custom collection

San Ramon’s family-owned Heller Jewelers has unveiled an exclusive collection of necklaces in collaboration with Kristi Yamaguchi’s Always Dream, marking a significant partnership aimed at supporting early childhood education. This collection is not just about jewelry (as beautiful as the designs may be); it’s a beacon of hope, with all proceeds going toward furthering the mission of Always Dream. With Always Dream’s North Star emblem as its anchor (a symbol that’s associated with guidance and protection), the collection comprises three intricately designed necklaces.

The first piece in the collection, the Always Dream necklace, features a stunning diamond pendant that elegantly showcases the jeweler’s logo. A timeless piece, the necklace is perfect for those who appreciate the brilliance of diamonds combined with a meaningful design. Next is the Always Dream charm necklace, adorned with a textured gold charm. This piece exudes a more subtle elegance, with the charm adding a touch of sophistication that can be worn for casual and more formal occasions alike.

BY HELLER JEWELERS

16 | HELLER JEWELERS MAGAZINE

Lastly, the Always Dream medallion necklace is the boldest of the three, blending gold and diamonds for more of a statement piece. It perfectly balances the luxurious feel of gold with the sparkle of diamonds, creating a striking yet refined look. A collaborative effort between Kristi Yamaguchi and the Heller Jewelers team, led by Scott Heller, they embarked on a journey to bring the Always Dream logo to life in a way that is both versatile and inclusive, yet nevertheless, inspiring. The design process involved meticulous attention to detail, from the initial concept sketches to the final production stages. The team developed computer-aided design (CAD) models to ensure precision, where expert artisans carefully set the stones and engraved each piece, upholding the highest standards of quality.

Yamaguchi and Heller emphasize that while this collection is beautiful in its design, more than anything it is a testament to their shared commitment to empowering children and promoting literacy in the community. Through this partnership, they hope to provide adults with the tools needed to instill a love of reading in children across the San Francisco Bay Area and Hawaii (and beyond), making a lasting positive impact on the next generation.

“I’M THRILLED TO PARTNER WITH HELLER JEWELERS ON THE ALWAYS DREAM COLLECTION. THIS MEANINGFUL COLLABORATION NOT ONLY CELEBRATES BEAUTY AND CRAFTSMANSHIP, BUT ALSO SUPPORTS THE POWER OF LITERACY, HELPING CHILDREN IN UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES BUILD THE FOUNDATION THEY NEED TO PURSUE THEIR DREAMS.” –KRISTI YAMAGUCHI 1992 U.S. Olympic Gold Medalist

STACKS OF STYLE

By Annie Watson

Tiers of Joy INTERCHANGING FINE JEWELRY BANDS CAN ADD AN ELEMENT OF FRESHNESS AND EXCITEMENT TO YOUR PERSONAL COLLECTION.

L

Life is layered. From personal milestones to anniversaries and beyond, there are many moments to be marked and celebrated — and fine jewelry, with its timeless allure that transcends cultures and generations, is the perfect way to do just that. Minimal-but- mighty bands serve as lasting mementos of love, commitment, and success that can be passed down for generations to come. One of the beauties of owning such bands is their versatility. Unlike some jewelry pieces that are more distinct in style or cater to a specific occasion, bands can be elegantly simple or intricately designed, making them suitable for a variety of settings. This adaptability allows the wearer to express their unique style and

preferences, celebrating their journey with pieces that truly resonate with them. Owning multiple fine jewelry bands is not just a luxury; it’s a form of personal expression. Each band can tell a different story or represent a different chapter in one’s life. Take a classic diamond-studded band; it may symbolize an engagement, while a more modern, minimalist design might mark a career milestone or personal accomplishment. The ability to interchange the bands allows for a dynamic way to honor and remember life’s most important moments. It also means it’s easy to match jewelry to an outfit, mood, or the specific nature of any event.

Interchanging fine jewelry bands can add an element of freshness and excitement to a personal collection, and prevent the monotony of wearing the same piece every day. A range of different combinations allows for the joy of rediscovering a beloved band from occasions past. That not only enhances the value of each piece but also keeps accessories feeling fresh. Fine jewelry bands are more than just decorative; they are tokens of life’s most cherished moments — big or small. Combining multiple interchangable rings is a great way to celebrate originality and style, as well as life’s special memories.

