DRINK + BE MERRY

5 TYPES OF THIS ANCIENT SPIRIT AND OUR TOP RECOMMENDATIONS Tequila

BLANCO The starting point for all tequila varieties, blanco is unaged, although sometimes it may rest in an oak barrel for up to 60 days. You’ll find blancos with a surprising variety of flavor profiles, from sharp notes of citrus and pepper to creamy smooth with touches of vanilla and honey. Tequila shots at the club are usually blanco. Blanco is diluted to 40 percent (80 proof) and bottled right after distilling.

REPOSADO Aged in oak barrels from two months to a year, a reposado tequila highlights blue agave with notes of vanilla, honey, and toasted nuts. It’s perfect for sipping rather than shots like the blanco. Reposados are the usual choice for a margarita or Paloma cocktail or a substitute for bourbon in an old-fashioned or Manhattan.

AÑEJO Añejo is the tequila version of the brown spirits, aging in oak whiskey barrels for one to three years. Flavors range from oaky and spicy to buttery and warm, depending on the aging, the char in the barrel, and any additives in the distiller’s recipe.

EXTRA AÑEJO Extra añejo rests for three years or more in oak barrels, imparting a rich amber color and intense aromas. The aging results in an ultra-premium spirit with deep notes of caramel, chocolate, cinnamon, and vanilla, resembling aged whiskey and cognac.

CRISTALINO This is an añejo or extra añejo that has been filtered through charcoal. This process removes tannins and enhances fruity and floral notes, resulting in a clear blanco style. Cristalinos are often sweeter and lighter than the unrefined añejo versions. Use it as any other tequila, adding to a cocktail, sipping on ice, or neat.

$88 El Tesoro Añejo

$150 JFC Extra Añejo

$75 Mijenta Reposado Tequila

$124 Avión Reserva Cristalino

$124 Fuenteseco Cosecha Tequila Blanco

Tequila is unique compared to whiskeys and other distilled spirits because it’s made from a raw ingredient not harvested annually. Weber Azul agaves, the ground-hugging succulents that are the source of tequila, take seven to ten years to mature to ripeness. Distilled spirits such as whiskey or vodka are made from corn, rye, wheat, or barley harvested yearly. Before you sip a tequila, think about the voyage to your glass. When an extra añejo tequila is poured, it is at least ten years old. The journey started several years ago in a field in the region of Jalisco, Mexico, and included at least three years aging in a barrel. The destination is your glass, so take the time to honor the lifetime of the tequila that creates a special moment in your life.

A VOYAGE INTO THE WORLD OF ROLEX Hans Wilsdorf was firmly convinced of a person’s ability to innovate and strive for excellence. More than 100 years after the creation of the brand, the founder’s philosophy is more present than ever, from the manufacturing of the company’s watches to its commitments worldwide.

HANS WILSDORF, 1945 Rolex founder and visionary entrepreneur.

a voyage into the world of rolex

“ T he opposition I encountered seemed insuperable.” At the turn of the 20th century, a visionary entrepreneur based in London was on the verge of success. His aim? To introduce the watchmaking world of the day to an as-yet-unknown dial signature: Rolex. A new name, invented in 1908, it would become one of the world’s most respected brands in the space of a few decades. As Hans Wilsdorf recounted in his memoirs of the early days of his company, the opposition he faced seemed insurmountable at first. The entrepreneur started out with very little, but he did possess invaluable qualities: vision, hope for the future, perseverance and an extraordinary ability to work. An orphan at the age of 12, with nothing other than his determination to help him overcome challenges, Hans Wilsdorf went on to invent the world’s first waterproof self-winding wristwatch with a Perpetual rotor — a watch that has become a benchmark in terms of quality and prestige. “Too complicated, too fragile, ill-adapted” — the wristwatch was met with scepticism in Edwardian England, then the sporting country par excellence. Yet, relying on his intuition, firmly- held beliefs and determination to push boundaries, Hans Wilsdorf managed to achieve his bold objective of establishing the Rolex watch — the Oyster Perpetual — as the archetype of the waterproof timepiece: precise, robust and able to withstand all conditions. But Hans Wilsdorf was not simply a visionary who, through his watchmaking knowledge, spirit of enterprise and ability to think differently, endowed Rolex watches with their fundamental technical and aesthetic characteristics and set the way for his company’s long-lasting success. His constant quest for perfection was accompanied by a profound generosity and unshakeable faith in human potential — in our capacity to both innovate and overcome difficulties. Hans Wilsdorf was a compassionate man always prepared to challenge himself and who encouraged others to give their all. Draw from traditions to drive innovation. Push back the limits to inspire. These convictions enabled Rolex to create an exceptional product — a watch that brings together considerable expertise and has accompanied a great many human adventures in widely diverse fields. Uniting expertise An integrated and independent company, Rolex has manufacturing resources that encompass a wide range of skills and knowledge. Watchmakers, engineers, designers and other specialists work closely together from the design to the manufacturing of the watches. Rolex’s company culture is based above all on human values, which place both expertise and soft skills at the heart of the brand’s different activities. Rolex is host to a variety of professions, brought to life by employees who are experts in their fields. This diversity comes from the company’s complete control over its essential components, from the casting of gold alloys to machining, finishing and assembly of the movement, case, dial and bracelet elements, as well as gem-setting.

