NO METEORITE DIAL THE SAME
The OMEGA Constellation collection has long been inspired by the precise movement of the stars. That stellar theme continues with a new range of models featuring distinctive dials created from meteorite. Thanks to the natural pattern found within this rare space material, every slice is unique, guaranteeing that no two dials will ever appear the same. This 28 mm stainless steel and 18K Sedna™ Gold version has been given a blue colour treatment, further enhancing the design with maximum impact.

Benton Clyde Clark III Receives Oklahoma’s Highest Honor
By Gini Moore Campbell, Vice President, Oklahoma Hall of Fame
O
On the evening of November 14th, surrounded by family and friends, Benton Clyde Clark III received Oklahoma’s highest honor when he was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame. He was presented for induction by his brother, Jim Clark, chairman of B. C. Clark Jewelers. With the first induction in 1928, to date, 745 of Oklahoma’s native sons and daughters have received the prestigious honor. Inducted with Benton Clyde Clark III as members of the Oklahoma Hall of Fame Class of 2024 were Anita Arnold, Tecumseh; Greg Burns, Oklahoma City; Tim DuBois, Grove; Drew Edmondson, Muskogee; Anne Morris Greenwood, Carnegie; and Amber Valletta, Tulsa.
The elements that make up the Oklaho- ma Hall of Fame medallion reflect and celebrate Oklahoma’s rich heritage. The white star of the medallion, taken from the Oklahoma State Seal, represents Oklaho- ma as the 46th state of the Union and the 46th star on the flag of the United States. The gold center, Uncle Sam blessing the union of Oklahoma and Indian territories, is taken directly from the original impres- sion stamp of the Oklahoma Memorial As- sociation, known today as the Oklahoma Hall of Fame. The mistletoe wreath is from the Oklahoma State Seal, first used as an element of the Great Seal of the Territory of Oklahoma. The five “T” shapes honor the five Indian nations that inhabited In- dian Territory prior to Statehood and are surrounded by rays of the sun—the Indi- an symbol for constancy. The medallion hangs from a ribbon representing the color of Oklahoma’s rich red earth.

Born in Oklahoma City, Benton Clyde Clark III attended Cleveland Grade School, Taft Junior High, and Classen High School. Scientifically curious, from an early age Clark knew he would not be entering the family jewelry business. “The only experience I have with jewelry was a pocket watch my grandfather gave me. I took the watch apart to see how it worked,” he once told a reporter. Clark enrolled at the University of Oklahoma (OU), where a perfect score on the mathematics entrance exam earned him advanced placement in the Department of Physics. After graduating from OU, he earned his masters

in Nuclear Physics from the University of California and his doctorate in Biophysics from Columbia University. While serving in the United States Air Force, where he achieved the rank of Captain, Clark developed an instrument to measure radiation in space. The instrument flew on both the Gemini 4 and Gemini 6 missions. Following his time at Tulsa’s AVCO, Clark joined Martin Marietta. For the Mars landing mission Viking , he was responsible for conceiving and developing the x-ray fluorescence spectrometer (XRFS) used in analyzing the Martian soil. In receiving the data and studying the chemical soil makeup, Clark became the first person in history to know what the soil on Mars was made of. With the Mars Exploration Rovers, Spirit and Opportunity , the wide-ranging exploration was made possible, in addition to clues relating to water activity on Mars. And, his expertise on the Phoenix probe to Mars brought new discoveries on the red planet’s polar regions. He conceived the OSIRIS-REx mission that recently returned samples of an organic-rich asteroid.