Long-time clients of Heller Jewelers know that they are in good hands and that any redesign of their precious jewels will reflect their own personal sense of taste and style. An engagement ring upgrade can mean anything from swapping out a center stone to enhancing the original setting with a halo of diamonds or a detailed prong and

gallery setting. Many couples add diamond anniversary bands or wraps that also have the power to alter the look and elevate the impact of a diamond in an existing ring. For some couples, the best option is to upgrade to a new diamond ring due to a change in style preference or damage to the original ring. Consider enhancing the design

with layers of meaning by adding children’s birthstones, specialized filigree metalwork, inscriptions to the band or three-stone “past, present, and future” symbolism. Remounting to create a necklace or new piece of jewelry is also a beautiful way to pass your original diamond on to your next generation.

ONE-OF-A-KIND

Custom Design CRAFTING THE PERFECT SYMBOL OF LOVE THAT IS UNIQUELY YOURS, ALONE

D

A good understanding of their style will help to create a ring they will love.

Designing a custom engagement ring is a deeply personal and exciting journey, allowing you to create a unique symbol of love that reflects your soon-to-be bride’s style. At Heller Jewelers we have experts to help guide you through the easy steps of custom designing your own unique ring and creating a treasure to mark the start your new life together.

To get started, it’s always a good idea to gather intel on your partner’s preferred style. Look at their existing jewelry for clues: Do they wear mostly silver or gold jewelry? Do they lean towards classic, vintage, or modern designs? Have they ever dropped any hints or shown you a picture of their dream ring? (A picture is worth a thousand words!) Consider whether they favor intricate details or minimalist elegance.

32 | HELLER JEWELERS MAGAZINE

Custom designing an engagement ring, or any piece of jewelry, offers flexibility in terms of design and cost. Set a budget that is comfortable for you, keeping in mind that the final price will be influenced by factors such as the choice of metal, the size and quality of the gemstone, and the complexity of the design. Discussing your budget will help to create a design that meets your expectations. Don’t forget to consider options like engraving, which can add a very personal touch to the ring.

Traditionally, popping the question and presenting an engagement ring is designed to be a surprise. However, today it is common to find couples shopping together to select their all-important rings. Designing a custom engagement ring, either as a surprise or as a venture done together, can be a fulfilling experience that results in a truly one-of-a- kind piece.

We will work closely with you to create a beautiful and meaningful ring that will be cherished for a lifetime.

L ICE & DIAMONDS A SONG OF AN ARCTIC ADVENTURE THROUGH CANADA'S NORTHWEST TERRITORIES WITH LILY JAMES, GLOBAL AMBASSADOR FOR NATURAL DIAMOND COUNCIL. By Grant Mobley Lily James stood on a frozen lake under the Northern Lights in -40 degrees. Her journey to Canada’s North, into winter’s grasp, was a quest to witness the profound impact of natural diamond recovery on this land and its people. As the Natural Diamond Council global ambassador, the Emmy- nominated actress traveled to Botswana in 2022. Witnessing the transformative effect of natural diamonds on communities and environments opened her eyes to the industry’s reality. This is how James found herself in the icy expanses of Canada’s Northwest Territories — the globe’s third-largest natural diamond source. James touched down in Yellowknife, the capital of the Northwest Territories and home to half of the territory’s forty-thousand inhabitants. Excited to meet locals, James headed to B. Dene, an indigenous-owned camp nearby. Yellowknife’s lake, as big as Belgium, transforms into an expanse of ice in winter, allowing James to drive across it to get there.