The brand is able to constantly reinforce its quality requirements, thanks to its exclusive equipment. Its know-how is also made available across the world, thanks to an exceptional after- sales service network. To ensure the brand’s expertise exists into the future, Rolex has its own unique Training Centre. Dedicated to the pursuit of excellence and the development of its employees, the center, located in Geneva, provides training to employees and instructs apprentices. The company aims to pass on to younger generations its pride in its skills and mastery of its knowledge. Hans Wilsdorf wanted to ensure both the commercial success of Rolex and the well-being of its employees. The Training Centre perpetuates this philosophy by passing on the company’s heritage through the training and development of each individual. It therefore affirms the brand’s position as a role model and source of inspiration for the present generation and for generations to come. A watch unlike the rest Nearly a century ago, Hans Wilsdorf created the most precise and reliable wristwatch in the world. Thanks to uncompromising requirements, today the brand still produces watches at the forefront of technology and continues to improve them over time. The Oyster Perpetual collection was built on the success of the original Oyster model, patented by Rolex and launched in 1926. As the world’s first waterproof wristwatch, it played a pioneering role in the development of the modern timepiece. Over the years, the Oyster became the proud bearer of many other innovations — such as self-winding by means of the Perpetual rotor (1931) — that defined the identity of the models in the collection and forged Rolex’s reputation for excellence, of which chronometric precision and reliability are among the cornerstones. After acquiring its definitive form in the early 1940s, the Oyster gradually evolved into a collection of watches that integrated new functions and innovative technologies. All of the collection’s models share fundamental features and a strong visual identity that makes them instantly recognizable. Today the collection consists of 12 ranges, split into two categories: Classic watches such as the Datejust, the Day-Date and the Sky-Dweller, and Professional watches, including the Explorer, the Submariner and the GMT-Master II, designed for specific activities. Rolex watches have proven their reliability in the most extreme conditions, from the deepest reaches of the ocean to the top of the highest mountains, in the air and on the racing circuit. To ensure the quality of its products, Rolex designs and produces in-house the essential components of its watches (casting of gold alloys, assembly of the movement, case, dial and bracelet, machining and finishing). As the pioneer of the wristwatch, the company is at the origin of numerous major innovations in the watchmaking industry and has filed over 500 patents in the course of its history.

Commitment to making the world a better place Throughout its history, Rolex has partnered with events, institutions and individuals whose commitment and actions are a source of inspiration. Guided by the vision of its founder, the brand was quick to support and accompany initiatives that aligned with its own values — the quest for excellence, pushing the boundaries and the passion for elegance. This is how Rolex created the Testimonee concept in 1927 with British swimmer Mercedes Gleitze, who demonstrated the waterproofness of the brand’s watches. Since then, Rolex has teamed up with a large number of exceptional partners, supporting the initiatives of major organizations as well as personal projects of its Testimonees. For Hans Wilsdorf, the world was also a living laboratory. In the 1930s, Rolex tested its watches in real-life conditions. Explorers subjected them to some of the most extreme conditions in the least hospitable corners of the globe. But, over time, these expeditions also highlighted the

fragility of the planet’s ecosystems and the need to preserve them. Rolex therefore gave its full support to the adventurers who went on to become pioneers in protecting the environment. Today, Rolex is linked to more than 100 major international events ranging from The Championships, Wimbledon, to La Biennale di Venezia and the Oscars ® ceremony, while also enjoying close ties with more than 80 renowned institutions, such as The R&A, the Teatro alla Scala in Milan and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The brand also has more than 140 Testimonees, including tennis legend Roger Federer, marine biologist Sylvia Earle and filmmaker Martin Scorsese. In addition, two programs were created: the Rolex Awards for Enterprise and the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative. The former supports individuals with innovative projects in response to major challenges, while the latter champions excellence in the arts and culture to ensure the world’s artistic heritage is passed on to the next generation. Since the beginning, the story of Rolex has been characterized by the quest for perfection and the ambition to push back the boundaries. To strive to do better, to never give up, to think differently. Thanks to its founder Hans Wilsdorf, who believed in human potential above all, the brand has continued to innovate and grow, thereby guaranteeing its long-lasting success.

