiences and sponsorship opportunities, elevating it to new heights. As the sport continues to evolve, it’s clear that pickleball is here to stay. So grab a paddle, find a court, and join the pickleball revolution today!

CHOC-OLA ® : A Sweet Tale of Resilience, Revival, and Refined Indulgence

A t Reis-Nichols, jewelry isn’t the only heirloom. For the Nichols family, just the mention of Choc-Ola® opens the memory floodgates back to a time when the chocolatey beverage was the only option in the house. And it was all thanks to their maternal grandfather, Harry Normington, Sr. In 1944, Normington poured his heart into crafting a shelf- stable chocolate beverage that didn’t require refrigeration. All you had to do was shake and sip! Nurtured over the next three decades, Choc-Ola® became a household name. By the mid-20th century, the company was selling two million cases annually. Then, in 1977, Mr. Normington sold the company to 7Up/Schweppes, which eventually ceased production in 1985. Fast forward to 2009, and enter Dan Iaria, the visionary behind Rock-Cola Cafe in Indianapolis. Seeking to instill a sense of nostalgia in his 1950s-style cafe, Iaria acquired the rights to Choc-Ola® and initiated small-scale manufacturing from inside the restaurant. It soon became clear that the nostalgic demand far outweighed the cafe’s production capacity. However, after attempting to bring the drink back to shelves in 2013, Choc-Ola® was again forced out of production due to an antiquated bottling process. Today, Iaria continues production in his cafe on a made-to-order basis.

Now, the future of Choc-Ola® rests in the hands of Dave Hunter, a 38-year veteran in the food and beverage industry, and his partner Marshall Welton. Together, they aim to continue the legacy and growth of a household name. “We will market to the five footprint states: Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky, and Southern Michigan. But in the next three or four years, we hope to go nationwide,” Hunter stated. Having grown up on the southside, Hunter also happens to be a Reis-Nichols customer and a family acquaintance. He recalls playing many rounds of golf with William (Bill) Nichols, Sr. and even attended BJ’s wedding reception at the invitation of his good friend, Robin Walls. “There are many ties here with the Nichols family,” Hunter said. “That’s what happens when you’re a Southsider—the fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree.”

Using his decades of experience building food and beverage brands right here in Central Indiana, Hunter plans on doing the same with Choc-Ola®. Two flavor extensions are also in the works: Strawberry & Cream and Orangesicle. But for now, Hunter declares the chocolate just as good as he (and many) remember it—as it should be since he’s using the original recipe! For some, Choc-Ola® will bring back memories. But for many more, Choc-Ola® will be at the center of new ones. So, be on the lookout for that happy little cow on a shelf near you!