cutting facility, while Drygeese helps operate the B. Dene camp. They ushered James into a sled, traveling through thick snow to B. Dene. The camp is an educational hub, immersing visitors in the Yellowknives Dene First Nation’s heritage. Upon arrival, James, welcomed by a community gathered around a fire, witnessed the “feeding the fire” ceremony led by elder Jonas Sangris. This ritual honors nature’s elements and ancestors. The ceremony, highlighted by handcrafted drums and singing, deeply moved James, underlining the bond between tradition, community, and the natural environment. As the cabin filled with the scent of fish stew, James and Sangris discussed the impact of natural diamonds on the region. Sangris shared his story as the chief of the Dene First Nation before the diamond discovery. He talked about the early 1990s when economic instability loomed. The elders’ assurance, “Don’t worry, something will come up,” preceded the discovery of diamonds by merely a year. Since 1999, the economic landscape of the Northwest Territories has surged by 80%, credited to natural diamonds. Sangris was critical in negotiating

terms with mining companies to ensure the community’s maximum benefit, prioritizing local employment, local procurement, royalties for residents, special taxes, and environmental safeguards. Today, diamond mining is the predominant contributor to the region’s GDP. James returned along the ice road, eager to catch the Northern Lights. Then it happened: the famed Aurora Borealis began to streak across the sky. James watched in awe, listening as Lynn recounted ancient tales of the Northern Lights and their significance to her people. The moment connected the journey’s intent: the Northern Lights and natural diamonds both inspire awe, signify beauty, and remind us of the earth’s capacity to create phenomena. The three main diamond mines, including Gahcho Kué, are a few hundred kilometers north of Yellowknife. James took a brief flight to an ice runway to reach this remote marvel. The mine facilities offer a self-contained community for employees working two-week shifts. Environmental monitors Mason Elwood and Jarrett Vornbrock invited James to see their efforts to safeguard this extraordinary environment.

The journey included the Tibbitt to Contwoyto Winter Road — the ice road popularized by Ice Road Truckers . Funded by diamond companies, it’s the world’s longest ice road, supporting the mines’ yearly operations and providing invaluable access to local and indigenous communities. Mason and Jarrett’s dedication to environmental stewardship under harsh conditions seems heroic. They regularly monitor local wildlife and water quality and ensure minimal environmental impact from mining operations. Mason shared that natural diamonds provide incredible opportunities for locals, offering a way for the natural resources of the landscape to give back to the people. James’s journey through the Northwest Territories showcased breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and the significant economic impact of natural diamonds. This journey underscored the undeniable truth that natural diamonds, much like the Northern Lights, are awe-inspiring phenomena integral to the fabric of life in the Northwest Territories.

The new versions of the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date express the brand’s enduring desire for rare and wide-ranging expertise to be found in even the smallest details. Colors, materials, motifs, hour markers – each element contributes to the harmony of the new combinations. Two new versions of the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 40 are unveiled. The first, in 18 k Everose gold, introduces a slate ombré dial. This design offers a delicate transition between light at the centre of the dial and darkness around the edge. The second version, in 18 k white gold, features a pearlized white mother-of-pearl dial. Its irregular, voluminous texture evokes tiny overlapping clouds that play with the light. The Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 36 is also released in two new versions. The first, in 18 k yellow gold, has a white lacquer dial with faceted, deconstructed Roman numerals and faceted index hour markers. The second version is presented in 18 k Everose gold with a blue-green dial. This deep, intense color is illuminated by a bezel set with 60 trapeze-cut diamonds.

America the Beautiful

Arches National Park Arches National Park, a stone’s throw from the vibrant town of Moab, is a must-see. With over 2,000 natural stone arches, it’s a traveler’s dream. The stunning formations are easily visible from the scenic drive or a short walk, making it accessible to all. The Devil’s Garden trail offers a unique hiking experience to see several arches up close, while the famous Delicate Arch, perched atop a hill, is a can’t-miss experience that rewards early risers. And for the adventurous, the Fiery Furnace hike is an unforgettable experience that you can enjoy with a permit.

Utah’s Mighty 5 national parks are a sensory feast for the discerning traveler. The red-dusted landscapes, a marriage of tranquility and breathtaking sights, inspire wandering minds of all ages. Picture yourself journeying through the majestic rock formations of Arches, the stunning amphitheaters of Bryce Canyon, the vast, rugged beauty of Canyonlands, the striking cliffs of Capitol Reef, and the awe-inspiring grandeur of Zion. Each park, a unique masterpiece, embodies the true essence of the American Wild West, offering a serene retreat from the everyday hustle and bustle.