In the early 20th century, pearl jewelry was synonymous with elegance and status. The Art Nouveau and Edwardian eras favored delicate, intricate designs that complemented the soft luster of pearls. Necklaces were often long and layered, accentuating the graceful necklines of the period’s gowns. Pearls were also prominently featured in tiaras, brooches, and earrings, adorned with filigree work and often combined with diamonds and other gemstones for added brilliance. The 1920s brought the Jazz Age and with it, a dramatic shift in fashion. Pearls became a symbol of modernity and liberation,

famously worn by flappers in short, multi- strand necklaces that danced and shimmered with movement. This era celebrated the sleek sophistication of pearls, moving away from the complex styles of previous decades.

In the mid-20th century, pearls regained their status as a staple of refined elegance, thanks in part to icons like Audrey Hepburn and Jackie Kennedy. The 1950s and 60s showed

us classic designs, with single strand necklaces and simple stud earrings becoming timeless accessories for formal and everyday wear alike — a style movement so strong for pearls that it’s still prevalent today.

For some couples, the best option is to upgrade to a new diamond ring due to a change in style preference or damage to the original ring. Consider enhancing the design

& done A SOLITARY LIFE

Solitaires, characterized by their single, prominent diamond, are perennial favorites for brides, symbolizing elegance, simplicity, and enduring love. Yet the diamond shape within these timeless settings makes all the difference. Brides gravitate towards shapes that mirror their personal style and aesthetic preferences, whether classic, romantic, modern, or bold. But what makes the solitaire so appealing? The answer lies in its design — its classic simplicity allows the diamond, no matter the shape, to take center stage, showcasing its brilliance and quality without distraction. Today’s brides are bold and adventurous but still desire elegance and luxury in their engagement rings. And when it comes to diamond shapes, they’re chasing that WOW factor. This is why we see them drawn to more bold and unique diamond shapes.

Round: The Classic Bride

Renowned for its brilliance, the round diamond maximizes light reflection and sparkles with unrivaled shimmer.

Pear: The Romantic Dreamer The pear’s teardrop shape offers a unique and romantic aesthetic, perfect for the dreamer.

Oval: The Modern Sophisticate

Carat for carat, oval diamonds create an elongated illusion, giving the appearance of a larger stone compared to rounds.

THE ENDURING POPULARITY OF THE SOLITAIRE ENGAGEMENT RING WITH A UNIQUE DIAMOND SHAPE

PROVES THAT SOMETIMES, LESS IS MORE.

Marquise: : The Bold Statement Maker

Marquise diamonds elongate the finger, giving the appearance of a bigger stone that makes a statement.

Radiant: : The Trendsetter

Radiants combine the sparkle of round cuts with the structured elegance of emerald cuts, living in a trendy category all its own.

While the classic round cut, known for its brilliant sparkle, is always a crowd favorite, today’s couples also gravitate toward the elegant pear, which offers a unique teardrop silhouette. The radiant cut is another intriguing choice, combining brilliant facets with a sleek rectangular shape, while the oval is favored for its elongated elegance. Lastly, the marquise, with its distinctive pointed ends and maximized carat weight, remains a bold and eye-catching choice.

Solitaire engagement rings symbolize a pure, unadorned commitment. The single diamond represents the singular focus and dedication of the relationship, making it a deeply meaningful choice for couples who value the symbolic aspects of their ring.

RARE SPORT TOURER

911 S/T

By Gary Wollenhaupt

No Lightweight

T The 60th-anniversary edition of the Porsche 911 S/T is a commemorative lightweight edition built to extract as much driving enjoyment from the 911 platform as possible. It’s a collector’s item from day one, with a limited run of 1,963 units. The directive to the engineers at Porsche was simple: create a purpose-built machine for a pure, undiluted driving experience.