The holder of multiple patents, Clark has explored additional planetary bodies as well. He built part of a key instrument on the European Giotto spacecraft which flew to Halley’s Comet. With a British team he analyzed data from the Huygens probe as it landed on Saturn’s largest moon, Titan. He led the Stardust proposal, making possible the collection of cometary particles as old as the solar system. His team designed the Genesis mission that provided for the col- lection of solar wind particle samples—the first to return samples from outside the or- bit of the moon. Clark’s extensive resume includes chair- ing the External Advisory Committee for the NASA Center for Research and Train- ing in Exobiology at the University of Cal- ifornia and the Salk Institute; co-chair of the International Academy of Astronau- tics on International Mars Exploration; service on the Space Station Science and Applications Advisory Subcommittee, the American Institute of Aeronautics and As- tronautics Space Sciences/Astronomy and Life Sciences committees and the Man-In- Space panel of the Military Space Systems Technology Model, and the Exobiology
Discipline Working Group; and has served on multiple NASA comet science working groups. He has authored more than 150 publications, reports, abstracts, and pre- sentations covering planetary missions, space science, and countless other fields of research and development. The list of missions and discoveries made by Clark are endless. The NASA Pub- lic Service Medal, Air Force Service Medal, Wright Brothers Award, induction into the Oklahoma Aviation and Space Hall of Fame, Martin Marietta’s Inventor of the Year, and Author of the Year for Martin Marietta As- tronautics are a very small sampling of the recognitions he has received. The Interna- tional Astronomical Union even named an asteroid in his honor—the 14702 Benclark. The octogenarian scientist is not finished yet. In addition to continued research, exploration, and concept development, Clark remains one of the most sought-af- ter speakers and experts in the vast field of space and planetary exploration. As part of testing of his asteroid sampling system, Benton Clyde Clark III floated in space on a zero-gee airplane flight.

Athleisure
Attitude
W
While brands like Ralph Lauren have been doing sophisticated sportswear for decades, in recent years, athleisure wear has taken over as America’s go-to casual look, surpassing denim in popularity for both men and women. This trend reflects significant shifts in lifestyle, fashion preferences, and cultural values — and there are several factors behind the transition.
One of the primary reasons for the rise of athleisure fashion is its unparalleled comfort and functionality. Materials like spandex, nylon, and moisture-wicking fabrics provide a level of comfort that denim simply cannot match. Greater flexibility and breathability make it ideal for countless activities, like running from barre to brunch and beyond. As the general population prioritizes comfort in their daily life, athleisure wear has become more acceptable as daily wear and the preferred choice among the masses for casual attire.

UNPARALLELED COMFORT + FUNCTIONALITY
The growing emphasis on health and wellness has also fueled the popularity of athleisure. As more people engage in fitness activities and adopt active lifestyles, the demand for clothing that seamlessly transitions from the athletic club to everyday life has increased. With its blend of sporty and casual elements, athleisure is the perfect solution. Brands like Lululemon, Alo, and Vuori have capitalized by offering stylish, high-performance pieces that cater to both fitness enthusiasts and fashion- conscious consumers.
Athleisure’s versatility is also a big reason for its popularity. Leggings, joggers, and athletic tops can be easily dressed up or down, making them suitable for a wide range of occasions. A pair of form-fitting black leggings, for example, can be paired with a blazer and jewelry for a chic, office-appropriate look, or with a casual hoodie for a relaxed model-off-duty take.

LUXE + LE I SURE
And speaking of models, celebrity culture has also played a significant role in the rise of athleisure. High-profile figures such as Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber, and Gigi Hadid have been spotted frequently in athleisure ensembles, often accessorized with high-end jewelry and designer handbags. Their influence has helped normalize and popularize the trend, making it aspirational for the general public. Social media platforms including Instagram and TikTok have amplified this trend, bringing seemingly endless athleisure-inspired outfits and styling tips to the masses.
Jewelry plays a crucial role in elevating athleisure from merely casual to undeniably chic. Simple yet sophisticated pieces, like minimalist gold necklaces, hoop earrings, and stackable rings, complement the clean lines and neutral tones often found in athleisure outfits. Statement jewelry can also add a touch of glamour to an otherwise understated look. Brands have recognized this synergy, designing jewelry collections that play well with the pared-back athleisure aesthetic.