42 | HELLER JEWELERS MAGAZINE

Canyonlands National Park Canyonlands National Park is also a must-visit, especially since it’s easy to pair with Arches. The largest park by acreage, it is divided into four distinct districts: Island in the Sky, Needles, The Maze, and The Rivers. The Island in the Sky district offers the Grand View Point trail, an easy walk with breathtaking canyon views. For a truly magical experience, hike the Mesa Arch trail at sunrise. In the Needles district, the Druid Arch trail is a favorite, offering stunning scenery that’s worth every step. Up for a challenge? Test your skills in The Maze, the most remote district of them all. Or perhaps you’d rather enjoy the power and majestic beauty of The Rivers, where the Colorado and Green Rivers wind through sandstone to create deep canyons before converging at the Confluence. Capitol Reef National Park Capitol Reef, located near Torrey, is a hidden gem and the second-largest park by acreage. It gets its name from the striking white sandstone dome resembling the US Capitol building, visible as you head east from the visitor’s center. The “Reef” part of its name refers to the rugged Waterpocket Fold, a natural barrier reminiscent of ocean reefs. Exploring the park, you’ll find charming historic homes from Mormon pioneers who settled here in the late 1800s. Don’t miss the orchards scattered throughout, and stop by the Gifford Homestead for freshly baked pies made from the park’s fruit. It’s a delightful blend of natural beauty and rich history!

Bryce Canyon National Park Located near the small town of Bryce, Bryce Canyon National Park is a veritable wonderland of unique rock formations known as hoodoos — towering red rock spires sculpted by centuries of erosion. The park’s scenic drive is a pleasant introduction, but the real magic lies in the overlooks, like Bryce Point, Sunset Point, and Inspiration Point, where you can feast your eyes on thousands of hoodoos. While photos struggle to capture their grandeur, hiking down among these spires offers an unparalleled, up-close experience. Zion National Park Located near the charming town of Springdale, Zion National Park is Utah’s most popular and magnificent destination, attracting over five million visitors annually. Known as a hiker’s paradise, Zion boasts an array of trails for all levels of expertise. For an easy yet rewarding hike, try the Zion Canyon Overlook Trail — a one-mile round trip with breathtaking views. Scout’s Lookout is also a must-do, but it’s not for the faint of heart! Climbing concrete switchbacks, you’ll wind your way through Refrigerator Canyon’s cool, narrow walls and test your balance on the short but steep switchbacks of Walter’s Wiggles, leading to a stunning view at the top. One of the best ways to experience the grandeur of this park is to bike the scenic road, which is closed to vehicles. Tudor Black Bay

T

Tudor introduces the newest iteration of the Black Bay in monochrome. Representing the latest in Black Bay, this model features evolved design elements, a “T-fit” clasp, and is Master Chronometer certified by METAS. The Black Bay, first launched in 2012 remains one of Tudor’s most recognized and beloved models. In its latest iteration, the case keeps the original proportions of a 41 mm case with a thinner profile. The unidirectional rotatable bezel features a black aluminum insert with a 60-minute scale to track immersion times, and the satin black dial is softly radial-brushed for a subtle shine under direct light. The Black Bay line features dials inspired by the Tudor divers’ watches produced during the 1950s. It borrows the characteristic angular hands known to

collectors as “snowflake” from models that appeared in the brand’s 1969 catalog. Its shoulder-less crown and the characteristics of its case are reminiscent of the first generations of Tudor divers’ watches. The new monochrome Black Bay ref. M7941A1A0NU comes fitted with either an entirely satin-brushed three-link stainless steel bracelet, a five-oval-shaped- link brushed and polished stainless steel bracelet, or a cut-to-size black rubber strap. All variations are equipped with the Tudor “T-fit” clasp with a system for rapid length adjustment. Easy to use, requiring no tools, and offering five positions, this practical system allows wearers to carry out a fine, instant adjustment of the total length of the bracelet along an adjustment window of 8 mm.

The METAS Master Chronometer-certified Manufacture Caliber MT5602-U automatic movement displays hour, minute, and seconds functions. The METAS Master Chronometer certification is comprehensive and covers the main functional characteristics of a watch. As such, the new Black Bay functions within a 5-second range of variation each day (0/+5), boasts resistance to 15,000 gauss of magnetic fields, is water-resistant to 660 feet, and includes a power reserve of 70 hours.