The starting point was the original 911 S version from 1969, tweaked for competitive racing. The new 911 S/T embodies the spirit of the original 911 S for the current generation of the venerable Porsche 911. It’s the lightest model of its generation, at 3,056 lbs., or 70 lbs. lighter than its sibling, the manual GT3 Touring. Many components, including the hood, roof, doors, and front

fenders, are crafted from carbon fiber- reinforced plastic. Insulation and rear-axle steering were left off the assembly list to save a few pounds. The magnesium wheels and ceramic composite brakes omit additional unnecessary weight. These engineering decisions contribute to agile and direct handling.

THE BASE MSRP STARTS AT $293,350, AND THE HERITAGE DESIGN PACKAGE ADDS ANOTHER $20,670. MULTIPLE OPTIONS AND COLORS, INCLUDING PAINT-TO- MATCH, ADD TO THE STICKER PRICE.

Engaging the accelerator puts the pieces in motion, with the exclusive lightweight single-mass flywheel encouraging the naturally aspirated 518 hp, 4.0 L boxer engine to build revs with refreshing directness.

With the short gear ratio on the six-speed manual transmission, the 911 S/T peaks at 9,000 rpm on its way to a top speed of 186 mph, passing 60 mph in 3.5 seconds.

With the lightweight flywheel, a firm hand on the gearshift is required to finesse each gear change. The autoblip function does take some of the stress out of coordinating downshifts.

With less insulation and lightweight glass, it’s noisier inside than an average 911, but that’s not all bad. Rather than overwhelming wind or tire noise, you can hear the interactions of the parts orchestrating a symphony of mechanical delights. With only 1,963 examples available worldwide, consider yourself fortunate to see one, let alone own one. The consolation prize is the standard 911 GT3 Touring, which would be the gold medal if you didn’t know the S/T existed.

Breitling Navitimer new Watches Launched in 1952, the Navitimer was the first wristwatch for pilots to combine a chronograph and a computational slide rule. It quickly emerged as one of Breitling’s flagship watch models, becoming a beloved icon in both aviation and pop culture.

TAKE TO THE SKIES

44 LENOX JEWELERS MAGAZINE

Breitling began redesigning the Navitimer line in 2022, starting with the original chronograph. It continues that update with two new pared-down executions: a GMT and a three-hand Au- tomatic, each in a univer- sally wearable 41 mm size.

These pieces distill the Navitimer’s iconic look, omitting the chronograph yet preserving the balanced dial. The central placement of the 24-hour scale on the GMT and the Automatic’s clean dial ensure the intricate slide rule stands out while streamlining the overall aesthetics. The palette includes black, blue, silver, ice blue, and green dials, encased in stainless steel or 18-karat red gold, along with a two-tone variant for the Automatic. This reinvention of the Navitimer, marrying the classic with the contemporary, is tailored for enthusiasts and the style-conscious alike, promising Breitling’s commitment to heritage and innovation in each timepiece.

ORIS Aquis Date GREAT BARRIER REEF LIMITED EDITION IV

O

Oris returns to the water with a 2,000-piece limited edition created to support the Australian non-profit Reef Restoration Foundation. Oris partnered with Reef Restoration Foundation in 2018 based on its mission to bring Change for the Better. “Oris is climate neutral and committed to the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals,” says Co-CEO Rolf Studer. “Supporting the Reef Restoration Foundation is a joy, and we’re delighted to shine a light on their work to counter the effects of climate change on the world’s reefs.” The Great Barrier Reef Limited Edition IV watch is based on the next-

generation Aquis Date Caliber 400 but with a few extra details designed to capture the foundation’s story. These start with the vivid gradient blue dial, which not only mimics the turquoise and blue waters of the Great Barrier Reef from the air but also the refraction of the sun’s rays through the water. This is one of the few times Oris has made a dial gradient that falls vertically from 12 o’clock rather than emanating from the center. The dial is home to center hours, minutes, and seconds hands, as well as a date window at 6 o’clock. The hands and indices are coated with Super- LumiNova for low-light legibility.

The base is the Aquis Date 43.50 mm, the refined versatile tool watch with 300 meters of water resistance. Its stainless steel case, screw-in crown, crown protection, unidirectional rotating bezel, and three-link bracelet have all been redesigned for improved ergonomics and performance.

Inside the case is the game-changing Caliber 400, the in-house automatic movement with 120 hours of power reserve that delivers elevated anti-magnetism, 10-year recommended service intervals, and a 10-year warranty with a MyOris registration.