FACTS diamond
#3 ARE ALL LABORATORY-GROWN DIAMONDS SUSTAINABLE?
To address the myths and misconceptions about the diamond industry, the Natural Diamond Council conducted research to better understand the questions consumers have about the industry and to provide them with straight answers. You can also read the full report here. A natural diamond is a finite mineral created by nature consisting of a crystalline form of pure carbon, the hardest naturally occurring substance and formed deep within the Earth between 1-3 billion years ago. The word “diamond” alone always means a natural diamond. A laboratory grown diamond, also called a synthetic diamond or lab created diamond, is a man-made product that mimics the physical characteristics and optical properties of a natural diamond but can be made in unlimited quantities. #1 CAN YOU DETECT A LABORATORY- GROWN DIAMOND FROM A NATURAL DIAMOND? Yes! Because they are mass-produced in weeks, laboratory-grown diamonds have specific growth-related patterns which can be easily detected using professional verification instruments. #2 HOW ARE NATURAL DIAMONDS ETHICALLY SOURCED? Under the Kimberley Process mandated by the United Nations and the World Trade Organization, all rough diamond trade is strictly regulated to ensure it is conflict-free. Other initiatives, such as the Responsible Jewellery Council, help warrant through 3rd party audited certifications that natural diamonds are sourced responsibly.
The energy-intensive process to make laboratory-grown diamonds requires the generation of temperatures close to 20% of the temperature of the Sun’s surface. With most manufacturing happening in China and India, whose majority of grid electricity is generated from coal, it’s not possible to make a simplistic green claim. #4 WHAT HAVE BEEN THE PRICE TRENDS FOR LABORATORY-GROWN DIAMONDS? In 2016, a 1.5 carat laboratory-grown diamond cost $10,600 and in early 2023, it decreased to $2,445. Whilst they also fluctuated, over the last 25 years, natural diamonds have appreciated in price by approximately 3% on average each year. From 2016 to 2022, in some cases, the price of a 1.5 carat laboratory-grown diamond has decreased by over 75%!
32 BC CLARK MAGAZINE
#5 ARE NATURAL DIAMONDS RARE? Yes! Global natural diamond recovery peaked in 2005 and has decreased by over 30% in the last 16 years. The annual recovery of all natural diamonds 1-carat and above can fill just 1 exercise ball. Diamond formation took place millions, sometimes billions, of years ago in limited zones on Earth. #6 WHAT IS THE NATURAL DIAMOND INDUSTRY DOING TO REDUCE ITS CARBON FOOTPRINT AND PROTECT BIODIVERSITY? The natural diamond industry has set out on its journey to decarbonize in line with global climate targets. Companies like the De Beers Group are committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2030 and Rio Tinto of achieving net zero emissions by 2050. Plus, the diamond industry actively protects the biodiversity covering an area 4 times larger in size than the land they use
#7 DO NATURAL DIAMONDS BENEFIT THEIR COUNTRIES OF ORIGIN?
Yes! The natural diamond industry supports the livelihoods of 10 million worldwide. Up to 80% of rough diamond value can remain with local communities thanks to local purchasing, employment benefits, social programs, investment in infrastructure as well as the taxes, royalties and dividends paid from the industry to respective governments.
#8 HOW DO I KNOW WHETHER I’M PURCHASING A NATURAL OR A LABORATORY-GROWN DIAMOND? Any organization selling laboratory-grown diamonds, such as retailers or jewelers, are legally required to disclose it is man-made and must use approved terminology when communicating with clients. #9 IS THE INDUSTRY STOCKPILING DIAMONDS TO DRIVE-UP PRICES? No. Bain & Company reported that inventories across the world declined by 40% in 2021 based on data from company reports and the Kimberley Certification process that governs the rough diamond trade.
#10 WHAT ARE THE WORKING CONDITIONS LIKE IN THE DIAMOND INDUSTRY? NDC members ensure that working conditions are followed to the highest global standards within their mining operations. Plus, 99.7% of employees of NDC members are hired locally and one-third of the natural diamond mining industry are women.
#11 ARE NATURAL DIAMONDS TRACEABLE? The natural diamond industry is accelerating its traceability initiatives and leveraging technology like blockchain to bring transparency to its supply chains.