THE BLACK BAY IS THE RESULT OF THE SUBTLE BLEND OF TRADITIONAL AESTHETICS AND CONTEMPORARY WATCHMAKING. FAR FROM SIMPLY BEING AN IDENTICAL RE-RELEASE OF A CLASSIC, IT BRINGS TOGETHER 70 YEARS OF TUDOR DIVE WATCHES, WHILE ALSO BEING RESOLUTELY ANCHORED IN THE PRESENT.

SANTOS-DUMONT

Cartier

CARTIER EXPANDS ITS ICONIC SANTOS WATCH COLLECTION WITH NEW MODELS, WHICH ALL CARRY ON THE LEGACY OF THE ORIGINAL WATCH MADE FOR PIONEERING AVIATOR ALBERTO SANTOS-DUMONT IN 1904.

T

The first of the trio is the Santos- Dumont watch with a full yellow gold case, a blue sunray satin- brushed dial, and a blue alligator skin strap. Contrasting with the blue dial are the golden Roman numerals and golden-finish steel sword-shaped hands, while the beaded crown is set with a synthetic blue cabochon-shaped spinel. The 18k gold square case measures 43.5 mm by 31.4 mm, is water resistant to 30 meters, and houses a quartz movement. The remaining pair are stainless steel Santos de Cartier models, which retain the signature style of the original aviator watch. The Santos de Cartier medium model features a 35.1 mm case, furnished with a graduated blue dial. Conversely, the Santos de Cartier large model includes a 39.8 mm steel case, fitted with a graduated green dial.

SANTOS DE CARTIER

Both benefit from Cartier’s QuickSwitch interchangeable system, which means the integrated stainless steel bracelet can be easily swapped out with the leather strap that accompanies each watch (a blue strap for the blue dial medium model and a green strap for the green dial large model). What’s more, both watches run on the in- house Caliber 1847 automatic movement and include seven- sided crowns each set with a synthetic faceted blue spinel. versions

RARE SPORT TOURER

911 S/T

By Gary Wollenhaupt

No Lightweight

T

The 60th-anniversary edition of the Porsche 911 S/T is a commemorative lightweight edition built to extract as much driving enjoyment from the 911 platform as possible. It’s a collector’s item from day one, with a limited run of 1,963 units. The directive to the engineers at Porsche was simple: create a purpose-built machine for a pure, undiluted driving experience.

The starting point was the original 911 S version from 1969, tweaked for competitive racing. The new 911 S/T embodies the spirit of the original 911 S for the current generation of the venerable Porsche 911. It’s the lightest model of its generation, at 3,056 lbs., or 70 lbs. lighter than its sibling, the manual GT3 Touring. Many components, including the hood, roof, doors, and front

fenders, are crafted from carbon fiber- reinforced plastic. Insulation and rear-axle steering were left off the assembly list to save a few pounds. The magnesium wheels and ceramic composite brakes omit additional unnecessary weight. These engineering decisions contribute to agile and direct handling.

THE BASE MSRP STARTS AT $293,350, AND THE HERITAGE DESIGN PACKAGE ADDS ANOTHER $20,670. MULTIPLE OPTIONS AND COLORS, INCLUDING PAINT-TO- MATCH, ADD TO THE STICKER PRICE.

Engaging the accelerator puts the pieces in motion, with the exclusive lightweight single-mass flywheel encouraging the naturally aspirated 518 hp, 4.0 L boxer engine to build revs with refreshing directness.

With the short gear ratio on the six-speed manual transmission, the 911 S/T peaks at 9,000 rpm on its way to a top speed of 186 mph, passing 60 mph in 3.5 seconds.

With the lightweight flywheel, a firm hand on the gearshift is required to finesse each gear change. The autoblip function does take some of the stress out of coordinating downshifts.

With less insulation and lightweight glass, it’s noisier inside than an average 911, but that’s not all bad. Rather than overwhelming wind or tire noise, you can hear the interactions of the parts orchestrating a symphony of mechanical delights. With only 1,963 examples available worldwide, consider yourself fortunate to see one, let alone own one. The consolation prize is the standard 911 GT3 Touring, which would be the gold medal if you didn’t know the S/T existed.
