They say a mother’s love and determination for her children never ends. But what about her love and determination for herself? There is so much to learn from women everywhere when they take the same fire and passion they have for their families and use it to reach goals and dreams of their own. This Mother’s Day, Frederic H. Rubel is celebrating everything it means to be a mother and a woman: strength, determination, fire, passion, fearlessness, and most importantly, love. We couldn’t think of anyone more special to help us celebrate than our good friend and designer Penny Preville and her own mother, Joyce Lowenstein. A MOTHER’S
“She’s truly an inspiration and the embodiment of what you can do when you put your mind, body, and soul into something. She’s not just my mom anymore; she’s a college graduate.” As a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Lowenstein spent the last 70 years pursing things that brought her happiness, like getting married, raising a family, and keeping herself busy as an antiques dealer and interior designer. In 2012, Joyce realized that completing one particular unfinished task would bring her a great deal of happiness: earning a college degree in art history. So, she put all of her strength, fire, passion, and determination into the quest. She overcame health challenges along the way, ultimately proving what a woman is capable of accomplishing when she puts her mind to it, regardless of age or obstacles. “My mother is one of the strongest, most determined people I know,” Penny says. “Not only did she raise my siblings and me, but she’s also persevered through so many of life’s challenges, never taking her eye off the prize and what she wanted.”
IT’S NEVER TOO LATE As a designer, Penny Preville has bejeweled dozens of celebrities — everyone from Jennifer Lawrence to Oprah Winfrey. As a mother, she’s even had the privilege of designing and crafting the engagement ring her son would later use to propose (which ultimately led to her bridal collection). Now, Penny can say she’s the proud daughter of a Georgia State University graduate — and not just any graduate, but one for the record books! In May 2019, Joyce Lowenstein walked across the ceremony stage to accept her bachelor’s degree from GSU — an adventure 70 years in the making. On her cap were the words, “Never Too Late.” And it sure wasn’t for the now 95-year-old. “Watching my mother pursue and achieve a goal she’s had for decades was one of the proudest moments of my life,” Penny says.

THE JOURNEY CONTINUES While she now holds the title of oldest GSU graduate, Joyce is most proud of her precious titles of mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She’s navigated all the ups and downs that come with being a wife and mother, all the while, never losing the spark that her family adores and everything that makes her a fierce, strong woman. Since graduating, Joyce has taken time to focus on her family, showering them with the kind of love only a mother can give. Each and every day, Penny says she continues to be amazed and inspired by her mother, who, of course, shows no signs of slowing down and even wants to get into the fine arts appraising business.
Like so many mothers and mother figures, Joyce Lowenstein is a reflection of endless love, passion, determination, strength, and fearlessness. She is the true embodiment of what it means to never give up on your dreams, and proof that a mother’s journey never ends.

As a child, David Yurman stole moments for himself, often playing hooky to wander to his favorite spot in the woods: An area with large trees and cable vines strong enough to swing from. Little did he know at the time, but David Yurman was creating memories he would later recall, in order to sculpt some of the most iconic jewelry designs in the world. In its primary form, cable is found throughout all of nature’s designs. And this spring, David Yurman is celebrating cable’s connection with art, technology, and nature as he reinvisions the foundation of his legendary jewelry collection.

CABLE EDGE After almost forty years, Cable remains at the heart of David Yurman’s designs, changing, adapting, and evolving, all while remaining a constant staple for the designer. This year, Cable, his artistic signature, is getting a new formation.

Cable Edge is based not on multiple wires, but on one forged, rectangular shape that is torqued, which echoes early metal pieces that David’s son, Evan, created. Rolex’s enduring relationship with the world of golf began more than 50 years ago when Arnold Palmer became the brand’s first golf Testimonee.