CROSSOVER TRIO COLLECTION David Yurman
B
Born from a collaboration between David Yurman and his wife, Sybil, the namesake brand’s Crossover collection is a striking example of creative synergy, effectively blending their distinct perspectives into a cohesive design narrative. “Design is our love language,” said Sybil, “and Crossover is the ultimate love letter. It’s a playful expression of our connection.” At the heart of the Crossover collection is the interplay of intertwined strands of smooth and signature cabled cords. Further, its innovative use of mixed metals — combining gold and silver — has become a signature element of David Yurman’s work, first introduced in this collection and carried forward in each new iteration.
The latest interpretation of the Crossover collection, Trio, adds a whole new dimension to the design with the integration of perfect triangles. The Yurmans’ son, Evan, introduced these pyramidal elements, drawing inspiration from architecture while simultaneously adding a generational touch. These perfect triangles not only seamlessly integrate into the weaving of smooth and cabled strands, but also represent the continuation of the family’s creative legacy and unity that binds them.
DESIGN IS OUR LOVE LANGUAGE, AND CROSSOVER IS THE ULTIMATE LOVE LETTER. IT’S A PLAYFUL EXPRESSION OF OUR CONNECTION.
38 BC CLARK MAGAZINE
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the Crossover collection Trio drives an even deeper narrative of collaboration and connection. A project where the family members designed alongside one another, the result is a collection that not only showcases the passion and craftsmanship that David Yurman has become known for, but also serves as a symbol of the family’s enduring ties.
From bangles to huggies and hoops, rings, necklaces, and beyond, the collection includes an array of jewels, often featuring the added brilliance of hand-set pavé diamonds.

Diamonds Brilliance DISCOVER HOW THE NATURAL DIAMOND INDUSTRY HELPED TRANSFORM THE NOW THRIVING SOUTHERN AFRICAN COUNTRY. By Shelley Brown of Botswana
Starry night sky over the Okavango Delta in Botswana.
T
Transformation is a word often associated with the formation of natural diamonds. Over the course of billions of years, carbon atoms slowly formed into brilliant gems deep within the earth. For Botswana, diamonds and transformation have another poignant connection: the ability of the natural diamond trade to transform the fortunes of a country. The History of Diamonds in Botswana Botswana, a landlocked country in Southern Africa, is both the birthplace of modern humans over 200,000 years ago and brilliant diamonds, formed billions of years before that. The discovery of the first significant deposit of diamonds in Botswana happened in 1967, just one year after the country gained independence from Britain. At the time, it was the third poorest country in the world, with minimal infrastructure. The country’s founding president, Sir Seretse Khama, made it his mission to build a government with an ambitious economic development program centered around the country’s resources.
Natural diamonds quickly became the cornerstone of Botswana’s economic development. All diamond mining in Botswana operates under a licensing agreement with the government in which 80 percent of diamond-related revenues are put back into the country’s economy. Today, Botswana is now the world’s number one diamond-producing country by value. The diamond industry accounts for 30 percent of the country’s GDP and 80 percent of its exports. The majority of the country’s diamond mines are managed by Debswana Diamond Company, a joint venture between the Botswana government and the global mining giant De Beers. Botswana mines have consistently recovered high-quality gems coveted worldwide. In 2013, the formation of Okavango Diamond Company (ODC) marked another pivotal moment in history. ODC is wholly owned by the Botswana government. As Botswana’s first state-owned diamond trading company, it has empowered the nation to responsibly manage its most prized natural resource, diversifying the market and bolstering its now thriving economy.

Sustainability Initiatives such as community development projects and environmental conservation efforts underscore Botswana’s commitment to responsible diamond mining. Upon the closure of mining operations, extensive efforts are undertaken to restore the land to its natural state, ensuring minimal long-term environmental impact. Additionally, Botswana has implemented stringent regulations to safeguard water resources and wildlife habitats in and around mining areas. To ensure the integrity and ethical provenance of its diamonds, ODC subjects its diamonds to rigorous certification processes from reputable third-party organizations, such as the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and Rapaport. ODC recently introduced the Green Star Source Programme, enabling the traceability of polished diamonds back to Botswana. Innovation is integral to ODC’s sustainability journey, and the organization continually invests in research and development to enhance its practices. ODC is constructing a state-of-the-art facility with a rooftop and carport potovoltaic (PV) system at its new headquarters. This solar power generation infrastructure will significantly reduce the environmental impact. Botswana’s journey from a landlocked nation with a tumultuous history to a beacon of economic success is intertwined with its diamond legacy. Through prudent management and a deep appreciation for its natural resources, Botswana has leveraged its diamond wealth to lift its people out of poverty and secure a brilliant future. A natural diamond from Botswana is a symbol of transformation, progress, and human potential — sourced from where it all began.

