Korman Magazine 2024_2025

DEAR FRIENDS, We hope that 2024 has been a memorable and fun year for you and your family. It’s hard to believe it’s almost over! As we round out the holiday season and look to a new year, we are filled with gratitude for each of you and your support. Celebrating each occasion, each milestone and hearing your stories makes every day so special and rewarding for us. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your trust and loyalty to Korman. We promise to continue to push ourselves to excellence in all things jewelry and timepiece-related. Whether it’s continuing to bring the most exquisite gems and talented designers to Austin, providing the best level of service and attention to detail, or taking time and care in each repair or watch sizing that we complete for you. This year, we had the distinct pleasure of being presenters at the Gem Awards held at the Encore Theater during the annual Couture Show in Las Vegas. As we listened to talented designers who had traveled to speak on their vision and their passion for God’s precious gems that He spent millions of years forming, it struck me that not one step of their process had been easy. Their journey is REAL. As creatives, they’ve had to partner with business-minded people to help them to get their name and vision out there so that they can continue to create. We were honored to

recognize and congratulate them. When we add a collection to our jewelry house, it is much more than a name. It’s a lifelong dream for one person in some corner of the world. This year, we hosted some of the most talented designers here in Austin. Founders of Viltier, Thomas Montier Leboucher and Iris de La Villardière, Lisa Phillips Frankel of Phillips House and Jade Lustig, founder of Jade Trau. We look forward to sharing new designers Kwiat, Dinh Van, Tacori and Serafino Consoli, along with timeless classics from Fred Leighton. We also had the honor of launching Rolex Certified Pre-Owned this year, as well as Breitling and Grand Seiko. So thank you for believing in our discerning eye and supporting these artisans and Korman. We could not do it without you. We wish you and your family the most amazing 2025. We look forward to having you in our new store soon enough. We are also thankful that construction is not our full time gig as we know way more about CMU, steel trusses and the City of Austin permitting process than we ever cared to know about. But at long last, Korman will find its new home at the corner of 29th and Lamar, where new memories and moments can be shared as we continue to Celebrate Every Day. We are extremely appreciative for your support and cannot wait to share our vision ahead!

KWIAT CREATES A NEW WAY TO BUY A DIAMOND

Set to revolutionize the way we buy diamonds, Kwiat’s Mine to Shine program is the first retail offering that allows a customer to follow a singular rough diamond, ethically mined from a known origin, through the process of cutting and setting to create a one-of-a-kind ring. Kwiat has been a diamond jeweler since 1907, and over the past century, it has established a network of relationships across the supply chain that gives it a rare advantage. It can choose rough diamonds, each tracked to its country of origin, that will yield finished diamonds with specific qualities. Each is perfectly cut and consistent every time, designed to optimize brilliance, fire, and scintillation. Kwiat records a diamond’s provenance and then follows each stone through cutting, polishing, and then crafting the setting and mounting the diamond, eliminating middlemen along the process. By ethically sourcing diamonds from

known origins, Kwiat is supporting the economies of mining regions, which benefits schools, hospitals, and other community resources. With each purchase, Kwiat makes a donation to charity:water, the nonprofit organization that provides a family with clean drinking water. “Natural diamonds sourced from reputable locales, such as Botswana, Canada, Namibia, and South Africa, have a tremendous positive impact on local communities and citizens,” says Greg Kwiat, the company’s CEO. “We expect that in the years to come, other brands will follow our lead and adopt a more transparent and engaging approach.”

DIAMOND DETAILS

Lab Diamonds Natural Diamonds vs HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

A geologist once told me, “everything not grown on Earth is mined.” The raw materials for nearly everything we use are excavated from the Earth. Whether it is your cell phone, computer, the sheetrock in your house, or the pipes in your walls, these items and countless others are made from materials extracted from the ground. Historically, diamonds are the rarest and most beautiful material that comes from the ground. What makes a diamond so special? For starters, they are the hardest material on Earth and the product of precise scientific processes. Treasured for thousands of years, diamonds are symbols of love and dedication at the forefront of life’s most special moments. Their quality is meticulously graded based on cut, color, clarity, and carat weight—attributes that ensure the “WOW” factor that has mesmerized humans for centuries. We know that a diamond is a diamond, whether lab-grown or natural, so, what’s the difference? Let’s dive into the origins, characteristics, and price points of the world’s most beautiful marvels, and uncover what sets them apart.