As with all Aquis Date Caliber 400 models, the Great Barrier Reef Limited Edition IV also features the Oris-patented strap change and quick adjustment systems, both designed for ease of use and versatility.

THERE’S ALSO A GRAY TUNGSTEN

BEZEL INSERT AND A CASEBACK WITH SPECIAL ENGRAVINGS, INCLUDING THE LIMITED-EDITION NUMBER OUT OF THE 2,000 EXAMPLES THAT WILL BE PRODUCED.

continues to Shinola Birdy the fly

In 2013, the city of Detroit filed for bankruptcy. Shinola, the watch and lifestyle brand that proudly calls Detroit home, decided to fight back against all the headlines that dismissed the once-prosperous city with a provocative ad campaign in the New York Times with the headline: “To Those Who Have Dismissed Detroit, We Give You The Birdy.”

Birdy Jasper ref. S0120291078 Inside the gold PVD 34 mm case is a fine porcelain jasper dial with an earthy hue that ranges from rusty red to dust pink. Fitted with a gold PVD three-link bracelet.

Not only was it a catchy way to announce the Birdy watch, Shinola’s newest ladies’ timepiece collection, it also reminded the nation that there were people who still lived, worked, and flourished in Detroit regardless of what the critics said. Over a decade later, the Birdy watch remains a mainstay of Shinola’s catalog, maintaining its recognizable round case silhouette with coin- edge detailing, an oversized winding crown, wire lugs, a slim strap, and the Argonite 775 high-frequency quartz movement hand-assembled in Detroit. Stone dials became a hallmark of the Birdy collection, starting with the Petoskey stone to pay homage to the hidden gems found along northern Michigan beaches and evolving to include other natural materials. Against the odds, the Motor City is moving forward with its comeback story. And the Shinola Birdy collection continues to fly to new heights.

Birdy Aventurine ref. S0120283779 The gold PVD 34 mm case is home to a polished aventurine stone, which shines with a lucky green glow. Fitted with a gold PVD three- link bracelet.

Birdy Mother-of-Pearl ref. S0120077932 Complementing the two-tone stainless steel and gold PVD case and bracelet is the bold white mother-of-pearl dial. Fitted with a stainless steel and gold PVD three-link bracelet.

REST + RELAXATION

By Gary Wollenhaupt

You may be one of the 25 to 30 percent of American adults who suffer from insomnia. Men start out with a higher rate of sleep issues, but women catch up to them by around age 50. Noise, or lack thereof, contributes to trouble falling and staying asleep. It’s about more than masking sudden noises like a dog barking or a far-off siren. It’s about stimulating your Sublim e Sl eeee p

Best Noise for Sleep The good news is that it’s fairly easy to test which noise is best for you. Try falling asleep to the sound of a running fan in the bedroom. The next night, play the sounds of waves crashing against the shore to test brown noise to get a feel for which might work better for you. There are many phone apps that let you choose from a wide variety of opptions. Tips for Sleeping With Noises Use low volume. You could keep yourself awake if it’s too loud. Set a timer so sounds don’t play all night. Many apps have timers for this reason. Try it out. Experiment with different noise types (there are others, including pink and blue) to see which helps you more. sensory system with the right kind of noise for you. There’s a fine line between too much noise and too little as you fall asleep. It’s hard to block out loud noises, but too little noise and your brain latches on to every distraction. You need the right kind of aural stimulation to put you in productive sleep mode. The question becomes, white noise or brown noise? Studies have shown that listening to specific frequencies can improve sleep quality and reduce the time it takes to fall asleep. Playing gentle and relaxing sounds can help cover abrupt noises that would otherwise wake you.

White Noise is a combination of all audio frequencies that humans can hear, which blend into a high-pitched, staticky sound. You’ve heard it in sounds like TV or radio static, the whir of a fan or vacuum, or a noisy air conditioner. Brown Noise features low-frequency sounds and bypasses the high-frequency sounds. It’s deeper with more bass tone and less hiss than white noise. Brown noise includes sounds like rainfall or a shower with strong water pressure.

OFTEN, IT’S NOT THE NOISE ITSELF BUT RATHER THE SUDDEN CHANGE IN NOISE THAT’S LIKELY TO INTERRUPT YOUR SLUMBER. THAT’S WHERE WHITE AND BROWN NOISE CAN HELP.