Economic Impact Diamonds account for a staggering 80 percent of Botswana’s export revenue, fueling the nation’s growth and prosperity and lifting its populace out of poverty. This revenue stream has enabled Botswana to invest in critical infrastructure, as well as education and healthcare. Much of Botswana’s 2.3-million-person population benefits from free education for children and universal healthcare. The diamond industry also provides employment to thousands, giving Botswana the highest per capita GDP of any continental African nation. The Heritage of the Botswana Diamonds A diamond from Botswana offers an origin story consumers can believe in. By centralizing operations, the government ensures both transparency and maximum returns from its diamond trade, which are then reinvested in infrastructure and government programs.
While a full range of diamonds come from Botswana, one treasure in particular captured international attention. The famed Okavango Blue, mined as a 41.11-carat rough that yielded a 20.46 carat fancy deep blue diamond, was discovered at the Orapa Mine in 2018. Owned by ODC, it is the largest and rarest blue diamond ever found in the country.

AMAZING HISTORY
By Amy Dee Stephens
B.C. CLARK SR. WAS “RAISED POOR” ON A MISSISSIPPI COTTON FARM — BUT ADVENTURE CALLED HIM TO INDIAN TERRITORY, WHERE HE VALIANTLY HUSTLED HIS WAY FROM STRUGGLING PIONEER TO SUCCESSFUL JEWELER, EARNING HIMSELF THE PROMINENT ROLE AS
The Railroad Pocket Watch Inspector
A Rare Discovery In November 2023, local pocket watch enthusiast, Jim Hasburgh, visit- ed an antique store in Dallas. While digging through a box of junk parts, he discovered a railroad-grade Hamilton 992 from 1923 with the name of B.C. Clark printed on the watch face, likely a small run sold to his railway customers. Hasburgh recognized the jeweler’s name and knew it was a rare find, with only two others known to exist. Although the century-old watch was a boon to his personal collection, he decided that this crowned jewel really belonged to the Clark family. When Hasburgh visited the jewelry store to show the pocket watch to Jim, Coleman, and Mitchell Clark, they beamed with delight. With the Clarks’ blessing, Hasburgh restored the damaged watch, but he also hunted down an additional one, bringing the known total to four. With great joy, he surprised the Clarks with not one, but two B.C. Clark pocket watches! These pocket watches played an essential role in the early establishment and growth of the BC Clark company and legacy.

Introducing: B.C. Clark
Benton Clyde Clark (1869-1963) was born at a tran- sitional point in American history. Both the Gold Rush and the Civil War had recently ended. While the East- ern part of the country was rebuilding from the war, the newly-settled West was building for the first time. Through it all, the mighty steam engine was criss-cross- ing the landscape and driving change. The train changed B.C. Clark’s life, too.
Train Wreck! While B.C. was gaining his education in a one-room schoolhouse, a terrible problem was occurring across the coun- try: too many train wrecks. At least 180 wrecks had resulted in numerous fatali- ties. The entire system relied on employ- ees’ watches being accurate. As B.C. was learning the watch repair trade at his brother’s business in Abilene, TX, a landmark train wreck occurred. The Great Kipton Ohio Train Wreck of 1891 ended with eight deaths because an engineer’s watch was off by four minutes. The railroads could no longer delay im- plementing safety precautions. It was the only way to ease the growing fears of em- ployees and passengers.
B.C. the Pioneer Meanwhile, B.C. was intrigued by the adventure and affordable land offered in Indian Territory, north of the Red River. In 1892, at the age of 23, he boarded a train from his brother’s home in Abilene and headed north to Chickasha, I.T.. He traveled with his watch repair bench and tools, some jewelry, and his life savings. At Purcell, where he was to switch trains, he realized his wallet was gone, and in one tick of the second hand, his life changed course. B.C. was suddenly broke, but not broken. He headed up the hill from the depot to seek a solution. Amazingly, he ran into an acquaintance who owned the general store and offered B.C. a corner to set up a display for his jewelry and watch repairs. Pur- cell, a town of 2,000 people, already had two jewelry stores, but it also had a railroad roundtable servicing travelers from Chicago and Galveston. B.C. was determined to out-sell the other stores.