the Earth’s mantle, crystallizes to form diamonds that are brought to the surface through volcanic eruptions. This is a gradual process, with the youngest natural diamonds being at least nine hundred million years old. So it goes without saying that these precious gems are a rare feat of nature. In order to create lab diamonds, you must replicate this natural process. There are two methods used to do this, the High Pressure High Temperature method (HPHT) and the Chemical Vapor Deposition method (CVD). HPHT replicates the conditions of the Earth’s mantle by creating a high-pressure, high-temperature environment. By placing a small diamond in carbon and exposing it to temperatures over 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit and 1.5 million PSI, the diamond “grows”, creating rough that is then cooled, cut and polished to create a beautiful stone. Through this method, a process that takes hundreds of millions of years in the earth takes only a few days. CVD is a more modern method that differs from HPHT by replicating how diamonds are made in nebulae in outer space. A small micro-diamond is placed in a vacuum chamber filled with carbon gas and heated to 1500 degrees Fahrenheit, causing the gas to become plasma and releasing carbon pieces that surround the seed diamond, forming lab rough. This method takes a few weeks to several months, but allows the most control

over color and clarity. To put it simply, lab and natural diamonds can be compared to a piece of art. Just like an original Van Gogh painting and a replicated print are both technically art, their difference lies in the artist and the process of their creation. Natural vs Lab-Grown Diamond Price Today, lab-grown diamonds cost 80%-95% less than a natural mined diamond and continue to decrease in value. This price discrepancy has everything to do with the stone’s origin. With a natural diamond, you’re paying for rarity. Desirable characteristics such as size, F color and VVS1 clarity cost more because they are natural phenomena. To help paint the picture of just how rare these characteristics are in natural diamonds, let’s break down what causes a diamond’s color. Color in diamonds is caused by the presence of nitrogen or boron, appearing as a slight tint in the stone. Since natural diamonds are created without human intervention (prior to cutting), the chances of a diamond having undetectable amounts of these elements is extremely rare. In fact, it’s estimated that only 1-2% of natural diamonds are considered colorless. With lab-grown diamonds, desirable characteristics don’t impact the price as significantly, because manufacturers can control the characteristics of the stone. Since the creation of the first lab-grown diamond in 1954, this process has been perfected, allowing production to be very cost-effective, but certainly not more sustainable, compared to mining. A study in 2017 estimated that the carbon emissions of a one carat natural diamond from mine to finger has a similar carbon impact as manufacturing three iPhones.

How to Tell the Difference Between Natural and Lab-Grown Diamonds Lab-grown and natural diamonds are chemically and visually identical, differing only in origin. They are both made of carbon atoms, both score 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, and both can display the same fire and scintillation. Distinguishing between lab-grown and natural diamonds requires sophisticated equipment, so be sure to visit your trusted jeweler for expert analysis and guidance. Whether natural or lab-grown, the sentiment remains the same. A diamond is a promise. A symbol of love and dedication. What matters is finding the stone that perfectly fits your unique love story, and is something your partner will be proud to wear. Ultimately, selecting a diamond comes down to the unique characteristics you value most. You may value the rarity and awe of a natural diamond and fall in love with a stunning antique- cut K-colored natural diamond, or perhaps an F-color lab-grown diamond catches your eye. Every diamond is unique, and our AJP and GIA certified diamond specialists are here to guide you on your journey to finding the perfect ring for your story. Introducing Dinh Van

A pioneering French jewelry brand founded by Jean Dinh Van in 1965, Dinh Van redefined the status quo. After spending a decade as a Cartier goldsmith, where he was one of the few allowed to stamp his own name into pieces, Dinh Van set out to create jewelry that was minimalist and modern, breaking away from traditional designs. Before then, jewelry was always elaborate, and only worn on special occasions. Dinh Van went against this norm, creating jewelry that was ready to wear. The brand is best known for its iconic Menottes collection, inspired by a keychain Jean Dinh Van once shared with his girlfriend, symbolizing unity and connection. The iconic chain links in many of the collections draw inspiration from the fences surrounding Parisian landmarks, such as the Palais Garnier. Dinh Van’s contribution

to jewelry design has earned the brand a rare distinction: it is one of the few jewelry designers to have pieces displayed in the Louvre museum in Paris. Known for its geometric shapes, clean lines, and everyday wearability, Dinh Van’s jewelry continues to redefine luxury by merging simplicity with elegance, making it a favorite for those who appreciate understated sophistication.

TAKE TO THE SKIES

Launched in 1952, the Navitimer was the first wristwatch for pilots to combine a chronograph and a computational slide rule. It quickly emerged as one of Breitling’s flagship watch models, becoming a beloved icon in both aviation and pop culture. Breitling began redesigning the Navitimer line in 2022, starting with the original chronograph. It continues that update with two new pared-down executions: a GMT and a three-hand Automatic, each in a universally wearable 41 mm size. These pieces distill the Navitimer’s iconic look, omitting the chronograph yet preserving the balanced dial. The central placement of the 24-hour scale on the GMT and the Automatic’s clean dial ensure the intricate slide rule stands out while streamlining the overall aesthetics. The palette includes black, blue, silver, ice blue, and green dials, encased in stainless steel or 18-karat red gold, along with a two-tone variant for the Automatic. This reinvention of the Navitimer, marrying the classic with the contemporary, is tailored for enthusiasts and the style- conscious alike, promising Breitling’s commitment to heritage and innovation in each timepiece.

Collecting Watch 9 TIPS FOR THE NOVICE WATCH COLLECTOR 101

The watch collecting bug usually starts with the basics — a time-only mechanical watch at the entry level, perhaps received as a graduation gift or purchased to celebrate an important achievement. Then it progresses to ever more sophisticated pieces, including rare editions and simple complications, like annual calendars or chronographs. In no time at all, you are eyeing the rare masterpieces in the exotic realm of high complications. One of the best ways to start a watch collection or to choose your first meaningful timepiece is to buy a pre-owned watch. Every great collection consists of a combination of pre- owned and new timepieces. Is watch collecting an investment? Sure, it can be. If you were lucky enough to have acquired one of some 3,000 Rolex Daytonas made in the 1960s, you should go straight to an auction house now and cash in. Ditto if your family has a Patek Philippe Ref. 1518 in the safety deposit box. But watch collecting, at any level, is also a passion. The pleasure of wearing a timepiece that you love, or one that exudes style that’s akin to driving a great car — except that you can’t drive a car into a boardroom. Either way, here are a few tips for getting it right when collecting watches and a few caveats for making sure you’re not getting it wrong. 1. Visit the pre-owned watch department of a reputable retailer. These are the watch experts who have established relationships with the brands and/or with licensed watch repair centers and watchmakers on staff. They usually buy pre-owned watches from customers who are trading up by selling off other perfectly good timepieces from their collections. Buying from the pre-owned watch department of an established, brick-and mortar retailer is all about the importance of knowing your seller and being able to see a watch before you buy. If you do decide to buy online, take

a look at the “buyer beware” sections of web sites that sell pre-owned watches; collectors tend to warn each other about bad dealers. 2. Read the auction catalogs.

Major auction houses such as Phillips, Christie’s, and Sotheby’s have sold famous watches for record prices (like the $17.7-million Paul Newman Rolex Daytona, sold by Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo). Auction catalogs are also a good way to track prices and values on the secondary market.

3. Go for a transitional piece. When a brand refreshes an iconic collection by tweaking the movement or upping the case size, for example, watches made in the last year before the new version comes out are considered “transitional.” Since they are, effectively, the last of their kind, it’s a good bet they will eventually become collector’s pieces. Do some research on transitional pieces from the top brands, and check the showcases of a store’s pre- owned watch department. You never know what treasures await you. 4. Maintain, but with caution. If you’re buying a vintage watch, make sure it’s in good shape — and if it’s not, find out whether it can be repaired or restored. And if you own a good watch, make sure it gets serviced every few years. 5. Forge a relationship with an authorized dealer. When your favorite brand releases an extremely limited edition piece and you want one, an authorized dealer can be your best friend. He can be an ongoing source of insider information about watches. 6. In-house movements matter. In-house movements are made by the brand name on the dial and are often developed specifically for the watches in which they

are cased. Some of these movements are entirely unique, with patented components and enhanced performance features, such as magnetic resistance. Some of the more complex movements are made in very limited numbers. Either way, an in-house movement generally translates into more value for your watch. 7. Safety first. Get insurance, or an in- home safe, for your watch collection. You will sleep better. 8. Don’t buy as an investment. You should have resale value in mind when you buy and maintain a timepiece, but value is hard to predict, and it shouldn’t be your only consideration. Some watches will retain or increase in value; many will not. Buy for passion and pleasure. If you love wearing and owning a watch, that is a reward in itself. 9. Quality, not quantity. Buy the best quality you can afford; otherwise it will be difficult to trade up for any real value. Remember that a collection of four exceptional watches is better than a collection of 10 mediocre ones. Buy what you love, not what you think others will love.

I wasn’t a huge watch guy growing up, this is my first really cool watch and I wear it with pride because it was the first watch ever worn on the moon. On Saturday I got a lot of compliments on it… this watch means a lot to me because of the history behind it.” Larry: Considering how you defy gravity on the field with some of your plays, it’s definitely fitting for you to be rocking that piece. When I make a play I’ll get the praise, but if you watch, you’ll see the defensive line helping me make that play. We also always try to find a cool little dance every week to show out a little. Then they said if you could do absolutely anything , no limitations, what would you do? I then told them I wanted to go to the NFL, but that’s a long shot.