Pocket Watch Importance The pocket watch was a necessary commodity among railroad employees, whose careers hinged upon timing accuracy. Even before the Association of American Railroads voted upon time-keeping standards to prevent further train wrecks, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad that ran through Purcell required that pocket watches regularly be checked for accuracy. Prior to the railroad, only the wealthy could afford a pocket watch. Inside of the watch was an unseen marvel of mechanics; a precision of moving gears and wheels, some made of gold. The hard-jeweled bearings, such as rubies, reduced friction without wearing down. American-made timepieces, specifically those certified for the railroad, only gained or lost 30 seconds a week—rivaling even today’s standards. The railroad company needed these accurate pocket watches in their employees’ hands, but few could afford them at the exorbitant price of $37. Watches given to employees often ended up in pawn shops or as gambling debts. It was B.C. Clark who provided a solution.
Marketing Genuis B.C. was an entrepreneur and pioneer, who believed in the power of friendship and the necessity of advertising. His first major investment in Purcell was extravagant at the time; a three-foot sign that read, “The Big Watch Jeweler.” B.C. also ran personalized newspaper ads, thanking his customers, and he formed friendships with people from all walks of life, including the local Native Americans. When the Santa Fe railroad needed to select an official Pocket Watch Inspector for Purcell, it was B.C. who had the skills, connections, and trust to earn the prestigious position. Under the new safety rules, railroad employees carried large, plain, railroad-certified watches that had to be inspected every 15 days and fully serviced every 15 months. Suddenly, B.C. had a ready-made clientele, but in exchange, he gained the weighty responsibility of keeping railroad cargo and passengers safe. Watch prices continued to be an issue, however, so B.C. boldly approached the Santa Fe Railroad with the idea of giving the railroad employees the option to deduct $5 per paycheck until the expensive watch was paid off. The idea worked, and B.C.’s creativity resulted in a steady flow of customers who kept him solvent, even through the Great Depression.

The Defining Watch As the friendship between Hasburgh and the Clarks grew in 2024, so did an interest in the collection of pocket watches tucked away and largely forgotten in the basement of the jewelry store. A treasure hunt revealed timepieces dating as far back as 1885, including one with “Purcell I.T.” (Indian Territory) printed on the dial. Incredibly, these quality watches, built before the invention of electricity, still worked. Additionally, a memory surfaced about a missing watch, once loaned to a museum. Eventually, it was discovered in the store’s closet, and Hasburgh’s mouth dropped open when he saw it. It was the pocket watch of a lifetime: a Hamilton 978 from 1913, with a hand- painted Santa Fe Railroad emblem and the words “B.C. Clark, Purcell, Okla., Watch Inspector.” No doubt, this precious heirloom was B.C.’s personal watch!
Hasburgh consulted his network of experts, who proclaimed the watch as one-of-a-kind and extremely special, likely gifted to B.C. by the railroad or the Hamilton company. Few personalized, railroad-grade watches by Hamilton are known to exist.
B.C.’s Railroad Legacy B.C. Clark continued his important role as a Pocket Watch Inspector for an incredible 60 years, even after he moved from Purcell to Oklahoma City. The store’s legacy is built on B.C.’s pioneering spirit and ingenuity, but few are aware of the profound effect the railroad played in his survival and prestige as a jeweler. The train industry ensured his store’s legacy for future generations, but the rediscovery of the pocket watch that B.C. held in his very own hands further reveals his importance in railroad history—an emblem that proclaims his vital, life-saving contribution to America in his role as… The Railroad Pocket Watch Inspector.
